More than two decades after Queen Angelique’s death, Barbara Morgan struggles to find the will to go on without the queen’s light. The darkness invading her soul threatens not only her, but all of Avalore. The dragon deep within her spirit has gone dormant, refusing to face the hopelessness plaguing their people. Desperate for a break from the endless misery, she turns to Clay, igniting the passion sizzling between them for one glorious night. When the Elders announce the reigning queen still lives, Barbara faces the biggest decision of her life. Turn her back on Clay to join with her predestined mate, or condemn their entire race to extinction. Clayton Matthews has wanted Barbara for as long as he can remember. Each day she slips farther and farther from his grasp. Stubborn gryphon that he is, he refuses to let her go, so when she turns to him for comfort he can’t deny her. He doesn’t want to. Their one night of passion isn’t enough, and he wants so much more. He’d do anything to keep her safe, but can he step aside and watch the only woman he’s ever loved be joined with another man?
a good introduction to this series. you get the feeling so much is wrong, so much is happening and that despair is just around the corner. tired of fighting against the darkness barbara wants to give in to the desire she's fighting the most : Clay. both know they shouldn't give it. it's not done to be intimate with someone who isn't your named fate, but the darkness eating at barbara makes her desperate. after a night of passion, barbara returns home to find the elders waiting for her with news she never expected to hear and with a request she never thought she had to go through. for that to find out i would highly recommend reading this short introduction into the world of avalore!

I have had these books for a long time and as I reread anything I am posting reviews for it. Two friends become lovers and then find they are destined mates. This tells us nothing and these characters do not appear in book 1 at all. The background about the darkness does not really get explained. Don't waste your money as it does not add to the series and is in the front of book 1 Call of the Dragon anyway.
This is a hint of what is to come in the series. Girl is in despair as all is about to fail. Hot guy comes to the rescue and they have hot sex - which is beautifully written and sexy. Then despair again as the girl must do something which tears her away from her love. This is a short story but it is still beautifully written. Adams lets you feel the sorrow Barbara feels in the short span of the story. The darkness crowds her and she is at the end of her ability to resist. In her despair she turns to Clay in an attempt to push the darkness away. Well developed and written, Adams gives the reader a taste of the magic in her words and her stories.
I truly enjoyed this books, the characters and the story. I am so looking forward to reading more. They pull you in and won't let you go even at the end you are wanting more
ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTFUL !!! An absolutely delightful addition to the series! Flickering Light is a stand alone short story with only about twenty four pages but pack s quite a punch and comes complete with its very own HEA. Whether this is your first time reading anything from the Return To Avalore Series or if you are a die-hard Avalorian fan, this quick lunch time read will satisfy your craving for a deliciously entertaining interlude with some our favorite folks from Avalore. The story is sweet, exciting, enchanting, heartbreaking, heartwarming, romantic and exceptionally well written. I have followed this series since Adams' first release, Call of the Dragon, and I can't seem to get enough of the fantastically magical world Adams has created for us in Avalore. Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!
I had never read Elianne Adams and I happened to garner a free copy. Before reading this short, sweet tale, I checked her other works and will soon be starting "Call of the Dragon". Why? Because this short was a well written, beautifully sculpted, and riveting story.
The author takes us on a trip through a darkness the main character, Barbara, is forced to live. She must make hard choices and then when she makes a choice which drives her desire, will she suffer? And what of her tribe? And then she is called to appear before the Elders.
The ending is not what I hoped for because I wanted more conflict. Maybe I will find that in the next books.
This book definitely played with my emotions...i'm actually putting myself in Morgan's shoes loosing an important person as the Queen...represents my grandmother, and when everything changes for herself saying she had basically abandoned hope since...and let herself go...not good...And then Clayton loving her as long as he could remember...it looks like Morgan is in a tough situation to either be with her destined mate...over Clayton...I guess I will have to definitely read more of this series to find out who she decides!! Thanks Elianne for doing what you do as an author/writer for us readers you are appreciated :) Keep up with the great books...and definitely will be back...:)
I received this for my honest review.this is my first time reading anything from the Return To Avalore Series and it is a short read but packs quite a punch. Barbara Morgan struggles to find the will to go on without the queen’s light, the darkness invading her soul and the dragon deep within her has gone dormant, refusing to face the hopelessness.Desperate for a break from the misery, she turns to Clay igniting the passion that has been sizzling between them so they agree for one glorious night they will be together. This will definitely leave you wanting to read on
Short and sweet. It's a prequel but a very good prequel. I have read all of Elianne Adam's books in this series except for "Lost in Magic" and it's next. I am addicted to this series and can't wait to see what she comes out with next! She just keeps upping the ante on the magic.
I am leaving this review of my own free will. In no way, have I been bribed, coerced or paid for this review.
I am loving this series I read the first then went looking for more .Ms Adams has created a fantastic place, Avalore and a great cast of characters. My only complaint is that Barbara and Clayton's story is so short. I did however enjoy it. I'm. .ow going.g to start the third book in the series.
Flickering Light by Elianne Adams is a short read. The characters are good, there is snarky humor and a bit of heat. This is a complete book, not a cliff- hanger but there is more to the story in the next book.
I think you need to be into the rest of the series to enjoy this short story. Despite the overly flowery language, I had no idea what was going on in this world or when and where it was supposed to be taking place (especially with names like Barbara and Clay for the main characters).
It was a wonderful, Short and sweet. It's a prequel but a very good prequel it let you know how the characters struggled not to give into temptation. Excellent beginning of the series. I recited this book, when I subscribe to Elianne Adams newsletter.
One of my author friends was promoting this book so I decided to give it a shot. This was hot but just did not love it. There was no story what so ever just did not love it.
This story was touching, skillfully written and sweet It just shows that sometimes what you want and need, you have all along without ever really knowing and sometimes being afraid to search for it.
Very suspenseful and dramatic, with a feeling of despair wrought through the early part, to a HEA conclusion. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
