”This world has no mercy for side characters. But I love those side characters.”

I love the messaging this series has about writing your story. I love so many kdramas, but so many of them involve female characters whose only power and strength is tied to a male characters. They can only accomplish things like stopping bullies, securing stable employment, or escaping debt by being attractive enough to a rich male character. In this story, Melissa’s power isn’t at all tied to how desirable she is to other characters. She accomplishes her goals by outwitting the others, by sheer faith, and hard work. It’s so refreshing to see and makes her the best FMC I’ve read in any manhwa.

This is a great volume despite it being entirely during a battle. There are lots of series where I find battles overly long and boring. Here, we get a lot of forward momentum with the isekai plot and some emotional moments with Nine, Melissa, and even Yona. We get Ian, Jack, and Melissa’s brother having some growth, as well.

I’m really enjoying this reread.

This shoujo doesn’t embrace the traditional overly beautiful graphic style but a comic emotive one. It mixes up all the genre types (romance, action, slapstick) so it never is able to excel at one. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea it is nice for a break. The tropes and predictable plot points are still there but the manner of reaching them tends to vary from expectations.

Female protagonist of a novel gains sentience and is forced to relieve the events every time someone reads the book. Despite her hard efforts she cannot change the story. Then one day the villainess Melissa Foddebrat begins behaving strangely. She tries to break off her relationship with Crown Prince Ian, saves an injured werewolf, and calls her brother out on his stalking of Yuri. Transmigrator Dayoung Ha befriends the young mage and using her knowledge from the book works to change events. While she finds that some things are still forced by the world, Melissa refuses to relinquish personal control.
