I was thrilled to have the opportunity to read this story, as I am really pleased so far with the offerings from Beaten Track Publishing.

This lovely, haunting, and tense story kept me riveted and wormed its way into my dreams.

Anders and Daniel are parents to two adopted children, Maya and Axel, who are biological siblings from Argentina. Though they have been together for thirteen years and have a very loving relationship, the two men are like night and day in many ways. Daniel loves the comfort and convenience of urban life, while Anders is an active, adventurous nature lover. Despite Daniel’s dislike of bugs, creepy wildlife, and the eerie solitude of the forest, he agrees to a two-day camping trip with his husband and children in their home of Sweden rather than visiting a foreign country, as Daniel would have preferred. Anders is knowledgeable about the forest, its plants and inhabitants, and its mythical landscape and also wants his children to love and respect nature. His confidence in their adventure reassures Daniel.

What starts out being a peaceful exploration of their new surroundings and quality family time gradually turns into a nightmare. Daniel and Anders are uneasy about the lack of forest sounds – no leaves moving, no chirping birds, and the unsettling feeling of being watched. They keep their anxiety to themselves, not wanting to worry Axel and Maya. In spite of their vigilance, a parent’s worst nightmare comes true and Axel goes missing.

The police come to investigate, and it is obvious to Anders and Daniel that important information is being withheld from them, like details about past drowning incidents. The tension continues to build up as the two men cope with their guilt, fear, and frustration at the lack of resolution in their case. Daniel’s and Anders’ fear, emotional intensity, and desperation are palpable and made me break out into a sweat.

As the inspector in charge becomes more forthcoming about the drowning incidents, the men learn there is some truth in folklore. I loved the mystery, the tension, the creepy ending, and the very believable portrayal of a loving family that shies away from excess sentimentality.

Ofelia Gränd is a new author to me, but you can bet I’ll be on the lookout for more of her stories.

As if children weren't scary enough!

I kid..

Kinda.

I mean, sometimes kids are creepy, amiright?

#dontjudgeme.

Here we have Ofelia Grand doing what she does best, as she weaves a contemporary tale mixed with local folklore to create a story bound to leave you absorbed and chilled.

Anders is man's man; he loves the outdoors and is pretty much one with nature. He wants to give that same feeling and opportunity to his children, but his husband, Daniel is the polar opposite. If he's not sleeping in a hotel room or resort, surrounded by technology and his iPhone, then it's more like torture than a vacation.

So...the next two days spent hiking and camping in the woods, with two small children in tow, should be awesome!

Eh, not so much.

You see, there's more to these woods than anyone knows.

Sometimes, they go silent.

Sometimes, there's more to an almost forgotten folk tale than anyone could imagine.

Sometimes, you should listen to that nagging feeling that something bad is going to happen.

Ofelia Grand does MM horror really well, and even though this is one of her older stories, it's still just as creepy and atmospheric as her more recent "adventures". And sexy! Because no camping adventure is complete without a little down and dirty, right?

Suspense and folklore intertwine to create a fantastic and fast little read.

Beware the silent woods!

Editor's Review:

This is such an intriguing story. I'm not a fan of paranormal / thriller type stuff usually, but one of the things I found fascinating about Silent Woods was the way it lured me in, much like the location of the story and the supernatural forces at play there.

Daniel's husband Anders is the outdoorsy type and maybe a little bit mocking of Daniel's loathing of camping and outdoor adventures, but, as is usually the way with family life, the minority relents for the good of the many, and so the family head out for a couple of days camping in the woods.

The woods are quiet - not just in an out-of-town, at-one-with-nature kind of way - but unnaturally so. But before it all goes to hell, Daniel and Anders manage a bit of smoochy (in the usual way parents do when their kids are sleeping nearby - after all, this is primarily paranormal fiction) and even then Daniel is sensitive to the strangeness of the woods.

From there? Well son Axel goes missing and it all gets very spooky.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water... is very much something that will play on my mind after reading this.

A great short read for one of those nights when the wind howls and a distant owl hoots. You just need to start worrying when it stops.

Hooray! That was stressful!

This was my horror speed. I was aware of that going in, which is good because it would have been a completely different kind of stressful the other way.

