When the world falls apart, the characters hold on. To each other, to hope, and usually to a very good dog.
K.A. Jarvis writes survival stories with women at the center. Flawed, ordinary women who don't have all the answers but figure it out anyway. These books blend edge-of-your-seat tension with warmth, found family bonds, and the quiet stubborn refusal to give up.
If you like your survival fiction with heart, where the relationships matter as much as the danger, pull up a chair.

I really enjoyed this book. I had not read the first two in the collection, but did not notice the lack at all, a very independent read. I enjoy the apocalyptic books, especially how different people handle the world-ending-as-they-knew-it situations. Cavern Sanctuary puts a different spin on it as a group of unlikely people form a family in a natural limestone cavern that protects them from the initial deadly affects of nuclear fallout.
Alex and her 3 children and 2 dogs move to a small campground in Florida in an old RV after the death of her husband due to the husband’s mother basically taking everything of her son’s, including their residence. At the campground Alex befriends the people who live there also and they all wind up forming a “family.” The campground owner and her adult child-like son, a mother with 3 young children, an elderly Swedish couple and a grumpy retired vet.
The group is warned of an imminent nuclear attack and given survival instructions that include a nearby cave system for shelter from the campground owner’s son who is high up in the military leadership in Washington DC. The story follows their struggles with post nuclear living and while looking for others to share their lives with they discover a town that seems well organized and safe from the outside, but on the inside it is a harsh dictatorship.
My only complaints about the book are: 1) overly descriptive and adjective using, tho on the plus side of that the author gets you to feel their emotional states very deeply. I admit to skimming a bit towards the end of the book, which leads to 2) repeated use of some minor phrases - that got kind of annoying after the 3rd or so use, even tho it was appropriately used and described the situation really well.
The story moves along at a good pace and keeps you turning the pages.
This was a solid 4.5 stars. I have had the pleasure of reading a few books by this author and I am blown away with the writing. This author knows how to capture all of the emotions and feels. I always have a hard time putting the books down. This story is about survival, found family, sacrifice and catastrophic events. It had me crying and heartbroken at times. It had me cheering on the FMC, Alex, who is a nurse and mother trying to help her family and others during this nuclear fallout. Alex, had recently lost her husband. All the while dealing with her grief and her children’s grief, they needed to pick up the pieces and to get away. She decided to take them to a campground and escape the everyday and never understanding what horrific events would soon play out. She would soon meet some amazing people who would change her and her children’s lives. Her motherly instincts will kick in and nursing skills will play an important role in many people survival! This story is so real and heartfelt. I highly recommend it. Sometimes we never know what we will do or how we will react when you have no choice or your back is against the wall.
Oh my god this was amazing!! I was quite worried about reading it at first ad I usually strictly read Romantasy books but WOW was I shocked by this book! I cried, I laughed, I got annoyed and upset, I worried and I felt relieved! It was genuinely such a great book and even though I’ve been in a slump I’d say I’ve read it decently quick. It’s definitely an amazing book and I’ve told my friends that when it’s released they HAVE to read it!! It’s just so good and so well written. The portrayal of grief is amazing, and all the themes in this book are so well written out. The second to last chapter had me bawling it was just amazing! I’m so happy with this entire book I would 100% recommend I don’t even have any faults from this book! It was overall 5/5 stars down to the plot, character building etc etc. I just can’t get over how good this was!! I love this so much and I hope others who get to read it will love it just as much as I did/do!! Thank you so much for letting this be my first EVER ARC read it was such a cool experience and I’m so glad this was my first one! Thank you so much!! Again I just can’t express how good this was!!
this is the second book I read from this author and I must say this one was my favourite, Alex our main character she is coming from a brutal loss, her companion and father of her children, had just passed from cancer, and her mother in law that is a terrible person, made Alex and her 3 children homeless, and lets be honest, even stole a guitar, because she could... But in this case, that was kind of a blessing in disguise, because this brought Alex to Lisa, and that is for me to know and for you to find out...
Alex seems like a week and meek person, but for her children and her found family, she will go far and beyond of who she thinks she is... in the end we get a well rounded book with a satisfying ending.
This book is perfect for fans of stories that touch you inside, with found family, a mother that will protect her children, and hope for a future that seems bleak, but will live day after day until it comes true.
I've got a free ARC from StoryOrigin, and this is my honest opinion.
A modern end-of-the-world survival story which as I started to read it, I was interested to compare to 'Alas, Babylon' and 'Earth Abides' among other stories. I felt empathy with the POV character, Alex, and found the initial developments and premise for survival very satisfying, and the chapters compelling to read. I enjoyed the characters, the scenes were vivid and the relationships were interesting. I was interested to see how they could go on to survive such a situation. Later some of Alex’s choices as a parent were difficult for me to accept. Later on, I also found Alex’s character development and ability to lead seemed a great contrast to how she was initially depicted. I was not convinced by some of the later actions or solutions but found it enjoyable and my overall rating is four stars.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. I found some of the activities in the town a little unbelievable, and the fact that a character's son made it to them, and I'm not sure that the folks in the cave would have gone that long without being discovered, but I liked the characters and would read another story with those characters. The idea of prepping in a cavern system is pretty interesting, and I wonder if it really would be safer in an attack like the one in the book. I'm following the author bc she writes strong female characters, and that is really key to me in post-apocalyptic stories, that women don't act as a foil for the men.

