Winter Ferine: A reverse harem wolf-shifter omegaverse

Rate this book
This action-packed, first installment of the Cursed Omega duet is full of witches, wolves, magic, alphas, betas, omegas, dark humor, violence, and a cast of unhinged characters, written by best-selling author Birdie D’avo.

Mona’s entire life is defined by illness. Until one night, after a party, a gorgeous, mysterious stranger rips into her neck and drains her life away, leaving her naked, cold and alone. The next morning, she wakes in the body of a wolf, her chronic illness gone—but so is her humanity.

Now she's on the run, hunted by men—wolves—who call her omega, like she's something precious, while also trying to outrun the nightmares of the man who did this to her. Meanwhile, something primal pulls her north, and as the attacks increase and her wolf grows stronger, she's left with an impossible keep running or face her fate?

After one more brutal attack, she finally gives in and heads north to a remote mountain in Maine. What she doesn't expect is their lead Alpha and his second-in-command claiming she's their fated mate. She has no intention of giving in to their demands. After all, what would she do with one mate, let alone two? And when she begins to suspect she has a third, Mona realizes she knows absolutely nothing about shifter life—and it could cost her more than she’s willing to give.

I wasn't that impressed with this book

I still don't like the greyson after the comment he made about his mate or the fact that neither him or Orion comforted her afterwards.

greysone even says this:
"I'm not worried about that. She's my mate. She'll always forgive me." he disgusts me a times, we never even got a good apology. it was an hasty floppy apology. Mind you this is the male lead who's 150 years old... he's embarrassing

I hate Andrea, she's a jealous, vindictive abuser who knowingly chooses to hurt someone weaker than herself. yet the author tried to do a weird ass friendship between her & the fmc, after she almost beat her to death. that's really embarrassing

also apparently the author really hates her FMC, making your fmc apologize to your male leads ex, who Almost killed you simply because you bumped into her???
"I'm really sorry, Andrea," I say, keeping my voice steady. "I should've been watching where I was going."

to summarize:
the Fmc is stupid, took her way too long to go north too but at least she's a bit stern with her mate.
silas deserves better
greysone is giving frat boy & I hate him
Orion lack personality
felt like I was reading about teens to 24 year olds instead it was 25-150 year old, a shame authors can't write maturity too.
I'm not impressed at all with this book especially the Andrea book, a typical mean girl villain....gag

This was a good start to the series. I'm not sure I like Mona. Confused why she was always apologetic and soft to Andres when she literally beat the shit out of her and almost killed her before she could get a word out. She was pretty annoying with her wolf and fighting it, but accepted other parts of being a wolf. Of course she gets caught the way she did by doing stupid shit. I just feel bad for Silas and hope he can get rescued soon.

Whats the best way to deal with a cliffhanger? Go hang yourself off another cliff! Don't you know? Fresh, new pain is the best way to get over existing pain! 🤪🤪
(For context I just came here after finishing Tormented Omega and if you know, you know 👀👀.)

In all seriousness, this was really good. It felt like a very fresh, action packed take on shifter omegaverse.

I feel like people who read and enjoy omegaverse don't really have any right to complain about instalove, (and I'm not doing that here) but I will say this book very deftly avoided that trap. I mean sure, the book includes fated mates, so there's necessarily gonna be some aspect of instant attraction, however the main characters don't really meet (kinda 👀👀) until around 40% of the way through the book, and even then there was still some tension before they finally got settled into things. Our FMC is very much a spicy redhead lol, so there was some push & pull in the dynamic that kept things fresh and interesting!

For me this book gets a 4.5 where I have to take half a point off because some of the prose was a bit awkward or repetitive. It only happened in small spurts, but relatively consistently throughout the book, and it tended to just throw me out of things. However, the interesting plot and great prose the rest of the time more than made up for it, so I'm still gonna round up to a 5.

Ok guess I better go read another book with a mad cliffie to distract myself from pining for these damn books.😭😭

God, someone please make me stop picking up books that have just been released, meet every desire I want in a dark omegaverse, and don't have a sequel ready to immediately start up.

This was such a good read. It was dark, disturbing, and had all the trappings of a great het-omegaverse (at least in my opinion.) I loved the relationship that developed fairly slowly between Mona and the two present MMCs: Grayson and Orion. There, of course, is a lot of betraying body syndrome which is frustrating just because Grayson is an asshole far more frequently than would be understandable. I did like that Orion gave a much gentler approach to winning Mona over. My heart broke for Silas's situation. The fact that he was being tortured for 4 years and most everyone assumed he had just walked off was horrible.

