Huh. TBH I'm not quite sure when I read/finished this book; didn't think I read it in 1-2 days but ... maybe? It was pretty good but also something felt "off" about it - I even wondered if it was one of PLK's earlier books ... but then I saw she wrote it during the height of the pandemic and was like "... oh." So yeah that tracks. Too bad we're STILL in the pandemic/dealing with covid despite people ignoring it.
ANYWAY. This was ... oof. I think it was even harder cuz I'd read Spring River Flower Moon not long ago and that had a couple who communicated BEAUTIFULLY. Meanwhile this one ... didn't until like the end and I just wanted to SHAKE them. Although at least it wasn't enmity and rape. But ... god the entire setup almost was misunderstandings. And I was DEEPLY disappointed by the shit emperor like ... damn author, why. I ~get it, cuz maybe that's how emperors were historically and definitely in fiction. But BE DIFFERENT AND WRITE A GOOD ONE.

Plus the fact that ML and FL spent almost all their time apart, and most the time they spend together on screen was terrible. They just ... it was not a bad read but I just hoped for so much more.
Definitely no mad I read it, and it's well written and a good story ... just stark and you have to expect the frustration.
