A F*ckery of Fae & Fate #2

A F*ckery of Songs & Shadows

Rate this book
In another epically absurd adventure, the notorious dragon rider-and-dragon bounty hunter duo, Rhema and Benny, have disguised themselves as security personnel to get into the most popular musical festival of the Courtchella. With a bounty reward big enough to fill their pockets for months with booze and butter, Rhema and Benny are tasked to kill the up-and-coming bardic boy band, Morally Gone, who are enchanting their fandom into mindless groupies for better PR.

But when they run into Rhema’s old rival—and old flame—Rosanna, they find themselves in need of her extensive knowledge of the festival’s cave system in order to kill the shadowy men before their biggest performance—and enchantment—yet. It’s too bad Rhema’s got a chip on her shoulder after her last encounter with Rosanna, otherwise this bounty adventure might’ve gone as smooth as butter instead of these three getting stuck in a backstage tunnel system filled with shadowy booby traps.

Will Rhema, Benny, and Rosanna make it to Morally Gone’s performance before it’s too late? Will Rhema and Rosanna be able to work through their glaringly obvious miscommunication trope and finally admit their feelings? But more importantly, will Benny be able to get more of his new favorite artisanal butterballs once this is over?

A F*ckery of Songs & Shadows, or: the one where Rhema is a victim of penises (more than she was before)

Mixing satire, absurdity, and the grotesque with genuinely interesting characters like in the first book, we see Rhema and Benny collaborating with Rhema’s situationship, Rosanna, to take down a boy band that uses the DADDY (I won’t explain) to...let’s say grow an audience of devoted fans. As expected, there’s terrible men to kill, artefacts to recover, butter to gobble up, and disaster muscle-mommies that don’t communicate their feelings. Rhema and Benny’s relationship is definitely much improved here and they manage to have some honest and heart-warming interactions, while Rhema and Rosanna’s is more disastrous than ever.
Although Rosanna is proving to me extremely enigmatic and also a bit frustrating, it’s good to know that the next instalments will shine some light on her character and maybe give a new perspective on their relationship. It would also be nice to have more details on Rhema’s past, because even though we know she was married and that her wife died, and we still see the consequences of that in the first book and briefly in this one as well, some flashbacks would give a lot more substantial proof of Rhema’s trauma, which is the reason she became a bounty hunter in the first place.
Overall this was a fun novella were muscly ladies kill men and monsters, so yeah. Good times.

I received an eARC of the book from the author and this represents my honest opinion.

A F*ckery of Songs & Shadows by A.J. Braun is the second book in the A F*ckery of Fae & Fate series. This novella follows Rhema and Benny on a bounty assignment to kill a band that is enchanting groupies into mindless slaves for PR. They are unexpectedly joined by another bounty hunter named Rosanna, who appears to have a bit of a history with Rhema.
I haven't read the first book, so this was my introduction to this trio and their world. It is absurd and fun. Rhema and Rosanna are muscle mommies who aren't so great with emotions. The mission adventure is ridiculous and hilarious. Benny the dragon is precious and must be protected at all costs.
This quick read is a fun filler between heavier content. There is a spicy scene that's a little over the top, given the circumstances. The emotional stakes are believable. The antics are not. The bats are insane, and I love Rhema's reaction to them. The witty/snarky banter between all parties is entertaining. This novel is just a silly good time.
I am interested to know more about what's up with Rosanna, so I will want to read the next installment. I still want to read the first one as well to fill in any missing pieces.
The writing style makes this an easy read, and the editing was clean.

I got an ARC of this book.

I downloaded and read the book in the same day (I’m so sorry backlog. I am still working on it, but a novella to get my confidence up again while I am tackling 500+ page books is helpful sometimes). I was ready for the next adventure of Rhema and Benny. It really is the Shrek and Donkey adventure that is needed in the world. This hits the feels of the second half of the original movie. The heart of it all. The first book was all jokes and just some glimpses of heart. This was a 180. Tons of heart, only a little bit of jokes. It worked perfectly.

Reading them back to back will be less monotonous. There is still that feeling of lightness, even when Rhema is thinking of her deceased wife. Combining these two into one sitting would be wonderful, I wish I had done that. Being able to get the humor and the heart at these levels combined would be incredible.

