You know when you pick up a debut thinking “this could go either way”… and then it quietly pulls you in and doesn’t let go?
Yeah. That was this.
This is a really solid debut. The world-building is rich without being overwhelming, and the whole science vs old magic tension runs underneath everything in a way that keeps the stakes feeling real.
The pacing? Genuinely one of the highlights. Every chapter gives you just enough that you need to keep going.
Another highlight for me is that the focus is more on adventure, character dynamics, and emotional stakes, and it pays off. I do love me some romance and spice, but this wasn't the driver of the story, so made me happy.
The emotional moments land, the relationships feel earned, and the whole story has this underlying weight of fate, loyalty, and consequences that keeps you invested.
Also bonus points for how polished this feels. The writing flows well, and you can tell a lot of care went into it (the artwork is stunning too 👀).
Final Thoughts: A fast-paced, immersive fantasy debut with strong characters and just enough chaos to keep you hooked.
Not quite a 5⭐ for me but a very solid 4⭐ and I’m keen to see what Ashlee Adams does next.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Ties of Fate and Chaos by Ashlee Adams completely blew me away.
This is a great debut novel that I was fortunate enough to be an Arc Reader for. The world feels rich and immersive without ever becoming overwhelming, and the stakes are woven so seamlessly into the story that I found myself thinking about it long after I put it down. Adams has a sharp instinct for pacing - every chapter reveals just enough to keep you desperate for the next one.
It was such a refreshing change of pace from my usual, more spicy reads. I typically gravitate toward steamier romances, but diving into a story that leans more into rich fantasy and adventure was a great way to mix things up. If you enjoy immersive world-building and action-packed storytelling with lighter spice, this one is definitely for you.
The emotional moments land with real impact, and the characters don’t simply move through the plot - they grapple with loyalty, destiny, and the consequences of their choices in ways that feel raw and authentic. The tension is flawless, the twists arrive at exactly the right moments, and the relationships are intricate, layered, and utterly compelling.
The artwork is visually stunning, elevating the story even further. It’s also refreshing to read a book that’s been so thoughtfully polished. The flow is seamless, the pacing feels natural, and the writing is clear and cohesive, making the entire experience immersive from start to finish. It’s evident that immense care and precision went into both the creative vision and the technical execution of the book.
If this is what Ashlee Adams delivers in her first book, I genuinely cannot wait to see what she does next. The Ties of Fate and Chaos is the kind of story that reminds you why you fell in love with fantasy in the first place.
Finished reading @thetiesoffateandchaos and I can honestly say this will be one of those books I will be thinking about again and again for a long time! Fast moving is an understatement, there were so many surprises and so much emotions I cannot even describe. Kuddos @ashadams.writingandreading , you are amazing and I cannot wait for book 2 👀
