The Targeted is a powerful and timely novel. What’s it about? In a nutshell, it’s about broken trust, abuse of power, and innocence stolen. It’s about redemption, vindication, and learning to live in community and not going lone ranger through life.
This was a very hard read, but that’s not a bad thing. Not at all. It speaks volumes to the quality of the writing and the character development. I believe this is the best of Cara Putman.
Let me tell you why.
First, it has a “ripped from the headlines” vibe. It’s very current and relevant. And it’s a tough subject to tackle. The author does so with gentleness and finesse.
Next, the character development. Putman guides your feelings towards each character, using words and subtle nuances. There’s one person I didn’t care for at all, but by the end my heart completely changed as the story unfolded.
Continuing on, the story held my attention from start to finish. The Targeted opens with a powerful and heartbreaking scene and continues to build from there. Several unexpected moments give it that twist I absolutely love in a novel of suspense.
Finally, the message of faith and the sweet romance (which is light, hitting the perfect note) flow organically within the story. It’s a multilayered story and the rhythm is consistent and genuine.
I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited. Very highly recommend, with a mild trigger warning about abuse of young girls. But very mild because I think you’ll find healing in these pages.
Targeted handled a very difficult subject, which not everyone has the courage to tackle, but Cara Putman provided a story with the right amount of detail to give the reader an idea of what happened without giving too much to make readers uncomfortable.
The legal side of the story was also done in such a smooth way that you could understand the process but did not feel overwhelmed with all the legal jargon. The romance was also in the background which I appreciated considering the subject matter and the focus of the plot.
The mystery and suspense had a slow build with the intensity climaxing at the end. The author also added twists and murder at the right moments. Some of the twists you sort of suspected as the story unfolds and details were provided to the reader, and others totally pulled your feet out from under you.
“....that didn’t matter. If people leave her or let her down. God never would. He promised that, and his promises were true. Always.”
I loved the remembrance that God is always with us and that no matter what challenges we face or seasons we are in, He is with us, always.
*I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Wow! My first book I've read by this author and certainly won't be the last. I love how the author's experience with law brings a fresh perspective to the court room, so to speak.
I really loved the characters in this story. The strength of Chloe and how she brought that through along with her faith to help those around her not be victims as well. Her stepping up and speaking out was impactful. And I loved the support system she had as well around her.
Even though I read this book before the rest of the series...I know a real no no, it made me intrigued to pick up the rest of the books.
*Trigger warnings for abuse and grooming
Thank you to #kregelbooks for the complimentary book, all thoughts are always my own. 4.5⭐
The Targeted by Cara Putnam reads like a serial newspaper article. The events in the story do happen, but the difference was seeing the story told from the victim's perspective. The plot is not really that suspenseful like normal suspense novel. The suspense element happens in the victims' mind as she tries to seek retribution for what has happened to her and other girls in the past. Putnam does a wonderful job at showing a strong heroine, who does have some issues, but the strong heroine fights throughout the entire story. Putnam dives into the effect of this type of situation would have on the mind, body, and their outlook on life. I love how Putnam did not create a character who had her life together. I liked that she had issues all around that she had to deal with. Made her more relatable to the average person. Overall, The Targeted by Cara Putnam will draw reader's into the story with the heroine's plight but they will stay to wonder if justice will be served.
I received a complimentary copy of Targeted by Cara Putnam from Kregal Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
In The Targeted, a gymnastics coach strives to heal and right past wrongs, enlisting the help of a protective law student in the pursuit of justice. Addressing tough topics such as childhood abuse and trauma, Cara strikes a perfect balance of emotion and page-turning suspense without the story feeling overwhelming. This is part of a larger series, but I enjoyed the sense of history, friendship, and community without feeling confused, despite not having read the other books. I found Chloe's journey of working through the pain to embrace beauty inspirational! ⚖️🤸♀️
Favorite quotes:

This is my first Cara Putman book I’ve read and I am hooked! Even though the subject matter is a heavier topic, it did not feel like a heavy read. A page turner, I didn’t want to put it down, I wanted to keep reading and find out how it would all come to conclusion. I enjoyed Cara’s writing style. The depth and strength of her characters, their resilience to keep going and to do the next right thing. I was rooting for Dare and Chloe through the entire book, in more ways than one! I will definitely be reading more of her books!