The pacing in this is immaculate. The suspense builds steadily right up until we get to that horrible cliffhanger at the end. Alas, because I picked this up on a whim and fell in love with it before realizing there is no available sequel yet, I will be impatiently stalking the author's socials until I get answers on what's going to happen to Mona, Silas, Grayson, and Orion.

Captivating

I enjoyed this! I love the mystery around Mona and who she really is. I was hoping for more resolution with Silas in this book. I'll be looking forward to that in book two! Definitely recommend if you like A/B/O/D and shifter stories with spice and a fair amount of plot.

Decent start to a duet. I normally don’t like too many fantasy creatures in the same story aka wolves and witches. Not great, not terrible.

This was surprisingly good. I would go into the details.. but the reviews for book 2 are so bad that I’m not going to read it. So I’m not going to waste my time with specifics.

My future self will want the details on the problems with book 2 though, so:

Crazy miscommunication trope usage
Heavy handed self blame
Nonsensical plot issues

Loved this book! Can't wait for the second one.

*Fated Mates
* Reverse Harem
* Emerging Omega
* Shifterverse
* Evil Witches
* Hidden Powers
* End on Cliffhanger

Some non-spoilerish quotes:

"We don't need meat for days, psycho. We just ate." She knows I'm still hungry, but I'd never admit it. Disgusting human food. Full of chemicals. "I will take tasty, salty fries over Bambi any day. We are never killing Bambi. Do you hear me?"

"I vow to put you first, Mona. Until my last breath. I want you here. More than anything. Please stop threatening to leave. Please."

Grayson says with a crooked smile. It's creepy. Man never smiles, and it looks all wrong on him. Kinda manic. His teeth look sharper than ever. Mona glances at me nervously.

DNF 53% I tried, wish I hadn't.

Anyone else get annoyed with Mona????

My annoyance started with her calling the shifters werewolves. Her own wolf kept telling her they were shifters and she kept at it. Like girl, get a grip. You turn into a wolf how about getting answers? Mona is so bull headed she refuses to listen to anything... Just why???

For someone who was basically on their death bed, why is Mona not embracing life???

It gets worse when she meets her mates... Everything to her is a fight and absolute denial/disbelief. 53% people.....

The MMCs though.... Couldn't they buy her clothes? Hand outs for a Luna? come on! Though to be fair from my point of view (my dislike of Mona) she didn't deserve anything. She didn't cook or clean or like engaging with anyone, or help anyone. Grayson needed her to balance him and she just ... watched... "he's so volatile". Despite her omega side pushing her to at least hold his hand, Mona didn't want to. But yeah feed me.... She's not a cat !!!

This was apparently her new home yet she brought absolutely nothing to the table. Low and behold when asked about her wolf suddenly Everyone! Is At Fault. How can you be betrayed by people you do not give a monkey's about?

Just argghhh...... I want my time back.

This release somehow slipped under the radar, but I’m glad I discovered it. It turned out to be an incredibly addictive read. Birdie D'Avo first gained my attention with her human omegaverse Heat and I've been a fan since. Winter Ferine might be my favorite yet.

The FMC has no idea she’s a wolf shifter until a mysterious stranger, Silas, bites her and vanishes, leaving only a cryptic order to find his brother in the North. She wakes up with a second voice in her head, a tiny, chaotic wolf she names Beep. She doesn't realize that bite wasn't meant to kill her but to unlock her inner wolf.

When she finally reaches Sila’s brother’s pack, things go downhill fast. She’s beaten and thrown into a cell. That’s exactly where Grayson and Orion find her and where the story really starts to get juicy.

About the main characters: They're varied and each have a distinct personality.

Mona - 👩🏻 discovering a new world that isn't human but has her trusty wolf, Beep, to guide her.
Silas - 🧔🏻‍♂️twin of Grayson, a former womanizer, now enslaved to a witch
Grayson - 🧔🏻‍♂️Ashland Alpha, very intense
Orion - 👱🏻‍♂️- Beta to Grayson, absolutely devoted to Mona the second he sees her.

We don't know who the last mate is. And it's not who you're thinking when you're reading it. But I believe it's a character that was probably mentioned a couple times only.

I also wanted to touch on the other woman drama in this book. Grayson has a history with his enforcer, and that does play a role through her actions and the repercussions it has. But once he meets Mona, nothing happens between them. He was already done with her. Silas, meanwhile, ends up trapped in a cell with a kidnapped pack member and they’re expected to procreate, so just a heads‑up for readers.

If you’re looking for a heroine figuring out her identity, fated mates, and a harem that builds at a satisfying pace, this is a great place to start.

