June 9, 2026Yes, this hasn't technically come out yet, but I've read all 5 issues of it (which, you know, make up the entirety of this book), so instead of rating each 20-page chunk as separate books, I'm doing this here. however it feels awkward to just log a book that hasnt technically come out yet and it would be weirder if the only review for this was just...,,...a jokey one-liner or singular sentence outlining my thoughts, so it now falls to me to be the first person to review this.
first things first, this is a short run and therefore a quick read. as i said each issue is like 25-30 pages max, so i managed to burn through this story in like an hour or so. i'm not exactly a comic book or x-men aficionado so it also helps there isnt a lot of previous knowledge on the x-men's lore which is needed to read this. anything that does have greater ties you can either read between the lines to figure out, or the book just straight up explains to you. the story itself is simple and is supposed to focus on scott summers, which like....it does?? i guess? it's less of a typical character study and more so a reminder to readers that there is in fact a reason cyclops is in charge of the x-men. and by that i mean it is a character study in Why Cyclops Is Cool Actually With So Much Aura And Not A Loser Like You Were Led To Believe™.
the question at the heart of this story is: what if scott "cyclops" summers lost his shit?
and by shit i mean his visor. the plot of this story is basically "where are his glasses? he can't see without his glasses!"
of course im generalizing, there are secondary themes of what it means to be a solider, the loss of one's childhood, the cost of survival, and what fighting for freedom is all about. but, i'm sticking with my original answer that this is mostly about what happens to cyclops when you take away his visor, his team, and all of his tools that make him an x-man. it strips the guy to his core ideals and the abilities he has outside of his powers, which leaves us with a character that is a far cry from the typical scott summers characterization one would expect aka the "straight-laced, prissy, rule-following, good guy, spineless boy scout".
also i suppose another good thing to know is that this run has pretty good writing and art!! the artist stays consistent across all five comics so you dont have to worry about the artstyle changing half-way through. there are moments where i question certain character designs but that is more of a nitpick than anything. the way the art shows violence and action feels very gritty and is engaging to read/look at. as an example of the writing (and also goes back to the PR campagin at the center of this book trying and succeeding in making scott look cool and badass and not a stuck-up loser) here is a snippet of the diologue:
"C'mon you're a frigging superhero."
"Sometimes. I mean I'd like to be. But people like you keep on reminding me, I'm a soldier."
"...ain't you supposed to have a code?"
"Not me. You're thinking of the one with claws."
so yeah this comic one-shot limited series is really nothing to write home about, personally i would have loved if it was longer, but is certainly worth a read if you like scott summers and want to see what an unhinged Cyclops looks like. hopefully i didnt spoil anything too much and helped at least one person decide if this is worth reading or not for them personally. last but not least, insert some sort of closing remark/cyclops is batman's mentor joke here :)

Lo que Marvel ha venido haciendo con Cyclops en los últimos años (décadas ya) sigue reivindicando a un personaje muy maltratado por lo que los públicos masivos saben de este por las adaptaciones cinematográficas. Afortunadamente, poco a poco se va haciendo de conocimiento público que se trata de un gran personaje, mucho más allá de simplemente un boy scout.

Scott Summers being a bad ass. Doesn’t feel insanely revolutionary, but it was a fun afternoon read and felt like a good episode of X-Men ‘97.
