Raising my cousin’s three kids wasn’t in my five-year plan. Actually, it wasn’t in any plan.
One minute I’m a single labor and delivery nurse living a quiet life and the next, I’m navigating guardianship hearings, meltdowns, and homework I’m pretty sure requires a math degree.
Enter Hayes Carlisle.
My best friend’s older brother. Chicago Colts newest catcher. And the man I once kissed and immediately pretended I didn’t.
So, when the custody battle I’ve been dreading becomes a reality, I shouldn’t be surprised that Hayes swoops in with a wild idea—a fake relationship. According to him, pretending we’re together will polish his image and prove to the court I’m not taking on an instant family alone.
But pretending to be Hayes’ girlfriend is a terrible idea.
Because he remembers how to make me laugh. Because he looks at me like our kiss wasn’t a one-time mistake. Because the kids start asking him to read bedtime stories. Because my heart starts wanting things my life doesn’t have room for.
I can manage the chaos. I can fight for these kids. But pretending not to fall for Hayes Carlisle?
Piper Rayne is a USA Today Bestselling author duo. Our goal is to bring you romance stories that have "Heartwarming Humor With a Side of Sizzle" (okay...you caught us, that's our tagline). A little about us... We both have kindle’s full of one-clickable books. We're both married to husbands who drive us to drink. We're both chauffeurs to our kids. Most of all, we love hot heroes and quirky heroines that make us laugh, and we hope you do, too.
Holy forking shirt balls people! I shipped Leighton and Hayes so freaking hard! This has to now be my favorite book so far that I’ve read by Piper Rayne and let me tell ya, this author duo has it DOWN.
This series will be 4 books and will all be out by the end of June!
Hayes will make you melt because not only has he been thinking about Leighton since FOREVER, but he readily jumps in and helps after Leighton unexpectedly is granted custody of 3 young children. Talk about a knight in shining armor. The way Hayes, who is also a professional baseball player, just latches onto the kids and the situation as a whole has you swooning.
Leighton finds herself having to possibly fight for the custody and this is where the fake dating comes into play. Not to spoil anything, but they were hardly successful at fake dating because feelings were already in play from pretty much when Hayes stepped into the house and into the Leighton’s and the kiddos’ lives. You gotta read this!
Favorite parts of the book? 1. The spice was on point! 🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 2. the banter! 5/5 3. The interaction between Hayes and his teammates (they’re hilarious yall)
I highly recommend this book and cannot WAIT for the rest of the series to come out! I’m so glad they’re all coming out this year too!!! Aaahhh!
Thank you so much to Hambright PR and Authors Piper and Rayne for the amazing opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review!

4.5 stars rounded to 5 for Goodreads!
I absolutely flew through this one! I couldn’t stop - I loved Leighton & Hayes’ story! Leighton finds herself unexpectedly a single guardian to 3 precious kiddos & Hayes is a pro baseball player. He’s also Leighton’s best friend’s brother! They end up in a fake dating situation & things really take off from there! Their chemistry was evident & I’ll let you read to find out what all happened next. 😍 Something else I really enjoyed about this story is ALL of the side characters! The best friend / sister - Callie & and the other baseball players we got to meet. Ah! I know we will see them all in the rest of the series & I already cannot wait! 🤩
Highly recommend jumping into this new series from the fabulous duo, Piper Rayne! I have enjoyed everything I’ve read by them so far! Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Thank you to Hambright PR for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What to expect when reading Hotshot; -Single Guardian -Fake Relationship -Best Friends Older Brother -He Falls First -Slow Burn
This is book one of the Dugout series! You get to follow Hayes and Leighton! When Leighton gets guardianship of three kiddos she has to prove she is right for them to be with. Hayes is coming off a hard season and trying to clean up his act. Can these two help each other to make sure Leighton gets to keep the kids? This was such a good story of team work and loving to the fullest. These kids were something else (in a good way) I love how each had their only little quirk about them lol I loved the army she had behind her, even though she didn’t want the help lol, she is a lot like me in that sense because I probably would of handled that the same way. I loved these two main characters their chemistry was so fun and flirty which I think helped her in a stressful situation! I can’t wait to continue this series 🙌🙌🙌
Side notes: -her antenna up 😂 -math sucks😅😂 -I would love for an interesting nail day like that lol -His mom lol -Tweetie 😂💀
Fav Quote: •”You say we can never kiss again, than I come in here to see you on all fours. Your playing games, Leighton Sinclair” •”I don’t care who you are. If you hurt her. I have a lot of friends with social media accounts”
Make sure you get your copy of the book when it releases Feb. 17th⚾️
✨ARC REVIEW✨ 4.5⭐️ What a start to this new series!! Leighton just has her world turned upside down when her cousin, basically her sister, and her husband pass and she’s thrust into the role of guardian for their three kids. She never imagined this is where she would end up, but the one thing she really didn’t see coming….her best friend’s brother and er longtime crush stepping up to help her get permanent custody. This arrangement may start out as fake but they both realize pretty early on that this thing never really was fake. But with all the chaos in her life up until now, will Leighton let herself have this happiness or will one wrong move from Hayes send her spiraling?
