While it follows the prior 3 books similarly in plot, it has its own path in the monster world. Unfortunately, the issues were vast when it came to the writing making it difficult to enjoy.
*SPOILERS*
Just to name a couple issues: It starts with saying she is a lighthouse keeper’s daughter whose father died. Towards the end, it changes. Now she’s the princess, daughter of the king?! But wait… it changes again back to the lighthouse keeper’s daughter??
The couple of characters that were adversaries felt just thrown in to say it had them.
Detail in this book that was given was great, but so great it was apparent the era kept switching from modern to older. Mind you, this is to have taken place around the same time as the 3 prior books.
Also, on multiple occasions it repeats itself line-by-line as if editing was done but then changed again and never deleted.
The writing on this book was very jarring at times and felt like 10 people were trying to write 1 short book based off the 3 prior books. It had the potential but fell flat. Here’s to hoping it was just an off week in writing and the next book isn’t the same floundering fish as this one.
This feels like a mishmash of different drafts more than anything solid. It started strong, even if I didn’t care for the romance. Then it started switching between POVs with no warning. It feels as though important information was cut out and the story wasn’t mended to work without it. Mari isn’t a princess. She’s a lighthouse girl. And her father is dead. Or did the author forget that while writing this?
I've enjoyed this series so far, but this one was very confusing. It seemed like parts of the story were missing, for example at one point in the story it was mentioned that the kings ships were "still there" even though it was never mentioned they were there in the first place. I'd recommend the series, but this particular story wasn't good.
The character building was good and I like the overall story, but the way the POV switches between characters within a chapter is jarring, especially because the chapter is supposed to be from one character's POV. Maybe it's on purpose but it doesn't work for me.
I enjoyed this book, my only problem was that the chapter titled The Siren’s Song flip flopped back and forth between the MMC and the FMC POV with no warning. Kinda took me out of the story for a bit. Still a decent read.
