"Sha Qing isn't afraid of death- he even longed for it.
He not only kills his enemies with his knife, but also kills the warm and bright parts of his own soul with each slash, calmly facing the end he set for himself, which was also death.
From beginning to end, he was walking on that bloody road of self-destruction.
He wasn't a dark hero.
He's not someone who just loves playing with people's hearts. Not even just a vengeful man with a heart of gold.
He.. He's a person willing to be on death row.
And I'm the one he chose to be his executioner."
Wow! I'm honestly genuinely surprised on how this story turned out. At first. I was weary with the story taking place in the US. It gave a lot of" room" to make people of all races as perpetrators and the enemy. So if you're triggered by color being often mentioned, I'd steer away from this story. If you DO decide to read it, read the FTL because the Rosmei edition was... Not good.
I understanding this story may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I love action stories!
This volume picked right back up from the end of the Island arc where Leo and Sha Qing have to work together to survive that enemy field landmine of an island. As ridiculous as some of the things were. They were very clever and very believable. Like the tide in the cave with your arch nemesis... For twelve hours... A hard dick and a back hole... I MEAN GUAT!!? (っ º - º ς) hahaha no, seriously! I'm not kidding! TEEHEE
Anyway, that turned out to be a lot more heartbreaking than I thought because Sha Qing wanted to be intimate with the man he loved without revealing his true self. What a metaphor!
The way Sha Qing planned EVERYTHING was insane. All from killing every mfkr that hunted humans and orchestrated the whole "game", to landing in prison to find ONE person that had details on his final kill, his abuser and mother's murderer.
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
You may think how do these two even make their relationship work? Often times, I found myself wondering how Sha Qing is going to get away and how are they going to end up together if Leo hates him so much.
Leo who hunted him down and never gave up to catch his target. And it's precisely why Sha Qing chose him.
[Even though I knew that we're both so incompatible like fire and water, I still kept on testing if that was really true time and time again, and tried every means to make you remember me.]
[But we're like two celestial bodies forcing ourselves into the same orbit, and in the end, we'll only collide and destroy each other.]
[No need for that, Leo.]
[There's no need to destroy each other.]
[Just destroy me.]
[Just stay there, continue to shine, and watch the world...this
fucking rotten world...]
[... for me.]
Sha Qing lost all hope in the system in which I'm surprised how well it kept describing it. Though Sha Qing is a villian. He truly believes in the philosophy that the system is broken. The people's million and millions of dollars in taxes, go into keeping criminals in prison. And often times, so many of them get away with crime.
Sha Qing wasn't having it. He took matters into his own hands, but at the cost that he, himself, knew that his ending should soon come. (｡ᵕ ◞ _◟)
Sha Qing orchestrated everything in order to plan his death. This man has been plagued and absolutely ruined by these realities of life and how the system failed him as a child. A child who (TW ⚠️ ).... Was raped facing the windowsill that faced where his mother's head lied outside in the snow. (...)
He was abandoned over and over, going from home to home and numerous people failed him. And yes, even at one point: Leo. (˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )
But Leo is whom he needed, and as stubborn as Leo was, he also didn't give up on Sha Qing. Leo is the person Sha Qing needed when he was little. Someone who wouldn't give up in fighting for justice.
Leo made me furious at some points because he was so irrational, but I couldn't blame him. But he does go though an overall, satisfying redemption arc. And yes. It's the "almost died" trope.
Leo speaking to Sha Qing, and he being Leo : "Since you already sometimes fantasize about continuing to live in this world because of him, why didn't you tell him earlier so that you two could make that fantasy into a reality? Is it because he is always so slow, stubborn, and so methodical to the point that he was too late on understanding the whole truth?
Is it too late if, right now, he tells you not to destroy yourself, to not give up, and that the world isn't as bad and hopeless as you think, it is?
You once saved his soul when he fell into darkness and pain, when his soul almost shattered.
Now, he also wants to repay that salvation you once gave, and find a reason to continue living with you. Are you willing to accept it?
Sha Qing....Sha Qing!"

Though at the end, he unrealistically is set partially free by being a slave to the FBI. It still made me happy in a fictional sense because, where else where you get the ultimate Villian vs FBI agent ff come true! Only in my delulu brain.
P.S before I make this incredibley long: I wasn't aware of trigger warnings. Many scenes of when Sha Qing was in prison horrified me.
So many of those men are sick. They think only with their dick and their pride.
I'm glad it never got to Sha Qing being gang raped by those monsters. It was so close at some point and I was terrified.
Tho, Leo fucked up at some point and his demons really came out. I was so disgusted. Like... Common dude... Making him bleed?? Full on non con... And you knew it! Yet you still did it! (·•᷄ࡇ•᷅ )
But fear not, because it gets better and Sha Qing gets his turns on top lol

“I’ll make sure to visit you, because you know what? I just realized that maybe some people just end up in a weird, unconventional kind of relationship that can’t be understood with a normal mindset. If that’s us, then I’d rather accept the reality and learn to live with it.”
I don’t know how many times I’ve written and edited this review, mostly because “The Green Cleaner” kept making me rethink my feelings. I loved how his character did a complete 360, especially with the contrast between the two sides of him we first see and where those sides eventually end up. The domestic side and the killer side were both presented so clearly at first, so watching those impressions shift was unsettling in the best way. I wouldn’t call part of it character development because it felt more like a mask finally slipping. That made me nervous while reading because I kept thinking about how badly things could end. I had a few possible endings in mind, and one of them came true. It was the ending I wanted, but it also made the payoff feel a little less satisfying. Since this is a crime series, I wanted it to be bolder and leave a sharper impact.
That’s also why I still love the morality in this series. I mentioned this with the previous volume, but I like how the killers can have their own moral beliefs, even when their actions are horrible. Sometimes, what they do ends up saving innocent lives. Then there are people in uniform, people who are supposed to represent justice, making choices that can hurt innocent people. “What is legal is not always moral, and what is moral is not necessarily legal” fits this book so well, and it’s one of the reasons it stayed with me. It’s a topic I think about a lot, so seeing it play out here made the story feel more personal to me.
Leo and Roy’s dynamic made everything even more intense. Their connection is messy, emotional, obsessive, and hard to define, which is exactly why I couldn’t look away. Roy is still the most magnetic character for me because he’s clever, brutal, and unpredictable, but there’s also something vulnerable underneath all of that. The crime parts felt stronger here too, especially with the prison, escape, and killer island arcs pushing the story forward. I do wish some side plots had more weight, and I wanted a stronger punch from the ending, but I was still hooked. I’m honestly conflicted on how I’m gonna rate this, but I’ll just put a 4 stars for now.

This was a very solid ending to this short series. All the plot points wrapped up perfectly from my perspective.
I absolutely loved seing more of the ML's sassy and flirty side and loved the tension in interactions between him and the MC before the actually got together. I only wish there were more scenes with that crazy tension.
My biggest problem in this series however is that I never really got to like the MC, Leo. There are multiple scenes in this volume where I just don't understand why he is acting the way he is.
Yet, I would still recommend this series to people who enjoy series with criminals as one of their MCs.

I was half-irritated, half-bored out of my mind reading this series. Each kill (sub-plot) is either copied from old short stories or similar to modus operandi of real-life serial killers. All of which can be googled.
I would have forgiven all of that, but the MC keeps acting holier-than-thou. There's not much depth in his struggles, and his black-and-white thinking is mostly stupidity disguised as "morals".
I really don't see any redeeming qualities and if I was the titular character, I might've bashed his head in, out of sheer annoyance.
It is such a disappointment because the blurb was interesting. But the books? Total waste of time.
