Don't pick this book up unless you can put everything else in your life on hold! This work of realistic fiction opens with one of the most gripping, haunting chapters I've ever read. It follows the story of Nicole, a recent college graduate, who is on her own and seizes the opportunity to leave Canada to work for a year as an au pair (nanny) for a family on Ko Samui in Thailand. What begins as a dream for Nicole swiftly devolves into a nightmare when she is scammed and entrapped. Other chapters are told from the point of view of Quinton, a young man who is working to help his parents with their marijuana business in Canada. The two characters' lives intersect in ways that affect them indelibly. The tightness of this beautifully written novel and its suspense make it a page-turner from start to finish. This is the kind of book you finish and wish the author had another one already out!
