Buried alive. He wakes in darkness to find her on top of him. Preston Byron has been buried alive, but he’s not alone in the dark. Sloane Armstrong is with him. On top of him. Kissing him to hold their panic at bay, promising that they will survive the nightmare around them. That help is coming…And they do survive. They are rescued. They return to reality…
But she haunts him.
Preston isn’t going to let his attacker escape. He plans to hunt the killer who targeted him. A man who made Preston relive a nightmare from his past. But there was an angel in the dark with him, a woman who captivates Preston. Preston isn’t about to let Sloane slip from his life. She saved him, she charmed him, and she made the critical mistake of fascinating him. Now, he will do whatever it takes to unlock all of her secrets.
Killers are her specialty. The darker the monster, the more savage the crime…
Sloane studies killers. Or, actually, she is currently studying the adult children of serial killers. Her work brought her into billionaire real estate mogul Preston Byron’s life. Fine—she was semi-stalking him. Learning every detail about the gorgeous and sexy Preston that she could. Preston was kidnapped as a teen. Buried alive. Preston believed that he was just another victim of the Last Breath Killer—the only victim to survive—but Sloane has learned the shocking truth…Preston was the serial killer’s biological son. Preston doesn’t know about his serial killer parent. He certainly doesn’t know that his father was trying to push his son into following in his own sick, murderous footsteps.
Because the darkness calls…and it tempts…
Something unlocked inside of Preston in the darkness. A beast that he’d kept chained for a long time is pressing close to the surface, demanding that he find his abductor, that he eliminate the threat. The only one who can soothe the beast is the same woman who comforted him, who kissed him, in the dark. Sloane is the key to his control…and also the one person who may be able to shatter it into a million pieces. She’s keeping secrets from him, and when the truth comes out, it will upend Preston’s world.
Better take a deep breath. It just might be your last.
A predator is hunting—a copycat who is enacting the Last Breath Killer’s crimes, and his next target…is Sloane.
Author’s Preston wants her before he even sees her face. Desire sinks into his very bones, and she’s his lifeline, his link to sanity when the dark presses in. There is no rule that he will not break for her, no risk that he will not take, and when the danger starts to grow around Sloane, Preston will let his beast off its careful leash, and he will eliminate every threat to her. Because she saved him when he was in the dark. And he will never, ever allow anyone to take her from him.

This is literally my worst nightmare! I was immediately pulled in with an opening scene that shook me and what followed was a story that was darker than this author’s usual fare and I freaking loved it! It was unsettling, completely addictive and hit every note that keeps my “true crime junkie” heart happy. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
My heart hurt for both Sloane and Preston. They both carry scars from their pasts that have shaped who they are. I loved watching them deal with the ongoing danger while slowly learning they didn't have to face it alone. Everything about this story was intense. Every new twist, every move the villain made, and every step Sloane and Preston took toward each other had me glued to the pages. And oh my! My heart leapt for joy to see a made family emerge through all the chaos.
I highly recommend this one if you enjoy dark romantic suspense with plenty of danger, unexpected twists, and multilayered characters you'll be cheering for.

PS : to the publisher and Netgalley, thank you so much for the ARC =D

The second book in a romantic suspense series where there are far too many serial killers ...
After getting a few glimpses of Sloane in the previous book, I was really excited to read her story—and right from the opening lines, I was hooked ! The plot was delightfully twisted, featuring a potential serial killer whose M.O. echoes that of the hero’s father yet deviates from the usual pattern. Throw in a romance packed with drama and tension between two protagonists scarred by their pasts, and you’ve got a winner !
I liked this installment a tad less than the previous one, though I couldn't say exactly why ... It was missing a certain “je ne sais quoi” to make it an absolute favorite !
