Kill it with Fire
The remote Scottish islands of St Kilda were evacuated over a century ago. And for good reason.
Bruce hates the cold, he hates being away from the city, and, most of all, he hates spiders. But, drawn by the promise of rich gas reserves, he leads a team of corporate surveyors to these lonely shores. The discovery of a dead body, an infestation of strange arachnids, and a seemingly abandoned military base raise worrying questions.
In this desolate isolation, a monstrous presence looms as the team uncover the dark truth behind the islands' evacuation.

With horror and spooky reads already on the brain having my Summerween tbr sorted, I was so happy to slot this read into my list too.
I was instantly drawn to the front cover - I love an isolated island setting for thriller and horror reads and was intrigued by the title - I had to know what needed killing...and why!?
Now, I've read this author before, but a number of years ago and something quite different in content, so I kind of went into this blind - my favourite way!
The creepy, insular atmosphere of the setting was apparent right from the off. It was clear that the island had been abandoned and for a reason, so this set me on edge from then on, just waiting to find out what or why?
As Bruce and the team head out to check on the gas reserves rich there, I knew that I really wasn't going to care much about these characters.
That may sound harsh, but Bruce was driven purely by money and with an attitude that actually made me angry.
Don't be put off by this though, because this was certainly the whole point.
This left me in two minds when it came to the exciting parts as I was half screaming "quick escape" ...and half screaming "oh my gosh, just get him!" - yep, I'm a little unhinged when it comes to my horror!
I loved the writing style which had me hooked from start to finish and given this was only a fairly short book, I devoured it in one day - I just couldn't put it down.
This author has a knack for creating a wonderful atmosphere and including great description, so this had my heart racing.
Just in warning though, if you do have a real fear of spiders, maybe sit this one out!
It's scarily realistic feeling!
Another great read from this author and I must add more soon.

I was sent a copy of this book for review.
Bruce has been tasked with exploring a remote, abandoned Scottish island called St Kilda as it potentially has large amounts of gas deep within its caves. The possibility of this new resource and the money it might generate is one thing, but he hates the cold, being in remote places and has an intense fear of spiders which is problematic when he gets trapped on the island which is infested with a strange and rather large unknown species of spider.
To make matters worse a dead body is found, and the remains of a military base is discovered with no sign of its former inhabitants. Bruce worries for his and his team’s safety when their only way off the island is unusable and the dangers to their lives are growing by the day. After hearing the stories from locals as to why the island was originally abandoned many years ago, Bruce starts to wonder if a darker presence is behind the death and misfortune they are experiencing.
Will Bruce and his team make it of the island before it’s too late or will they too succumb to the mysterious threat that surrounds them?
I should have read the blurb on this book in more detail as I have a strong fear of spiders both in person and in literature, so this story unnerved me more than most thrillers do because I hadn’t prepared myself for the arachnid part of the book. However, I think this added to the fear factor for me which only made the story and the characters’ reactions to the spidery threats more believable for me. Personally, I would have taken my chances swimming in the stormy sea to escape lol. The narrator also captured these elements very well in the character portrayal and narrative sections with added depth and suspense to the story.
I thought the mix of old myths and legends, a mysterious creature attacker and the life or death/time running out/can’t escape setting of the story brought the plot to life and made it feel more real and immersive. The ending for me was a little rushed so it felt abrupt but overall, I think this was an interesting and thrilling story.

Thank you LBTCrew and Lindsey Kinsella for allowing me to be a part of the tour for Kill it with Fire #ad #freebook
I started reading this been and I was hooked, you had everything characters perfectly written, especially the MC, beautifully descriptive scenery and all the mysterious suspense you could want.
The only issue I had was I started reading it before bed and it was so well written I had to stop as I was getting terrified, as I'm scared of spiders 😂.
This needs to be on suspense fans TBRs immediately, just don't read it in the dark or before bed if you are scared of spiders.

Bloomin brilliant. I really loved this book.
From the quick, snappy chapters to the terrifying island, I was hooked!
I loved Bruce. I know he is possibly more of an acquired taste but he was funny, honest and quirky. I don’t mind spiders, to a degree, but I’m pretty sure I would have reacted the same way Bruce did!
The setting, the atmosphere and the writing is brilliant. It has perfectly described scenes that built the tension, had my mind wandering what terrors lie beneath the surface and gave me creeps. I shivered several times just at the thought of the evil, mutant spiders!
Oh, how could I forget, I love the Scottish language. I couldn’t help but read it with a Scottish accent. (Thank you for explaining some of the words. Although I have Scottish friends, some I’ve never heard before).🏴
And that ending was perfect! I won’t say more but very cool and clever. *chefs kiss*
A quick, fun, creepy read perfect for summerween, Halloween or any day of the week! 🥰🕷️

