Love Poems from Spain and Spanish America

Rate this book
The nearly seventy poems in this bilingual anthology are concerned with many kinds of love: erotic love, sublime love, filial love, maternal love, and love between brother and sister. They also explore feelings of friendship, solidarity, and the altruistic love of all mankind. Ranging in time from the 13th century to the present day, these poems come from diverse traditions and countries—Argentina, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, and Uruguay. Includes a concise biographical sketch of each of the poets.

Perry Higman is also the author of A Man's Dance.

This is a great intro to poetry in Spanish. It has the original on one side and translation on the other. Each poet has a small intro, telling you their birth/death dates, main themes in their work, and a very brief biography.

Most of these poets I was not familiar with, aside from Pablo Neruda, Federico Garcia Lorca, and Jorge Luis Borges.

I was pleased women poets were part of this collection, and I’m now curious to read more by Gabriela Mistral and Alfonsina Storni.

The best poem is "Bars" by Nicolas Guillen. It begins:
Amo los bares y tabernas
junto al mar....