I liked this book a bit more in some ways. I liked the increased emotional vulnerability of Rhena. I liked the world building. I liked that it was a bit more serious (it is in no means serious, it is still that goofy romp that Benny promises). I liked that this one didn’t go where I thought it was. It allowed for a bit of a twist that still felt authentic and human. It was delightful. I did miss some of the humor of the first one. The plot was a little more linear in this one, which didn’t lend itself as well to shenanigans. Though I will argue that bats with giant penises are a shenanigan all their own.

Overall, this was a delightful book. I can’t wait to read more Rhema and Benny. Maybe even a book from some of the other perspectives to flesh out the world.

** thanks to the author, A.J. Braun, for this ARC **

This sequel novella brings back bounty hunter Rhema and her dragon Benny and it’s an absolute delight to spend more time with this duo. What A.J. does so well is craft a story that moves. There’s no bloat or dilly-dallying, just a tight, engaging narrative that trusts the reader and respects their time. For a novella format, that’s no small feat. The humor lands more often than not, though a few moments veer into corniness that might make you groan as much as grin, a minor quibble that never derails the fun. As a fellow gay, I really enjoyed the queer plotline woven throughout. A.J. integrates it with a naturalness that feels refreshing…it’s not a subplot tacked on for representation points, but a genuine emotional thread that enriches the whole narrative. Highly recommended for fans of witty fantasy adventures with heart.

When I heard the author was going to release a comedic fantasy that riffs on the Saja Boys from K-POP Demon Hunters, I immediately jumped at getting an advanced reader copy. Needless to say, the book was certainly entertaining.

The story follows bounty hunter Rhema and her dragon buddy Benny as they tackle an assignment at “Courtchella” to kill the shadowy boy band, Morally Gone. Things quickly get dicey though when Rhema’s old flame Rosanna shows up and shadow magic begins to ravage the concert-goers. The shenanigans grow increasingly unhinged (and very phallic), with the sheer absurdity comprising the story’s strongest source of humor.

Benny was by far my favorite character. His high energy and upbeat attitude make the perfect foil for Rhema’s grounded cynicism. Rosanna is an interesting and mysterious addition to the team, though her behavior suggests deeper (and seedier) intentions for Rhema and their relationship.

Overall, the pacing was good and the action was engaging, though I would’ve like to see more of how Rhema’s past motivates her decisions. We hear about her deceased wife, but we don’t really get a glimpse into their relationship or what kind of emotional attachments Rhema had with her. She’s understandably lonely, but her drive to be with Rosanna is never developed beyond a superficial and physical attraction. Granted, the book is short and these detail may get addressed in future installments, but I think the added emotional weight couldn’t done a lot here.

Regardless, the story delivers a successful Shrek/Donkey buddy dynamic and is great for anyone who appreciates a romantic fantasy with a touch of spice and some (extremely) irreverent comedy.

Thank you A.J. Braun for sending me this advance review copy for free. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book was absolutely bonkers in the best way! It's so hard to review this and keep it PG rated.

It's the perfect quick read to help distract you from the hellscape our world is right now. I laughed so hard I cried, more than once!

The banter between everyone is fantastic. There is even a ton of emotional depth and character growth tucked in-between the VERY well endowed bats flying around. IYKYK. Also who doesn't love a butter eating dragon? Benny is hilarious and the perfect comedic relief. He deserves and entire mountain of butter balls in all the flavors.

Poor Rhema really goes through it in this one, and her reactions the overabundance of "manly rods" cracked me up the entire time. Did I mention the bats? Who doesn't want to have one of those try to whack you in the face? She also has to work through some deep emotional stuff and abandonment issues while constantly dodging meat poles, and dealing with some irritating magic. No DADDY issues here, right?

Rosanna was really fun too, and the back and forth between the two of them was so good. There were so many times I wanted to smack them upside the head. Talk to each other you dummies! Good grief. I loved it every minute of the miscommunication and sass.

The ending was unexpected, and so perfect. I'm not gonna spoil it, so you have to go read it for yourself.

Overall this was an amazing read that will have you laughing your butt off the entire time. It's so good!

WARNING: This book may cause tear-inducing laughter.

This story leans into Shrek-style humor, but swaps Donkey for a chaotic, butter-obsessed dragon who completely steals the spotlight. Add a music festival setting, demon-hunting energy, and a very self-aware tone, and it becomes a genuinely fun read.