This was a super fast read which I think was very fitting for this kind of mysterious horror novel. The author gives us exactly enough information to keep us hooked but has us intrigued (and creeped out) enough to keep reading. At only 3 hours and 26 minutes (227 pages) this is perfect to read in one sitting!
The story is set on the island of St Kilda in Scotland which was so incredibly well described that I could really picture the isolated setting. I love that the audiobook was narrated by Colin Marshall who is a Scottish narrator as it meant I felt totally immersed in the book right from the start. It’s details like that which really elevate an audiobook!
The way that Kinsella built the scenes and portrayed the location gave the whole story a very atmospheric feel that elevated the creepy and sinister vibe of the story. The descriptions and details that he focused on throughout made for many deeply uncomfortable and unsettling moments. I’m not a lover of creepy crawlies at the best of times but this story had me rather on edge about them. The mystery is so cleverly wound through the plot that I was constantly guessing ( wrongly, obviously) at what was going to happen next and just couldn’t stop reading.
There’s a rather varied cast of characters with Bruce and his team as well as the creatures and previous residents too. Bruce is rather unlikable and made me quite angry at times. However, the supporting characters were very interesting and added a level of fun to the story. The banter and growing relationships between them was the perfect comedic relief for what is ultimately an extremely unsettling story. I really enjoyed the dynamic of the team and their rather strange interactions on the island.
One of my favourite elements was the reports and information left behind on the island as it was such a great way to deepen the mystery and add tension too. I felt like it really added an extra level of insight that gave us the ideas and clues we needed to piece together what was unfurling and elevated the mystery to make us feel involved.
I’d definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a short and fast-paced horror read!
AD - I was sent a copy of this audiobook for free in exchange for my review, but all my opinions are honest and true.

There is money to be made on St. Kilda islands when huge deposits of natural gas are discovered there. Unfortunately, there are also monsters there.
Bruce works for O’Shea Oil and Gas company and is sent to St. Kilda to find out the feasibility of extracting the natural gas and discovering its source. He is accompanied by Lewis, his colleague, Emma, the company’s environmental scientist and Kathy, a UNESCO worker. Before going to the island, Bruce stops off at Mrs. Gillies’ home to persuade her to move back to the island or at least visit it. Apparently, the island has been uninhabited for some time, but Mrs. Gillies’ family used to live there. Bruce tells her that his company will establish infrastructure so that people will be able to inhabit the island again. She refuses and cryptically warns him not to go to the island without giving a reason.
Once on the island, Bruce has trouble finding the source of the gas but has no problem finding spiders, which he hates. These spiders are abnormally large, to add insult to injury. A dead body from a prior expedition turns up and mysterious creatures start to make an appearance and the crew gets spooked and decide to abandon the mission and leave the island. One of the crew members disappears and things just go downhill from there, but I can’t say much more without giving away the plot. Suffice it to say that ecological balance is a major factor.
What makes this a truly great story is that even though it seems like another straightforward monster story, it is not. Much like the “Jaws” tagline, “Just when you thought it was safe to…”

A little profit goes a long way.
This was an excellent example of how to write a rather unlikable but still fascinating character. There were times when Bruce irritated me so much that I wished he were a real person so I could give him a piece of my mind due to how greedy he was and how much he allowed his phobia to control his behavior. His flaws were deeply ingrained into his personality, and yet somehow they also made me want to learn more about him due to how memorably he displayed them.
I adored the use of foreshadowing in this book, especially when it came to Bruce’s weak spots. It struck the perfect balance between hinting at what was to come and trusting the audience to put the pieces together correctly with a little time and effort. This is not at all an easy thing to accomplish, but it’s quite satisfying when it does happen because of how exciting it is to look back at those moments and realize their true significance to both the plot and the protagonists.
The final scene was what catapulted this to a five-star read for me. There were times earlier on in the storyline when I had questions about where the author was going with his characters or why he wrote certain moments the way that he did given that this was firmly rooted in the horror genre. Experiencing the big reveal not only answered those questions but coalesced all of them into something that made me wish this tale was twice as long so I could find out what happened to the characters next. Kudos to Mr. Kinsella for writing such a captivating piece! If he ever writes a sequel, I’d sure love to review it.
Kill It with Fire was deliciously scary.

this one a try, and I’m glad I did!
At just over 3 hours, this is a pretty short listen, but it still manages to pack in plenty. Set on an isolated, abandoned island, it has a creepy atmosphere from the off, and the tension builds really well as the story progresses.
🕷️ If you don’t like spiders, you might want to give this one a miss! But if you want a scare then you can either listen to or read then this book is for you as there are some genuinely creepy moments, and I really enjoyed this suspenseful horror. The ending also surprised me, which is always a bonus.
🎙️ Narration: Colin Marshall did a good job. His narration was clear and precise, and I really liked his Scottish accent, which even made me laugh at times. My only criticism was that he could sometimes sound a little too polished and calm during the scarier, more panicked sections. I wanted him to ramp it up a bit and really push the tension.
Overall, a creepy, atmospheric and easy audiobook to get through. If you’re a fan of suspenseful horror and creepy crawlies, this would be right up your street!

