Corinne Granger doesn’t want to get out of bed. Or paint. Or talk about her feelings. Losing Michael, the man who taught her to believe in love, has left the 25-year-old portrait artist trapped in grief, a stranger to herself. Before Michael’s death, she was a force to be reckoned with. Intelligent. Talented. Terrifying. And Michael adored it all—even her hot temper and her sharp tongue. When you lose the only person who “gets” you, the world becomes a lonely place.

Wes Clarkson can numb the pain of missing his best friend if he pushes his body hard enough. A personal trainer and Ironman triathlete, Wes can forget his grief at the gym—or between the legs of one of his clients. And this works for him as long as he doesn’t think about the promise he made to Michael on his deathbed—to look after Corinne. But who could handle such a woman?!?

The only thing Corinne and Wes had in common before Michael died…was Michael. But when the two find themselves living under the same roof, everything changes.

Is there hope for the man who’s never been in love and for the woman who’s afraid to love again?

Dying best friend asks our hero to take care of his girlfriend for him when he no longer is around. Normally, his best friend's girlfriend never liked him and he also thought she was a bit b*tchy. But now, there is a wish of a dying best friend so he needs to do it right so he shows a real effort to take care of her while she is mourning. During this time, both of them realize that they never gave each other a chance to get to know each other better so when they do, they find out that they actually like each other.

*********************************************

Their relationship is a slow burn and very slowly, they get closer and start to feel attracted to each other. Their slow burn is so slow that their first and only making love scene is in the last chapter before the Epilogue. And before that, there is only a scene where they kissed, nothing else. So, it is a low-steam book.

*********************************************

As far as I am concerned, the book is boring and dragging. I couldn't connect to either of the characters. Maybe, it is already hard for me to accept a relationship between them. Normally, the hero falling for the girlfriend/spouse of a best friend who dies is usually something I have a problem accepting. It should be done so very well that I could feel it and accept it (See Consolation Duet for the best execution of this trope). In this case, I didn't feel it so I couldn't accept it very well. It could be me, though, I don't know. What I know is this book didn't do it for me :(

*********************************************

Also, I realized that Ms Fournet has a good talent but she tends to get lost in the details, thus boring the reader. Just saying...

*********************************************

- Dual point of view
- 292 pages

*********************************************

Safety: He was a man-wh*re and she had a boyfriend when they met first (his BFF) but now when the situation is changed for both of them and after they start to feel attracted to one another, there is no one else, no OW/OM drama.

(Well, actually there is one scene where she gets drunk and intends to do a one-night stand with a guy just to forget how much she wants the hero but he interferes and takes her home to sober up.)

Now and again when I choose to read one of the books from the blog tours I help host for and end up enjoying it, its not often I choose one I can't relate to.

Corinne Granger is a painter, and since loosing Michael she is unable to concentrate on painting, let alone interested in it at all.

Michael was her lover, her best friend, her world.

Michael had taught her to believe in love.

She is so wrapped up in grief, will she ever believe in love again, would she ever want to.

Corrine, pre Michael days was a fiery, self opinionated, talented 'go getter' and her hot tempers were well known.

Michael accepted this about her, he loved her for it and despite it.

Wes Clarkson is a friend/or was a friend of Michaels, he is also a personal trainer.

He hides and buries his grief at the gym, if he works out hard enough, he doesn't have to think, if he burns calories hard enough, he doesn't have to feel.

Corrine and Wes are opposite's but connected in grief of Michael they both loved and adored.

Something happens where they both have to share living quarters, and this of course brings them in close proximity. Every single day.

My thoughts:

Its predictable what will happen at the end really, or part way through at least. But even saying that, I did enjoy the way the author told the story. It has an easy flow to it hence an easy read.

I've had to give it 4 stars from me simply because, I can't fault it at all as a romance book. Its not outstanding, but its on equal par with a lot of romance writers I have read.

I received my copy from the author via a blog tour in exchange for my honest unbiased review

RATING: 4.5 STARS

I really REALLY liked this one. Very believable characters. Very realistic story. This is my first experience with Stephanie Fournet and let me tell you -- this author knows how to write very real and believable characters. Now I've never lost anybody that close to me like Corinne, our female protagonist has; but after reading this book I can definitely say that I have a new glimpse into what loss can be like.

