Halifax Hellions #1-2

The Halifax Hellions

Rate this book
From USA Today bestselling author Alexandra Vasti comes The Halifax a pair of sexy, hilarious romps in which the most scandalous ladies in London finally meet their match.

From the day of their debut, when Matilda smoked a cheroot and Margo tied a cherry stem in a knot with her tongue, the Halifax twins have flouted convention at every turn. But when Matilda runs off with the dangerous Marquess of Ashford—who has every reason to hate her—she may have gone a bit too far.

Determined to stop Matilda’s inexplicable elopement, her sister Margo turns to her oldest friend for because if anyone can get her to Scotland in time, it’s starchy solicitor Henry Mortimer. But the road to Scotland is paved with secrets. Beneath his buttoned-up exterior, Henry is ardently, wildly, miserably in love with Margo. And Matilda and Ashford’s relationship too may not be quite what it seems.

Between salacious engravings, secret identities, and demanding feral cats, nothing about the journey goes as planned. With the Halifax Hellions at the reins, a week in a carriage is exactly enough time to turn the world upside down . . . and, perhaps, find the love stories they never expected.

For the first time ever in print, The Halifax Hellions brings together Margo and Matilda’s novellas, along with a swoony new epilogue.

Nope.
Not for me.
Way too spicy (I should've read more reviews, for heaven's sake, so I take full responsibility for this being a miss), I didn't care about the characters at all, and the plot? We don't know her.
But I think that's the point. This is just something you read when you want a quick, sexy, and spicy read. So clearly I am not the target audience, lol! 😂
Oh goodness, why do I do this to myself? This one's on me, chat. I promise I won't do this again. 😅🤦‍♀️
But I'm glad other people enjoyed it, though. I wish I was one of them, but unfortunately, we can't love them all. 💚

This was absolutely DELIGHTFUL. And way spicier than I imagined (in a good way)! I am fully obsessed with Alexandra Vasti now and will join her cult when she starts it. This book is two books in one. The two FMCs are twins and the first third is a novella for Margo and Henry and the other two thirds are a novella for Matilda and Christian.

You will probably like this book if you like:
🐴 Two historical romances in one book (each a novella)
🐴 The FMCs are twin hellions
🐴 The MMCs are brooding
🐴 Double the forced proximity with a road trip each
🐴 Oops there’s only one bed (x2) and only one horse (x1)

First, Margo and Henry. Margo is convinced that her sister Matilda is running off to marry a dangerous man so she asks the only person who can help her, her brother’s best friend, Henry, who has been pining for her for seven years, to go with her to catch Matilda. The tropes in this one are: brother’s best friend, “it’s always been you,” forced proximity, only one horse, and bed, and he’s always been obsessed with her. Matilda is chaos and sunshine and Henry is prim and proper, so they make for a “great opposites attract” combo. Selfishly, my only wish with this story was that it was a bit longer because it felt like the “he’s been obsessed with her for seven years” did a lot of the heavy lifting in the beginning and then everything moved very quickly. But also things always move pretty quickly in historical romances and this is a novella so I will let it slide because I just really liked these two silly kids together. It was also super fun to read the next part from Matilda’s POV to see what was actually happening.

Then we have Matilda and Christian. Matilda has been secretly drawing pictures for a salacious pamphlet for years and she never thought that anyone would figure out that her inspiration is Christian. You see, it is rumored that Christian has the same proclivities as Matilda and she just cannot stop fantasizing about him, but Christian does find out and he is NOT pleased. They have to go on a road trip together for reasons that would spoil things. The tropes are: age gap, grumpy x sunshine, only one bed, they send letters to each other, and some light BDSM. I absolutely LOVED Matilda and Christian together. It was exceptionally impressive what the author was able to do with their relationship in a novella. I literally could not put this part of the book down and stayed up way too late reading this.

Also, I loved Margo and Matilda. They are mischievous and rambunctious and kind-hearted and tender. They are not hellions for hellions’ sake but because they don’t want to play by the rules of a rigged game (FUCK THE PATRIARCHY BABES). Yes, they are chaotic (Margo more so than Matilda) but that is part of their charm. Matilda, especially had my heart with her older sister vibes (which lolol, they are twins but you get what I mean). I, so deeply, rooted for them.

I have been searching for a historical romance to be obsessed with and I have found it. Alexandra Vasti is now an auto-read, auto-buy, auto-everything author for me.

Thank you St. Martin's Press | St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley for providing this eARC! All opinions are my own.

**ARC of this book provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review**

When I entered the giveaway of this book I completely missed the fact that this book consist of two novellas instead of one full-length romance. For the first 100 pages we are following Margo Halifax and her courtship with her brothers best friend and the other 200 pages follow story of Matilda Halifax and her romance with 13-years older Marquess of Ashford.

