Robert Thorogood

Robert was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland and read History at Downing College, Cambridge. While at Cambridge, he toured with the university's student comedy troupe Footlights in 1993 and was elected President in 1994. Soon after leaving Cambridge, Robert set up a theatre company that toured small theatres and schools, the highlight of which was a production of Molière's The Miser that he directed and acted in alongside Robert Webb, David Mitchell and Olivia Colman.
Robert wrote for many years - selling scripts to the BBC, ITV and independent film companies - but before 2011 the only script of his that was actually broadcast was a Radio 4 afternoon play called From Abstraction about the life of Paul Wolfskehl.
In 2008, Robert entered the inaugural Red Planet Prize and was a chosen finalist, where he was able to pitch his 'Copper in the Caribbean' idea to Tony Jordan. By 2011, when the show was finally broadcast - making it Robert's first TV broadcast credit at the age of 39 - Robert had become something of a poster boy for 'never giving up on the dream'.
In January 2014, it was announced that Robert had signed a deal with MIRA Harlequin to write three Richard Poole Murder Mystery novels, with the first being published in hardback in January 2015.

It’s always good to be back with friends, isn’t it? These fictional friends just happen to find an awful lot of trouble regularly!
In this 5th book of The Marlow Murder Club series, there are two mysteries to solve, and one of them is hitting close to home for lead protagonist Judith Potts. In a cliffhanger from the last book, we know that her past has come knocking, and the person standing on her doorstep when this book opens is demanding answers for it. What is the truth of her husband’s death long ago?
In the primary mystery, two popular local celebrity gentlemen - one a popular footballer and the other a well-known author - have both been murdered. Are the murders connected or is it just a strange coincidence? That’s what Judith, Becks and Suzie are on the job to find out, and this time they’re on their own since their usual police contact DI Tanika Malik has been temporarily suspended from duty.
No need to ask if these three can solve the mystery on their own, though. If you’ve ever met them, and particularly if you’ve ever met Judith, you know they’ll have things well in hand by the end!
This was another fun one - really they all are. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with an engaging cast of characters and the camaraderie of friends sleuthing together to solve a crime, this is a great series that I’ve enjoyed immensely. Quick-witted crossword setter Judith is a force to be reckoned with, and kind-hearted pastor’s wife Becks and no-nonsense dog walker Suzie each bring a piece of the puzzle that makes them a formidable team for those on the wrong side of the law!
I do have to say that what’s always made this series unmissable for me is not just Robert Thorogood’s wonderful characters and stories, but the delightful narration of Nicolette McKenzie who has so thoroughly become the voice of these characters in my head that I don’t think I could experience the books without her at this point. For those so inclined, PBS Masterpiece has also turned the books into a fun TV series! So many ways to enjoy it!

The fifth book in the Marlow Murder Club series is full of surprises and we find out a lot about Judith's past life. D.I. Malik is suspended and the team have to solve some murders without their usual amount of assistance. In fact most of the leg work is down to Suzie and Becks as Judith is rather occupied with her own train of events.
The biggest and best surprise of all was the identity of the murderer. I never imagined the author would do what he does but it was an excellent move. No spoilers though - you will have to read it to find out. Unless they use this book as a script for the TV show. It is a good one. Five stars.

Although the previous book, Murder on the Marlow Belle, felt flat, this one was the back-on-track I was hoping for. I enjoyed how Susie and Becks, despite being so different, carried on seamlessly in Judith's absence. And—it was a special treat learning a piece of Judith's past. I loved hearing her backstory.