Tropes:
-MFMMM (No MM)
-Slow burn, slow build (of harem as well)
-Twin MMCs
-Paranormal wolf shifters
-FMC that doesn't know what she is
-FMC on the run
-Fated Mates
-Golden retriever/cinnamon roll MMC
-Enemies to lovers vibes
-Found Family
-Forced proximity
-OW drama (No cheating!)
-Spice 🔥🔥🔥 ( we get a couple scenes at the end. And they were good)

This was SOoOoOoOo good. 5 growley stars ⭐️
Like honest to God, this is one of the best shifter books I’ve read.

It’s so well written. The plot is PLOTTING. There’s mystery, intrigue, mates and romance, figuring out the shifter world, and it is compelling.

I’ve read about a bajillion shifter books, and this was unique and fresh in the way they handle the designations and the magic system.

It is not dark, but some elements certainly are. Read the TW’s.

⭐️ Plot: 5/5
🌶️ Spice: 3/5
📖 Genre: Dark Shifter Romance
🏞️ Setting: Maine, USA
🗣️ POV: Multiple POV
🛏️ Tropes:
- Shifters and Witches
- Alphas and Omegas
- Reverse Harem
- 3 MMC’s and 1 FMC
- New to shifter world
- Fated Mates

Mona is at a NY party when she comes into contact with a tall dark and mysterious man. She’s convinced he’s not entirely a man though, not human.
When she is attacked back at her apartment, that is confirmed.
The shifter bites her and tells her to go North.

When she awakes, she is surprised she’s not dead, but even more surprised that she is on all fours and covered in fur.

She meets her wolf for the first time at the age of 25, and together, they reluctantly reach an agreement to head north as the attacker told her to do.

She understands absolutely nothing about the shifter world or being a wolf. Everything is new and unknown.

When she arrives at Silent Peaks, she discovers two men who smell and feel like home. But she doesn’t understand why. When they tell her they’re mates, she is more than concerned. Because the way she feels when she is around them? It’s the exact same way she felt when she was with her attacker.
And he happens to be the brother of her biggest mate…who has been missing for 5 years.

There will be some mild spoilers for book two

I liked this book in the beginning, even though Mona kept fighting with her wolf for six months, and ended up hiding and running, foraging and stealing just to get by instead of just listening to her wolf to go North. I don't know about you, but if I were suddenly turned into a wolf and was told to go North to people that would supposedly help me, I would at least try.

And there is Andrea. She is a very vindictive and extreme person. After nearly killing Mona and being angry and mean towards her, their relationship suddenly becomes amicable when Mona is kidnapped. It felt forced and wrong. It wasn't smooth, and there was no real build-up for it to be justified. It was...soft. I already knew Andrea was gonna get close to Mona, given she was an enforcer. It made sense to make her a part of Mona's bodyguard detail.

Then the ending felt too rushed. It was very obvious the ending was going to happen in one of two ways: Mona goes with Grayson and Orion and gets kidnapped, or she will be left behind and tricked, and then kidnapped. So I wasn't surprised by what happened. What I did find weird was Mona going into heat again so soon. The only thing I could think of that would've caused it was that her wolf had been suppressed for so long. But starting book two, there is nothing about it. I believe it was mentioned in this one that omegas go into heat maybe once or twice a year, but she was suddenly in heat again barely two months after her first one.

And finding out her lineage kinda felt... anticlimactic.

The plot still feels very disjointed to me, like we're missing something. The characters were still surface level and Grayson was a jerk.

This was a lot better than expected.
She did stress me out in her constant refusal to go North. The longer she took, the more bad things were happening to both herself and other people, but let’s traverse the endless woods!
Why not!
You’re such a rebel!

I shouldn’t have started this before work.
Throughout my day, I’d remember her stubbornness and it would ruin my mood.

If she’d just done what he said, all of their nightmares could’ve ended early, but we also wouldn’t have a story, I guess.

The initial spice was abrupt and unappealing.
It relied heavily on our knowledge that the escalation in intimacy was inevitable, but not then and not like that.
I get wanting to be different, but there are better ways to implement a group effort.
That was weird.

And there was no buildup to it.
In fact, the whole prior evening is converted in a chaotic summary that renders an important development into a blip.
Whatever.

The ending was twisty and interesting.
I ended up really liking it as a whole, just found some bits to be rushed or overzealous in their attempt at being unique.

This book was just okay for me. The writing was solid, and the story was interesting enough, but nothing really grabbed me or made me eager to continue with book two. I can’t point to anything that was particularly wrong with it—it just never fully connected with me. I think the biggest issue is that I’m just not invested enough with the characters. Because of that, I don’t feel compelled to keep reading the series, but this book was a good read!

I feel like the running away part lasted for far too long. Silas had the most dimension to his character, the other two were a bit flat. Otherwise, a chill read.