“‘I am always alone.’ He will never leave me or forsake me… It didn’t matter if people would leave her or let her down. God never would. He promised that, and his promises were true. Always.”
This review may well be one of the hardest I’ve ever written. Because The Targeted by Cara Putman, contains such sensitive and trigger-inducing content that I may have ever read. The legal drama, book three of the Secrets to Keep series, tells the story of the last of three young women involved in the legal world. Very well executed and written with an obvious knowledge of the law, this fictional story becomes very relatable and painful to read. Plus, a second trigger was lying in wait in the form of Cloe’s mom, as we see her fading in and out of reality with her early-onset dementia.
Putman shines a light on how easily abuse can occur between a minor and a trusted adult. Her character, Cloe, is a great example of a groomed victim who, because of age, trust in adults, and negative reaction when she tries to share bits of her story, stuffs it all inside. Without her once beloved older sister, Ginny, who left fourteen years prior, and her mother’s dementia clouded mind, Cloe has learned to become an island onto herself.
Roadblocks occur when she attempts to bring her abuser to justice. Sometimes, Cloe herself is the issue. Sometimes it is others. Can 2nd year law student Dare help her file a complaint years after the event? What happens when the abuser is closer than Cloe is comfortable with? Will she use the community of friends and law resources around her, or will she quietly run away from her memories and hurt?
There’s hope in this story! I could keep reading, hard as it was to be confronted with truths and memories of the past, as I realized Cloe would fight not for herself but for the new crop of gymnasts. She is determined to make a difference. The hardest question keeps her going: “What if by not trying, by staying silent, we’ve all been complicit? We’ve all allowed him to continue his behavior because none of us have taken the risk of saying it has to stop?” Ooh. Rough. Time to take action!
While needing to stay unattached as her legal counsel, Dare realizes his attraction to this brave, strong-though-wounded young gym coach. He looks for ways to help, and prays for her. I loved this line… “How was it possible that the man morphed more into her hero each time he showed up? It wasn’t so much big, heroic actions as the small, consistent moments of showing up again and again.” That’s how these two and their team hope to win at this terrible loop life has thrown them… start with the small steps, complete each task step by step, until they have solved this case and won. Unfortunately, a big twist occurs and the action becomes very urgent!
In summary, expect a very well-written read with potentially difficult subject matter. I wish there had been a trigger warning at the front of the book. But… knowing what kind of fiction this author writes, I did know she would show how God can bring good out of bad. That makes a hard story worth reading!
I received a copy of the book from JustRead Tours. I also bought my own ebook. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.
Notable Quotables:
“He couldn’t change her history, but he could create a different future.” (Dare)
“Remember that sometimes God simply asks us to take the next step. He rarely tells us every part of the journey that’s coming.” - Janae
“Before, this was about me and the past. Now, it’s about the present and protecting my girls, today’s gymnasts.” - Clie
“‘What could I do as a junior man on the team?’ ‘Speak up. Believe them. Validate their experience.’” - Dare, Cloe
“Life demanded a decision. Everyone else had to move on, even if she didn’t.” ( Cloe)
“She needed the possibility of more, even if she chose to stay. What she really wanted was the illusion of choice.” (Cloe)
“She knew her strength at one level, but at another level, she was still the girl who had allowed bad things to happen to her.” ( Cloe)
Sisters Chloe and Ginny were both impacted by a gymnastics coach that groomed athletes for nefarious reasons. How they react and work toward resolution are very different, which rings true. Tragedy hits everyone uniquely.
Dare is a law student that wants to take on Chloe's case to bring down the coach. As a student, he needs a professor/lawyer to be on board with him.