I am of two minds when it comes to this book. On one hand those are perfectly fine novellas with likable characters, snappy dialogue and fast pace of events. On the other hand, due to the short format, I feel like they did not reach their full potential. There is minimal buildup before love is being consumed and because of that it feels like love sprouts from lust and not the other way around. But then again - isn't it a mark of skillful author to be able to tell an engaging story in the limited number of pages? What's more, there are few difficult things in those novellas that author pulls off almost effortlessly - the age gap romance doesn't feel creepy and the manic pixie dream girl personality of Margo is done just right. On the other hand there is a BDSM content warning that in my opinion is exaggerated and misleading and both male leads sometimes feel like the same person (constant pinching of the bridge of the nose!).

I guess bottom line here is what you are looking for - if you are after stories with yearning then you should skip this book, but if you are after a quick, steamy romance to entertain you for few hours or get you out of the reading slump then The Halifax Hellions is perfect for you.

One Liner: Mindless fun

Matilda and Margo, the Halifax twins, had flouted convention since their debut. However, when Matilda runs off with the dangerous Marquess of Ashford, her twin sister Margo is determined to stop it. She turns to her oldest friend, a starchy solicitor, Henry Mortimer. As they race across Scotland, the twins have a range of adventures and might just find their HEAs, too!

This is a collection of two novellas with an overlapping timeline.

The stories come in the respective MCs’ third-person POVs.

Firstly, the book is not a novel as such. It is two novellas stitched together. We get Margo’s story and then Matilda’s, which makes sense once you read the latter.

Secondly, the novellas have a barely-there plot and a lot of smutty thoughts+smut. So, if you are looking for some serious plot and character development, forget it. This is fluffy spice, where some of it doesn’t seem to suit the time, but then not many novels in this genre do that anyway!

Now that we have established what to expect, let’s go into the other details.

Some of it is quite funny if you don’t take things seriously. At the same time, there can be a couple of triggers (listed in advance, appreciate this), though there is no detail.

The pacing is uneven and rather slow in Margo’s story. I didn’t expect that! Still, it wasn’t too bad that I got bored. I did enjoy the stories to an extent by forgetting logic and all that. They are meant to be silly. Just remember that.

There is a combined epilogue at the end to tie up everything with more antics and HEA. In the author’s note, she says the brother also has a story. Hmm… have to see if I can find it!

To summarize, The Halifax Hellions is a fun romp if you don’t demand a proper plot and character development. Enjoy it for what it is.

Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

I'm not quite sure just what these novellas are. New-Adult or maybe New Adult Historical Romance? Whatever it is it ain't anything like the works of Eloisa James or Lisa Kleypus (two of the best to write in the Historical Romance genre). Vasti doesn't even attempt to throw any history into her work. The books could be set right now with few alterations. London, for sure, had its seamy side and there were shocking men and women in 1821. Sexual mores and the role of women are challenged here and that is fine, but not my cuppa. The Halifax Hellions, twins Margo and Matilda, don't even try to toe societies line. They are scandalous and outrageous while staying just on the line of respectable. What we get here is a lot of sex and a bit of plot.

In Which Margo Halifax Earns Her Shocking Reputation
Margo Halifax and her twin Matilda are high-spirited, free-thinking women who do pretty much as they please. Both have decided that reputations were burdensome things they would not care a fig about. When Matilda starts keeping company with a notorious Marquess and actually runs away with him, Margo is determined as a caring sister to stop her. Margo cannot fathom why Matilda could possibly want to marry someone with a dangerous reputation. To find and stop her Margo has asked her brother's best friend straightlaced solicitor Henry Mortimer to go with her to Scotland to stop the marriage.

Henry has had a secret love for Margo since her coming out seven years ago. He has watched her scandalous behavior and even saved her a time or two but never declared himself. As the son of a pipefitter he felt too far beneath her to he noticed. Now in the close confines of a carriage, he is enduring an agony beyond belief and when the carriage crashes and Henry and Margo are stranded in a small, cozy cottage, well, Margo finally sees that Henry has been there all the time.

In Which Matilda Halifax Learns the Value of Restraint
Christian de Bord, Marquess of Ashford, has avoided the London social scene for twelve years, since the scandalous death of his wife and unsavory rumors about him personally started to circulate. But when erotic drawings of him start to circulate he is determined to track down the artist. He doesn't care for himself so much, but this new scandal is affecting his eighteen-year-old sister who is set to make her debut next year.