All in all, an original suspense romance with Criminal Minds vibes that I thoroughly enjoyed ! The little hints about a potential relationship between FBI agent Dom and our favorite hacker have me SO eager for the next book (I hope it’s about them !); the wait is going to kill me ><
PS: To the publisher and NetGalley, thank you so much for the ARC =D
4.25stars-TEMPTATION is the second instalment in Cynthia Eden’s contemporary, adult POISON IN MY VEINS romantic suspense series. This is billionaire real estate investor Preston Byron, and psychologist Sloane Armstrong’s story line. TEMPTATION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.
NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.
Told from several omniscient third person perspectives including Sloane and Preston TEMPTATION follows in the wake of the rescue of our story line couple. Sloane Armstrong is a psychologist who specialises in abnormal behavior, currently researching the adult offspring of serial killers. Her current target is billionaire Preston Byron but Sloane never expected to become a killer’s next victim, find herself buried alive with her latest subject. Preston Byron is the son of a serial killer, a killer who buried his victims alive, including a younger version of our story line hero but within hours of their rescue, more victims go missing, and Preston becomes the number one suspect in the eyes of the FBI. As Sloane and Preston follow the clues, a familiar pattern emerges, as our couple struggle to stay alive.
The world building focuses on the hunt for a killer-the patterns, the victims, a history connected to our story line hero, and a possible copy cat who refuses to let go.
The relationship between Sloane and Preston begins as an abduction and rescue. Sloane witnessed the attack on Preston Byron, an attack that would be also directed on our heroine. Upon their rescue, Preston would become guardian and protector but the killer continues to target more victims, and Preston struggles with the ghosts from his past. The $ex scenes are provocative and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The secondary and supporting characters are dangerous and determined. We are introduced to sheriff Debra Tooni, EMTs Adam East and Bridget Russell, officer Eugene Calvin, and the return of billionaire Atlas Bennett, and psychiatrist Dr. Lily Gallo (Compulsion).
TEMPTATION is a story of madness, murder and obsession, power and control, family and friendships, relationships and love. The character driven premise is dark, dramatic and haunting; the romance is seductive ; the characters are desperate, dynamic and a little bit broken.
Temptation by Cynthia Eden is an intensely gripping romantic suspense novel that masterfully blends psychological thriller elements, dark family secrets, relentless danger, and an emotionally charged romance into a fast-paced and unforgettable story. With compelling protagonists, escalating suspense, and a captivating mystery, this second installment in the Poison In My Veins series delivers an exhilarating reading experience from beginning to end.
One of the novel's greatest strengths is the fascinating relationship between Preston Byron and Sloane Armstrong. Their first encounter under unimaginable circumstances immediately creates emotional intensity, and the connection forged through trauma evolves into a relationship built on trust, vulnerability, and fierce devotion. Preston's protective instincts and Sloane's intelligence and resilience complement one another, creating chemistry that feels both passionate and emotionally authentic.
The psychological elements add tremendous depth to the narrative. Preston's struggle with the disturbing truth surrounding his past, combined with Sloane's expertise in studying serial killers, creates a layered story where personal identity, inherited darkness, and the fear of becoming what one dreads most are explored with remarkable tension. These emotional conflicts make both characters feel multidimensional and compelling.
Beyond the romance, the suspense is expertly crafted. The mystery surrounding the copycat killer, the hunt for the original mastermind's legacy, and the constant danger surrounding Sloane generate suspense that continually raises the stakes. Each revelation deepens the mystery while seamlessly intertwining with the developing romance, maintaining momentum throughout the novel.
The story also explores meaningful themes of survival, trust, redemption, trauma, healing, identity, and unconditional love. Both Preston and Sloane carry emotional burdens that shape their choices, and watching them confront painful truths while learning to rely on one another gives the novel significant emotional weight alongside its thrilling plot.
For readers who enjoy romantic suspense, psychological thrillers, serial killer mysteries, protective heroes, strong heroines, dark family secrets, and emotionally intense contemporary romance, Temptation is a compelling and highly satisfying novel that delivers equal measures of passion, suspense, and emotional depth.