Ofelia Gränd is such a talented writer. It is good she chose to use her powers for good, not evil. Not this time anyway. Well, maybe a little. We'll have to wait and see.

I think I have now read four books by Ofelia Grand, and this is by far my favorite.

It was not at all what I expected and, once I thought I had figured out what was going on, I was wrong. Not completely off, but off.

This one is less about surprise and shock. Less about horrific things. More about cleverly unnerving the reader, building up to a true nightmare of a tale. It reminds you of what you were scared of as a child. I think if you have children it would probably be an even more, unnerving read.

While I know it isn't all she writes, I do think of Ofelia Gränd as a horror writer, but she can still write some pretty hot sex.

***

Free story! Free story! :D

How cheap did that just make me sound?

Very?

Anyway, this is a free story available if you subscribe to the Ofelia Grand mailing list! :D I guess it is going to be a replaced with another freebie (two free stories! Even cheaper?) so, if you want it, grab it now.

My goodness, I have been meaning to write this review for aaages!!

I read it a while ago, and read it again every time I wanted to write a review. Still gives me that spooky feeling of being all alone in the eerily empty woods.

Daniel has a bad feeling about going camping, but his husband Anders and their two kids are all for it. So despite the unease he feels at heading off into the wilderness, he agrees to go with them.

Everything is okay, until his five year old son goes missing.

And there's a suspect... but how can that be? This suspect wasn't supposed to exist in anything but folklore, and yet...

And yet, what other choice do they have?

The writing and pacing is tight and controlled, and the sense of mounting urgency as Anders and Daniel search for Axel gave me a swoopy feeling in my stomach. It was like watching a particularly scary movie in the theatre. That sense of anticipation and dread...

Highly recommended!

Silent Woods is a great supernatural short by Ofelia Grand that manages a wonderful amalgamation of the everyday and the supernatural. I like the way one of the MCs attributed their uneasiness to their personal like of the outdoors - i can sympathise! - rather than anything strange, and their disbelief rather than the blind acceptance that you usually see with characters in this kind of novel.

Creepy and a little sinister at times, but with a lovely story of familial love and an excellent portrayal of the panic of losing a child, makes this a superb way to pass a little time.

Highly recommended.

Shorts are generally hard to for me to read/review however Silent Woods is something special. This is a well put together short with a hint of mystery and Scandinavian folklore which I was not expecting. The premise of the story is intriguing and the execution superb.

It's a shame when beautiful scenery on a vacation ends up being your worst nightmare.

description

This is what married couple Daniel and Anders face during a family camping trip. Daniel, (much like myself) is not into the whole nature scene and a bit of a worry wart. His husband on the other hand has a joy for nature and wants their children to share in his love for the outdoors, but the planed vacation doesn't go as envisioned.

Daniel, with his suspicious eye notices alarming things about their surrounding :
I hadn't seen any animals- not even slugs. Shouldn't there be butterflies flying around, or ant trails on the ground? I hadn't heard so much as a tweeting bird
When the family decides to take a hike, Daniel’s misgivings about the area are proved valid when their five year old son Axel disappears.

A quick search of the grounds and surrounding areas prove unsuccessful. When the police are called in secrets about the area are revealed and time is of the essence to find Axel alive. This is where the book gets good so I will not spoil anything by revealing any more. I will say I was saddened to see the change in Anders.

I love the eerie ending of Silent Woods. Reading the ending was like listening to the score in a scary movie waiting for the other shoe to drop. Ofelia Gränd did a great job of incorporating mystery, legends, and a sensual sex scene in this short story.

This mystical novella gets 5 silent into the woods stars for keeping me interested to the creepy end.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

Holy Crap! This kept me up while I waited for my heart to calm down, and so I apologize for the ramblingness of this review. I wanted to get my thoughts down before I forgot. The author's note at the beginning was absolutely wonderful, because I must say, I too, feel this way when someone mentions going out into the wilderness. And it also helped to set the mood for the story. Not certain if that gives away the book or the mystery of the tale, but I enjoyed the little glimpse into the mindset of the writer.

Regardless, this was a wonderful and scary short story. I loved it. I normally don't like first person POV but it worked well here for me. I felt all the emotions Daniel was going through. Grand sets the mood of the tale wonderfully, and though I had a small clue about the story from the author's note, I loved how she went about telling the tale.

