A collection of extracts from leading second-wave feminists, including Michèle Barrett, Mary McIntosh, Lynne Segal, Sheila Rowbotham and Juliet Mitchell
Read with an eye towards the time and place of their production… a good sampling of the intellectual history of feminism, even if some parts don’t feel congruent with my own personal experiences as a feminist, for example.
Currently free from Verso Books - this ebook contains extracts from four radical feminist thinkers. I found this an excellent and concise introduction to their ideas, though it wouldn’t be my recommendation for someone new to feminist thought, as it doesn’t reflect contemporary thinking on LGBTQ+ feminists or nonbinary people, due to when the essays were written. Included are:
•The Anti-Social Family: a socialist critique and evaluation of the nuclear family •Straight Sex: a manifesto arguing that heterosexual sex hurts women •Woman’s Consciousness, Man’s World: considering the progression of feminist thought in a patriarchy •Woman’s Estate: a socialist-feminist statement outlining a new world vision
