Henry James was an American-British author. He is regarded as a key transitional figure between literary realism and literary modernism, and is considered by many to be among the greatest novelists in the English language. He was the son of Henry James Sr. and the brother of philosopher and psychologist William James and diarist Alice James.
He is best known for his novels dealing with the social and marital interplay between émigré Americans, the English, and continental Europeans, such as The Portrait of a Lady. His later works, such as The Ambassadors, The Wings of the Dove and The Golden Bowl were increasingly experimental. In describing the internal states of mind and social dynamics of his characters, James often wrote in a style in which ambiguous or contradictory motives and impressions were overlaid or juxtaposed in the discussion of a character's psyche. For their unique ambiguity, as well as for other aspects of their composition, his late works have been compared to Impressionist painting.
His novella The Turn of the Screw has garnered a reputation as the most analysed and ambiguous ghost story in the English language and remains his most widely adapted work in other media. He wrote other highly regarded ghost stories, such as "The Jolly Corner".
James published articles and books of criticism, travel, biography, autobiography, and plays. Born in the United States, James largely relocated to Europe as a young man, and eventually settled in England, becoming a British citizen in 1915, a year before his death. James was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911, 1912, and 1916. Jorge Luis Borges said "I have visited some literatures of East and West; I have compiled an encyclopedic compendium of fantastic literature; I have translated Kafka, Melville, and Bloy; I know of no stranger work than that of Henry James."

Não sei o que significa isso de arte francesa e arte inglesa e arte americana: parecem-me meras designações para catalogadores e críticos e negociantes, representando preocupações inteiramente alheias ao artista. Arte é arte em qualquer país, e um romance é um romance em qualquer língua, e já é bastante difícil estar à altura deste privilégio para ainda complicarmos mais o problema. O leitor, o consumidor, pode chamar o que quiser às coisas, mas deixemos esses pequenos divertimentos para ele.

Deixando, desta vez, de lado a fricção entre norte-americanos e europeus, Henry James coloca o seu protagonista em Paris, como anfitrião de uns serões multiculturais, onde o antagonismo se foca antes noutras nacionalidades também tradicionalmente desavindas. Na casa deste pintor, reúnem-se, entre outros, Madame de Brindes e a sua filha, Paule, noiva de um poeta inglês, Felix Vendemer, o qual, ao escutar o alemão Herman Heidenmauer a tocar piano, fica profundamente impressionado com o seu talento. Desta cumplicidade imediata, nasce a ideia da colaboração para uma ópera.
Dessa opinião, porém, não partilha a senhora francesa, viúva de um militar morto na Guerra Franco-Prussa, que faz um ultimato ao seu futuro genro.

Marie de Brindes nunca poderia falar com Herman Heidenmauer. Era uma limitação de espírito, se quiserem, mas uma limitação que a meu ver estava envolta por uma densa atmosfera – uma espécie de perfeição em declínio – de coisas enriquecedoras e fortificantes. O próprio Herman Heidenmauer, como homem imaginativo e amante da vida que era, teria entrado nessa atmosfera com prazer e ficado encantado com ela enquanto exemplo requintado de tacanhez.

É admirável a modernidade e abertura de espírito de Henry James neste conto, abordando um tema que nunca deixou de ser actual: o chauvinismo que atiça as pessoas umas contra as outras e o papel unificador que a arte deve sempre ter ao manter-se acima da mesquinhez dos nacionalismos.

قصة تحمل فكرة فوقية الفن على الانتماءات الوطنية و السياسية ، ولأن مهمة القصة تجسيد الفكرة لا عرضها جاءت هذه القصة فجة
وقد قيل من يحسن فن الرواية قد يصعب عليه فن القصة القصيرة .. وهنري جيمس مثال جيد .