I love folklore from other countries, and I had never heard about this particular tale. I kinda figured it was some sort of fae creature, and wasn't disappointed on hearing the Swedish version of them.

I won't go into the tale's ending, but will say that you must read it for yourself. It was chilling and haunting and made me gasp as well as wonder what would happen next. Though this is a short story, I didn't feel cheated nor did I feel anything was lacking in the tale. I just wanted more story.

Thanks, Ofelia Grand for a fantastic read.

Something a bit different. A Scandinavian mythical/paranormal novella that makes you think about your own children, if you have them. What if one of yours went missing in the woods? What if a police officer had information, and told you something that was hard to believe? A gay couple find themselves in this position when their son, Axel, goes missing while they are camping near a lake.

This was a fun novella about Daniel, his husband Anders, and their two young children on their first camping trip. Because this novella is chock full of Scandinavian lore, things go awry.

Since this is a short story it's hard to go into too much detail without spoiling anything, but it's haunting and captivating and if you have young kids you care about in your life, it's pretty frightening in places. I recommend it for reading alone on a silent, dark night.

4 star review by Dennis

Daniel has never been an out-doorsy kind of guy, even the park is too much nature for him, but his husband Anders loves everything nature. So when Anders decided to take Daniel and their two kids, 5 year old Axel and 3 year old Maja camping for a couple days, Daniel was non to excited, but to make his husband as well as their two kids happy he went along with it. As soon as they arrived Daniel couldn’t hide his nervousness and of course what kind of loving husband would Anders be if he didn’t give him a little teasing about it.

While walking the trail to where Anders had already mapped out where they were going to stay for the night, Daniel thought it was awfully quiet and already being on edge didn’t help his nerves that the woods were so quiet. Reaching the campsite and pitching the tent they got themselves ready for a long day and night ahead of them.

The next day while hiking Daniel went ahead with Maja while Anders had stayed back with Axel but when Anders finally caught up with Daniel; Axel was nowhere to be found. Daniel asked where he was and Anders said that Axel had run ahead to catch up to Daniel but Axel never got there. Anders being the calm one of the two tried not to panic and retrace his steps to see if he could find Axel, but when he returned to Daniel, Axel was still missing. Not knowing what else to do they called the police, only to find out a secret that the forest is keeping; people being drowned in a nearby lake by some known as “The Neck”. The Neck calls his victims with the beautiful music he plays on his violin. Has Axel been taken by The Neck, and if so can Daniel, Anders, and the police get to him in time to save him?

Silent Woods would make a great summer camp story to be told over a camp fire and one that would make me look out over a lake before going for a swim. Ofelia Gränd has a great suspense story that makes you laugh while at the same time keeping your mind on edge. The banter and love between Daniel and Anders is just cute and Axel and Maja are just too adorable. The way Ofelia has written what is going on makes you feel like you’re in the forest along with the four main characters. When Daniel realizes how quiet the woods should not be, you can feel the eeriness Daniel is feeling and feel how loud the silence must be.

The silence only gets worse when they discover that Axel has disappeared and the fear you know Daniel and Anders are feeling only amplifies the deafening silence. Go get Ofelia Gränd’s Silent Wood to find out if the silence ever goes away.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for honest review as part of M/M Romance Group Don't Buy My Love program.

Wow...I just finished reading this and let me start by saying - Ms Grand, you stopped my heart with that epilogue!

Now,on to the review part.

This is a paranormal short story told from Daniel's point of view. The story starts with Daniel thinking about 2-day camping trip on which his husband, Anders, convinced him to go. Daniel is not exactly the camping type..actually,he is not even the nature-loving type, but Daniel is,so - the camping trip it is. The following day they leave, together with their children - Axel, who is 5 years old,and Maja, who is 3 years old - with Daniel already anticipating going back home, and Anders looking forward to spending some time in the nature with kids. But what they find there,in the woods,is nothing like they imagined...We already know from the premise of the story that Axel will get lost. But it's more than that, for what happened to them while they were searching for Axel will change all of them in a fundamental way.