I was kindly sent a free copy of this book as part of a book tour in exchange for an honest review. This was a relatively short, sharp horror read but it got me hooked right away. The setting is perfect and felt really believable - the way it was described was so immersive and it gave me the chills. I didn’t really warm to the characters that much but I think they are deliberately written to make them unlikeable - most of them certainly came across as pretty selfish or conceited. I wasn’t a massive fan of the breaks to give scientific insights into things as it jolted me out of the story for a bit, although they were actually quite fascinating on their own. There were also a few formatting issues in the print edition I found a bit frustrating but they didn’t detract too much from the story itself. I did get fully sucked into the web of the narrative and flew through the book in a day. I will certainly be reading more by this author. 4 stars.

Set on a remote Scottish island, this thriller makes brilliant use of its isolated setting to create an atmosphere that is both claustrophobic and unsettling. The harsh landscape and a feeling of being cut off from the outside world adds a constant layer of tension through the entire story 🫣
The Scottish dialect is another real strength, giving the characters an authentic voice and making the setting feel vivid and believable without ever becoming difficult to follow 😍
The suspense builds steadily, with plenty of secrets, suspicion, and moments that leave you questioning who can really be trusted. The sense of unease grows with every chapter, and the pacing keeps the pages turning as new revelations come to light 🤗
What really elevated the book was its twist 🤯 It is genuinely surprising, cleverly woven into the story, and one of those reveals that makes you look back and appreciate how carefully everything was put together 👌🏻

This book reminded me of The Thing. I enjoyed the creepy abandoned island, people disappearing one by one and terrifying monsters.
The author created a tense atmosphere, that will have you on edge the whole time wondering who is going to be next. I loved the suspense, trying to figure out what was going on and then finally finding out the history of the island.
I loved the twist at the end, I swore and proper laughed out loud. It was brilliant and I didn’t see it coming.
I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook and it was only a short book at 3.5 hours, so easy to squeeze in if you don’t have a lot of time or don’t enjoy long books. Listening to the accents of the characters really makes me feel more immersed in the story and the narrator did a great job.
Overall, I rate this 4⭐️

Kill it with fire 🔥- what a book! to say this book has only 217 pages it really packs a punch! When i hit page 86 i was literally hooked. The first 10 pages i would say you are getting to know the characters and where they get stranded but the second half it was non stop action! I've never read anything quite like it, i was terrified of the giant spiders 🕷️ and this book totally emerged me in that i even jumped at the scary parts. it was utterly brilliant and well written i adored Missus Gillies she was so wise, and Bruce was a great character with his arachnophobia. I was not expecting the ended and overall i didn't actually see anything that was going to happen, i think that's what made it so jumpy is that nothing was predictable.

I am absolutely petrified of spiders, which made this book an odd choice for me. But whilst there were some sections that made me slightly queasy, I actually really enjoyed it and am almost convinced that spiders are better than the alternative!
I really enjoyed that the actual story was interspersed with factual information, even when that information was that there are spiders that are as heavy as hamsters. Eek!
The storyline itself was really great, I found the book was a really quick read which actually suited the mystery element of this story perfectly. For me personally, the spiders were spine tingling levels of horror, but not enough to make me stop reading, which I have been known to do with spider books before. My son has one that I can't even pick up!

I was so lucky to have received an audiobook copy of this book from the author and LoveBookTours and I was immediately interested in the horror aspect as we come into the spooky Autumn/fall season. I have a fear of spiders so it didn’t fail to scare me! This is a quick book full of suspense, excitement and action and I enjoyed it.
I was completely engaged and with this being on audio, it felt full of movie type energy. I finished this book within a day. Some of the characters made questionable choices, also much like in some movies! I would recommend it if you want a quick action packed read and would read more from this author.

