The Long-Lived King
In an all-new adventure set in the world of Disney’s The Owl House, Luz, Eda, King, and the gang return in The Long-Lived King, an original graphic novel cowritten by series creator Dana Terrace.
Set after the events of the series finale, dive deeper into the Boiling Isles than ever before.
King has never fully considered what it means to be a Titan—until now. Burdened by the knowledge that he will outlive his beloved Owl House family, he’s still determined to enjoy every moment he can with them. Even if that means using one of the Collector’s devices to wipe away his sad memories.
But when King accidentally erases Luz’s memories, he must enlist the Collector and Eda to help him recover Luz’s memories and confront their deepest fears along the way. Packed with humor, action, and stunning black-and-white illustrations in a fresh black-and-white manga-inspired style, this graphic novel welcomes readers back to The Owl House with an unforgettable adventure.

"What is grief, if not love perservering?"
If I had to pick a theme that defines the novel, it would be this one. The Owl House has always done so well with capturing the feelings that come with loss of loved ones and how one could cope with death. And this time we looked at it all through the eyes of an immortal child who at mere ten years old realizes the kind of weight he'd have to bear. He will outlive almost everyone and such reality would be hard for an adult to cope with but a kid? Unimaginable, to the point he resorted to wrecking his memories in order not to feel that weight.
But there's no escaping, not for King or for Luz who know that Eda's curse, her illness, is getting worse and one day the inevitable will come. Quite an evil, and briliant choice, to give a terminally ill parent to an immortal kid that will outlive her by far and one who already suffered the death of a parent. The novel focuses so much on past and current grief, and future one too and is ultimately a hopeful piece of work that tells us not to dwell on death to the point we're no longer feeling alive. All that conveyed by gorgeous art and the very nice inclusion of how restoration of cultural practices after colonization, could help people cope with these feelings.

i cried-a lot.
it hurt my heart but also healed it so much. getting the owl house back has made me so incredibly happy and grateful.
getting to read through this and experience all the good memories again made me so nostalgic.
it also hit very close to home for me. king and i share a lot of similar thoughts regarding death. getting to read about it was honestly really healing.
i love owl house so much and am so thankful for everything it has brought me. 🫶

Not very good, the show itself is just very oversaturated with progressive messaging and outright propaganda. It's unfortunate to say considering how popular this series is, but this book just poorly reflects everything that's wrong with it.

I am a huge fan of the Owl House. I was there for the finale, I felt the heartbreak of the show being cancelled, I cosplayed as a student one time, I even went to the Owl House panel at Comic Con back in 2023 (one of my favorite flexes). It was a huge part of my life and I was so grateful that despite certain circumstances, the team was able to stick the landing for the finale. Now, that being said, did I ask for a graphic novel to be created in the Owl House universe? No, but will I accept it and immediately buy it after it releases? YES. And this story was so. much. fun. It constantly reminded me of a longer episode of the Owl House and you could feel the love that was put into these characters. The writing style was so similar to the original show and the drawing was amazing. It looked somewhat like the animation of the Owl House but mixed with a manga style that was a really pretty mix. This story was a beautiful creation that makes me hopeful for future content that may come out of this.
The actual story was a good continuation of the show as well. Often times, extra books and shows that add on to an original piece annoy me. They will erase parts of the original, find contradictions in plot, or even just create something completely new that doesn't acknowledge their predecessors. This was not that by any means. The story immediately picks up where we left off in the epilogue and follows a good character storyline that makes sense for where we last saw them. King's conflict, despite having to do with him being a titan, is something so human and perfect for his character. But my favorite part was actually seeing the background characters. People who I did not think I missed like Hunter and Amity and Gus, even Darius, all showing up and seeing how the world has treated them was a treasure that I did not know I would enjoy. It was like seeing old friends for the first time since you've gone and grown up and they've grown up but you're all still the same at the end of the day. It was a perfect check in from them and I enjoyed spotting them throughout the background.
Now, this story is for Owl House fans who have actually watched the show (wow, shocking, I know!). But in all seriousness, I do not believe you would be able to understand the story to a certain extent if you have not seen the show. That's by no means a fault of the writing, it's hard to put the entire lore of the Boiling Isles into a single graphic novel! But if you have watched the show, loved it, and itching to see your favorite characters one last time, this is the perfect story. Overall this was a fun and quick read for myself and hopefully many other fans! I cannot wait to see where Dana Terrace and her crew takes these stories in the future!