Be aware, this is not a romance book - this is paranormal short story with gay characters as protagonists. But,don't let that deter you from reading, because you will not be disappointed. It involves Scandinavian folklore, and although I expected eerie, even a little scary, this is primarily suspenseful/mysterious story with mythical elements...with the best waiting at very end.

Recommended for all lovers of paranormal...

I will definitely look at hiking differently now since I've read this book. The synopsis does a great job at summing up the story. Daniel prefers the life of modern conveniences. His husband Anders enjoys the great out-doors. Though Daniel is not too thrilled about it, he and Anders take their two young children for a weekend hike/camping trip. The kids are extremely excited, as well as Anders, but Daniel just wants to get it over with. He is paranoid of wild animals and something happening to the kids. On the second day of their hike, their son, Axel, goes missing. It's both dads' worst nightmare. The police are acting strangely and they soon learn not everything is as it seems.

The entire story is written from Daniel's POV. I really wished it changed up between Daniel and Anders. Since the story is very short, you really do not get to know much about Anders. Also, Daniel comes across as pretty insecure.

The story itself was well written. It was spooky and creepy all at the same time. The reader also gets a lesson in an unique urban legend. I do with it was longer because the legend really captured my attention and I would have liked to connect with the characters more. The epilogue was good and over all I did enjoy the story. I would definitely read more from this author.

I received this book via Goodreads' Don't Buy My Love program in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this was a nice entertaining read which packed a punch given the amount of pages(57). The two MC's, Daniel & Anders, along with their two children; decided to go camping the woods. Daniel, not really looking forward to this, does it to make Anders and the children happy. We all, at some point in our lives puts another wants first. Daniel is worried, uneasy about being in the woods at night with his children; about the unknown, the what if's: which proved all too true for Daniel's piece of mind. Their little boy, Axel, was there one minute; gone the next: a parent's worst nightmare. This short read had elements of suspense, gut churning, spookiness and the paranormal which hit all my buttons for a nice entertaining read. I liked how Daniel and Anders kept their cool and supported one another. Many times the parents set out and blame the other partner. I enjoyed Ofelia Grand's writing and would look for more from this author.

Daniel is city born and bred, he doesn't like nature or the countryside. He's very protective of their two adopted children and worries, even when they are safe in their walled garden.

His husband Anders is the nature lover and he wants the children to experience the countryside on a camping trip, like he used to do as a child. Reluctantly Daniel agrees to a camping trip of only two nights away in a nearby forest.

But Daniel is constantly worried - what do they do if they meet cows, do cows attack or bite? (This line amused me because I remember traipsing through a field in New Zealand filled with sheep, and I panicked - "They're looking at me!" Needless to say, we weren't attacked by the sheep!)

Anders tries to play down his husband's fears, as he doesn't want his nervousness to rub off on the children. They spend some time hiking and exploring, with Anders and Daniel finding some alone time once the children are asleep, a sweet love scene that shows you how much these two men love each other, more than mere words could say.

Daniel thinks the woods are odd, more so than he expected. There is no noise: no birdsong, no rustling of leaves in the wind, in fact there is no wind at all. And where are all the animals and insects? The forest feels deserted except for them.

But it's the second day when they face a parent's worse nightmare: their son Axel goes missing in the middle of the woods. And when the police come, the detective informs them there have been some unexplained drownings in a lake formed from an old quarry. Something in the lake wants Axel but Daniel and Anders won't give him up without a fight.

This was a short, but intense book, starting off very simply as a slice of family life but then the tension starts to ratchet up. You just have to keep reading.

I felt closest to Daniel, as if I had children I would be a nervous wreck and never want to let them out of my sight too, but I liked Anders too. The children are just adorable and I loved how Maja kept mispronouncing her brother's name as Askel.

We get into a bit of Swedish folklore/mythology, and I love stories with a bit of folklore, it must be my Irish genes.

Although shorter than a full-length novel, nothing feels skimped on - there is a good plot, good characterisation and a story that keeps you guessing until the very end.

The ending chilled me but I won't spoil it here. You just have to read it for yourself.

SILENT WOODS is the story of a contemporary couple who take their family camping in the Swedish forest. Their weekend getaway turns into every parent's nightmare when their son disappears. Desperate to find their child, they are blindsided when the search turns into a mystery of mythological proportions!

