Dreamer, Drifter, Drunk

Rate this book
"Dreamer, Drifter, Drunk", illustrated by Canberra artist Mick Ashley, is an assembly of anecdotes relating to Pete Carter’s weird way of watching and wandering the world. From "studying" mathematics and statistics at the University of Western Australia, driving taxis to finance a University of Canberra sports studies course, impersonating a cricketer or footballer at the very lowest level, bumbling and stumbling his way through the majesty of India, and learning the craft of home-brewing beer in strict Saudi Arabia, Pete has NEVER failed to get himself (or usually others) into trouble. Pete hopes you enjoy reading this licorice allsorts collection of stories about all sorts of “liquorish” people. Sample stories are available at www.fitzroypete.com.au.

Larrikin statistician Pete Carter's memoirs here are long on observations of human nature and short on political correctness. You can take the boy out of the bush, but a spade will always be a spade.
His experiences, from Canberra cab driver to Saudi-based expat, and things in between, provide Carter with many anecdotes well worth getting onto the page.
Disclosure: I am a former colleague of Carter (though slightly indignant I make no triumphant appearance in his book!)

It is not often you get to read recollections of amateur football these days, certainly not from Canberra. It seems that now with players contracted with highly educated professional ghost writers, computers, word processors our modern day professional football fraternity seems destined to pen their stale and tepid autobiographies minutes after round 22.

This is where “Dreamer, Drifter, Drunk” by a former team mate Peter Carter is such a refreshing read and delightful return to when you played footy for recreation not adoration nor victory and played with blokes that you only knew by their nick names such as Rippers, Obes, Fats, Tulls, Alphabet, Matty, Camel, Pud, Mad Dog, Scobes, Filthy, Gumboot, Whispers, Starky, Dogsfood, Budda, et al.

As a wise man sagely advised “Do yourself a favour” and purchase a copy or two of Peter’s book. You will enjoy well written and funny stories with tales of good natured misadventures and misdemeanors of here and abroad, of being desperate and dateless in Canberra, of football mateship and of a friendly larrikin and author we lovingly know as ‘Fats’.