There are a lot of twists as the story unfolds. Chloe's faith in God grows as she take steps to move forward with her life while at the same time taking action against her former gymnastics coach.
My gratitude to publisher Kregel for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.
chloe ainsworth's past has haunted her for years... now that her abuser's back in town, it's time to confront what happened—and prevent others from getting hurt in the same way. law student dare shepherd offers to help her, but of course, they need to find proof to really make a difference.
the targeted is such an interesting legal drama. the pace moves slowly, but steadily, and i enjoyed seeing chloe and dare work and reason to reveal the truth productively and legally. there's some added tension with the return of chloe's sister and her alternate plans, as well as a lighter thread of romance alongside it all. it all makes for a satisfying read as it plays out—though it's relevancy makes it hard, at times, and emotional, too.
it's the third book in the series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. the former main characters are chloe's best friends, though, so i'm sure knowing their stories makes it fun to see them again.
overall, the targeted is a solid read. if you're looking for some legal drama with suspense and romance, definitely check it out.
(i received a complimentary copy from the author and/or publisher. i was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions i have expressed are my own.)
considerations: —language: none —spice: kisses only —faith: consistent christian themes and mentions —content: a parent with alzheimer's, mentions of abuse and suicide
Another superb story from Cara Putman. The Targeted is an intense, powerful, romantic suspense. Tough topics include child abuse, abandonment, guilt, and lack of trust. The underlying message is we are all worth more than our past experiences and how we've been treated. Father God always sees and loves us.
The Targeted by Cara Putman has blown me away. I could not put this book down. There are so many layers to this story that slowly get pulled back. Chloe was abused by her gymnastic coach, and when he shows up back in town helping at the gym, she decides to take action, so no one else is hurt. Chole brings her case to the school’s legal clinic to get some help. Dare is the one who gets handed her case and starts to help put together the case. Though everything he does seems to be getting pushback from the clinic director. Dare and Chloe work together to gather some more details to help their case. But as they dig, they find there is more to this case than it seems.
With such a heavy topic and something that happens in real life, this story was great to dive into from both the perspective of the victim and the plaintiff. The character development was great. Chloe is working through trauma and her mother’s dementia while trying to find her path in life. Dare is working through school to become a lawyer, but being an older student, things are a little different.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. A positive review was not required. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
The Targeted was excellent! It kept me up at night reading. I absolutely could not put it down. Author Cara Putman is on my list of favorite authors. I always look forward to new releases. The Targeted does not disappoint. Check it out today! I received a complimentary copy from the author. Opinions are my own.
I had been wanting to read Cara Putman for quite a while because she’s so highly recommended, and The Targeted did not disappoint.
Although legal dramas aren’t usually my go-to genre, I found the legal aspects of the story fascinating and realistic. This is actually the third book in the series, and even though I hadn’t read the first two, I had no trouble following the story. In fact, I enjoyed the friendships and connections so much that I now want to go back and read Janae and Margeaux’s stories as well.
This book tackles several difficult and heartbreaking topics, including sexual abuse, family loss, and mental illness. Readers should be aware of those themes going in, but I appreciated how thoughtfully they were handled. The abuse is never described in a graphic way, and the author approaches these sensitive subjects with care and compassion.
Both Chloe and Dare felt relatable and authentic as they struggled with issues of trust, grief, and healing. Chloe has endured so much—surviving abuse, losing her sister for fourteen years, and facing her mother’s possible Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Yet despite everything, she remains resilient and determined to protect the young gymnasts in her care. I admired her fierce desire to make a difference and keep other girls safe from what she experienced.
Dare was equally compelling. Haunted by the loss of his sister and the guilt he carries over her tragic death, he has his own emotional walls to overcome. I loved how patient, gentle, and protective he was with Chloe. Their romance is definitely a secondary thread to the suspense plot, but it’s a sweet slow-burn relationship built on trust and respect. I especially appreciated how carefully Dare respected professional boundaries while Chloe was his client and how safe Chloe felt in his presence.
