Penelope Sinclair returns home, but it is not the homecoming she expected.
The wards are broken. The Council is waiting. And the moment her magic stirs, everyone in the room goes still like they have been fearing this for years.
They call her marked. They call her dangerous. They assign a fox Guardian to her side and expect her to obey.
Penelope has never been good at obedience.
Especially not when no one will tell her what went wrong, what woke inside her, or why the world suddenly seems to be holding its breath.
Something is working behind the scenes. And it already knows her name.
This was so good for a debut novel! I was entranced from the very first page and loved every second of it. It did get a little slow in some places, but the characters and the plot brought me right back into the story.
Mingxi was to die for and Poppy was just adorable. I won't spoil it, but there are some of the best sister characters ive read in this one! Absolutely great character lines and writing was well done.
I would say my favorite aspect was the elements of Chinese mythology, language, and culture. I really enjoyed seeing something that we don't typically see in popular books and I hope more people will do things like this! A great first novel and I'm excited to read more!!

I enjoyed this book and thought it was a great debut novel. The writing was descriptive and rich, the characters weee interesting and diverse. I felt it was a more unique read than so many other books out there (that feel the same old story and a struggle to finish.) I enjoyed finishing this book and I look forward to reading more by this author.