Rhema and Rosanna are standout characters—strong, funny, and full of tension thanks to their shared past. Benny the Dragon adds another layer of humor with his love of music, dancing, and his insistence that he’s an expert in music literacy.

The plot follows Rhema and Benny as bounty hunters posing as security at Courtchella. Their mission is to eliminate the band Morally Gone and destroy The Diadem of Ancient Darkness and Devoted Yearning (also known as DADDY). As expected, things do not go smoothly.

Instead, the story delivers absurd encounters, including enchanted creatures, chaotic tunnels, and plenty of comedic moments—especially once Rosanna enters the picture.

It’s a short read that can easily be finished in one sitting, but it leaves you wanting more. Light, funny, and intentionally ridiculous, it doesn’t take itself too seriously—and that’s exactly its strength.

Thank you to the author for the ARC. I’m looking forward to reading more, including A Fckery of Fae & Fate*.

"Benny, we're not here to fangirl over an immortal bardic boy band."

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Alright, fellas, time to shove this one down your throats.
*Insert A.J "that's what she said" here*

"Ass up. Face down. Can't lose!"

The second instalment to Rhema and Benny's shenanigans is a 180 from their first adventure.
This one has a lot more feelings, while being a lot more subtle with the parody of the romantasies we know and love.

I loved seeing a much more emotional side to Rhema, even if she had to dodge a lot of dicks (literal) and glorified Saja Boys.
Imagine K-Pop Demon Hunters; but give add a dragon and a DADDY.

Benny's love for butter balls continues, while Rhema's disdain for anyone without boobs is much more prominent here.
That's not a bad thing.

A.J. continues to make me cackle with these shenanigans. Be it the relationship between a dragon and his rider, or the subtle (and not-so-subtle) references (and/or digs) to your typical romantasy tropes.
Again, satire is always a hit-or-miss for me, but A.J. does it in such an enjoyable way.

"You know I don't like flying dicks." "They're more scared of you than you are of them."

Thank you, A.J., for the opportunity to read this eARC!

This was an absolute blast to read! At about 100 pages, you can read it in no time at all, and I am begging you to read this novella! A F*ckery of Songs and Shadows is fantasy, but not exactly what one thinks of when they imagine the genre. It is chaos of the best kind, a very friendly dragon who loves butter and music, a grumpy, GRUMPY bounty hunter who does not ever want to see her situationship- thing again, and that situationship- thing who has shown up to party. Or not.

Benny and Rhena have a job to do at Courtchella, and Benny is excited about the band. Rhena just wants to get home(who wouldn't? Sweaty, drunken maidens and heathens everywhere? The worst!) but then a very familiar and very sober-appearing woman is in danger.. Rosanna, the situationship. Also a bounty hunter and dragon rider. The team have a mission to complete, and there are plenty of distractions.

I absolutely loved this story so much! I saw another reader refer to Rhema and Benny's relationship as Shrek and Donkey style and I agree one thousand percent. A.J. is so clever, and the banter is top notch. Oh, and if you like d*cks, they're like, everywhere. The walls, the bats.. just read it!

Oh how I missed this duo. Benny and his love of butter and ballads. Rhema and her grumpy outer shell and gooey interior. Let’s face it. She just wants to find love after losing her late wife.

We got to know a little more about Rosanna in this book, and that girl has some secrets that I want to know more about.

The book starts with the fearsome duo on their way to get their next bounty in the caves of Courtchella. They need to take out a musical group who stole a magical diadem.

This book is pure chaos in the best way possible. With Benny singing across the bond enjoying every moment in the caves, Rhema being miserable at every turn and Rosanna using her muscles and expertise of killing magical monsters.

This is quick, fun read but it is packed with action, a little spice and taking down arrogant men, and fighting monsters with an unhinged flair.

I was so sad when I reached the last page, but I’m excited to read what crazy adventures these two will get up to next.

I am so lucky to be a part of A.J’s Street Team and that I was given this ARC to read and review.

What did I just read?! And why did I like it so much?