Oh I loved everything single character in this book!! Leighton and Hayes have my heart! I love the way that Hayes steps up for Leighton and the kids. He such a good guy and just wants to be there to help them. These kiddos are so fun too! I loved Monroe’s mission and the way they got all the players in on it too. Leighton is dealing with so much from the kids to losing her cousin/sister to fighting her feelings for Hayes. I was giggling and swooning the whole time. There was so much to this story and all the elements and I just really enjoyed this one! I cannot wait to see what comes next too!!
Tropes: ✨Single Guardian ✨Brother’s Best Friend ✨Fake Dating ✨Baseball Romance ✨He Falls First
Leighton is a single labor and delivery nurse who suddenly finds herself stepping into the role of caretaker for her cousin’s three kids. Overwhelmed and stretched thin, she doesn’t realize just how much she needs help until her best friend does. Unable to be there herself, she sends her brother, Hayes, instead. The chemistry between Leighton and Hayes has always been there, so it doesn’t take long for those sparks to reignite.
Hayes immediately jumps in, doing everything he can to lighten Leighton’s load without hesitation or questions. While Leighton struggles to accept help at first, she eventually realizes she doesn’t have to do it all alone. I absolutely adored their journey. Watching Hayes show up so fully for Leighton and the kids was so heartwarming, and together they all fit perfectly as a family.
The narration was fantastic, as expected from a Piper Rayne audiobook. JF Harding and CJ Bloom perfectly captured Hayes and Leighton, bringing their personalities and chemistry to life. The full cast added an extra layer of fun, making this a definite must listen.
Thank you, Piper Rayne and Valentine PR for the ALC.
Give me a best friend’s brother, sports romance and I will eat it up every single time.
The full cast narration is absolutely incredible in this one and I enjoyed every second of it. You can feel the chemistry between the narrators throughout the audio.
Leighton finds herself taking care of 3 young children after suffering an incredible loss. Hayes being her best friend’s brother- finds himself doing everything that he can to help her and the kids. He starts spending more and more time with them and both Leighton and Hayes realize they are completely drawn to one another. Then when Hayes says they are in a relationship in order to help Leighton secure custody of the children, something that started as “fake” turns into something completely real.
Finding out that book 2 is Callie’s book and it’s one night stand/ secret pregnancy makes me so excited! 🤭🤭🤭

Thank you so much Piper Rayne and VPR for the arc & alc!
Thank you to Piper Rayne and Valentine PR for the ARC. I’m grateful for the opportunity to read and share my honest thoughts ahead of its release day of February 17!
This one started off very strong. I absolutely loved the idea of the story following Leighton as she stepped into guardianship of her nieces and nephews, it immediately pulled me in. Adding the fake dating trope on top of that? I was all in. I found myself really rooting for both Leighton and Hayes.
However, once they were honest about their feelings, the story lost a bit of momentum for me. The guardianship storyline felt somewhat rushed toward the end and the romance leaned more heavily on physical attraction rather than emotional development. While there were definitely cute and engaging moments, I found myself wishing for a deeper connection and more details on how they supported each other.
Overall, this was a good read with a strong beginning. While it didn’t fully deliver on the emotional depth I was hoping for, it was a solid start to the series. The next one definitely sounds like it would be a fun read for those who enjoy a sports romance mixed with some spicy moments.