The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts is the 5th-book in Robert Thorogood's The Marlow Murder Club series. I've enjoyed the previous books tremendously, so had been anxiously awaiting this 5th-release.
If you aren't aware, these books follow Judith Potts, a widow in her 70s, and her two BFFs, Suzie and Becks, as they tackle mysteries in their local Marlow community.
This installment involves the deaths of two local celebrities, who although they don't initially seem connected, the women decide to investigate nonetheless, because it certainly can't be coincidence. But why would a killer be targeting such high profile locals?
Judith, Becks and Suzie, never ones to turn away from a truly puzzling mystery, are sure that the two cases must have a link, but finding it will be a challenge.
With all of this going on, it's not a great time for Judith's past to come back and haunt her, but that's exactly what happens. Judith's distracted, are her dark secrets finally going to come to light, or will she be able to put out that fire and solve the murders all at the same time?
I'm so happy to report that this ended up being my favorite book of the series thus far. I loved the growth displayed by all four of our main ladies, I'm including Tanika, their friend and police contact, with this statement, and I feel like they are all truly coming into their own.
There was something so 'final' feeling about this ending though. I'm actually nervous about it. I really hope this isn't the last mystery we get with this fabulous cast of characters.
When I first started with this series, I liked it, but I wasn't in love, but as the series has progressed, each installment seems to get stronger, or perhaps it's that I've become so attached to the ladies. Either way, I feel like Thorogood has done an excellent job leaning into their personalities and allowing the series to grow.
I love the dynamic between Judith, Suzie and Becks. They support each other so well, and where one of them may have a weakness, the others can provide their own strengths, making them a fantastic team.
I really enjoyed learning more about Judith's past in this one as well. Thorogood has been alluding to something potentially shady in Judith's past that she's been hiding from, but we never got the full scope of that. I feel like I have a much deeper understanding of her now.
As usual though, there's also a great amount of humor in the story, particularly when the ladies are in full investigation mode. They're so funny, the hi-jinks they get themselves into, even dangerous ones, all to solve the crimes. Now that's dedication to a goal.
I would highly recommend this series to all Cozy Mystery fans, in particular if you enjoy friendship groups solving mysteries together, or elderly amateur sleuths. The small town vibes are on point as well, as is the humor and heart.

I was blessed to receive an ARC, and I also listened to about 70% of the audiobook. The narrator did an outstanding job bringing the story and characters to life.
With each book, I become more invested in Judith, Suzie, and Becks. I love how the author continues to develop each of them while allowing their friendships to deepen and flourish. They each bring something unique to the group, with Judith remaining the delightfully unconventional ringleader who keeps everything moving.
This installment is filled with murder, blackmail, and scandal, and I found myself constantly changing my mind about the culprit. The mystery kept me guessing right up to the satisfying conclusion.
I highly recommend this series. While each mystery can be enjoyed on its own, I think the experience is even richer when read in order because you get to watch the characters and their relationships grow over time.
This is a series I know I’ll reread, and I sincerely hope it continues for many more books.

When two celebrities are murdered in Marlow, the ladies are quick to jump in and search for clues. Judith, Susie and Becks are busy asking questions and trying to discover a connection. At the same time, Judith has secrets from her past that someone is trying to use to connect her to a crime. The Marlow Murders Club once again discovers secrets, but will they find the answer before the killer finds them?

When Gary Best, local footballing legend, is found dead the Marlow Murder Club want to be on the case but before they can get to the bottom of this death, another local celebrity is killed. The gang should be on the case but with their police contact, Tanika, suspended from duty and Judith hiding some dark secret, will they get to the truth before another famous Marlow resident is targeted?
This is the first of the series that I've read and while I found the plot and relationships easy to follow, it didn't particularly resonate with me. The plot felt quite forced at times and a lot of the dialogue was extremely clunky.
I'd watched a couple of the adaptations and enjoyed the cosy feel but the book simply wasn't for me. I didn't particularly warm to any of the characters - they all felt like caricatures. Its a shame, because the adaptation was really quite enjoyable.
However, since I'm coming at this without having read previous books I think it's only fair to try an earlier book in the series to get more perspective.
The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts is certainly a cosy crime novel and I should imagine that if you are a fan, then you will enjoy this latest episode. I'll go and try a few of the previous novels.

In addition, two D-list celebrities, a footballer (soccer player for the Yanks) and a Mickey Spillane-type mystery writer, are shot to death, and, naturally, Judith, Suzie and Becks investigate. The threesome can’t get their usual support from the Maidenhead Police Station’s Detective Inspector Tanika Malik, who’s been sidelined, but Judith, as usual, finds a way around that. But not even knowing how clever Judith Potts is prepared me for the shocking ending! Such a great addition to a fabulous series.