Matilda Halifax and her sister, Margo, have lived their lives their way for the last seven years shine their debut. Matilda is an artist with a talent for erotic drawings and the pamphlet with her work has caused Lord Ashford a lot of distress since the subject looks exactly like him. Having never met the man, but only knowing him by reputation, the depictions are eerily spot on.

Although Matilda is not directly responsible for the drawings striking resemblance to the Marquess, she feels responsible for the damage to his sister and wants to help. Faking their elopement, while not the best of ideas, takes attention off the erotic pamphlet. But it does nothing but ramp up the sexual tension and scorching erotic passion between Matilda and Christian.

My thanks to the Publisher, and Author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.

In Which Margo Halifax Earns Her Shocking Reputation
A fun historical romp on the road to Scotland! When the scandalous Margo Halifax needs help in chasing her twin sister to Scotland, she begs her brother's best friend, Henry Mortimer. Henry of course has been in love with Margo for years but never said anything, because as the son of a pipe fitter he believes himself unfit for the sister of an earl.

I enjoyed this was- it was fun, fast paced and packed some heat. I think Alexandra Vasti did a good job in giving us the jist of Margo and Henry's past relationship. We're given brief mentions of them over the years, told that they talked and interacted and given some stories. And it such a short story it was the perfect amount

In Which Matilda Halifax Learns the Value of Restraint
I didn't check the actual page count but I felt like Matilda's story was longer here- and thus felt more fleshed out. Where Margo and Henry's story was more secluded because they were on the road to Scotland alone, with Matilda and Christian come some supporting characters.

Matilda meets Christian after lewd etchings she had done are altered to look like him- his sister's art tutor quits and he's angry enough to confront Matilda. The two strike up a slightly reluctant correspondence that ends with Matilda accompanying Christian to Scotland to take over as his sister Bea's painting instructor.

This was also fun! We got the gloomy Scottish castle, a brooding lord and a moody cat. What's not to love?

The Halifax Hellions by Alexandra Vasti
Historical romance novellas.
The Halifax twins, proper society young ladies decided to rebel against society rules telling them what they couldn’t do. That was seven years ago and their behavior and antics have been written in all the scandal sheets since then. And they are totally fine with that.

Novella 1
In Which Margo Halifax Earns Her Shocking Reputation.
While used to scandal, Margo is shocked when her sister runs off with an older man to Scotland. Apparently to get married! Margo is determined to stop Matilda from making a permanent mistake that can’t be fixed so she begs help from her brother’s best friend, solicitor Henry Mortimer. He claims he can’t get away from work but he can’t actually resist her plea. He’s been in love with Margo since her debut so, of course, they end up in a carriage together, chasing after her sister. Those close confines together plus lots of hours together takes a toll on Henry. He’s ready to kiss her speechless and proclaim his love. Whether they catch up to her sister or not.

Novella 2
In Which Matilda Halifax Learns the Value of Restraint
Christian de Bord hates being in the public eye since his first wife couldn’t handle their married life. Rumors have been persistent since she died. When he finds provocative drawings with his face and identifying marks, he blames Matilda Halifax. She, of course, denies doing the work. Partially. She claims it could be any man and he’s making too much out of it. She’s been interested in him since learning of certain proclivities he prefers that run parallel to her own interests. She makes up a story for her sisters so she can travel to his estate and teach his sister some painting techniques. Matilda is hoping being in his home, that she can persuade Christian to share more than just a little paint.

Two amusing and provocative romances where the women decide their own fate. Highly entertaining.

Happy Release Day!!

4.25 stars

This was such a delight. A lot of loveable characters and short and (somewhat) sweet stories.

But where was Spencer's novella? I looked at these after I finished and realized that there's a third one that wasn't included here?

But I love AV's writing, so engaging and entertaining 💚

I LOVED these two novellas from Vasti! This book combines the first two novellas in her Halifax Hellions series.

In Which Margo Halifax Earns Her Shocking Reputation

Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑🍑
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥
Humor: Yes! It’s delightful!
Perspective: Third person from both the hero and heroine

Basic plot:
Margo is on a mission to stop her twin from ruining her life, and convinces Henry to help her find them on the way to Gretna Green.

Give this a try if you want:
- Late Regency time period (around 1821)
- Mostly countryside setting on the way to Gretna Green
- Solicitor hero
- Unrequited love
- Brother’s best friend
- Delicious angst
- Opposites attract
- Hero loves first
- Novella length (goodreads has it about 90 pages)
- Virgin hero
- Road trip romance
- Left handed heroine!
- Bisexual heroine
- Medium steam – 2 full scenes within a short page count

Ages:
- Hero is 28 and heroine is 25

My thoughts:
Oh this novella was SUCH A DELIGHT! I really just fell right into it immediately and gobbled the whole thing up. Even being so short, I found it suffering from none of my complaints I sometimes have about shorter stories. It had humor! It had pining! It had angsty emotional pull that tugged my heart! All under 100 pages. It was amazing.