Legacy follows a young woman, Corinne Granger, who is trying (and failing) to continue on living after the death of her boyfriend, Michael. She's stopped doing things that were important to her, she's stopped caring about eating, taking care of herself, keeping a roof over her head -- you name it. She's in a bad place. In comes Michael's best friend, Wes, who has been asked by Michael, on his death bed, to look after Corinne. Little did either of these two know what all of that entailed.

I had a really emotional connection with both of these characters. Corinne is a very stubborn, borderline rude individual that rubs Wes the wrong way. And Wes is a fitness nut, who can be considered to be a bit of a ladies man. Neither one of these two really aim to understand and know one another. The only real connection they shared was Michael. Wes and Corinne living together was SUCH a push that, quite frankly, really needed to happen in order for the story to progress the way that it did.

There is a TON of character development on the part of both Wes and Corinne -- mainly for Corinne in my opinion. Most of Wes' development simply comes from the revelation (through the lens of Corinne) that not all is as it seems. But Corinne has to make a really big transformation throughout the book and it was a really great experience.

I loved seeing these two together, even when they were at each others' throats. The chemistry was unreal. Even though I knew that they would end up together in some way, reading through and living the experience was still a fantastic and unexpected experience. I find it so difficult for author to truly grasp the human experience and put it on the page, but Fournet does something with these characters that I haven't seen or experienced in such a long time. I really was drawn to this relationship -- from page one to the end. I was frustrated when they were, I was sad when they were, I was happy when they were. It was such an emotionally contagious read that, at times, I couldn't tell if I was feeling something or if these characters were projecting onto me. I loved it!

Everything about this book was even paced. It didn't feel rushed and it didn't feel too much. The balance was pretty much there from start to finish. This book does tackle some serious emotional issues -- eating disorders, depression, grief -- and they are all handled in a way that surprisingly isn't as obvious as one would assume. That's not a big deal, though. I liked that Corinne's instability didn't drive the story's progression. It was part of it, but not the focus.

Overall, I was immensely pleased with this read. And I am SO glad I now have Stephanie Fournet on my radar.

P.S. My favorite part? The two final scenes of the book. For spoiler protection, I won't say what they are but.... *swooooooon*

I loved everything about this book. The characters, the plot, the setting....Corinne Granger is a portrait artist who has lost the love of her life, Michael Roush. She is in a deep depression and is intent on sleeping her life away to escape the hurt in her heart.

Wes Clarkson was Michael's closest and best friend. Michael was hit by a drunk driver and he knew he wasn't going to make it. On his death bed Michael asked Wes to take care of Corinne. Wes initially refused as he said that she hated him. But Michael wouldn't take no for an answer. Finally Wes agreed that he would take care of Corinne if he wasn't around. This was hard for him as he was grieving also.

Things got really bad for Corinne after Michael's death. Wes kept telling himself he had to do something....he had promised Michael...but it seemed all he was able to do was infuriate Corinne.

That is all I am going to say as I don't want to give anything away. You have to pick up this book. It was intense and heart breaking at times and a great story about loving and second chances. Be sure to keep the tissues nearby.

If this book is any indication Stephanie Fournet is going to have a long life as an author ahead of her. This book is really ten stars!

I needed something mild and while incredibly sad, it was a sweet little book. I think this will be my new go to author when I need something to reset my brain after too many marauders and murders.

P.S. A big thanks to my GR friend Malene for bringing this author to my attention.

Legacy is a beautifully written story of love, loss, grief, and second chances. It’s about giving yourself permission to live and love again. It is brimming with emotion right from the first page and made me feel as though I was experiencing everything right along with the characters.

Corinne Granger is merely existing. Her life has been at a standstill since the death of her boyfriend, Michael. She spends her time crying and sleeping, just trying to get through her days under the weight of her all-consuming grief. She doesn’t care if she eats, keeps herself or her house clean, and she doesn’t want to hold a paintbrush. Her pain and heartache is palpable. The author described her anguish in such a vivid way that I could feel the lump in my throat and the pain in my own chest.