Pretty Good!
After all this time I was kinda hoping the grand return of The Owl House would be a bit... more? Honestly this feels more like another adventure in a hypothetical Season 3 than a distant finale.
Like it really does feel like a repurposed script turned into a graphic novel in places, just framed as a graphic novel for older readers. Which aside from Eda cursing here and there the "Intended For Older Readers" feels more like marketing. This could have easily been for the target demographic of the show. The early to mid YA crowd can come to terms with death like the rest of us, it builds character. Even if I think it could have focused on that more. Honestly I've always thought the actual story writing for Owl House has been kinda weak and this does not sway me on that front.
I think the promo material tricks you into thinking this was gonna be more introspective on King's part than it actually is. Which again,, fine. I can't fault the book for not being what it's not. What it is, is enjoyable. Even if most of the first half is sorta cameo heavy. But can I really complain when I liked it? That said the introspection on King's Quasi-Immortality does not get enough focus and feels secondary to Boiling Isle type shenanigans for the most part. Which sucks because again what we do get feels more aimed to kids. That wouldn't be a problem mind you if the book didn't tote itself for older reader. I found this in the normal comic section and not the YA one section for crying out loud.
All that said I do recommend the book if you're a fan, not so much as your first step into Owl House though.

My ex-partner preordered this book for me months ago after they had gotten me into The Owl House, since it was originally one of their interests. I completely forgot all about it due to us breaking up (which is still ongoing) after receiving an email from Barnes & Nobles telling me to make another payment for my pre-order. Even though it had already been paid for by my partner. So for anyone who lives outside of the US or just doesn't have a Barnes & Nobles in their country, I would highly suggest either ordering it from Amazon or just wait for the book to come to whatever bookstore is nearest to you.
Unrelated tangent aside, the book was still great and I really loved it. The artwork was easily one of it's strongest qualities for me. Of course the story was still great, but I ended up being so distracted by the panels that I wouldn't even fully register what was happening half of the time. I loved the character designs, especially Amity's. Though that's mostly just me being biased since she's my favourite. Her dress was so gaggy.
The story itself was super sweet and I loved the message behind it. I think it did a pretty good job at tackling the concept of death and the complicated feelings many people have towards it. I'm definitely one of those people.
My one and only gripe is that it felt way too short. I know that's such a petty complaint to have but I really would have loved to have spent more time with some of the other characters. I hope there's plans to release more Owl House content, though I doubt that'll happen. Regardless I still feel very fortunate that I got to have a little taste at least. It was absolutely worth the $40.

The Long Lived King (Owl House graphic novel) was perfect and I cried. Honestly I was near tears from practically page one because I was just so happy to revisit the series and immediately I could tell it was going to be perfect, but then when Willow showed Hunter Flapjack's headstone I was gone and there was no recovering. I adore the art, all of the characters looked so good. It really is just like stepping back into the boiling isles and the series. Because it was written for "older readers" they let Eda curse and I love that for her. I was so happy that we got to see the Collecter again and I love the lettering they used for him. This series is just so special to me and I really really hope Dana Terrace writes more of these.

This is a cute, but flawed addition to the Owl House story. Although it was great to see the characters again, the plot felt a bit rushed, and I would’ve loved to see Terrace linger a bit more on the characters’ emotions, rather than constantly jump straight into the action. Of course, it’s hard to add more complex topics when writing for an audience ranging in age from young children to adults, but I feel like the last season of the show did a better job of handling complex topics than this comic did.

Between 4 and 5 stars.
That little half star is dangling because I wish it was a little bit longer to allow for the explored themes to have some more room to breathe, and for the "adventure" aspect of the story to feel less cramped.
But it's a tiny issue in what is a beautifully drawn, moving addition to the "The Owl House" story, ideal for those who grew up watching the show or for older readers to get a glimpse at the character's lives a little later on. I really hope that there are more graphic novels in the works based on the quality of this one.

If you want to know exactly what my childhood with undiagnosed OCD was like read this book. Everything King was struggling with I struggle with… it was so cathartic to see a character that has the same thoughts I do find a way to make peace with things…