I am always a sucker for hero loves first and have really been loving unrequited love from the hero and it’s here in spades. Henry has loved Margo from afar for so long and seeing them come together really warmed my heart. Henry is a solicitor, a family friend, more stoic in personality, quiet. And Margo is the hurricane of chaos that has upended his life. I adored how opposite they were and how they came together so completely. The magnetic pull these two had had my heart singing and happy. And I still felt like we had a decent background on these characters even with it being so short. I just love them both so much.

Basic plot:
Christian de Bord has finally found who has been drawling salacious pictures of him for a society pamphlet and he is ready to make her pay.

Give this a try if you want:
- Late Regency time period (1821)
- widower Marquess hero
- artist heroine – who perhaps draws porn
- a small section of letters written to each other
- age gap/older hero – hero is 13 years older than the heroine
- vegetarian heroine and an animal lover (with some feline company on page!)
- bespectacled hero
- BEARDED HERO!! (Sorry I yelled. Its just been too long since I was able to say that)
- one bed at the inn
- Medium to high steam – 3 scenes within a shorter page count

Ages:
- Hero is 38, heroine is 25

My thoughts:
How can another book by Vasti be pure perfection???? I think I liked this one even MORE than the first book, and I didn’t think that was possible.

Vasti has quickly become one of my favorite authors. She has all my favorite things. There’s delicious angsty, emotional pull between the characters. There’s humor. There’s lovely character depth (and somehow she still does this in a novella! A novella!!). Steamy scenes that flare my insides on tug on my heart with their touching intimacy. Humor! It truly has been the absolute best of all the romance catnip for me. I am so in love!

Christian is one of my favorite types of heroes. He’s a bit dark. He has baggage from his past and is torn up inside with his wanting for Matilda, yet determined to stay away. The slow fall of the marquess was delicious.

Matilda was also a delight. I loved how she was trying to find herself and what she wanted in this life. I adored her strength and confidence and I LOVED that she’s a vegetarian (as a fellow vegetarian I never come across this in historical). I loved how sweet she was. I feel for Matilda just as Christian did.

It’s rare for me to reread books, but I couldn’t resist revisiting the Halifax Hellions when I learned that the first 2 novellas were being published together with an all new epilogue.

Margo’s story still checks all of my boxes - pining, brother’s best friend, forced proximity, and more. I love how the timeline overlaps with Matilda’s story and we’re able to see the same events from different perspectives. Speaking of Matilda, I did not remember how spicy her novella was. Well done Christian! *fans self*

Reading both novellas back to back and then the bonus epilogue was chef’s kiss. Getting that extra bit of the happy couples made my heart so full. I really hope we’ll be able to see Spencer and Winnie’s story in print as well!

I didn’t realize this book contained 2 novellas when I started it! Normally, I don’t gravitate towards them because I like longer books with more fleshed-out characters, but I ended up enjoying both sisters stories. Margo and Matilda don’t follow the “rules” of their times, and their shenanigans had me laughing out loud. Each sister also had a really sweet romance, and I was thrilled to spend time with them as they fell in love. If you’re a fan of regency romcoms then I recommend giving not only this book a try, but the authors’ other novels as well.

Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free Kindle book. My review is voluntarily given, and my opinions are my own.

This was my second book by Alexandra Vasti (technically, this is two novellas put in one book). I loved this so much ❤️; just as much as I loved Earl Crush. The novellas tell the love stories of two sisters, with much of the timeline overlapping. One is told from the point of view of Margo and the other one from Matilda's.

There is quite a bit of smut in the book. Not the most graphic smut I have ever read in a book, but it's pretty smutty. If you are looking for a clean historical romance, sorry, this isn't the right one for you.

Would definitely recommend it! I just need more time to read more books by this author.

Content Warnings: Consensual bdsm (nothing extremely graphic, spanking, some restraint, etc), references to past sexual assault, death of spouse

4.25⭐️ This was such a sweet and fun read! I’ve been wanting to read these novellas for a while now, and I’m so glad this was my first foray into Vasti’s writing.

Her writing flows so naturally with such a sharp wit and humor. Every character is distinct and lively and you love to root for them as the reader. These two stories are endearing - a perfect balance of humor and spice.

While fun and short reads, they still hold character depth and truly shine from the sex positivity at its core. And of course: Christian, the tortured hero = HOT.

