For the drivers, it’s the millions of dollars spent for a shot at making it to the top, with the real possibility of being washed-up before they even finish school. It’s the violent physical forces inherent in racing the fastest cars, with cockpit temperatures soaring to 60 degrees Celsius. And it’s the gruelling mental vice-like squeeze in constant international travel, celebrity and expectation for superhuman results from yourself, your team, and almost a billion people who watch the sport across the planet.
For the teams, it’s a 24/7 commitment and a multi-billion-dollar spend to design, manufacture, and race two cars around the globe every two weeks; with exceptional results demanded from all areas of these well-oiled, precision operations – be they technical, mechanical, commercial, and logistics. Don’t deliver? You’re out, and the voracious beast rolls on.
Stewart Bell, who has covered the sport for more than 20 years, takes you behind the scenes – and gives you the full picture of what it’s like to be inside the sport, well beyond what you might have seen on Netflix’s blockbuster Formula 1: Drive To Survive.

If you’re like me and you watch Drive to Survive on Netflix and then immediately go down a Google rabbit hole trying to understand everything about F1… this book is absolutely for you 😅
Formula One is incredibly information dense.. in the best possible way. It’s packed with data, history, behind the scenes insights and facts that really help make sense of the sport beyond just race day highlights.
I chose to listen to this on audio with Stewart Bell narrating it himself and that was a great choice. You can hear the passion behind the detail and it is clear Stewart has expert knowledge of F1 and could talk about it all day long.
It does require a bit of focus at times because there’s a lot going on but if you enjoy learning the mechanics, history and structure behind F1, that depth is exactly what makes it so good.
Dense, detailed and perfect for anyone wanting to level up their F1 knowledge. Highly recommend for the rev heads and drive to survive newbies like me!
I found the book quite illogical in its sequencing, and the style of writing wasn't for me, however it may be for someone else. Also, it didn't really tell me anything about the sport I didn't already know.
