For private eye Rich Weed, the smart thing to do would've been to say no. No to the heart-stoppingly beautiful woman who sauntered through the front door. No to the case that smelled fishier than a Venusian squid farm. No to the thief who left behind more than he made off with. But no one's ever accused Rich of taking the easy path in life—or the smart one.Now Rich is stuck in the thick of it, bouncing between clues as he tries to unravel a bizarre case of religious brainwashing—one that leads him from the mandibles of waffle-loving aliens to the unwashed hands of half-baked hippies and back. As the mystery thickens, only one thing is as lovely as the client was, he really should've told her no. *** THE TAU CETI TRANSMUTATION is book one of the Rich Weed sci-fi mystery series. Hi! I'm mystery, fantasy, and science fiction author Alex P. Berg. Be sure to check out my bestselling Daggers & Steele series, a fun, fast-paced fantasy/noir mystery hybrid! I've also written urban fantasy, epic sci-fi, and more.
My review rating system is as follows: 5 = Amazing, I absolutely loved it! (Fantastic!) 4 = A very good book, although I had a few quibbles with it. (Great!) 3 = A book I liked, but either it had a few more serious problems or I didn't connect well with it. (Good!) 2 = I had major issues with this book. (Not good...) 1 = I hated or DNF'ed this book. (Real bad!)
A simple entertaining adventure, which may look like sci-fi but really it's just a PI adventure which could have be set in a completely different dimension with pretty much the same plot. Yeah, it's got aliens instead of humans, but it does not make much of an impact in the story either way. Which is not a bad thing, as long as it works.
But it irked me that the main character was such a mysoginist. So much that I certain point I decided to look up the writer (I'm terrible at remembering names!) and found out I had already read another book written by him - a book I hated for that very same reason.
This one I did not hate though. I don't like Rich Weed at all, but at least his colleagues were not as unlikeable as him... so I suppose I can live with this one. Not enough to read the second book in the series though.
Can't really recommend it. I totally get what the author was going for, but I didn't enjoy the unlikeable protagonist or how the mystery is carried out. The setting and worldbuilding was also kind of neither here, nor there for me.
For some reason, even though I've enjoyed other books by this author, I was not expecting much from this book. Turns out I was pleasantly surprised with an interesting story set in a somewhat non standard world with enjoyable characters and some witty banter. All in all, a fun read.
I took me a while to get into this book but i'm glad I kept going. Overall a nice mix of farce, detective and sci fi. The characters grew on me, eve the background cast were well described I know have a very clear picture in my head of Keelok owner of the funtorium.
This is a very entertaining sci fi detective story. Mr Berg is a good writer, combining a future world, mystery, and humor. I really enjoyed this book.
This series is a different take from the author's Dagger and Steele series. The same snarky humor is present as P.I. Rich Weed (not a fan of the name) and his cyborg sidekick try to solve a puzzling mystery involving a beautiful woman, alien religious leaders and a group of hippie farmers who have given up the use of technology.