What I loved most about SILENT WOODS is that it is first and foremost a suspense filled mystery. Daniel and Anders are typical parents. The day to day activities of raising young children take up most of their time. The quiet moments they are able to spend as a couple are treasured just as much as time spent relaxing as a family.

Based upon Swedish folklore, the mystery has a unique spin that I have not encountered before. I enjoyed this well written and edited novella. Ofelia Gränd's work is new to me and I'm looking forward to reading more of her stories in the future.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The book covers Daniel's POV. When his husband Anders talks him into going camping for two days with their three and five year old in toll, he reluctantly agrees. Not being much of an outdoors man he has his doubts and worries about the trip.Immediately on arrive he noticed the unsettling silence and during the their hike/walk feels as if they're being watched. Anders tries to assuage his fears by reassuring him he's safe and all is well so far. When their son goes missing, Daniel realizes his fears have come true. Concerned and afraid they call for help and learn the lore associated with the lake.

The build up of tension, fear, unease and the mannerism of the characters made this a very enjoyable read. The truth about the lake was chilling and by the end of the story it had me breaking out with goosebumps and a chill running down my back.

This was a sweet story about an established gay couple (30+) going camping in contemporary Sweden. The narrator is apprehensive about nature in general but trusts in his partner. When something unexpected happens they go through it together, supporting each other. A slow build-up, action-filled climax and tongue-in-the-cheek finish/outlook make this a very “round” story.

The novella is easy to read and flows without a hitch. The mc’s and the other characters are well drawn and act reasonable despite the journey into the paranormal. The children perform adequate to the circumstance, surprising their parents – and the reader – with their resilience. I particularly liked the ending!

Recommend it for a cosy afternoon on the couch.

One thing, though: I won’t be looking at Swedish lakes the same as before…

Anders and Daniel have two exuberant kids, Axel and Maja. I am a nature lover, so I understand the pull of wanting to explore and camp. Anders and I share that love of nature.

What mystery that occurs definitely was not what I was expecting.

This short story was full of mystery and strange happenings. I really liked the tale that was told - even if I found it slightly creepy too.

I love mythology and old wives' tales, so this book was right up my alley.

I am sad at the change that Anders goes through at the end of the story, but think that if the author would have written a longer one, things might have turned around.

Overall, a quick, short read with plenty of strange occurrences.

I loved this book, but then I always love books with gay couples with children. This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it. Daniel & Anders where just a great couple but when Anders decides to take the family camping Axel comes up missing. I love the mystery and was glad this was not a super long story. This is because that longer stories just seem to have a lot of fillers in them when the story is just dealing with a certain group of characters. I would defiantly buy another book from this author.

I had ambivalent feelings about this book. At the beginning I had a lot of issues about it, I find it a little hard to keep my attention for nearly half of it but I forced myself to keep reading, which pay its effort because it get a lot better.

There were some great moments, some very angsty ones that I loved and I just couldn’t stop reading. The kids were nice. I’m not too fond on reading books with kids but it was lovely to see how the family manage the circumstances presented to them.

I did liked the paranormal element on the story but I wish I would know a bit more about it. I felt like that part of the story was a little unconcluded but still very enjoyable.

Silent Woods was short, somewhere around sixty pages, but it was deep and powerful. It was almost freakishly easy to identify with Daniel who wasn't outdoor kind of guy; in fact he was thoroughly city person who loved the security and safety that city has to offer. However, his husband Anders loves outdoors, hiking, camping, everything that centers arounds woods, forests and outdoor activity. So Anders convinced Daniel to go camping for two days with their two adopted kids, Axel and Maja, on late August when they had their vacation. Everything about woods was new to Daniel and he was nervous as he was afraid something could happen to their kids or they could run into wild animals.

Daniel was solid and well developed character - as was Anders. Gränd managed to create world that seemed perfectly realistic and a couple who loved each other and their kids. And oh my, Axel was typical five-year-old little boy who whined after long walks in the rail and Maja was adorable three-year-old girl. Their family was both adorable and easy to identify with. But then everything went wrong as Axel disappeared and no one could find them. Daniel and Anders called the police and the search party joined them but the atmosphere went dark fast, and as a reader I could feel Daniel's and Anders' panic and worry for their little boy. It's a sign of a good writer since I don't have kids of my own but I could still panic and worry alongside Daniel and Anders - and hope that everything turns out to be okay.