This book is absolutely chaotic, and I am here for it! It is absolutely absurd and so fun. Rhema is an absolute muscle mommy with grumpy energy, while Benny her dragon is a singing jokester who is obsessed with butter who needs to be protected at all costs! We follow them through a task of searching for the Diadem of Ancient Darkness and Devoted Yearning… or D.A.D.D.Y. When nothing goes right, you just have to roll with the punches!

This was my first introduction to this author and this world, and it was a good time. The writing is emotional while keeping it fun and light, and the relationships are believable in their dynamic. The bats are outrageously ridiculous! This is a super quick read and a lighthearted filler between more intense content, a palette cleanser if you will. I will be going back to read the first book to catch any missing pieces for this motley crew.

3.5 rounded up.
Thank you to the author for an eARC of this novella.

⚠️ PUBLIC READING WARNING: READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.⚠️

✨ I just finished my arc and it was an easy 5/5 🧈 stars of pure unadulterated chaos. My dignity is gone because I was laughing so hard in public. If you saw me side eyeing u to make sure you wasn’t looking at my screen … mind your business 😅✨

✨ Our poor muscle mummy Rhema is really being put through the ringer in this one. She just want to be a badass dragon rider, but instead she’s stuck dealing with the Saja Boys ( Temu version ) and more nonsense than one woman should have to handle. Let’s not talk about Rosanna. ✨

✨ If you love Romantasy but think this genre needs a hilarious reality check , you NEED this series. It’s short, punchy, and it’s the funniest thing I’ve read so far. Also if your a slow reader like me you get to enjoy this book longer 🥰 ✨

The Chaos Checklist :

💪🏽 Muscle mummy
🎤 Villainous Boy Band ~ Meet ( DADDY )
🍆 Flying D*icks ( I said what I said )
🎭 Romantasy Parady
☀️ Grumpy x Sunshine ( Shrek / Donkey energy )
📈 Chaos Level 100/10
😳 Public Embarrassment ~ High ( but worth the stares )

✨ Huge thanks to @ajbraunauthor for this Arc! Can’t wait to see what the hibbly jibbly Rosanna gets up to. ✨

Once again A.J. Braun has written the most ridiculous, absurd and absolutely hilarious novella I've had the pleasure to read.

Imagine if you take Jaskier and the Saja Boys and blend them up to make a medieval fantasy boy band that are kind of evil and a lot stupid. Because of the kind of evil part, Rhema, my favorite grumpy muscle mommy, and Benny, the show-tune singing dragon, are tasked with collecting the bounty on the boy band at the fantasy version of Coachella. And Rhema's bounty hunting former fling shows up to "help". And can't forget about Benny's butter obsession throwing wrenches into the operation.😆

It's a recipe for hilarity, near disaster and a load of phallic graffiti (because bardic boy bands are gonna be immature). Thank you A.J. for the opportunity to advance read! 💜

**ARC Reader**
This was incredibly hilarious 10/10 no notes. I’m locked in for this series as long as the author is. Quotes from this book will worm their way into my vocabulary I have no doubt.

A dragon with a butter addiction and a lesbian who’s not (is very) afraid of a giant wang with always have a place in my heart. You’ll laugh! You’ll have feels! You’ll reread it and say out loud so your roommate ends up hearing you as yourself “did I really read that correctly” or laughing to yourself as you draw up stupid bookmark ideas.

Both these books I this series are quick reads but they are fun and silly for the most part. If you need a little sapphic whimsy with light smut read the first book and then this one 😋

These satire-filled concoctions are the perfect palette cleanser (just like butterballs!) when your tbr has been taken over by 400+ page heavy hitters filled with world building.

I can't put my finger on it, but I think I enjoyed #1 just a bit more than this one, but all in all, it was still a fab time. Loved the KPOP Demon Hunters-esque villains, the DADDY lol, and the mockery of common tropes of course.

Wish it was more spicy overall, felt like a dusting of seasoning.

Benny, this series wouldn't be half as good without you. Rhema is lucky to have you in her life.

3.8/5 ★

Thank you to A.J. Braun for an eARC of this book, this is my honest review and all opinions are my own. Looking forward to book #3 and continuing to support this author through all their work!

Such a fun and hilarious read!! I absolutely love Rhema and Benny and their dynamic! The internal conversations between them is SOOOO funny, I was in tears with their back and forth.

