A powerful royal dragon shifter. A clueless human. A mate bond powerful enough to change everything.
Archer Moore has spent his entire life being told he’s too much—too needy, too dependent, too easy to leave behind. When even the one man he trusted confirms it, Archer does the only thing he he runs. Across borders, across oceans, anywhere that doesn’t feel like right. Then he stumbles into San Noctis. Drawn to the town by something he can’t explain, Archer barely has time to wonder if he’s finally found home before a violent encounter in the surrounding woods leaves him injured, terrified, and certain he won’t survive the night.
Romilly Saint has waited decades for his mate. As King, he could choose anyone to stand at his side. Power-hungry suitors and political alliances mean nothing compared to the bond he’s been denied for far too long. When Romilly finds a wounded human in the woods, he knows Fate is involved. The bond is instant. Unchangeable. And Romilly knows one thing with absolute Archer was never too needy. He was only waiting for the right man to care for him. Romilly has no intention of letting his mate doubt his worth ever again.
His Needy Mate is an AU edition of A.W. Scott’s Bellport world, reimagined with a royal shifter family and the mates Fate binds to them. This MM paranormal romance includes fated mates, mating marks, scenting, nesting, and a consensual Daddy D/s dynamic. There is no mpreg in this world.
A magical, gripping, and beautifully crafted dragon shifter romance.
In this start to a new series we follow a hurting runaway, Archer, as he ends up in the peculiar town of San Noctis. What then takes place is a wonderful tale of peril, fate, betrayal, love, and magic.
What makes this exciting and heartwarming paranormal romance even better is that Scott has created it as an AU (alternate universe) version of their Bellport sports romance series. San Noctis can be read without having read Bellport as it’s completely original (the characters even have new names). However, for fans of Bellport, seeing the Bellport family be brought to life in a new way adds an extra bit of magic.
I fell in love with the Saint Family, the amazing parents, quirky brothers, and easy acceptance. With an incredibly rich world full of dragons, fae, vampires, werewolves, witches, and a surly species of garden gnome you’ll never want to leave.
What you’ll get: •Achillean Dragon Shifter Daddy Romance •Bellport Series AU •Dragon King/Human •Fated Mates •Hurt/Comfort •Physical Injury/Peril •Mild Age Play •Found Family (literally) •Magic
Archer, a human who’s always been told he feels too much, flees his old life and ends up in San Noctis—where he’s attacked in the woods and left for dead. Romilly, the dragon‑shifter King who has waited decades for his fated mate, finds him. Their bond locks into place instantly, and Romilly vows to show Archer he was never “too needy”—just waiting for the man destined to cherish him.
A sweet fated‑mates romance with a fun supernatural twist, this story was simply lovely to read. I adored how gently Archer was cared for from the very beginning — not just by Romilly, but by his entire family, who offered him unconditional love without hesitation. The emotions were clear, warm, and easy to connect with, making the whole journey feel comforting and joyful. It’s exactly the kind of story that leaves you smiling. This was an MM story with mature content and a BDSM-like DDLB dynamic.
** Please note this book is an AU edition of A.W. Scott’s Bellport world, reimagined with a royal shifter family and the mates Fate binds to them.
His Needy Mate by A.W. Scott was such a fun, heartwarming start to a new paranormal series.
Archer's journey to the magical town of San Noctis is filled with danger, fated mates, found family, and plenty of heart. I loved watching him find not only love but a place where he truly belonged. The Saint family completely stole the show with their warmth, humour, and unconditional acceptance.
The world-building was fantastic, bringing together dragons, fae, and even some delightfully grumpy garden gnomes to create a town I never wanted to leave. Fans of the Bellport series will also enjoy seeing familiar personalities reimagined in this alternate universe, although this story works perfectly well as a standalone.
Overall, this was a magical, comforting romance with lovable characters, an imaginative world, and the perfect mix of humour, emotion, and found family. I can’t wait to return to San Noctis and see what comes next
4.5 I went into this book with a bit of worry, because I adore A. W. Scott’s Bellport series and didn’t want anything to spoil that magic. I even re‑read Soft beforehand and thought I could see where this story might be heading. Thankfully, I was completely wrong. This isn’t Bellport in disguise, and the Bellports are definitely not dragons. Instead, we’re taken to San Noctis, a tiny town where Archer Moore ends up by chance, and where Romilly Saint — dragon King — finds him injured and instantly knows Fate is involved.