I enjoyed Matilda’s novella a bit more, but it does have the advantage of being longer and thus more fleshed out of the two. Yet I loved how the sisters’ stories intertwined and worked together. I especially loved the development of the sisters’ relationship with each other. Because the characters are treated as full people, they learn a lot about themselves and their other relationships through the romance. The sisters were growing up and coming to terms with who they are and what they mean to each other. I always love when female relationships are depicted well in romance because it serves to make them feel so real.

I’m looking forward to reading more of the author’s backlist and her summer release!

if you go into this knowing it's two novellas packaged with an epilogue then you might enjoy it. the romance didn't live up to its potential because the smut is so overwhelming.

the first novella took me out immediately. it centers on the first of the Halifax twin sisters margo and her love interest henry. they've known each other for nearly a decade but we dont really get insight on that (cause it's a novella i guess) and then they're just immediately horndogs for the initial buildup.

like hello why do I care??? why aren't you trying to make me care about them individually and together first?

the second novella about matilda and christian is much better but is still lacking in any emotional depth tbh. it just felt so rushed and off pace.

overall, i liked the characters enough to continue but neither story lives up to its potential.

Omnibus that features one novella and a full length but short book about two twin sisters who never do what is expect of them.

Book one: This was cute but I thought it was going to be more fun. I was looking forward to the H and h getting into some hijinks while they looked for the sister but it fell flat for me in that area. I did think the romance was sweet though especially in the end when the h had to grand gesture the H and go after him. She was mostly focused on her twin the whole time and her reckless life changing so it was nice to see her have to fight for the H a bit.

Book two: This was is about 60 pages longer and the relationship was more developed. This was my favorite of the two. I liked how things played out here. The events of book one lead us to believe certain things about the h and Hs relationship and his reputation but things were not at all what they seemed. I had a lot of fun with that. I really liked the h in this one and how she just wanted to bring joy and happiness into the H and his sister’s lives.

Modern regency isn’t always my thing but the authors wit and writing style were a lot of fun to read. These were a lot steamier than I was expecting too.

What a treat! I liked Earl Crush by this author and enjoyed this sweet and steamy historical romance even more.

I loved both stories of the Halifax Hellions, twins in regency London who are no strangers to scandal. We follow their chaotic adventures as they learn about themselves, and find what they were looking for and more.

This was such an uplifting and fun read. It has charming and loveable characters, witty banter, yearning, great spice… To me, it was the perfect balance of heartwarming, funny and spicy. I was hooked from the start and loved every minute of it.

I am becoming a fan of Alexandra Vasti’s writing, and will be reading more of her books.

The Halifax Hellions is the bookish equivalent to a sweet and savory dessert buffet that satisfies all of your cravings. Each novella combines playful humor and delicious spice with complex characters you can’t help but love and root for, even the grumpy ones. It’s only been a handful of hours since I’ve finished this book, and I’ve already texted several friends to read it now. And you better believe I joined Vasti’s newsletter so that I could get my hands on the Halifax Holiday novella of everyone living their best lives. I also learned that Spencer has a novella, which I immediately downloaded, so here I go, happily skipping back into Halifax land!

Things I Loved:

General:
📰 The Adventures - Each sister had their own unique adventure to reflect their distinct personality, and both were highly entertaining in their own right.
📰 The Humor - Creative swearing, witty quips, and funny internal monologues aplenty.
📰 The Desire and Yearning - How Vasti built this so strongly in such a short amount of time baffled me and had my heart in a vice grip. Side note: Traveling carriages are apparently the breeding ground for fantasies.
📰 The Declarations - These people love each other, unapologetically, exactly for who the other is, and it was honestly beautiful. The story takes place like a century and a half before ONJ existed, but “Hopelessly Devoted To You” still applies.
📰 The Growth and Bond of the Halifax Sisters - Their process of finding themselves, learning to embrace their individual desires and identities and trust one another, was so satisfying.
📰 The Epilogue - The wholesomeness of it served as the cherry on top of the delectable sundae that was these novellas (pun intended).

🍒 Henry - Are you entirely certain, Henry? Because I don’t believe it either, but I give you a standing ovation. This once orderly and disciplined man was forever undone by a cherry, surely has a bruise on his nose from how often he pinches it, and is sorry, not sorry, and I loved that for him. Risk it all, my man!
🍒 Margo - She may be impatient, chaos incarnate, and fearful of being the rotten seed, but she came into her own, reaching both a “bollocks” and “blockhead” moment that served.