Wes mourns the loss of his best friend every day. Michael and his parents were always more like family to him than his own parents. Wes made a promise to his dying friend that he would help Corinne and watch over her - a feat that was easier said than done. They only tolerated each other for Michael’s sake. With Michael gone, Wes wasn’t sure how he was going to be able to infiltrate into Corinne’s life and be the support that Michael wanted him to be.

Stephanie Fournet has created characters that are realistic and relatable. They are flawed, they make mistakes – they are normal. I felt for them, I became invested in them, I wanted them to find happiness and peace. I enjoyed seeing their relationship evolve from simply honoring a dying man’s wish to them actually caring about one another. Their friendship, their bond, and their feelings developed into something beautiful that they both ended up needing. They had both been guilty of misjudging the other, and they were finally able to see all of the qualities that Michael had been able to see in each of them.

Although this is only her second novel, Stephanie Fournet is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. She writes effortlessly, pulling the reader into the story with her eloquent prose. Legacy is an emotional love story that not only tugged at my heartstrings, but gave me all of the elements and feels that I look for when reading a book. I will definitely be looking forward to reading more books by this talented author in the future.

While I don't wish to rate my own books, I'd like to thank all of my Fall Semester fans for their eager anticipation of this second novel. You just have a few more days to wait! While Legacy is not a sequel or part of a series with Fall Semester, it is set in the Saint Streets, so look for a cameo of Malcolm and Maren!

My daily prayer is that every reader who would enjoy my books finds my books, so I hope that you enjoy this one. I love reading reviews and hearing from fans, so feel free to share your thoughts. In the meantime, I'm busy writing novel number three!

Happy reading!

A wonderful love story.

I enjoyed every moment of this story. As with Fournet's first book, it filled me with tears, laughter, hope, and love. It is a truly enjoyable read!

I absolutely loved this book- I stayed up all night to read it and then immediately flipped back to the beginning of the book to re-read it (and as a librarian who has a list of "Books I Need to Read" that is impossibly long, it's unusual for me to read a book over again right after I finish it.) But this book was just immersive and I loved being sucked into the story.

The two main characters- Wes & Corinne- are flawed and totally relatable. After the death of his best friend Michael, Wes is charged with taking care of Corinne, the girlfriend Michael left behind. At the start of the book, Wes takes on this task grudgingly, and Corinne, shattered by her grief, shuts him down at nearly every turn. Seeing their relationship change over the course of the book from something so adversarial to something very intimate and sweet was really interesting. The change in characters felt genuine and they are both characters you root for all the way through the book.

I also have to say I normally don't like romance books. In fact, I have often said something like, "I tried to read that, but it's a romance book," in a pretty derogatory tone. Romance has never been my genre of choice . But both of Stephanie Fournet's books had me hooked. She doesn't just write easy, steamy romance books; her books have substance. She writes books that speak to why relationships are so painful and scary, and yet so beautiful and worth fighting for. I've so deeply related to the characters in situations in both her books (Legacy and Fall Semester) that sometimes I wonder if she's been spying on me in my own relationships! This book is about real relationships, not just the "romance" part of a relationship. Fournet unflinchingly writes about the pain, tears, and anger that come up in a relationship, as well as the intimacy, sacrifice, and love.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, and I'd encourage people who don't think a book about a romance between two unlikely people can speak to them to try reading it- you will definitely be surprised by how much Fournet's books move you!

So this book broke my heart. I spent most of the first half in tears.

But it's so fucking beautiful. It's a romance that's not just about romance. It's not even about sex. It's about caring, and grief, and healing, and love, and it's... It's a fucking work of art. And I loved it.

I won this book through Goodreads Giveaways. I truly enjoyed it from the first page to the last page. This story felt like something that all readers could relate too. Love, loss, and finding love again is what happens to main character Corinne. She goes through a tragic loss of her boyfriend only to have to find her way back out into the real world. Best friend Wes to Corinne's dead boyfriend doesn't really like Corinne but he promised his best friend on his death bed he would look out for her. Can he help Corinne or is she going to push him away?

So powerful!