It was lovely returning to these feisty women. Their relationship with each other is so entertaining and the way they solve murders and work with the police is funny at times. They get their man eventually but, I love the way they manipulate people to get information. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

Update: Thank you to those who commented and let me know of the audio book issue with Libby shortening the book from 9 hours to 6 hours! It looks like it's fixed now and I'm excited to see what the ending of the book actually is when my hold comes in. 😂👏🏼
What the heck kind of ending was that?! I kept looking how close I was to finishing the book, confused at how the pieces would tie together. I was surprised that the book was so short and ended directly as the person responsible was revealed. 😂🤦🏻♀️ I did enjoy the characters as much as in the other books in the series, but would have loved for more details of the two situations to play out. I guess the author is going to get us all to read the next book in the series just to find out!

I loved book #4 in this series, but I have a problem with this one: Revenge disguised as justice committed by a character the reader is supposed to like and admire. And the other characters are just hunky-dory with it, too. No one even discussed the moral implications. This “reveal” left me with a bad taste in my mouth, enough so that I don’t think I will read another one if more follow.

I love these 3 ladies and every year wait eagerly for the release of next installment in the series. But, it took me 15+ days to finish this one and if this book was not part of ' A marlow murder club' , I would have definitely DNFed it.

The last Marlow Murder Club book ended on the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers, and we dive straight back into the action in The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts. Our puzzle-whizz protagonist Judith is the key suspect in a murder this time around, bringing the action much closer to home than the characters are comfortable with.
And, despite this new development understandably taking up a lot of Judith's time in this book, there's also a brand-new case to solve alongside it as another prominent Marlow resident bites the dust. However, her friends Becks and Suzie have to do more of the heavy lifting this time around as their inside woman in the police, Tameka, is also out of action. After four books (and two series on TV) this development was much-needed and so appreciated! I also absolutely adored that they've been pulled brought into Judith's puzzling world and I'm excited about future puzzles and wordplays in the books already.
The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts will immensely satisfy fans of the Marlow Murder Club series as, aside from centring on another strong, local whodunnit story, it really moves our characters forward. We get to learn so much more about Judith's past (the good and the bad) alongside seeing Becks and Suzie shine. The only main character that was sidelined more in this book was Tameka, but it served the plot and I have a feeling we'll get to see a lot more of her again in the next book.
One of the things I love so much about Robert Thorogood's writing is that it's both gripping and fast-paced; he doesn't waffle on with unnecessary plot points or background information but gets straight to the point (save the occasional red herring, of course, to keep everyone on their toes). This is the perfect formula for readers to don their own investigative hats as they follow along on the adventures with Becks, Suzie, and Judith. And makes the inevitable conclusion – whatever it may be – immensely satisfying as you feel a part of the action. It's a very clever strategy and one that has me hooked on the Marlow Murder Club for however long Thorogood will release new stories!
The last Marlow Murder Club book ended on the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers, and we dive straight back into the action in The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts. Our puzzle-whizz protagonist Judith is the key suspect in a murder this time around, bringing the action much closer to home than the characters are comfortable with.
And, despite this new development understandably taking up a lot of Judith's time in this book, there's also a brand-new case to solve alongside it as another prominent Marlow resident bites the dust. However, her friends Becks and Suzie have to do more of the heavy lifting this time around as their inside woman in the police, Tameka, is also out of action. Judith’s past life has caught up with her so when Tanika approaches the 3 ladies asking for help to solve famous footballer, Gary’s, murder she’s too preoccupied to be her usual nosy problem solving self. When another a celebrity is murdered and Tanika is suspended the women realise they need to act quickly. Will Judith be able to put her past ghosts to bed to be able to help? Will Suzy and Becks cope without her? Will they catch their murderer?
I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as previous ones. It felt a bit forced at times, and also a little daft at others. I still think the women are cracking and without question will read the next instalment 🤣