In Which Matilda Halifax Learns the Value of Restraint:
🐈 Matilda - An erotic artist mistaken for a milkmaid who is not that innocent (Oops!). She’s brave, strong, and just wants to make the people she loves happy.
🐈 Christian - This besotted grouch fears failing his loved ones but has so much love to give, even in the form of chocolate which I am on board with. And don’t even get me started on that starry arse.
🐈 Bea and Mrs. Perkins (Wink) - Such likable side characters who added to the characters’ journeys.

Mediocre, unfortunately. Pacing is a mess, kink is discussed in 21st century therapyspeak, deeply corny situations, overwhelmingly heterosexual in ways that verge on homophobic at times (oh, she innocently fumbled with other girls at school did she? Fucking spare me.) I was just bored the whole time, sorry!

The Halifax Hellions includes two novellas that follow sisters as they find their happily ever afters. Both stories are compelling, and I was easily pulled into the first, which focused on Margo and Henry as they travel to stop Matilda from eloping. I love friends-to-lovers romances and road trips, and when these characters embark on their journeys, chaos, shenanigans, obstacles, and romance ensue.

Margot is so over the top and vivacious, and it’s clear from the start that Henry is deeply in love with her. Did I mention Henry is also Margot’s brother’s best friend? Love it!! They had amazing chemistry, and the pining was fabulous.

Matilda’s novella had a completely different tone from her sister’s, which made sense considering how different her story is from Margot’s. I enjoyed hers just as much as the first one. I actually liked Matilda a bit more than Margot, and Christian surprised me in the best way. He ended up being so different from his cold and standoffish persona, and once they were at his home, he shone. He was such a strong match for her and their dynamic pulled me in right away. I also loved Matilda’s budding relationship with Christian’s sister. There are definitely some strong messages about female empowerment and sisterhood in both pieces.

Special thanks to St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

It was quick and steamy but it felt like a 21st century story but with corsets. It felt too forced.

The Halifax Twins now come bundled as an omnibus complete with all new combined epilogue for the print version. What a wonderful world we live in.

In Which Margo Halifax Earns Her Shocking Reputation
Margo Halifax knows how to shock people. She and her twin sister Matilda have been doing it their whole lives, in fact, seeing how far they can throw convention to the wind. But when she finds a note from Matilda saying that she’s eloped with *gasp* the scandalous Lord Ashford (with some sort of rumors about a riding crop being involved), Margo takes it upon herself to rescue Matilda from certain ruin with the help of her brother’s best friend Henry Mortimer. Henry has been in love with Margo for seven years, since he first watched her tie a cherry stem in a knot with her tongue as a party trick, and her brazen ways have been a light in his world. Of course he can never tell her this. But the forced proximity of a road trip and a broken carriage throw all of his carefully buttoned up feelings amiss.

This is a reread for me, but I will always give more love to the Halifax siblings. Margo is bold and brash, often making decisions before thinking through them. Henry is the epitome of the starchy hero: quiet, unassuming, and buttoned all the way up, but also a deeply caring and passionate man who would in fact drop everything to assist his unrequited love to find her sister.

One of the delights of this being a novella is that we are never bogged down by extraneous road trip stops or mishaps. It’s quite literally the perfectly balanced arc of plot and character development and extremely passionate sex. A year and a half after first reading Alexandra Vasti, I’m still in awe of how she crafts these outstanding novellas with such care.

In Which Matilda Halifax Learns the Value of Restraint
Matilda Halifax, twin sister to Margo and the other half of the Halifax Hellions, has crossed her own scandalous line. We knew from Margo’s book that Matilda has eloped, but Vasti brings depth and passion to Matilda’s backstory, which is nothing at all like what Margo assumes.

For years, Margo and Matilda have pulled every scandalous stunt, and yet guarded their hearts. But Matilda doesn’t even recognize herself as the girl who appears in the broadsheets. Yes, she’s been caught by Christian de Bord, Marquess of Ashford, for drawing - and publishing a depiction of him in Professor Flagellante’s Naughty Pupil - but she neither meant for it to be him (the publisher filled in some naughtier details), or assumed that he’d ever see it. In exchange for her indiscretion, she pleads with him to allow her to tutor his sister in painting. But even Christian, assuming nothing short of a scandal, is appalled when Matilda informs him she’s left a note telling her sister she’s eloped because that will keep everything quieter.

There is an underappreciated art to writing a novella because the writer must use an economy of prose and a short plot arc to develop their characters, and Vasti delivers. Her prose is both comfortable and sensual, and she writes incredible characters through the course of this short book. Somehow Christian is starchy, wounded, and devastating, and while Matilda is not his opposite, she’s a perfect counter-balance emotionally. I am not usually one for age-gap romances, either, but that’s because I don’t love the power it typically gives on character over the other, but with Matilda’s fortitude it's clear she holds all the cards, even when Christian is the dominant in the bedroom.