One of my favorite parts of the book was the friendship between Chloe, Janae, and Margeaux. Having survived similar trauma, they share a powerful bond and unwavering loyalty to one another. Their support and encouragement added an extra layer of heart to the story.
The suspense kept me turning pages. The investigation was engaging, the danger felt real, and there was a constant sense that trouble could be lurking around any corner. While I guessed a few developments, the story still delivered some surprising twists, particularly toward the end. The conclusion was both satisfying and hopeful.
I also appreciated the faith element woven throughout the story. Dare openly lives out his faith, frequently turning to prayer and seeking God’s guidance. Chloe’s faith journey is more tentative, but it grows naturally over the course of the story.
More than anything, this novel serves as an important reminder of how vulnerable young people can be to abuse and how crucial it is for parents and trusted adults to maintain open communication with them. Reading stories like this always saddens me because these situations happen far too often in real life. My heart aches for the victims whose lives have been forever changed. We need greater awareness, stronger support systems, and the courage to speak up against abuse whenever it occurs.
Overall, The Targeted is a gripping, emotionally powerful suspense novel with memorable characters, meaningful themes, and a hopeful message. I highly recommend it—but be prepared for a story that tackles some heavy topics.
I received a complimentary copy from Kregel Publications but wasn’t required to post a positive review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
The Targeted is the third book in a series full of suspense, twists, and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat! First things first, read the series in order. You really need to read this series in order to know all that is happening. This is my opinion. Other people might have other opinions, but we all know mine is the correct one.
Once there were some little girls. They took gymnastics classes. And what happened there was a secret that they didn’t even talk about together. Because it was that horrific. They each experienced it on their own and know the others did too, but nobody is willing to talk about it or do anything about it.
Nobody, that is, until Chloe does. Because her abuser is back. And he’s back at the gym working with young girls. Chloe sees him doing things that he did when she was a girl, and she becomes a mama bear for her young charges. She will stop at nothing to make sure they’re safe and spared from what happened to her and her friends.
I’m not going to go into a lot of the backstory here because you do get some of that in the first two books as you go through the other two girls’ stories in the friendship trios.
Chloe is going to law school. She’s going to do it. She’s going to become a lawyer like her two best friends. But her life isn’t like theirs. She has to work hard to make money for the bills while taking care of her mother, who has some issues. Plus, her sister ran off 14 years ago, and they haven’t heard from her since. That is, until she shows up and with her comes a warning that the bad man of her past is coming. And then he shows up!
They’re both determined to take him down. Though they’re going to go about it in totally different ways.
This is full of suspense, plus some romance as well. I read it in one sitting because I refused to be a quitter and stop reading!
I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from JustRead Publicity Tours. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.
3.5 stars "Of course she knew that evil's presence didn't mean God wasn't God or that he wasn't good. But it sometimes made it hard to find him."
Having survived for so long feeling lost and alone in her fears and regrets, former gymnast Chloe Ainsworth finally works up the courage to solicit the help of a local legal clinic, deciding that she cannot move forward with her life until she resolves deeply traumatic experiences from her past. Law student Dare Shepherd listens carefully to her testimony, and agrees that the intimate personal information that Chloe has entrusted into his oversight needs to litigated, but if, as his supervisor insists, they need corroboration from additional sources in order to file a formal complaint, that poses a significant problem. Years have gone by and the witnesses were all minors at the time.
As if conjured up, the man from Chloe's nightmares arrives back in town after fourteen years of absence, and gains employment at the very gym where multiple young girls had been compromised. With a sense of urgency, Chloe and Dare seek every bit of evidence they can find, and what they uncover is extremely disturbing and inherently more dangerous than they ever imagined.
Navigating these case details combined with absorbing the emotional mine fields buried throughout this story necessitates a reader who not only admires amazing plot twists, but solemnly trusts the author to handle sensitive material in such a way that the end result brings solid assurance that God never means for us to feel alone, or forsaken, or forgotten.