If you follow my reviews then you know how much I loved the first book in this series, Compulsion. It is so good. I just love Atlas and Lily. They are so perfect together. You quickly meet Sloane in the prior book but don't really get to know her. Boy to you become acquainted with her in this book.
The story opens up with a bang and for me what would be terrorizing. I don't think I'd be able to survive it. This killer is horrible. Temptation is a fast-paced story that keeps you wondering till the end. It also has a few surprises in it that even shocked me. I love when an author can keep things hidden from me
I really liked both Sloane and Preston. They work together. I did get mad at him at times but understood why. Sloane did step out of bounds a bit but nothing that couldn't be forgiven. The more you learn about these two the more horrible you feel for them. They both had their lives torn apart by terrible people. Thankfully they had good people come into their lives that helped them become the persons they are.
This series is so good and dark. Just thinking about the crimes done makes you not want to leave the house. I so enjoyed it and can't wait to see what twisted stuff she comes up with next.
Sloane Armstrong has an unusual occupation…she researches the adult children of serial killers. She does so after her parents were killed by a man she had dated. She is careful as the individual may not be aware of their parents’ crimes. Her current subject, wealthy Preston Byron is so far unaware of her presence. That suddenly changes when she sees him being attacked and placed in a van. Her attempt to rescue him, lands her on top of him in a buried coffin. She knows that when he was a teen, he had been buried in a coffin, but fought and was able to force his way out. Before he can get them out, help arrives in the form of her best friend, Lily and her husband, Atlas. She was unaware that the bracelet she wears contained a tracking device. Preston decides that Sloane will stay with him as they search for the person who wants him dead. She believed that he was unaware of his father’s crimes, but is he? The town sheriff, Debra Toomi, believes that Sloane was involved in his abduction. When another person is kidnapped, possibly buried alive, will they be in time? Preston knows that whoever is responsible will come after him again and calls in extra security…not for him, but to protect Sloane. He must keep her safe, as she has become the most important person in his life. When the threat comes after her again, she realizes who is involved and knows that Preston will be looking for her. She will need to be strong, to do what she needs to do to stay alive…until he arrives. An absolute thrilling romantic suspense, strong characters and a love that won’t be denied! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
With frighteningly similar pasts, Preston and Sloane’s chaotic journey is woven through this intense, heart-stopping suspense that will keep you guessing to the very end, and maybe sleeping with the lights on.
Buried alive, Preston Byron can’t believe he is reliving a nightmare from his past. But, this time he isn’t alone in the darkness. A woman is buried with him, on top of him, and her kisses are helping to keep the terror at bay, all while insisting they will be rescued soon. And they are. Now, for the first time in his life, Preston is drawn to a woman that is able to sooth the beast inside and light the darkness within.
Killers are Sloane Armstrong’s specialty. She is currently studying adult children of serial killers. Her research has brought her to the home of billionaire real estate mogul Preston Byron. Kidnapped as a teen and buried alive, Preston was the only survivor of the Last Breath Killer. As Sloane is prepared to share shocking information with Preston she will, instead, find herself buried alive with the man, and unnerved by the unsettling reaction she has to Preston’s touch.
While Sloane and Preston both have secrets from their pasts they will find they are far more alike than they could ever expect.
I've been waiting for this book for quite a while, and I was so excited to finally read it. This is the second book in the Poison in My Veins series and follows Sloane Armstrong, Lily's best friend from the first book. Sloane is a psychologist studying the adult children of serial killers, and her research ends up bringing her into the orbit of billionaire real estate mogul Preston Byron.
The suspense kept me turning the pages, and the romance was definitely satisfying. That said, I guessed who the culprit was almost immediately. Since he appeared pretty early in the story, I had my suspicions right away, and unfortunately, I turned out to be correct. Maybe I've just read too many romantic suspense whodunits, but it felt a little too obvious for me.
Still, even though I figured out the "who," I definitely didn't figure out the "why." The book had some twists regarding the motive, the culprit's true identity, and their connection to the main characters that genuinely surprised me.