This book is a compilation of two novellas that happen concurrently, tied up in the bow of a lovely new epilogue that revisits and solidifies the two HEAs. Margo and Matilda are twins, and have been flaunting society's rules in the seven years since their debut. They are both at a point in their lives where they are tiring of the Hellion label, and wondering what's next, and how much their reputations will affect the rest of their lives. Our stories kick off when Matilda leaves on a journey and Margo follows.

Margo meddled in Matilda's business, and is trying to fix things by chasing her to Scotland before she can elope (so she thinks) with a nobleman with a sinister reputation. She enlists her brother's best friend Henry, a Steady Eddie of a solicitor who has of course loved Margo from afar since he met when she was 18. Naturally their chase up the Great Northern Road gets a little waylaid by attraction and emotion.

Margo has the fear that she'll ruin things, through being impetuous, or not thinking things through, or that her reputation that seemed so fun and frolicsome while making it, will be the breaking of Henry's law practice. Her chickens are coming home to roost, and while she initially doesn't handle it well, she quickly comes around. She explicitly adopts the role of tending and caring for Henry, as a mirror of the role he has always played of caring and fixing for others.

Meanwhile, we see what lead to the great chase to Scotland in part two, which starts several weeks earlier. Matilda has a secret side hustle illustrating adult literature. It all blows up for Christian when someone edits her drawing to make it explicitly him, and she feels responsible because it's not NOT him she's thinking of when she lets her imagination fly about particular proclivities. They strike up a (delightful!) epistolary relationship, and then for Romance Reasons she goes with him to his country house to be his sister's art tutor.

The weight of reputation is heavy for both these characters, Christian has rumors around his wife's death and her notorious behavior. He feels he doesn't deserve the happiness or ease that Matilda could bring. Meanwhile she is literally bringing light into their home, redecorating and removing heavy curtains and trying to show she is more than her reputation, that she could be a loyal partner as well. "These cursed de Bords! She could make them so happy - if only they would let her."

One thing particularly striking with Matilda and Christian's story was the imagery of hands throughout. In the beginning, both Matilda and Christian think of their hands as instruments of chastisement and reward (Matilda says she wants to be punished and "likes a little pain" but wants to be petted and praised as well). They both imagine her hands bound. But as their emotions get more involved, the hand imagery shifts to empty hands wanting to be filled. Several times Matilda holds out her hand for Christian to take (he doesn't until the end) or he looks at his hands and imagines filling them with a loving touch from her. Its pining and longing made corporal. Their eventual HEA isn't just two people with similar proclivities finding each other in the bedroom, but two sets of hands being filled with love.

These two novellas fit perfectly together as a full length book, as the stories are very closely linked. There is also a novella about the Hellions' brother the Earl Spencer, In Which Winnie Halifax Is Utterly Ruined and a series epilogue A Halifax Holiday which rounds everything out very nicely.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the arc.

I was so excited to see the twins get their very own trade published book. These stories were my intro to the Vasti-verse and I first read them as a newsletter subscriber. So to years later see them together? What a treat!

As one half of the Halifax Hellions, Margo is so much fun as a heroine. She’s bold, high-spirited, rebellious, and carefree and in her own words, terrible at making plans. So when she inadvertently decides to charge off to Gretna Green to save her twin sister Matilda from an ill-planned elopement, she asks Henry Mortimer, her brother’s starchy solicitor brother to join her. Henry and Margo could not be more opposite, yet that is what makes them delightfully perfect for each other. In true Vasti style, we have all the storytelling combined with all the spiciness to make this a perfect first novella. I love it when the bandaid is ripped off, so to speak, and characters realize that they are desperate for each other—that A-ha moment is perfect for Margo as circumstances help her to suddenly see Henry in a new light. And poor Henry, he just can’t help but be smitten with Margo, ever since she bewitched him with her cherry stem knotting IYKYK. As a novella it’s complete, but where would be without Matilda’s story?

And as for Matilda, please tell me you noticed the double entendre with the use of “restraint”.
I have been very impressed with this series. I thoroughly enjoyed Margo and then was amazed that Matilda’s story
A) took the turn it did (we get a glimpse of Matilda from Margo’s book) and
B) felt like a full length novel in the span of a novella.
It’s amazing to me that an author can so adeptly write characters that I feel I know and understand THAT quickly without forfeiting plot or intentions. The meet-cute was perfection—hello? she’s been drawing pornographic images of him in the gossip rags, and he’s furious when he approaches her? YES!!! Give me the drama. And even the side characters are so fun—the housekeeper! I’m dying to have Bea’s story. Does she actually go to London for a Season? I know if anyone can work magic on her, it would be Matilda. Vasti doesn’t forget the spice either, and ironically it’s Christian that attempts to restrain himself from Matilda (unsuccessfully). Did I mention an epistolary section is included too? This is your PSA to go give the twins a chance. Whether you’re new to Margo and Matilda or have read and listened to them before, there’s comfort in reading about these two rebellious girls who take the world by storm with the forthrightness and charm. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for my complimentary copy.