"It didn't matter if people would leave her or let her down. God never would. He promised that, and his promises were true. Always."
His "gaze lifted from the pages to the framed image of a stone statue hanging by his office door—the Contemplation of Justice statue that sat near the main steps of the Supreme Court building. The larger Lady Justice held a much smaller statue of a blindfolded justice. “You fight for her. Always it’s to find the right side of the balance of justice. It’s not easy, and it takes work.” He tapped the sheets of paper. “This is a reminder that there are always two sides to a story and neither is one hundred percent true, because we each believe our story to the point that we become skewed by it.”
Chloe has let the choices of others impact her life for far too long. She might not be able to change her past, but she can make sure that others do not face the same future. Even if it means that her name and reputation is on the line.
As a law student, Dare wants to help others who are facing struggles. Chloe's case is no less complicated than the woman herself. And the closer they get to the truth, the more the danger appears. Will they find the answers they need.
This is a tough but meaningful read. While the book does not get into too many details, the main point of the plot is investigating a coach who targeted the girls in his program. The author did her research, and she causes the reader to ponder what needs to happen to protect vulnerable children.
Parts of the plot are quite unpredictable. The legal aspect is one component. So is a bit of romance. Faith is a smaller part of the story, but the main characters did need to learn to depend on God. I am glad that I read this book!
I did read an advanced copy of this book as a part of a tour. I wanted to read and review it. All opinions are my own.
This novel tells the powerful and compelling story of a former gymnast who wants to save other young gymnasts from suffering the same kind of sexual abuse that she did as a child. When her predator returns to town, Chloe is even more motivated to take him to court in order to make sure that he never hurts another young athlete. the case gets complicated as others are involved, including Chloe’s sister Ginny who returns to town about the same time as Coach Alex does. The mystery is how in the world Chloe will be able to face the giant. She is indeed a modern-day David facing huge odds that she can prove her case and keep the coach away from the girls. The story was riveting and heart-breaking at times, but it is also one that held me captivated and cheering for Chloe and her lawyer Dare, a young law student who takes on the case pro bono. There are plenty of twists and surprises which kept me engaged and turning the pages as fast as I could. This is a fast-paced legal suspense with a little romance and plenty of thrilling moments. The characters were realistic and even though I really didn’t like Coach Alex, he was realistically portrayed as a sleazy make who takes advantage of his position. The main characters were likable and relatable, and the plot was well-crafted to tell a story that is thought-provoking as well as a warning for parents to be aware of the backgrounds of those who teach their children. The love that Chloe felt for her young students was evident as she was determined not to back down even when she was in danger. Great story told in a thoroughly engaging way with a perfect pace. I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and I purchased my own copy to keep. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions expressed are my own.
I really enjoyed this suspenseful story that kept me on the edge of my seat! The stakes felt higher in this kind of story so I was even more on edge than in a different type of suspense because I kept worrying about what the coach was going to do and whether the girls were going to be safe. Chloe also had a lot going on in her life, from her sister suddenly showing up to her mom's possible Alzheimer's diagnosis to trying to decide if she was going to start law school to deciding she wants to sue the coach who abused her and trying to figure out the steps she needs to take. It felt like a lot and I wasn't even the one living it! It was interesting to see behind the scenes at the law clinic as she and Dare tried to figure out what steps to take. Besides their mutual interest in the law, they both had a strong faith and actually prayed together at one point; there were other mentions of prayer and depending on the Lord for strength or remembering He was good even in the hard times. They were drawn to each other but were still trying to keep a professional distance because of the lawsuit. I appreciated how respectful Dare was and that he wanted to make sure she felt respected with everything she had been through. There were different suspenseful things happening in the story, from her sister disappearing again to creepy things happening to a murder. One thing I got frustrated with was her lack of worry about her safety sometimes. I kept wanting to yell, "lock the door!" Even though this was book three, it worked pretty well as a stand-alone. I'm looking forward to reading those. I recommend this book if you like suspense!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I was not compensated for this review. All opinions are my own.
