The Book of Cold Case Files: 5 Terrifying Serial Killer and True Murder Mysteries: An Insider’s Look at Systemic Failure from Around the Globe

Rate this book
Five crime cases. Four continents. Decades of unanswered questions.

A Russian predator who bound victims with homemade garrotes while police struggled to connect the dots across jurisdictions. A midnight attack on teenage campers in a Finnish forest—three dead, one survivor, zero arrests. An Ohio butcher so surgically precise that even legendary lawman Eliot Ness couldn't stop them. A 450-mile Canadian highway where dozens vanished while authorities looked the other way. A Nigerian forest where urban legend became horrifying reality.

These cases share something beyond brutality. They reveal catastrophic institutional failure—the missed evidence, territorial disputes, and willful blindness that let killers operate freely.

Each investigation is examined through forensic detail and psychological profiling. You'll discover how a lack of coordination between agencies gave predators room to hunt. How outdated forensic methods left critical evidence unprocessed for decades. How marginalized victims were dismissed by the very systems meant to protect them.

This isn't just about who committed these crimes. It's about why they got away with it—and what that reveals about justice itself.

From Depression-era America to modern-day Nigeria, these cases span continents and decades. Each one exposes a different fracture in the criminal justice system. Each one asks the same when institutions fail, who pays the price?

The files remain open. The evidence is waiting.

Not the “same old” crimes rehashed once again

As a lover of true crime, and criminal investigation professional I find that True Crime compilations often go over the same cases - the well known names and “heavy hitters” with a high body count or sensational MO. In contrast Adam Bundy collects 5 lesser known unsolved cases to investigate in this volume; including cases from Nigeria and those where Indigenous women are the victims.

Bundy splits each case into the facts, delivered in a manner where it is the facts of what happened, and not the language used to describe them, that evokes an emotional response from the reader. Followed by an “Insider’s Take”where the author adds his own voice to the mix, almost allowing for a conversation with the reader about theories and beliefs.

While covering cases in other countries or where the victims are the “less dead” Bundy is not scared to point out Law Enforcement and greater societal failures that allowed a series of crimes to go on, unstopped, for far longer than they should have done.

My only complaint about this book is the adverts between chapters for the author's other ventures, however this is hardly a reason to skip this book - an excellent summary of five cases that every true crime fan should be aware of.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily and all opinions are my own.

The Book of Cold Case Files by Adam Bundy is a chilling true crime collection that explores five disturbing cases from around the world. What stood out to me was not just the crimes themselves, but how the book highlights the investigative failures and missed opportunities that allowed these killers to escape justice. The cases are well researched, unsettling, and thought-provoking. If you enjoy true crime that digs into both the mystery and the flaws within the justice system, this is definitely a compelling read.

interesting

This is an interesting glimpse into some unsolved serial killer cases around the world. None were cases I had previously been familiar with so it was eye-opening.
For some reason I didn’t connect emotionally with the book the way I expected to but the delivery of the information is there, well written and clear.

Pretty decent read

This was definitely a cool little read of cold case files from all around. Very enjoyable. I'd definitely be interested to read any other works the author has available.

I've always been interested in True Crime books, & Stories. Although the things I read get me, because I can't understand why they would do the things they do and not feel anything from it.