I absolutely LOVED this book! Cue all the emotions 🥹😭😍
Fake dating Baseball Romance Best friends brother Single guardian
🎤And can we talk about the AUDIO?!? Have you seen that lineup: 🎧JF Harding & CJ Bloom!! Also featuring: 🎧TEDDY freaking HAMILTON, Sean Masters, CONNOR CRAIS (my absolute faveeeeee: I’d listen to that man read an article about the Civil War and never get tired of it 🥵), Erin Mallon, Willa Jaymes, Meg Sylvan, and Austin Stone!! Like are you kidding me?!? An ELITE audio lineup for the win!
And let me tell you, they absolutely delivered!! 🩷
I’m dying to get my hands on the physical copy ASAP! I’m in love!
Thank you Piper Rayne and Hambright PR for this ALC/ARC immersion! This book was exactly what I needed in my life!
Thank you Piper Rayne and Hambright PR for the eARC and ALC! 4.5⭐️ 2🌶️ [releasing February 17) I love this world Rayne created so much. I recently finished reading her series The Nest, so it was so fun to read about the next dudes…the colts! I love a best friend’s brother romance. Especially when it’s somewhat of a second chance romance. But above all, I’m a faking dating lover til the day I die, so that’s what made it a home run for me! All the side characters were so fun. And the kids really tugged at my heartstrings. Stoked for the next book in the series! Also. Shoutout to the narrators, they really sold it for me!
What to expect: Baseball romance Fake dating Best friend’s brother He falls first Single guardian Close proximity
4.5 stars - The Hotshot is easily in my top 3 favorite books by Piper Rayne! I loved not only the dynamic between Leighton and Hayes, but each of their connections with the three kids she has guardianship of.
I got the biggest kick out of his teammates going along on adventures with the children, whether he wants them to or not. They all have such kind hearts and are willing to go the extra mile, especially to fullfil a little girls wish to celebrate every National Day on the calendar.
I adore a fully narrated cast, as it creates a movie playing in my mind while listening, and I didn't want this one to end. So many terrific talents in one story, beautifully brought each page to life.
Book Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. Ahhhhh I loved this audio! While it is a sports Romance, it is so much more. When Leighton’s cousin dies, she is responsible for 3 kids. Hayes is a professional baseball player who needs a clean image. Fake dating solves the problems right? This book is cute, full of heart and spicy. Definitely recommend it. #bookstagram #alc #piperrayne #thehotshot
Proof that fake dating always becomes real feelings ♥️
5 ⭐️ | 3.75 🌶️
Piper Rayne are officially stepping up to the plate with The Hotshot, and consider me fully obsessed.
I went into this already trusting their storytelling after loving Plain Daisy Ranch, but this? This is Piper Rayne in a new era: sporty, emotional, and achingly human. Baseball romance meets found family and it hits straight to the heart.
Leighton is a 30-year-old labor and delivery nurse whose quiet, carefully planned life explodes overnight when she becomes the legal guardian of her cousin’s three children. Grief, responsibility, court hearings, homework that feels like advanced calculus; she takes it all on without hesitation, because love doesn’t ask permission. Watching her step into motherhood by circumstance is raw, grounding and deeply moving.
And then there’s Hayes Carlisle. Pro baseball catcher. Golden boy. Best friend’s older brother. The man behind that kiss years ago: the one that never really went away.
Hayes is everything you want in a book boyfriend: steady, patient, emotionally available and completely undone by the woman who once ran from him. His support of Leighton is quiet but constant, and the way he shows up (for her and the kids) had my heart in a chokehold. The fake relationship trope is handled beautifully here, not as a gimmick but as a natural extension of two people already halfway in love.
This is a true slow burn; the kind that simmers, teases and then absolutely combusts. Their chemistry sizzles, the emotional intimacy cuts deep, and when the sparks finally fly ✨? Total wildfire 🔥.
What really sets The Hotshot apart is its soul. This story is about chosen family, about love showing up in messy, imperfect ways and about letting yourself want more; even when life feels too full already. It’s tender, sexy, emotional, and incredibly grounding all at once.
I devoured this in a single day and immediately wanted more.
Huge thank you to Valentine PR for the ARC and ALC. And congratulations to Piper Rayne on this release (February 17th). I am already counting down the days until Callie’s story, because if The Dugout series continues like this, we are in for something special.
Now excuse me while I go think about Hayes Carlisle again.
Okay, so I absolutely devoured this. I was lucky enough to receive not only am ARC, but an ALC as well and when I tell you that I locked in... I LOCKED IN.