After following a trio of friends who meet as gymnasts at a young age in the series' previous books, it's paralegal Chloe Ainsworth who pulls the trigger in bringing their former coach to justice for the abuse he has inflicted on them and potentially others. Paying respect to the real life experiences of Rachael Denhollander and other survivors, this is a brave story that exposes evil and reveals the high cost of naming abusers. This is not an easy read but it's a necessary one that cautions families about the need for safe sporting environments. As Chloe does everything in her power to protect the next generation of gymnasts, she is joined by law student Dare Shepherd who supports her and in turn, falls for her spirit and heart for these young girls.
The Targeted is a fitting conclusion to this series about women who have unfortunately suffered the devastating consequences of a dangerous coach, but who have been able to enter the legal profession with the hope of making it right for others. The author provides a stunning layer of details that keeps the story moving, allowing us to see what resources are available to the survivors in their quest for justice and truth. Readers who enjoy Christian legal dramas will find this series and book to be memorable and gratifying reminders of how God is a just God who cares for His children, especially during humanity's darkest moments.
Christian Suspense Romance is a genre that really intrigues me. The Targeted by Cara Putman is Book 3 in the Secrets to Keep series.
WOW, the book starts out with a "hooked into the book" theme and it stayed that way throughout the book. The main characters are Chloe Ainsworth and Dare Shepherd, Chloe is Gymnastics Coach, as she has had a love for Gymnastics since she was a young girl. Dare Shepherd is a Law Student and a town local. Chloe is terrified for the Gymnastic Students when someone from her past is hired for a position at the Gym she works at. She will also go to great lengths to protect the young Gymnasts she coaches. She goes into protection mode because she doesn't want the young girls to become victims like she was a victim. Dare Shepherd, who works at the local legal clinic, sits down and listens to Chloe's story. Dare immediately knows that he must do whatever he can to protect the Students and Chloe, They run into a hurdle when the Legal Clinic Director doesn't want to take on the case. I really LOVE that Dare and Chloe decide they have no time to waste and they begin to try to resolve the case and most importantly protect the Student Gymnasts. The pair come across many obstacles, although they press on even harder. I enjoyed seeing Dare and Chloe get closer in friendship and romantically as they work on this case. The storyline reminds me of real life events that happened in the Gymnastics World. I am a fan of Gymnastics and I really appreciate that the author took the time to bring such an important topic to the readers in a fictional manner. I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who enjoys Christian Suspense Romance. WONDERFUL BOOK!
It is sickening the lengths people will go through to satisfy dark desires, and the ripple effect it has is so far-reaching. This is the thought that stayed with me the entire time I was reading The Targeted. If you know anything about the US Gymnastics abuse scandal that came to light a few years ago, then you will see parallels in this novel, as it also deals with similar abuse.
If you’re wanting a light and airy read, this is not the book for you. This handles tough subjects that hold a lot of weight, but it is all handled with the utmost care and respect. I appreciate the author’s bravery for delving as deep as she did into this subject.
You can't help but feel a heaviness while reading, especially when it comes to Chloe. It's clear she has been through it, and my heart went out to her instantly. Heroic Dare always seems to be there when Chloe needs him the most and is a bright spot in an otherwise darker read. Their dynamic is refreshing, and it was nice to see Chloe not have to deal with everything alone.
There was a shocking plot twist that I did not see coming that had me audibly gasping. It was so unexpected and turned the entire story upside down for me.
While a harder read due to the weighty subject matter, I enjoyed this novel. The characters are well fleshed out, believable, and easy to root for. Plus, it has a satisfying ending that was believable and reminds you that there’s always hope, even in the hard..
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.