Overall, this was still a really enjoyable read. The suspense, romance, and unexpected revelations kept me invested from beginning to end.
I voluntarily reviewed "TEMPTATION" given freely by the author who did a great job writing this intriguing, intense suspense filled drama with danger, past trauma, action, danger, secrets pulling you in from the start. Sloane Armstrong studies children of serial killers bringing her to Preston Byron a Billionaire Real Estate Mogul who's past nightmares still haunts him, finding out shocking truth she ends up buried alive with Preston. Preston thinks he's just another victim of Breath Serial Killer not knowing he's the biological son of the serial killer, he was trying to get Preston to follow in his own monstrous footsteps. Preston won't rest till the killer is brought to justice shocked by Sloane being able to sooth the rising to the surface when be was with her, she's the key to his keeping his life from shattering. Will Preston & Sloane end up together after she tells him the truth about his father or will that be his end, its a must read you can't miss this twisted page turner.
He was fourteen when he escaped a serial killer the first time. Preston wakes up to darkness and something or someone laying on top of him. He knows where he is because he has been here before. Preston was left at the fire department when he was a baby. He was adopted and had a good family. Sloane Armstrong studies serial killers children. She has been watching Preston and when he is drugged and put in a van, Sloane starts attacking the attacker and gets knocked out and taken too. When Preston awakes to Sloane kissing him, she is trying to keep him from panicking and keeps reassuring Preston they will be saved. Once they are rescued, by friends of Sloane’s, Preston plans to hunt down their kidnapper and make sure they never do it again. He decides to keep Sloane close and she explains what she does and why. When Sloane is taken again, Preston will stop at nothing to get her back. She is the light to his darkness.
This was an awesome story. It’s one that left me breathless. Secrets. Serial killer. Forced proximity. Preston is rich, gorgeous and thinks he is darkness. Sloane is beautiful, intelligent, and full of light. I voluntarily read and reviewed this for the author.
Cynthia Eden delivers another rollercoaster of a read.
Preston wakes up buried alive. But this isn’t his first time being buried alive. This time is different, as he’s buried alive with an angel. Sloane tried to stop his kidnapping and got thrown in the coffin with him. She’s calm and cool and funny and sexy in the dark. Preston is many things. The biological son of a serial killer (he doesn’t know that part, but Sloane does, as she’s stalking him, it’s kind of her job). He’s a billionaire. He’s got dark thoughts lurking. But maybe he needs an angel to direct his dark urges into hunting the copy cat killer who buried them alive.
Non stop action, witty dialog, all the feels with an antihero who sure feels like a hero. Highly recommend.
Temptation is the 2nd book in the Poison In My Veins series. It's not strictly necessary to read them in order, but I highly recommend doing so. Like Compulsion, Sloane and Preston's story is a blood-curdling, dark suspense with elements of a psychological thriller combined with a romance that's almost sweet despite the fierce attraction between them. Add the touch of humor in the internal dialogues to the mix and you' ve got a compelling page-turner that gripped me with the first word and didn't let me up for air until the very last. My recommendation: Clear your calendar, set drinks and snacks where you can reach them, then take a deep breath before you dive in and enjoy! I was fortunate to have received an early copy and am leaving this review voluntarily and honestly.
What an amazing story. This book really starts off with a bang from the very first page. Imagine waking up and realizing that you were buried alive in a coffin underground. That’s exactly what happens to Sloane and Preston in the 2nd book in the Poison In my Veins series. This book grabs your attention from the very first page and keeps you on your toes throughout the entire story! I literally could not put this book down it was so good. Preston and Sloane certainly had a lot of obstacles in their way while trying to figure out who was behind the murders. It was great watching these two learn to trust each other and grow into a strong relationship. The ending was fabulous and will leave you breathless.