I also loved the addition of Rosanna, she added so much fun and variety to the story and personalities! The tension between her and Rhema was heartbreaking and SO HOT! 🤭

The plot of the book was really fun and interesting and so fleshed out while being such a quick read! I tore through this book and cannot wait for more of their adventures! The DADDY, morally gone, Tamii and who he is spoofed from 💀💀 ICONIC, the whole damn thing!!

I give it 3.5 ⭐️

This was such a chaotic and fun little read. I really liked the dynamic between Rhema and Benny, especially Benny with his butter obsession, he honestly steals every scene he’s in.
The story is very over the top and ridiculous (in a good way). I did like the emotional parts with Rhema though, especially when it comes to her past and her relationship with Rosanna. That added a bit more depth to the story.

I also liked the bats with big dicks, I could actually picture it while reading and it made me laugh so much.

It’s definitely a quick, entertaining read with a lot of humor.

Thank you so much A.J for letting me be a part of your team.🌺❤️

I just want to hug that bounty hunter, she goes through so much in 100 pages

Ben is a hilarious dragon who loves driving his grumpy rider to their limits

It’s messed up how Rosanna treats Rhem. Like she just leaves Rhem hanging every time. Def red flag behaviour.

And then in the end Rosanna just unloads on Rhem and its so sad what she ends up doing.

And honestly I feel so bad for Rhem, I just want to hug that bounty hunter.

Key points in no particular order:
- FF
- Longing
- Concert security
- Dragon riding
- Bounty hunters
- Demons
- Soul stealing
- Unrequited love
- Non/dub con
- Spicy 3/5

RHEMA AND BENNY SINGING IN A TREE
B-u-t-t-e-r-y

no seriously WHO authorized this insanity!?
That must have been Rosanna! She’s been cagey about her whereabouts and left Rhema alone at the bar on the worst anniversary ever.

So now Rhema and Benny signed up to claim the DADDY to defeat the shadow boy band who is using it to ensnare women at concerts!!! And who crashed the party? ROSANNA!!!!!

Choreography is the key! Shadow daddies take on a new meaning. Please Rhema just kiss the girl already? Bring your butterballs! You’ll need them for Benny!

Ass up. Face down. Can't lose.

I devoured this like butterballs and it was so good go be back on an adventure with Benny and Rhema.

This time we got to see much more of Rosanna, which I loved. And their dynamic was 10/10.

I already loved book one and this felt like the obvious next episode. A new bounty, a rival coming too close and two sapphics unable to communicate.

This books should be for you
...if you like KPOP demon hunters x quests with a dragon
...not so serious jokes about current pop culture and romantasy
....ridiculous characters and creatures.

Review of an ARC copy from the author

Another hilariously satirical adventure from Rhema and Benny, with everything you could want from fights, dead immortal men, a disastrous dating life, a singing dragon, and butter!
Love the witty writing style that will genuinely have you laughing out loud, that’s expertly paired with an undertone of human emotion and a fast moving plot all wrapped up in under 100 pages making it the perfect palette cleanser read. The book equivalent of delving into an episode of your favourite comedy, guaranteed to pull anyone out of a reading slump!

Yet again, a whimsical and hilarious tale of Rhema and her dragon (who's name I'm not even going to try spelling). I don't know how A.J. does it, but her ability to add unabashed satire to a romantasy is exactly what I've needed in my life and didn't know it until I read book one of this series. It's humor that isn't for the modest and for that, she has become an auto-buy author for me! I loved this addition to the series and I can not wait to see what comes next for my new fave bounty hunter!

Thank you so much to the author for the advanced ebook copy in exchange for my honest review.

Lmfao another hilarious romp full of loving satire, chaotic sapphic angst, and cheeky irreverent humor a la Monty Python or the Legend of Vox Machina. The Traveler would have loved 'Morally Gone.'

These are the perfect palette cleanse, a fantasy romance snack of the ridiculous variety. I'm not going to quote my favorite puns or one-liners because it will ruin the surprises, but fuck me they're so funny.

This review might get me kicked off all my platforms but...

If you need a serious book, this isn’t it. This is a comedy. 100% for people without sticks stuck where the sun don’t shine. I laughed so very much. I loved Benny the most. The sidekick steals the show completely. Or maybe it’s the giant dongs everywhere. It’s hard to say. Look, it’s 5 stars. No notes. Because it’s so. Much. Fun.