A grieving widow is evicted and then the world falls apart with a nuclear war. A believable story (I was a Cold War Vulcan nuclear bomber pilot, so it rings true). At an all time low, she rises to various challenges. Fairly well written. However, the mention of her dead husband’s watch every third page is well over the top for me. Yes, I understand the symbolism but it started to cause eye-rolls after the 100th time. This is a standalone book, you do not need to read the first two books in the series. Recommended: Yes.

I love K A Jarvis! What a fantastic writer. This is the second book I have enjoyed by this author. I do think the author really understands what readers want when it comes to distopian fiction. I was on the edge of my seat, and desperate to see what was coming around the corner.
I love the feeling of extended family portrayed, and the desperation people would face in that situation. I couldn’t help reflecting on how I would respond.
5 star read in my opinion, it held my interest until the very last word.
Alex has lost her beloved husband and her mother in law has evicted her from her home. So with her three children, two dogs and a camper they are living. When the unbelievable happens and she must fight for everything she loves. I was so into this it felt like I was right in the middle. I couldn't stop reading and I didn't want to. It's a utterly brilliant survivalist story brimming with action.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Cavern Sanctuary: After the Fallout by K A Jarvis. I thought that the author did a wonderful job telling the story from right after Alex's husband's death to The End! I did not think that the story was rushed nor did it drag. I believed that the characters were interesting and well written. The author tapped into the World unrest and what could happen. Don't miss this book! I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
The first chapter hits like a gut punch, absolutely devastating and we haven’t even got to the cave yet. The writing is absolutely beautiful, I can’t imagine being Lisa’s son James and having to do this to protect his mom and know what’s coming.
I absolutely love Alex, I find her so relatable. She has terrible anxiety, but when the after of her children come into play she will protect them at all costs.

4.5. Wow - This book was a terrifying and emotional story of survival during an apocalyptic event and the difficult road to rebuild. It is a story of a woman who found her strength in the midst of several devastating events that are so overwhelming. It is an enjoyable read that grabs you at the beginning and does not let go until the very last page.
As I've said before, I really like post-apocalyptic stories. The characters in this one felt very real but the plot line felt like it might be light on research. I don't know. I don't research the results of nuclear fall-out. This one ends with a good deal more hope than many of the other stories I have read.

I really enjoyed this. The characters were interesting. They drew you into the story. It made me think about my home state (Florida) in a different way. I had never considered all of the military we have here that might make us a target. It was a good read with no off-color language or sex. I will look up more of the author's works.
I did really enjoy this end of the world adventure! I like the main female character, it has interesting ideas & it is well written. I felt at moments that the energy slowed a little in the last quarter of the book. Overall a really good read! I do recommend.
