A shaman can serve as a healer, storyteller, and a keeper of wisdom—but most of all, teaches Sandra Ingerman, “Shamans radiate a light that uplifts everybody. In our culture, we tend to focus on methods and forget that the greatest way we can offer healing to the world is to become a vessel of love.” With Walking in Light, this renowned teacher offers a complete guide for living in a shamanic way—empowered by purpose, focus, and a deep connection to the spiritual dimensions.“Shamanism remains so relevant because it continues to evolve to meet the needs of the times and culture,” teaches Sandra. Most importantly, Sandra Ingerman illuminates the meaning behind the practices—revealing our universe as a place where spirit is the ultimate reality, where our intentions shape our world, and where unseen allies support us on every step of our journey.
This book was a gem. it added so much quality to my spiritual path. My attunement to nature was heightened, my spiritual practice, expanded. Sandra gently guides the reader through simple yet empowering exercises, or ceremonies, to connect with spirit animals, the light within us, the elemental word, the hidden realms. Brief meditations are included, journey prompts, client experiences, and powerful quotes to carry and go to throughout the day. My favorite being, "what you feed, grows". Wherever you are on your spiritual path, this book will open your mind and expand it.
I picked this up intrigued about what a 'shaman' might look like in a modern context, and how someone might identify as a 'shaman'. I found the descriptions and exercises in the book a bit vague and containing a lot of magical-thinking, but did learn some things about modern shamanic practices around nature and stewardship.
I found this one a bit hard to rate. I have found a lot of interesting exercises in this book, which I can return to again later. Things that really spoke to me and that I think can really help the reader live a fulfilling life that is not only good for them but also for the people around them. And then there is this part of me that never stops using my critical thinking. Some things were just a little to far fetched for me. Maybe I could see use for those parts as beautiful concepts, taken figuratively instead of literally. All in all, I liked this book. It felt comforting and motivating. I am still curious about her other books that are patiently waiting on my shelves for many years now.
Walking In Light may well be a good primer to shamanism. It has many exercises, which add depth to the book. Though obviously they will make the book longer to complete.
There are other good books on shamanism. For example, by Jose Stevens, or Alberto Villoldo.
If you are a beginner, probably the most important aspect of shamanism is soul retrieval, which is beyond the scope of this review. Google.
