Sometimes Never:
I loved this book so much, it was beautifully written and gripping from the start. I read in Cheryl's website that she did a lot of research about self-harming, and it shown, it felt so real, so emotianal reading about what Hope went through.
The scene when she is debating with herself...
"I have enough scars.
I do not have enough scars."
“What would happen if I cut there? Right across my face where everyone could see. Everyone would know. Maybe someone would finally stop me.”
I can't even explain why those words gripped me so hard, but they knocked me right on my a.. butt. Hope's fears, insecurities and feelings all screamed reality and I went right through all good and bad things with her. I know Cheryl wanted to write about unlikeable charachters, but damn, I loved that girl so much and wanted the biggest, cheesiest happy ending ever for her and Mason, they both deserved it. He was amazing too, I can't believe how understanding, supportive and strong he was with Hope and her issues even though he had his own problems, too.
I loved the secondary characters as well, I'm so glad they have their own stories.
The book was full with beautiful thoughts and sayings, and the Kissing Wounds? That simply just blew my mind with it's every word <3
Before Now:
I loved SN, and it will always have special place in my heart, but Before Now is even more unique for me.
I wanted to kick Park in the shin repeatedly while I was reading his book, but I felt for him at the same time. As much of a jerk he could be, he was as sweet with Lucy when they got together.
Before Now takes place two years after SN. Park still can't forget or forgive what Hope did to him and he still feels so much remorse over the car accident. He is bitter and destroys himself with meanigless sex and alcohol.
Then çomes his beautiful new neighbor, Lucy with her kindness and big heart and good intentions. The problem? She is off limits to him and even if she would't, she doesn't do one night stands, and that's all Park has to offer. Or maybe he can give more to her than he thinks?
I loved that Lucy is a perfectly normal, sweet, loveable charachter without demons and sceletons in her closet. She is not a pushover, but she always stands by Park, no matter what he does to push her away. And man, does he tries.
I'm usually not a fan of angst, but I loved every moment of this story. As Park sings: "Hurts so good". And all the beautiful things they think and tell each other <3 My copy is full to bursting with highlights...
“You and me, Lucy, we’re like a fire: Hot and unpredictable, scary and mesmerizing all at once. We started with a spark and before I knew it, I was consumed. I love the way you burn me up from the inside out.”
"We merge like two flames, fast and out of control. Because sometimes that’s just how love works. We may smolder, we may blaze, we may rage without reason. But it’s always beautiful."
Cheryl McIntyre has a really unique way with words. And not just with the beautiful ones. I just about died laughing when Park lamented about bacteria and evil kids, that's one of my favorite scene.
Lovers of the new adult genre, one click this one if you haven't yet. You won't regret it <3
Long After:
Because of books like this, I'm ashamed I'm always behind with reviews. Long After is one of my all the time favorites.
"Nobody is perfect. Until you fall in love with them."
Annie doesn't want to be like her mother, so even in college, she is looking for the perfect husband candidate. He has to take college seriously, come from a good family, and know what he wants from life, just like Annie. She has a lot of issues with herself and her self-esteem and uses her snarky comments as a shield.
Enter the tattooed music junkie Chase with his crazy hairstyles and cool attitude, who she knows and secretly likes ever since they were teens. Totally out of question.
Chase is a really good friend, loyal to the core and he is always there for his friends, no matter what. I adored Mason, I was head over heels in lust with Park, and Chase has a really special place in my heart, too. He was so patient with Annie, she could always rely on him. My heart broke for her, for him, for them, as the story proceeded. My heart went out for Annie, but I felt sorry for Chase, too. He just knew that something is wrong with Annie's boyfriend, Loden, but Annie denied it and he was so helpless to do anything but be there for her if it needed.
Sometimes I was angry at Annie, but I tried to understand her fears and insecurities, but I just can't. Nothing can be worse than that, Annie and the girls in her shoes, don't ever stay in an abusive relationship. All in all, I liked Annie despite her attitude.
I loved their constant bickering, getting on each other's nerves, and those pranks made me laugh life crazy.
Again, just like with Sometimes Never and Before Now, Cheryl McIntyre managed to demonstrate a social issue really authentically. The characters and their problems are painfully real and accurate, and developed through the story.
It's amazing that every chapter in the book was named after a song, I enjoyed to listening them while reading, and found a lot of new favorites. For example, I heard The Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars, and love the band ever since.
Cheryl McIntyre is one of my favorite writers. I couldn't put Long After down, it made me laugh, cry, feel sadness and anger, happines, and all the emotiones possible. Excellent work!