Silent Woods started out like a good contemporary story that was eventually mixed with mysteries and sinister lying in the Swedish woods. Gränd made me cry for joy and for anxiety, and it was wonderful. The story was captivating from the first sentence to the very last, and it left me wondering so many things. It was short but felt like a long rollercoaster of feelings, and because of that I'd say it was perfect as it was. I highly recommend Silent Woods to anyone! I myself couldn't help but devour it.

[Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.]

Anders has convinced his husband David to take their two children on a camping trip in the woods. David isn't exactly excited about it, but it sounds like fun for the kids, so he's happy to go along with it. But once they get out there, things seem a bit off for reasons he can't quite figure out. And when their five-year-old son, Axel, disappears near the water, they find themselves facing a creature of legend much scarier than they could have imagined.

I've marked this in the m/m romance genre since that's sort of where it fits, though the focus of the plot is more of a paranormal, modern fantasy story. Anders and David's relationship is certainly a major part of things, but what happens with Axel is sort of the crux. The set up moves a bit slowly--though it does provide for some healthy exposition--but once it gets to the point where Axel wanders off on his own, things move quickly and there's a good sense of urgency to most of the rest of the story.

Definitely one I would say is worth a read if the elements of the story are ones you personally enjoy. I will say I look forward to picking up more from this author.

Those 🏞woods will get you every time!🎻😳

Recommended for suspense and horror lovers who favor a touch of fantasy in their reading.

A short family campout in the Swedish woods turns horrifying! I loved the contrast of calm domesticity
and a little outdoor heat turning to unease and then full dread and panic as the innocuous trip into the woods with their young children gets totally creepy and then terrifying for Anders and Daniel.

It's a great short novella, easy to read start to finish. I love Ofelia Grand's MM romances, but her stories with an atmosphere of supernatural and macabre, like this one, are also on my list of must reads. I missed Silent Woods the first time around before I had heard of the author's works and I'm glad it's been reissued.

There is no place like the city. I have to admit that after reading this story I was convinced that my never needing to camp is wise. In this story Daniel has no interest to go camping with his husband Anders and their two children. He is uneasy from the introduction of the idea, to the preparation and the hike to the place where they will camp made him feel uneasy. As the story progresses it the case that something wicked and creepy was waiting for them in the woods and thanks goodness that they all make it out of the woods physically alright. But they endure a creepy experience as their son disappears and it becomes obvious that there were things going on that did not mean them well. This story was brief, well told and left me feeling creeped out!

Silent Woods is a bit terrifying. It starts out nice and sweet as a family of four heads out into the forest for a camping trip. Told in the POV of Daniel, one of the Dads, this story is emotional and brings to life a legend that seems impossible to believe. When Axel, Daniel and Anders' five year old son, goes missing the family pulls together to find him and discovers an urban legend that might actually be real. The ending really only asks more questions about what really happened to Axel and why his playing has such an affect on his little sister. This is an amazing short story and this author continues to be one of my favorites.

Anders and Daniel are the complete opposite but opposites attract and these two are perfect for each other when Anders decides to take Daniel and the two adoptive children on a camping trip it starts off so well but then the Nightmare starts when Axel goes is missing.
This was a bit different to any other books I’ve read by Ofelia grand and at times it took me awhile to get into, But as soon as the story real took off it’s sort of like group to you you didn’t wanna put it down. I found the the book cover very haunting. I can’t wait for the next book

Holy goosebumps! Amazingly well done retelling of the Swedish folktales about the Näcken. I liked that Anders and Daniel are a long-established couple. They obviously love each other and their children deeply. When their son disappears they freak out as expected but they also draw together. The ending is going to take me a bit to process because the creep factor is way up there.

This is a short ,fast paced MM suspense with strong characters and an interesting story line. The author does a great job building the tension and panic the parents feel as they search for their son in the woods. She brings a touch of the supernatural in realistic fashion with her vividly painted scenes and delivers a terrific read. Loved it !!