I absolutely loved this book. The hero had just the right amount of darkness and protectiveness without ever becoming overbearing, and the heroine was refreshingly capable instead of constantly needing to be rescued. Loved the buildup to revealing the killer too, didn’t see that coming. Their romance was one of my favorite parts, they were always honest about where they stood with each other, with no unnecessary misunderstandings or endless back-and-forth. That level of emotional maturity made their relationship feel effortless and incredibly satisfying to read. I was completely hooked from start to finish and couldn’t put it down until I finished it.
Temptation is the Second installment in the Poison In My Veins series by Cynthia Eden. Like every other book by Cynthia Eden this is an absolute winner! Suspenseful from the start and intriguing characters made me read it in one sitting! When Preston wakes up in the Darkness he realizes that he is not alone. Sloane Armstrong is with him, lying on top of him because they are buried alive! Will they stay alive long enough to catch the serial killer targeting them? I absolutely love this new series by the author, and I ‘m looking forward to reading the next book. I recieved this arc from the author and this review is my honest opinion.
Cynthia Eden is one of my auto buy authors and this book is exactly why.
I really liked Sloane and Preston. They both have darkness in their pasts that makes them understand each other like no one else can. The romance feels kismet. I also liked how protective they were of each other and how they communicated. Their connection was genuine. The romance really hit it out of the park for me.
The plot is fast paced and filled with action. There are some red flags that hint at who it may be but the reveal was still satisfying. Everything made sense too.
A great romantic suspense story! Can be read as a standalone.
I don’t think this author ever writes a bad book. This one was start to finish rollercoaster fun!!
An angel with eyes of darkness.
Sloane is a stalker of sorts but not in a bad way. She studies the children of serial killers. She gets caught up in some terrifying things happening in Preston’s life.
You don’t target innocent people sleeping in their beds. You are no monster, Preston.
Preston knows the truth of his past and thinks that makes him evil but the evil is all around them.
“You’re my angel, and you always will be.”
Shocking revaluations and a story that keeps you guessing until the end.
This is book 2 in the Poison in My Veins series by Cynthia Eden. I must be honest., I have read every book by Cynthia Eden and there isn’t a bad one to be had and I suspected that was the case here. And I was right! This book was such an exciting emotional thrill ride!! The story begins when a Seemingly damaged hero meets his perfect female counterpart while they are trapped in a buried coffin and keeps going a 100 miles an hour and doesn’t slow down until the very end. Loved it!
This is an awesome psychological thriller in book 2 of this series. Cynthia Eden had me at the very first page and I couldn’t put it down till I finished the last page. Sloane was introduced in book one. She has a dark past and studies adult children of serial killers now studying Preston Byron. They are buried alive, rescued and immediately are attracted to each other but he has thoughts of becoming like his father and not worthy of her. This is a fast paced, exciting, romantic mystery with POV from both characters. Would like to see more in this thrilling series.
We met Sloane in Compulsion and now she’s having her own adventure, if you call being buried alive with Preston Byron an adventure. Then it’s a roller coaster ride for them both. There’s heat, sexual tension, danger and some very scary revelations that make for a great story. Another keeper from Cynthia Eden who makes morally grey heroes way too appealing and strong FMCs who can match them.
I absolutely loved this book and was hooked from page one. Preston has been buried alive before, but now he’s been buried with Sloane. Loved how quickly he falls for her. But who buried them? Did the Last Breath Killer die or is there a copy cat killer? Loved the suspense and being shocked by the plot. Loved their happy ever after. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy and I highly recommend this book.
I love stories like this with dark characters. I like Sloane and Preston's story. I thought who the bad guy was but didn't realize there was 2. Way to go. Can't wait for the next one.
A decent enough romantic suspense. I didn't guess the killer ahead of the reveal, so that's a plus. I would have liked a little more character development and a little less instalove.
Cynthia Eden is truly a MASTER of romantic suspense! I loved this second installment of her new series. Sloane and Preston's story was a twisty, turning, suspenseful HEA.
Really quirky fun! Great romantic suspense once again from Cynthia Eden. The ending definitely gave me a surprise whiplash. Bring on Dominic and Josie! Hurry!