I am so glad I stumbled across this author and her works. She has such a gift for writing and telling a story that just grabs the reader from the first chapter. At least that's how I felt with each book of hers that I have devoured from front to back. This one was no exception. At some points felt like I was experiencing Corrine's feelings and emotions with her. I felt this book was so well written from both POV's.

I truly was very impressed with this book. In places while extremely sad made you in turn ache for and cheer on the young characters. It also screams for a sequel and other books about some of the other characters stories. I think we will be hearing more from mrs Fournet in the future and I hope she gets the recognition she richly deserves

Stephanie really knows how to draw you in. This book was fabulous. She developed the characters so well that you felt like you actually knew them. At first I wasn't a fan of Wes, but was rooting for him in the end, but wasn't sure they would make it. I laughed, cried, and definitely related to the characters. Would and have recommended the book to my friends. Congrats Steph!!!!

It's a very good book.
I'm usually not a fan of 'finding second love-of-their-lives after a great loss' plots (especially the ones where dead loved ones visit them in dreams), but I understand why they have to exist.
My only complaint is that is seemed a bit 'shallow (as in 'not deep'), as in only skimming over some parts and issues, briefly touching and quickly moving away, and it constantly felt that 'there could have been more here'.
This book made me tear up on multiple occasions, but things like 'I didn't think you saw me.' got me more.

Also, I might have accidentally skipped it, but the situation with Corinne's family and her 'temper' wasn't really explained at all. In the beginning of the book she constantly explodes, and is extremely and abnormally rude, aggressive, and bitchy, and I don't believe it's at the level that can be explained by 'she is grieving'. Especially since it is mentioned numerous time that she was like that before. It is also mentioned that 'she's been through a lot' (before the events of the book), but no explanation is given for that, rather than maybe death of her mother, which also doesn't really explain why she is an aggressive judgemental person who blows up in people's faces, insults them behind her backs, and generally acts like in a way that can only be explained by some sort of mental/behavioral issues. Which, again, are neither mentioned nor addressed, unless I completely missed it.
She 'changes' too abruptly, imho, for the level of bitchiness and disregard for other human beings that she was displaying in the beginning of the book.

I found this author from a recommendation on Mariana Zapata's Facebook group.

I have no idea why this author doesn't seem to be very well known, but this book was Excellent!

Here are all the things I loved about this book.
1. It's a slow burn romance. The characters actually have a relationship that develops in between the pages, and there is no insta love or insta lust.
2. The writing is really good, well above average and it's also well-edited.
3. The characters are three dimensional and nuanced. They have outside relationships with other characters that are interesting and integral to the story. (Hallajeuah... No cliche characters!)
4. The conflict and problem between the two main characters was real and heartbreaking. Emotionally, this book will suck you in. (I felt the pain of Corinne....I really just wanted to give the girl a hug.)
5. It was an emotional roller coaster book. (I love when an author can make you angry, can make you cry, and then have you laughing out loud.)
6. The ending. I love a satisfying ending.

Now, I can't wait to read other books in this author's backlist. (I feel like a kid at Christmas, excitedly squealing "OMG, I found a new author, and she's really, really good!")

The relationship development between the H and h was excellent in this book. Very swoon worthy!!! Unfortunately the drama that developed towards the end was not believable and too dragged out. The H’s parents were also way too cliche and didn’t really add much to the overall story, the story would’ve been better if they’d been left out completely.. The surprise scene at the ceremony at the end was a bit silly too - don’t get me wrong - it was a great surprise for the H, but the timing was just too OTT. Overall it was a really good romance but it could’ve been excellent with a little more tweaking.

Loved this book... Heart breaking yet inspiring... Corrine and Wes have just lost a loved one... Micheal was Corrine's boyfriend and Wes's best friend... Before this tradegy they barely tolerated each other, after this tradegy they needed each other more than they realized... Watching them help and rebuild each other was touching... Corrine and Wes falling in love felt fresh and flowed nicely... I was curious to see how it'd work out, and am happy with how it all played out...

I thought the epilogue was great, just wish we were given more...

3.5 (Just for my personal use in the future)

Not an original idea at all means, full of cliches but it is well told, and overall a good book, but it was to repetitive when talking about feelings and at the end (Corinne with the signs at the race) felt so out of character that I just wasn't excited.