In truth I picked up The Halifax Hellions on a whim. I saw the cover while perusing Edelweiss and it caught my eye. The blurb reminded me of books by India Holton (which I LOVE) so I thought I would give it a go. Friends, when I tell you that I devoured these novellas! Margo & Henry embark on a road trip to save Margo's twin from marrying a man with a scandalous reputation (we'll get to that in a sec) and it doesn't take long before Margo realizes that Henry's buttoned up personality is hiding a lot of passion - for her and her only! The guy has been pining after her for 7 years, ever since he saw her tie a cherry stem into a knot. Meanwhile, Margo and Christian are faking a marriage so that Matilda can make things even between her and Christian. You see, Matilda is a (secret!) erotic illustrator and someone edited her work to look just like Christian and he is not happy about it. They embark on their own road trip to his home so that she can be an art tutor for his sister. During their journey they discover that Matilda herself might need to show some restraint and Christian is just the guy to help fulfill that need. I genuinely could not love this book more. It's just an absolutely good time. I had people side eyeing me in the doctor's waiting room because I was laughing out loud while reading. If you're looking for a funny read filled with standout characters and some really good spice, pick up the Halifax Hellions on 2/17/26. You'll fall in love with the hellions, and the men who love them. I can't wait to go and read every book Vasti has written. P.S. There is a third novella that isn't included in this book (they have a brother!) that I am reading now and it is just as good.

Pick up the Halifax Hellions if you like:

laughing out loud while reading
spice that is SPICY
strong non-conforming FMCs
men who yearn
road trips with only one horse
only one bed
rainstorms that make them have to undress to get dry and warm
men in glasses

I loved everything about the Halifax Hellions and wish there was even more to read. This book consists of two novellas set along the same timeline. The first part follows Margo and Henry and the second follows Matilda and Christian.

Henry is Margo’s brother’s best friend and has been pining over Margo for years. When Margo begs Henry to take a road trip to Scotland with her to find her sister, he simply cannot say no.

Christian and Matilda have more of an enemies-to-lovers vibe as Matilda fights to right a wrong she unintentionally committed. After much persuasion from Matilda, Christian agrees to take Matilda back to his home to be his sister’s art tutor.

Even though these were novellas I thought the character development was great. I absolutely adored both sisters and both of their stories. I also loved that the stories overlapped in time so we could see everything from the perspective of both sisters. This was such a fun historical romance and the epilogue was just the icing on the cake.

This is the second book I’ve read by Alexandra Vasti and I immediately want to read her entire backlog. Her regency era romcoms are full of wit, laugh-out-loud humor, delightful steam and an underlying tenderness from all of the characters.

The Halifax Hellions combines two of Vasti’s previous novellas into one lovely novel with a bonus epilogue. I beg anyone who wants a light read full of joy to pick these books up. I absolutely loved the chaos that was Margo & Matilda and wish I could portal away to a party with them. I loved how their relationship was written. And the MMCs??? Completely besotted with these sisters, despite grumbling about and pretending otherwise. The tension between the couples was THICK and the wait was so worth it. I didn’t expect to meet a new book boyfriend, but I was swooning over Christian 😮‍💨.

In trying to describe this to someone I comped it as a mix of Brigderton vibes X The Great. This was a refreshing story and just what I needed after some emotionally heavy reads.

Thank you St. Martin’s Press for the ARC, all opinions are my own.

I absolutely LOVED the Halifax Hellions - both Margo + Matilda’s stories had me giggling & blushing 🤭

I rarely read historical romance, but I adore Alexandra Vasti’s writing.

Margo & Matilda are known as the “Halifax Hellions,” causing scandal wherever they go.
I loved that most of their trouble was to pull attention away from other women, since they didn’t care about their reputations. I loved the messaging that there’s no power in words unless you give it to them, & it’s mostly the men trying to control them in society.

Margo’s story (the first novella) had me wanting so much more of her & Henry!
I always love a brother’s best friend trope, and his PINING my goodness 🥹
Henry falls first and hard, & the switch gets flipped for Margo and she catches up.

Matilda & Christian 🥹
Absolutely LOVED the letter writing banter we started off with, and how their connection developed and grew the more time they spent together.

this novella duo was just an absolute delight!