This first book is a great introduction to the Saint family and the wider world, with shifters, Fae tensions, and a mix of Littles, Middles, a Daddy, and a non‑binary sibling. There are a few familiar elements that echo Bellport, but the setting, lore, and family dynamics make it feel fresh and distinct. It doesn’t read like a reworked Bellport story at all, and I’m genuinely excited to see where the series goes next.
This story had a lot of potential but the execution was lacking. Archer leaves his home in search of something new and finds san noctis. But as soon as he arrives, he is attacked by a wolf and left for dead. He is found by Romilly, the king of the dragons. He brings Archer home and they develop a relationship. There were a few plot holes in the story in my opinion, and this is a spoiler, but one of which was how the people against Romilly knew Archer was his mate before they even met. Another was Archer's relationship with his friend and roommate. The writing style, while a little more formal, was very stilted and awkward, with sentence fragments. Spice level: 0.5
Objectively - very boring. The author has said this is an AU of one of her other couples, and quite frankly I think they only said that because otherwise everyone would point out the obvious: this is the Bellport family and their relationships just with different character names. And honestly, if it was an actual AU, they’d have the same names. I feel like the AU label was put on to placate the readers who will definitely say they’ve read this before. And it’s disappointing because I’ve read everything this author (and their pen name) has written, but the last few releases have been really boring and feel like recycled ideas and word salad. Big sad.
Romilly and Archer’s book is so great! I have been looking forward to this series since it was announced and the first book is everything I wanted it to be. It has a protective Dragon Daddy and a Human Little in need of love, care, and protection. This is a fated mates, no angst, insta love, dragon shifter romance with all the cuddles, carrying, quirky family, peril, protection, and a great story. This is a Belport AU but you don’t need to have read that series to enjoy this one. I really love this book and can’t wait for more!
Cute read a bit generic, meaning not much depth to any one character. But a quick, light, easy read. Spoiler-ish below
My only thing is when authors mate humans with long lived or immortal species and don’t change their life expectancy. They said of the 2 noted instances, that one lived a century and they were happy with that. To a creature who will live several centuries that isn’t that long, some humans already live to that so it’s kinda sad when you think that’s all the time they get together.
Oh my heart on this one. Archer and Romily were new characters while ALSO being similar to Finn and Bellamy. I adored that Archer rarely walked on his own with Romily too. Getting to visit a new world with Bellport aspects was perfect. Everything is new without things being repeated from Finn. This was done wonderfully and I can't wait to see what's in store for this world!
This book was really good. I liked the author's version of dragon shifters and fated mates. I enjoyed the Daddy/little elements of the story. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
This was a sweet story and I wanted to know more about Archer and how the town welcomed him as well as the other paranormal elements that were surfacing from him. I do wish the story was longer as I wasn't ready to get to the last page.
This was a really cute story. A bit like a fairy tale. Romilly was so sweet to Archer. It was a joy to read. Looking forward to reading more books in this AU.
I’m a huge dd/lb fan and I struggle to find this including paranormal elements. I know Athena Steller has her series but that has gone really downhill with the dd/lb element being practically non-existent for the last few books in the series. So I was excited to try this series.
Sadly it didn’t work for me. I’m still unclear why Archer was viewed as needy/too much by friends/family etc which led him to leave his life and just hop on a train - ultimately leading him to Romilly.
Romilly finds Archer wounded in the woods and rescues him, naturally establishing he’s his fated mate and takes him home. There’s a good amount of caring going on at this point, but also a lot of internal angst by Romilly at telling Archer he’s a dragon/king. Archer also seems confused as to why it’s a given he will stay in the castle. So yeah, no one talking to each other properly for about half of the book, sigh.
There’s age play elements that I enjoyed, but there could have been more general play time, especially given Romilly has a playroom built for Archer. When age play is included in a dd/lb book I feel like it should be more prominent, like I’d want a few scenes dedicated to it.
There was a good amount of background plot which is going to develop over the series and I liked that. I also liked Romilly’s siblings as they’re either daddies or littles.
So yeah, I really wanted to like this but it just didn’t work for me. Maybe because it’s book 1 and the author has to set everything up, and I always find book 1 the weakest in a series due to this. I think I’ll try book 2 as I don’t want to dismiss this series just because this book didn’t quite work.