Marlow is really out here treating murder like a community event, and at this point I’m starting to think the town council is just… not addressing it. Because why are local celebrities getting picked off one by one while everyone’s still politely going to lunch? And naturally, right in the middle of this escalating chaos, Judith Potts is having the worst possible week of her extremely eccentric life.
We’re talking dead footballers. Dead authors. Blackmail flying around like it’s a group hobby. And then, just to really keep things spicy, someone shows up to basically say, “Hey Judith, remember your dead husband? What if… you murdered him?” which is, objectively, a rude way to start anyone’s morning.
So now we’ve got two full-blown murders to solve AND Judith’s deeply buried past clawing its way into the present like it’s been waiting for this exact moment to ruin her day. And here’s where this book gets sneaky in the best way. Because while The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts absolutely delivers on the whodunit chaos, it’s also quietly dismantling Judith’s whole “unflappable crossword queen who drinks whisky before noon and fears nothing” persona. Suddenly she’s shaken. Distracted. Human. It’s illegal, honestly. I did not sign up to have feelings about Judith Potts but here we are.
Meanwhile, Becks and Suzie are like, “Cool, mom’s going through it, guess we run the investigation now,” and I LOVED this for them. Becks is out here sharpening into this quietly brilliant, slightly terrifying force, and Suzie continues to operate like she’s powered by vibes, loyalty, and a complete disregard for rules. Watching them take the lead felt like when the side characters in a heist movie realize they’re actually the heist.
And the mystery? Oh, it’s messy messy. Everyone is being blackmailed, which means everyone is lying, which means every single conversation feels like a performance where someone is about to crack. The suspect list isn’t even a list anymore, it’s just… Marlow. The whole town. Lock it down.
There are twists stacked on twists, red herrings doing cardio in the background, and at least three moments where I was fully convinced I had it figured out, only to be immediately humbled. It’s giving “you thought you were the detective? That’s adorable.”
What really got me, though, is how much heart is buried under all the chaos. This series has always been about the friendship, but here it hits harder. Judith, Becks, and Suzie don’t just solve crimes, they carry each other through the mess. And with Judith spiraling a bit under the weight of her past, you really feel how much these women anchor each other. It’s ride-or-die, but make it tea and trespassing.
Also, the tone continues to do that wild balancing act where we’re dealing with genuinely heavy themes, abuse, survival, manipulation, but it never loses that cozy, slightly absurd charm. It’s like, yes, this is dark… but also someone is about to solve it using logic that sounds like a crossword clue and I will accept that without question.
I will say, it takes a minute to find its footing. There’s a lot happening right out of the gate, and for a second it feels like you’ve been dropped into the middle of five different problems with no map. But once everything clicks into place, it’s game over. You’re in. You’re invested. You’re side-eyeing every character like you’ve personally been wronged.
And the reveal? Offensive. Disrespectful. Completely satisfying. I love being wrong when it’s done this well. Four stars, easily. This series continues to be that perfect mix of clever, chaotic, and weirdly emotional, like if a crossword puzzle and a therapy session teamed up to solve crimes.

What I did like about the Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts: seeing the women continue to gel more as a group and getting to know more about Judith's past. I found her plotline the most compelling. I wish this drama in the past had taken place in the UK rather than out of the country and that the whole book had been focused on it. (I can't remember if the book addresses the jurisdiction issue.) And the ending was fantastic!
I found the celebrity murder plot less compelling and a little too confusing at times. How many celebrities can be in the small village of Marlow, I ask?? (Well, since they are being murdered in this book, a lot less than there used to be!)

'The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts' is another great addition to the Marlow Murder Club series (and potentially the series closer). As always with this series it has a clever mystery, humour, emotion and our ever present loveable core cast of characters. I really enjoyed central mystery in this one but there was also added intrigue with us finally being promised the backstory about Judith and what happened to her husband all those years ago.
As always there are plenty of twists and red herrings and a reveal that I genuinely didn't see coming. I'm glad we've also had a resolution to the story around Judith's past that has been hinted at in all the previous books and if this is the series closer it gives us a great sense of finality in that respect. The friendships at the heart of this book add warmth and heart and whilst Judith's side quest took away from that a little we were well rewarded in the end and it was great to see Becks and Suzie get more time to shine.
While it took a little time to fully settle into the rhythm of the story, once it did it was hugely enjoyable and yet again gave me a fun and satisfying read that delivers exactly what I look for in this series. If this is the end I'll be sad to say goodbye but from start to finish this series has been an absolute delight.

