REBELLION The Third Weaponsmith Chronicle Autumn 1642. Four years earlier, Roger Hawken’s father Richard had called him back from Germany and command of Hawken’s Regiment, to take on the responsibility of running the family estate at Abbot’s Down, close to Amesbury in Wiltshire. With his father now dead, Roger is settled in charge, though his elder brother Henry is the actual owner of the Hawken lands. The four years since have been eventful. Roger has been married and doubly bereaved. His killing of Charlie Westerhead at the storm of Hollenstedt, seven years before, set in train a feud with Charlie’s elder brother, Lord Francis Westerhead of Seend, near Devizes. This has led to Roger being charged for a second time with Charlie’s murder, and although the courts have thrown out the charges, the feud has not gone away. Roger Hawken has had enough of war. He has seen enough of it to last any lifetime, but war comes again to him unbidden, as the country takes sides for the Civil Wars, the Great Rebellion. When King Charles raises his standard, Prince Rupert calls on Roger to pledge his sword to the Royalist cause. He makes his way to Shrewsbury to receive his commission, setting in train a sequence of events in which civil war and the Westerhead feud combine to bring about the near-destruction of the Hawken family.

It isn't a 3 and it isn't a 4 - 3.5 is a good rating for this book.
Crawshaw writes some very good fight scenes, truly engrossing and energetic. At the same time his short, sharp, sentence structure builds pace and action into the story. This book sees Hawken defend his own home against the vengeful Westerhead, a good story which continues the development of the previous books. No spoilers but Crawshaw doesn't mind killing off a few of the good characters he has built through his previous stories.

This isn't as good a read as the other books in my opinion, but only because there is far less action and a lot more plot-development in the politicking in which Hawken is finding himself drawn into. The continued development of the 'sight' or 'power' still confuses me, though I do understand what the author is trying to develop. What it does, though, is defer from the extremely human characters he is excellent at creating. I like my heroes, as I am sure many readers do, and Roger Hawken and his defenders throw many good ones at you. The story is starting to develop an almost super-human element, almost fantasy, which isn't historical fiction as such. Whilst I can go with it because I am drawn into the plot, if you like factual based history and drawn out battles you might find this slightly lacking.

Overall a good read, but I would like to see more of the excellent fight scenes and soldierly discussions and less of the development of the super-powered elite. That said it's stilla good read.

Great read

Great story line filled in with multidimensional characters, plenty of credible action, a vein of mystery and myth and wonderful historical minutia. Will be on the lookout for crawshaw's next book. This man's books are seriously messing with my sleep pattern.

Unique, intelligent

I have already read the three books of The Weaponsmith Chronicles for free as an Amazon Prime subscriber. Yet I
now intend to buy the trilogy, partly so I may peruse them
again in the future, but more importantly because an author of this calibre deserves to be compensated for his
impeccable work. I look forward to any additional works

Excellent Historical Fiction

While this book sometimes is mired in unnecessary details and confusing character names, it is well-written and good sequel to the first two books. I'll be looking forward to the fourth installment.

Great Series

As good as Cornwell's best. Interesting, likable characters. Set in a bit of history that I do not know much about. Action, adventure and a bit of a history lesson. I am looking forward to the fourth book.

Roger gets involved somewhat in English politics between the Royalists and Parliamentarians. He has left the mercenaries and become an English farmer but an old enemy has other plans
