Where Eagles Dare Not Fly

Rate this book
“Some men fly for glory—Trip Gibson flies because he must.”

From the pen of award-winning author Frank A. Mason comes Where Eagles Dare Not Fly, a soaring new chapter in the Sunlit Silence Series.

It’s January 1943, and Lieutenant Colonel Trip Gibson’s 14th Fighter Group—decimated in North Africa—has been withdrawn from combat. Summoned by General Henry “Hap” Arnold, Trip joins fellow aviators Philip Cochran and Johnny Alison to create a revolutionary air the First Air Commandos. Their mission will become one of the most audacious operations of World War II—airlifting Brigadier Orde Wingate’s Chindits behind Japanese lines in the Burmese jungle.

As Trip navigates the chaos of war, he also wrestles with the ghosts of his past—his vanished lover Lady Barbara Alcock, the loss of Constance Rose Fawcett-Borley, and his estranged sweetheart Ruby Daye, now touring the world with the USO. Driven by his addiction to flight—and to danger—Trip is drawn into a mission that will test his courage, loyalty, and heart like never before.

Sweeping from the scorched deserts of North Africa to the mist-shrouded jungles of Burma, Where Eagles Dare Not Fly captures the daring, heartbreak, and valor of the pilots who redefined air warfare—and the man who risked everything to go where even eagles have not flown.

“The sky was his refuge—and his reckoning.”

Loved this series

I loved reading these books. The characters were fabulous. I couldn't put the books down. I don't normally read book series because I become bored with them. Not this time. Trip Gibson was so real and I felt his pain at losing his true love, Connie. I was disappointed with the last book. I wasn't ready for it to end. I wanted to hear about Millie and the baby. The ending felt like a cliffhanger.

Lucky Trip

The main character, Trip Gibson, with his movie star looks, plenty of money, libido of a nineteen year old and the wit, personality and charm of Cary Grant, is easy to like. Add to that is his remarkable skill with all aircraft, he is the total embodiment of the perfect hero. As in all of Mason's books,
there is a fast paced story line containing enough mixture of romanticism and action to keep the reader turning pages. My wish throughout this series was for more detailed maps. Maps that show where indicated locations could only be helpful.

Planning and Implementing

This has been great read as the Trip Gibson enterprise continues. I related closely with this story as I spent a good deal of my Air Force career in planning, costing, budgeting for various programs -- it is the type of duly I enjoyed most. It was empress how the author led into Project 9 and the events that led up to implementation. Can you imagine that working today in the " me fist" " I want my share plus" political environments we live today . Thanks for the detail.

Air Commandos

I especially enjoyed the attention to details of flying the aircraft and the characteristics of each type of plane. Also the little details of the cost of food and lodging. Nice recognition of the unsung WASP heroes.

brilliant

This is an incredible series, and every book becomes a marathon of reading great literature. This book has a human element to it. That’s different from many of the previous books are hero trip has a life outside of flying. And the saga continues.