I love Leighton with my whole heart. Her world was flipped upside down overnight. She became an instant mom to her three cousins. As a single woman she was in no way prepared to take on the roll of guardian to three children that lost both of their parents. But Leighton stepped up, and she did it with determination. Her relationship with Lake, Monroe, and Linc was admirable. You could tell that she truly loved those kids with her whole heart. And her love shine through them.
And Leighton's mom burnout.... I FELT that sis.
Now, Hayes. Leighton's best friend's older brother. Mr. Off limits. Mr. Hotshot himself. Full time pro baseball player, part time Manny. I cannot say enough.good things about this man. A man that has been secretly pining for his little sister's best friend for years. A man that has no relation to the children, and still shiws up and shows out for them. A man that had the worst year of his life and is now working to rebuild his image and career. I could never hate Hayes. He is an angel of a man and he deserves all the good in this world.
I love Piper Rayne, and their writing. I absolutely loved the Plain Daisy Ranch series, I can't say enough good things about it. But they're going to steal hearts with The Dugout series, and I am ready for it! I can't wait for book two!!
This book centers on Leighton and Hayes. Leighton recently became the guardian of her late cousins 3 children. Although she feels a little overwhelmed with this new life she’s trying to find a steady routine for her and the kids while also working full time as a labor and delivery nurse when her longtime best friend Callie recruits her brother ( Hayes ) to step in and help while she’s out of town working and can’t be there herself. Little does Callie know Hayes & Leighton have a past together even though it was a short one it’s still in both of their minds.
Hayes is a professional catcher for The Colts baseball team and trying to improve his image from the disaster of the previous year. They both decide to put all those feelings aside and help each other. As always life or shall I say LOVE throws them a curve ball. Their connection and desire builds into a sweet and spicy love story filled with mixing personal growth and so many swoon worthy moments.
The banter between Leighton and Hayes is playful, flirty, and natural. I absolutely loved the side characters as well and cannot wait for the rest of the series.
If you enjoy a feel good romance, with lovable characters and a story that’s easy to sink into after a long day then I highly recommend you to add The Hotshot to your TBR. And just let me add that the audio is phenomenal. It’s performed in Duet Narration by JF Harding & CJ Bloom. Also featuring Teddy Hamilton, Sean Masters, Connor Crais, Erin Mallon, Willa Jaymes, Meg Sylvan, and Austin Stone.
I want to thank Piper Rayne and Hambright PR for the advance reader and advance listener copy.
🏥 Labor and delivery nurse ⚾ Baseball player 👧🏻 Single guardian of 3 ♥️ Best friends brother 🍭 Takes a village
This story follows a labor and delivery nurse who unexpectedly takes on a guardian role of three child. With no children of her own this is a challenging task.
Hayes a baseball player for the colts, the best friends brother, the man with a party wild life style past.
When leightons guardianship capabilities are being challenged by other family members both Hayes and Leighton agree to a fake dating relationship to show how good on paper Leighton is for raising her cousins children. The only problem is the relationship wasn't fake year prior and it isn't fake now .....
Okay so find me a single woman who wouldn't swoon over a man taking their niece to get her nails done, working on homework all while helping these children grieve because I'm sold! Slap in a baseball uniform and I'm DONE!
I absolutely loved this story. I'm new to the sports romance world but after this I'm going to need a bout 50 more
This book releases February 17th
Thank you so much HambrightPR and Piper Rayne for this arc opportunity. This is my honest review. ♥️⚾

I am just LOVING this era of Piper Rayne! There’s nothing better than a good sports romance with an incredible plot. The characters are just perfection. Hayes and Leighton’s story is definitely worth the read.
In this story, we follow Leighton who is navigating her new role as guardian of her cousins three children. She goes through so many challenges trying to make things work but always has others best interests at heart. Enter Hayes, her best friend’s brother and star catcher of the Chicago Colts. The guy she’s had a thing for since they were younger. Hayes will do anything to help Leighton.
I truly loved these characters and their relationship and I think everyone should read it immediately!
This book is perfect for readers who love: * Best Friends Brother * Sports Romance * Single Guardian * Fake Relationships * Forced Proximity
Overall, this book was absolutely adorable. I am giving it 4 stars and would definitely recommend it.
OH MY GOODNESS🥹 This was so sweet and so needed. The tropes all meshed together were top tier.