I love this series it’s like meeting up with friends everytime I open the book.
This was full of suspense waiting to find out what was happening with Judith’s mysterious visitor accusing her of murder.
I love these characters, the writing brings them alive and a realism to their lives.

This is the fifth book in The Marlow Murder Club series and I do recommend reading the series in order. Until now I have listened to the series on audiobook. I prefer reading on my Kindle vs audiobooks because I retain the details better when I see the words with my eyes. Boy am I glad I read this one!
The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts is layered in mystery. Judith has been accused of killing her late husband Philippos, by Philippos's daughter, almost 50 years after he died. Eleni has come all the way from Corfu to accuse Judith of murder, saying she has definitive evidence that she'll take to the police if Judith does not willingly confess. While Judith is dealing with her personal demons there is also a killer on the loose. First a famous footballer (that's soccer for us Americans) is found shot dead and then a popular novelist the day after. With DI Tanika Malik suspended from the force it's up to Judith, Suzie, and Becks alone to find the link between the deaths and catch the killer.
I've come to love this group of women throughout the years, especially Becks. She's really come into her own due to the support of her friends. Who doesn't want to see women empowering other women? She's become a force to be reckoned with! I also enjoyed seeing Judith's softer side. She was much more relatable in this book, yet as intelligent as ever. As far as the story goes, this one is my favorite in the series so far. The stakes were much higher this time and the way all the pieces came together felt natural yet creative. I only wish we got to see more of Suzie and Becks solving Judith's puzzles before the final reveal.

I love that we finally learn a bit more about Judith's past and the things she's been hiding! Especially after the cliffhanger ending of the book befoew. This was really well done and I loved seeing a new side of Judith.
The friendship between the women and the whole dynamic continues to be the series' strongest point for me, I always enjoy returning for more.
So far, this is definitely my favorite in the series!

I have enjoyed this series so far and was excited when book 5 in audio came into my library. However this one is my least favorite of the series. I don't like giving it a 2 star review.
This book felt really rushed. Things fell into place far too easily. I had to keep reminding myself that it is all what seems like to be within days of the last case and not something spread out over weeks or months. At one point I checked my progress and saw I only had one hour left on the audio and kept wondering if I missed a chunk of audio because this book went by way too fast. I had a look back and the first 4 books were all 9+hours long where this one is just over 6.
I like that there is potential for exploring the death of Judith's husband.

Everyone keeps talking about how we are starting to know more about Judith but do we actually learn much at all except maybe she did have more to do with her husband's death? Because if she didn't, why would she have a secret passport and cash hidden. I guess it sort of reveals who the killer of the two famous people were. I know that stories are all a bit of a fairytale land and I need to take logical thinking out of the equation. When they were walking through the tunnels, I wondered to myself if they were going to find some sort of satanic cult residence. Instead they find what is potentially someone's private party residence for partying and infidelity. I enjoy the building of the friendship and I will keep listening to this series. I am just really not sure how so many people are giving this book 5 stars when it felt very unfinished with convenient coincidences throughout the whole thing. The step-daughter angle was hard for me to get behind. This villain character who is a full adult seems to have the mentality of a 10 year old. She should be old enough to understand that her "Amazing" father at the very least cheated at minimum of once on the person who he was married to but was adamant that there was no way he could have been abusive to his wife. All of these people her whole life talked about how great he was despite his own mother knowing he was abusive, despite it being very obvious that he was a cheater.