From the first page to the last, I was drawn into Chloe's story. Not only is it a heartbreaking story of abuse and the ramifications of living with what happened to her, but it's also a story of hope. Of realizing that even when we can't see or feel God's presence in our lives He is always there. Guiding us, and fighting for us. Chloe is a relatable character in that she feels stuck with something that happened to her in her youth gymnastics career. She wants to speak up and protect other girls from having what happened to her happen to them. She takes a lot of brave steps to insure that the perpetrator faces justice. I admired her bravery in taking steps to shine a light on the evil that was done to her. Dare is the attorney that Chloe gets assigned for her case. He's a law student whose sister suffered a tragic fate, so he's determined to help Chloe as much as he can. The chemistry between the two of them is subtle, but gives just enough romantic vibes to satisfy the romance lovers among us. I really enjoy getting an inside view into how the law works in this book. The author does a great job of giving us that view without getting too far in the weeds of legal language. I also really appreciate that while this book is part of a series, each book can easily be read on its own without feeling lost in any way. This book had some twists and turns in it that I wasn't fully expecting. It kept me wanting to turn the pages to see how things would turn out. * I read an early ARC copy from the publisher/author. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Targeted is book three in the Secrets to Keep series that is written by Cara Putman. I have not read the whole series, but there were no issues following along. It blends legal suspense, emotional healing, faith themes, and a romance subplot. I was hooked immediately. One of the things that you can count on from this author is that you will be on the edge of your seat.
The story follows Chloe Ainsworth, a gymnastics coach who survived abuse by a former coach during her childhood. When her estranged sister suddenly returns after fourteen years with the alarming news that Chloe’s abuser is back in town, Chloe becomes determined to protect the young gymnasts she now coaches. She is determined to make sure that what he did to her did not happen to anyone else - she enlists the help of Dare Shepherd, a law student working at a legal clinic. She has been hitting roadblocks with assistance, and it does not seem that anyone believes her story. Which, I can understand - as a assault victim myself (age 8) noone believed me either .
I really admired Chloe. She had to confront her past - and has to face what feels like a giant. I admire her strength and determination. The author has written such a powerful story that will bring healing to many.(It’s me - I am many) If you like legal thrillers, romantic suspense, relatable characters, ripped from the headlines stories then this is for you.
Thank you to the author, publisher and JustRead Publicity Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.
It is a given that I will get absolutely nothing done, including sleep, once I crack open a book by this author. I have been engrossed in this legal thriller for hours all while holding my breath and punching the arm of my chair at times. I wanted to see someone pay for this vile behavior.
Chloe needed closure and justice. I admired her willingness to share her deepest secrets for all to read about and see so that hopefully others would not suffer. Dare is a law student at local law clinic who took Chloe's case on with his whole heart. He was all in when it came to this case and seeing it through.
This David and Goliath type story will tug on your heart and even make you tear up at times. It will also anger you to read about an adult using their authority to betray a child.
I was very impressed with the finesse that was used by Cara Putman to handle a very delicate, but also relevant subject, while still making the case.
Finally, Chloe's faith is the one thing in her life that she knows is immovable. This young woman was so much stronger than she knew.
I was fully invested in this story from start to finish and simply could not stop reading. This book is going to stay with me long after I have finished it.
Thank you to JustRead Publications and the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Targeted is a story that unfortunately, happens all too often in real life. This is a story that is told through the victim's viewpoint. And a victim that is actively seeking justice for herself and those who like her who have been abused.
Chloe is trying to keep her life from unraveling. From caring for her mother with some medical issues, financial problems, and trying to figure out if she should continue her law degree are some big issues she is facing. She is also dealing with a past that has shook her to her core, all the while being a gymnastic coach and trying to protect other young girls from the abuse she and some of her friends have endured. Add that her missing sister for fourteen years is back. And so is the man that has abused them.
Chloe is a character that really considers all of the ramifications that her decisions may have on others. But she seeks justice, and she finds help in Dare Shepherd a law student that takes up her cause.
There were a lot of moving pieces in this story and some hard issues that were tackled. Trust in others is important, and when that trust is broken who do you turn to?
I was provided a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review, and all views and opinions are my own.
