Voyage of a Highlander: A Scottish Highland Romance

Rate this book
One broken engagement. One reckless ritual. One dangerous Highlander who was never part of the plan.

Ruby Douglas is having a spectacularly bad week. Her wedding is off, her fiancé is a cheat, and a desperate attempt to escape her life lands her in eighteenth-century Scotland—stranded on a remote island with no allies, and a very bad grasp of local customs.

Evan Campbell is trouble wrapped in a charming smile. A smuggler with enemies on his heels and secrets he keeps locked tight, the last thing he needs is a sharp-tongued woman who doesn’t belong in his world—and keeps getting him into fights. But when Ruby offers him payment in exchange for passage to Edinburgh, he sees opportunity. She sees escape.
What neither of them expects is the journey.

Forced together by bad roads and worse decisions, attraction simmers and secrets begin to fray. Evan’s past refuses to stay buried, and Ruby’s carefully constructed lie starts to crack. And the closer they get to their destination, the harder it becomes to pretend this is just a transaction.

Because when time travel, family secrets, and a forbidden love collide, some rules are meant to be broken.

A swoony, adventurous time travel romance featuring a reluctant rogue, a heroine out of her depth, and a journey that changes everything.

Katy Baker was born in London to an English mother and an American father. She grew up a stone's throw from Hampstead Heath which remains one of her favourite places in the world. During her twenties she spent several years living in San Francisco where she developed an abiding love of bagels before returning to her beloved London. Stories about second chances involving people with good hearts is always wonderful to see. Evan and Ruby certainly had an interesting journey both individually and in the context of family. Loved it!

Another fabulous tale! We met Ruby in the previous book in the series when her cousin Charlotte (Charlie) traveled back in time and met Niall Campbell. At that time, Ruby was preparing for her wedding to Daniel and Charlie was to meet her for a dress fitting. Now, Daniel proved to be a cheater, the wedding was off, and a distraught Ruby needed desparately to speak with Charlie. Using a spell to summon the fae that she found in an old book, Ruby attempted to contact Irene MacAskill, hoping that she could lead her to Charlie. Irene explained about balance and choices, then offered Ruby the opportunity to step back in time through the arch before her. What Ruby expected was that she would arrive in the same location, just in another century. What Ruby found was that she was on an island in the middle of some criminal negotiations. It was here that she met Evan Campbell and paid him to see her safely to Charlie, who it turns out was married to his brother. What follows is a journey filled with physical exertion and dangerous encounters. After a falling out with his family, Evan had spent years living outside the law to get by. In the process he made enemies, but none as tenacious as warlord Seoras MacInnes. As they return to his childhood lands, Evan and Ruby need to evade MacInnes’ clutches, and thwart his revolutionary actions. They also have to define their relationship, determine their future and reconcile with their pasts. There is never a dull moment in this story. Even when there are lulls in the action, emotional upheaval keeps the adreneline flowing. This story is filled with twists, unexpected complictions, surprises, and heartfelt moments. Ruby’s experience as a modern day risk analyst proves invaluable, and assists in thwarting MacInnes’ plans. This is an exciting story of love and redemption that is impossible to put down. Katy Baker is a masterful storyteller who never disappoints. I just love these Arch Through Time tales and always look forward to the next in the series!

Voyage of a Highlander Arch Through Time Series
A Scottish Highland Romance
Katy Baker
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ruby Douglas is having a bad go of it. She called her wedding off, as her fiancé cheated on her, and in a desperate attempt to go back in time and see her best friend Charlie, she ends up in eighteenth century Scotland, but not where she expected to end up. She ends up stranded on a remote island with no allies, and a not so good grasp of the ways of the locals.

Evan Campbell is trouble with a capital T. He uses his sexy smile to disarm those he feels are threats. He keeps his secrets locked up deeply inside because he's a smuggler, and the last thing he needs is a strange woman who doesn't belong in his world.
But then when Ruby offers him payment in exchange for passage to Edinburgh, he sees an opportunity and she sees an escape.

As they are forced together by bad roads, bad weather, and really bad decisions, an attraction starts to simmer between them and their secrets begin to slowly fray. Evan keeps his past close, but it refuses to stay buried, and Ruby's carefully constructed lie begins to crack.

When time travel, family secrets, and a forbidden love collide, some rules are meant to be broken.

Katy Baker is my hero. This book was absolutely fantastic. I gobbled it up like it was a delicious sweet and I had no will power to stop, so I didn't. I read in the car while my husband drove, I read at home, and I even read a bit while I was visiting my brother. I was so fascinated that I just couldn't put this book down. I truly believe this book is worth picking up and giving it a read. It's definitely worth it. Ms. Baker you never cease to astound me and I think your books get better and better every time.

This book involves a character that was briefly "seen" in the last book, Memory of a Highlander which old the love story of Charlie Douglas and Niall Campbell. Ruby Douglas is her cousin and she is aware of her cousin now living in the 17th century. When Ruby's finds out her fiancee cheated on her, she wants to go visit Charlie and try a spell to summon a fae. Enter Irene MacAskill.

It just so happens, Irene needs Ruby's he!p in another matter and is happy to send Ruby to the 17th century, where Ruby meets Evan Campbell, who may or may not be related to Niall Campell. Evan agrees, after payment of a locket, to take Ruby to Edinburgh and thus the adventure begins. I enjoyed the interaction between Ruby and Evan as well as Ruby's continuous references to the 21st century which could have ended in dire consequences for her.

I highly recommend this book as well as the entire series.

I received an ARC of this book from the author. My review is voluntary and honest. I enjoyed it so much that I ingend purchased it from Amazon when it was released

Ruby Douglas is the cousin to Charlie Douglas who we met in the last book.
When her fiancée cheats on her she calls off the wedding and wants to go back in time to see Charlie.
After meeting Irene MacAskill she steps through an arch and finds herself back in time in Scotland where she meets Evan Campbell.
Evan is a smuggler with lots of secrets.
This is just the beginning of the adventure.

“A swoony, adventurous time travel romance featuring a reluctant rogue, a heroine out of her depth, and a journey that changes everything”

This is another great story in this series.
I received a free copy of this book and freely and honestly leave my review.

Another Wonderful Voyage into Scotland

Well, Katy Baker had me devouring #28 of her sagas into ancient Scotland. This story had as much fun and intrigue that all of her stories contain. Redemption story for sure. Loved the twists and turns!