Scotland is one of my favourite places to visit, after many wonderful summer holidays over the years, so reading this brought back lots of great memories. Couple that with a deeply atmospheric horror mystery ( one of my favourite genres ), and this really was right up my street.
With a wonderfully crafted and varied cast of characters, each and every one I found to believe and to feel real, and a storyline packed to the brim with great twists and turns, I flew through this in two sittings.
I absolutely loved the isolated island setting, just great for this type of read.
A big 5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

This audiobook was a quick listen and it hooked you in from the beginning! The smooth tones of Colin Marshall make for an eerie and spooky atmosphere. The facts smattered into the story about the spiders and mannerisms etc really interested me and I felt it added a lot to the story as it went along…as the fiends aren’t what you think they are! The twist at the end blew my mind revealing what the fiends really were! Great quick eerie listen!

Kill it with Fire by Lindsey Kinsella presents a bold and attention-grabbing concept that immediately sparks curiosity.
Even with limited reviews, the title alone suggests intensity and urgency, hinting at a story that likely leans into high-stakes conflict or emotional depth. It has the kind of edge that can attract readers looking for something gripping and unconventional.

Robs review - As a newer im still discovering book styles and as my first novella I really enjoyed the pacing of this and how we just jumped right in to the action. In the best way, this book made my skin crawl with some of the scenes and the way in which the horrors kept on coming made it a quick read for me. I found the scientific parts and it made the horror feel so real and intense

“Kill It With Fire” follows Bruce, a businessman in search of a new gas reserve for the firm he works for. He and his team visit the Scottish islands of St. Kilda against the advice of the locals.
Overall, I enjoyed this novella. The story is told through the POV of Bruce, who starts out as a self-centered and money-driven man who’s more concerned about gaining wealth than the environment, history or the warnings of the locals. Unfortunately for Bruce, he also has arachnophobia…on an island filled with giant, methane-filled spiders. Find the full blog post at heatherlbarksdale.com

Brilliant! I enjoyed the pace, references of the Scottish language, the setting and theme of the book which magnified the fear aspect of something realistic. I’m from Scotland (though haven’t been to the islands, yet) would recommend to everyone

This had me at the edge of my seat. Im personally a spider hater so knowing that but also living through Bruce's eyes kinda gives you chills.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator was fantastic, his voice was really pleasant to listen to.
The story itself was engaging, edgy, scary and exciting. Kill it with fire might only be a short book but it packed a lot into it.
I thought the story was very well paced and there was plenty going on to keep tension and excitement. Plus there were several surprises. I'll definitely look out for more by Lindsey Kinsella.
Thanks you to Love Book Tours and the author for my copy.

I received this as a ARC via Love Books Tours in exchange for my honest review.
Remote Scottish islands, brutal storms, complete isolation… and spiders. So. Many. Spiders. This was an atmospheric, creepy and wonderfully unsettling read that made my skin crawl on more than one occasion. Lindsey Kinsella takes the already haunting setting of St Kilda and turns it into the perfect backdrop for a story filled with isolation, mystery and something truly sinister lurking beneath the surface.
Bruce is definitely not the ideal candidate for an expedition to one of the most remote places imaginable. He hates the cold, would much rather be in the city and, most importantly, is absolutely terrified of spiders. Naturally, leading a team of corporate surveyors to investigate the possibility of rich gas reserves on St Kilda turns into his own personal nightmare.
The setting was one of my favourite things about this book. The unforgiving landscape, worsening weather and knowledge that there is no easy way off the island create such a claustrophobic atmosphere despite the vast open surroundings. Then add an increasingly horrifying arachnid infestation and you have the perfect recipe for tension. If spiders already make you uncomfortable, prepare yourself because this book really commits to the nightmare fuel!
I also loved the mystery surrounding the island’s abandonment. As the team begins uncovering what really happened and why people left St Kilda, the story becomes darker, stranger and much more sinister. There’s a brilliant sense that something is very wrong long before the characters fully understand what they’re dealing with.
The tension builds steadily before escalating into a wonderfully chaotic fight for survival, with plenty of moments that had me thinking NOPE, absolutely not! It has a great blend of horror, suspense, isolation and dark humour that kept me thoroughly entertained. Creepy, atmospheric and guaranteed to have you checking the corners of the room afterwards, Kill It With Fire was a hugely enjoyable creature-feature horror.

A short, quick read and yet very impactful. Straight away the setting was giving me chills. A very remote island that is now uninhabited after being abandoned instantly gave me warning signals. There may not be people but there is certainly life still on the island!
The characters were largely unlikeable and very well written. Bruce in particular made me feel angry with how money greedy he was and yet he was a fascinating character.
I liked the intermittent breaks from the story which gave some factual insight into spiders and venom. The story was gripping with just enough held back to keep me trying to piece everything together as I read.