Cara Putman has penned another stellar suspense story. Chloe Ainsworth is a paralegal who is contemplating entering law school. She has ghosts in her background that come racing back to the present when her sister returns after a long absence. And the gymnastics coach who abused her in the past makes his appearance too. Lots of cloak and dagger happenings to put Chloe in danger again. But with the help of law student Dare Shepherd, she pursues justice. Dare was a great hero. He was juggling a lot of things in his own career but was thoughtful, caring and perceptive. Intriguing and involved plotting that you can tell took a lot of research, kept me on my toes. The author handled the sensitive topic with grace and at the same time got the point across. It was nice to see friends Janae and Margueaux from previous books. The romantic element was subtle but nicely done. The faith of the characters showed their reliance on God and that they were moving forward from their shared trauma. I enjoyed this unique story and informative in one of my favorite genres. * A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Kregel through Just Read Publicity Tours. I have read each of the books in this series and love each one of them. While they touch on a real and raw subject, the author does it with grace and dignity. I believe that this series needs to be read in order to get the entire back story of these three friends. After finishing this book, I think I will go back and reread the previous ones. This story revolves around Chole whom is still struggling from what happened to her as a young child and now a couple of people are back in town from her past. One is her sister, Ginny that she doesn't know how to react about her being back home. The other is the villian in the story and the one who destroyed her past and other young girls. Then you learn about a young law student who is trying to help Chloe. Can Dare help Chloe go through with the charges against the coach and help her to come out of the shell that she has built around herself? I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for an early copy to read. I have also purchased a copy to go with the other books in the series. While I don't understand anything about gymnastics , that didn't hinder me from reading this book. Since reading it, I might just have to watch some gymnastics.
Sometimes God just simply asks us to take the next step. He rarely tells us every part of the journey that’s coming.
Fourteen years earlier Ginny and Chloe Ainsworth were almost fixtures at the local gymnastics club in the town of Kedgewick. Suddenly Ginny was gone and Chloe was alone with their mother. Working as a paralegal at her best friend’s firm is not quite what she was hoping for. Accepted into law school, she plans to return to school and get her degree. Just as abruptly, Ginny is back. Unfortunately, so is the coach that had abused Chloe and others. Deciding it was time to make sure that did not happen again, Chloe went to the Law School Clinic for free legal advice on how to proceed with filing a complaint.
Follow along as things get very interesting and dangerous as this complaint seems to take on a life of its own. Will Chloe and those around her begin to understand that God promises to take the worst things that happen to us and somehow turn them into good? Received through Kregel Publications and NetGalley, these impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.
The subject matter makes this a hard read though the author does a good job of guarding and caring for those involved it may trigger some readers. I like the characters in this series. Janae, Margeaux, and Chloe were childhood friends with a fierce bond. In The Targeted we finally get to see Chloe's story. She's the glue that holds the law office together, anticipates needs, has things done before she's asked. She's a stellar quiet office professional. Now we get to know the whys behind her determination. I like Dare. He is compassionate and wise. He is almost as determined as Chloe. And of course he loves Dobby so he must be a keeper! I struggled with some of the threads in this story. There are still some things I'm not sure were wrapped up. Perhaps they're inferred? Maybe there's more to come? I struggled with the change between third and first person narratives. I had to stop and back up a few times to figure out who was talking. I appreciate the author's note at the end to provide a bit of perspective. Maybe I should have read that part first. Thank you to Kregel, the author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this series finale. All opinions are my own.
With this third book in the gripping Secrets to Keep series, the author succeeds admirably in creating a powerful, suspenseful legal drama while portraying the trauma of abuse in the world of gymnastics with grace and respect. She references real-life cases but with no graphic content. The story is driven by compelling characters who ran the gamut of my emotions. Featured as the main characters are Chole Ainsworth, a gymnastics coach with an abusive past and Dare Shepherd, a law student who she enlists to help her protect her students and find justice. Well-placed plot twists kept me reading expectantly. I appreciate the light faith thread with reminders of the spiritual truths of God's presence even in dark circumstances and forgiveness. A budding romance adds emotional depth and interest. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and heartily recommend it. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