We have Leighton who loses her cousins tragically and in the same day become a parent to 3😭 Having to grieve your loved ones but also immediately become a parent to 3 children who don't know whats going on made my heart hurt. Then comes in Hayes that becomes like a second guardian automatically 🥹 The way this man stepped up!!! A WHOLE MAN.
I loved the silly little moments added in to make you giggle but also tear up moments later😭
The YEARNING!! We love a man that yearns and Hayes was such a softie. waiting for his woman to open up and heal🥹
I absolutely loved the chemistry these two had💘 The sparks were on fire and had me blushing 🤭
Thank you vpr and Piper for this earc in exchange for an honest review 💘

Leighton has recently gained guardianship of her cousin’s 3 children after her death. While starting to get into a routine with the kids, Leighton finds out their uncle is contesting the guardianship.
Hayes is Leighton’s best friend’s brother and her crush for years. He’s also a pro baseball player. She stays away because she thinks he’ll break her heart. When Hayes starts showing up to help with the kids, he becomes the support Leighton needs. When the trial suggests Leighton isn’t fit to be the guardian because she’s single, Hayes swoops in as her fake boyfriend.
It’s a really sweet story of healing and love! With some spice and baseball too! ⚾️
Best friend’s brother was honestly more than enough to get me to read this. But add Forced Proximity and Fake Relationship? I was practically vibrating with excitement.
The Hotshot felt warm, cozy, and wholesome… while still managing to be sexy as sin. And let me be clear: nothing that comes out of Hayes’ mouth is cozy or wholesome. Respectfully.
The chemistry was insane. The tension? Delicious. And it was elevated even more by the duet audiobook. Some of the most incredible narrators I’ve ever listened to. This wasn’t just an audiobook, it was a full production. Absolute brava.
The side characters genuinely made me giddy. I’m already hoping a few of them get their own interconnected stories because I will be first in line. I cannot wait to follow the rest of their journeys.
A new Piper Rayne series? Sign me up immediately!! Per usual, I had an absolute blast with this. I went in blind thinking this would be a cutesy baseball romance, and boy was I wrong…it was SO much more. The depth of this plot, with Leighton unexpectedly having to gain custody of her cousin’s 3 children after such a tragedy really pulled on my heartstrings. The way Hayes stepped in without question to help out? THAT is what sealed the deal. This was such a good audio, too. So easy to listen along to. I need a follow up on the kids asap!! Thank you to Hambright PR for sending me an advanced ALC ❤️
This was such a fun audiobook because of the full cast. That was a treat for my ears. This story starts off with a tragedy, but the resilience really shown with all the characters involved. I enjoyed seeing the growth from Leighton, and how Hayes helped her without any hesitation. I cannot wait to see what the next site has in store for us because that epilogue was insane!! I have theories, and I hope I'm right.
Thank you Valentine PR and Piper Rayne for the opportunity to read this early. This was my honest review
A heartfelt sports romance that hits the feels without being too heavy, perfect if you love found family and slow-burn longing.
We start off with grief, baseball, found family, and fake dating, all wrapped up with a lovable best friend and a he’s-always-loved-her romance. This story had so much heart. I listened to the audiobook, and wow… the full-cast narration was absolutely incredible and truly brought every moment to life.
ALC Review ⚾️🩷 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ • This was my first time reading something written by Piper Rayne and I am blown away! I couldn’t have loved The Hotshot more! The audio especially was done SO well + so many of the most popular narrators were apart of this one!! 😍 • Leighton + Hayes totally have my heart. I LOVE the baseball setting, the bond between the players, Callie and Leightons friendship! This book also has just the right amount of smut, not too much but just enough 🔥 I’ll be signing up for every ALC in this series because I’m literally obsessed!!! And the cliffhanger at the end of The Hotshot has me DYING that we have to wait until April!!! Thanks for this ALC, I loved it so much 🫶🏼🎀
I thought, for sure there was no way this book would keep me out of a reading slump, and I was so wrong! I laughed, went back and reread some of it, and had so many emotions throughout the entire book. I cannot recommend it enough. I’m so excited to hear about all of the other players and how their stories will unfold, I am completely obsessed. New book boyfriend acquired.
I absolutely loved this book! That ending! I absolutely loved how he was so worried about making sure she was taken care of. That calendar, it just made this book so much more perfect! I absolutely loved it.