Thorogood writes the most wonderful fun books. They’re like boxes of chocolates. I feel almost guilty reading them—they are simply fun, an indulgence for me.
They’re all enjoyable but with each book I become increasingly attached to the characters. I love our trio of amateur detectives. Suzi, the flighty dog walker; Becks the seemingly conformist wife of the village vicar, and (my favorite) the elderly but dynamic and ornery Judith Potts. I’m also attached to their connection to the police force, Tanika. And I like that this book is dominated by a variety of female voices.
In Mysterious Affair, Judith’s past is the central mystery of the book. It is the heart of the book although there is the murders that surround her story. Judith is preoccupied with the appearance of Eleni—a young woman threatening to unveil a past Judith wants to keep in the past. The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts takes up where Murder on the Marlow Belle left off, with Judith Potts being confronted with the skeletons of her past. Specifically, a Greek woman named Eleni Paphides knocks at her door, claiming to be the daughter of Judith’s late husband Philippos, and accuses Judith of his 1976 murder on the Greek island of Corfu!
Meanwhile, Judith, Becks and Suzie become embroiled in another local murder, only 24 hours after they solved the last one (see Murder on the Marlow Belle). Second-grade footballer and Marlow resident Gary Wise has been fatally shot in the woods behind his home overnight, and Detective Inspector Tanika Malik requests the assistance of the amateur detective trio. With Tanika suspended from her position soon after, they’ll have to expand their clue-gathering skills to solve the crime.

I’d recommend The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts to series readers, and would strongly suggest that this book be read as a companion and subsequent to Murder on the Marlow Belle, for the sake of narrative continuity.
The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts takes up where Murder on the Marlow Belle left off, with Judith Potts being confronted with the skeletons of her past. Specifically, a Greek woman named Eleni Paphides knocks at her door, claiming to be the daughter of Judith’s late husband Philippos, and accuses Judith of his 1976 murder on the Greek island of Corfu!
Meanwhile, Judith, Becks and Suzie become embroiled in another local murder, only 24 hours after they solved the last one (see Murder on the Marlow Belle). Second-grade footballer and Marlow resident Gary Wise has been fatally shot in the woods behind his home overnight, and Detective Inspector Tanika Malik requests the assistance of the amateur detective trio. With Tanika suspended from her position soon after, they’ll have to expand their clue-gathering skills to solve the crime.
Before long, another murder occurs - this time that of a well known thriller author who also lives in Marlow. Judith, Becks and Suzie quickly establish a link between the two murdered men - both were being blackmailed by the same malevolent villain.
Meanwhile, Judith’s normally razor-focussed crime-solving mind is distracted by Eleni’s accusation and her frequent appearances at both Judith’s own home and elsewhere around Marlow. Where is she getting her information from and, more importantly, is there any truth to her allegations?
The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts takes the three heroines on a typically madcap pursuit of the criminal, drawing them into the celebrity circles in the Thames Valley, before a dramatic and shocking denouement in a network of caves beneath one of the area’s stately homes.
The Mysterious Affair of Judith Potts is a light and entertaining read, in author Robert Thorogood’s signature humorous and rather camp style, although it does verge into morally ambiguous territory more than the previous books. apparently the audiobook has an error which explains why ends abruptly. still, i hated this writing. maybe the author has gotten too used to writing scripts because this felt a lot like acting direction. “she came out of the tunnel and blinked as if to get used to the sunlight.” YOU DON’T BEED TO SAY THAT PART ROBERT

Visiting with Judith, Suzie, and Becks is always a trip, but this one is a serious roller-coaster! The morning after, they helped nail down Oliver Beresfords killer, Judith is greeted with a blast from her past, when her husband's illegitimate daughter shows up at her door, claiming she has proof that Judith killed her father 49 years ago. While Judith dismisses her, she is definitely thrown off, so when Tanika contacts her to let her know that a local football player, a Marlow celebrity has been murdered she is surprised by the reception she gets! It's only when Suzie and Becks get involved that Judith get dragged into the investigation, only to have Tanika be suspended and the ladies find themselves working around Detective Brendan Perry. When a second celebrity, this a well-known author, is murdered can the ladies figure out if there is a connection? Who wanted these famous men dead and why? Can the ladies find answers without any police help? As well as with Judith so obviously off her game? Come along for one of those really crazy journeys we have come to expect from this group.
