Step through the gates of the world's most famous university - no interview required.
Oxford may be centuries old, shrouded in tradition, and surrounded by myth, but what is it actually like on the inside? Drawing on hidden histories and stories passed down through generations of students, Inside Oxford explores the whole ecosystem - the colleges and their rivalries, the teaching that made Oxford world‑famous, the big nights out, the bigger essays, the finances no one talks about, the scandals everyone talks about, and the strange, stubborn magic that keeps people falling in love with the university.
Step into the shoes of a student on this witty, eye-opening, and deeply affectionate tour, guided by Oxford insider and viral creator, Oliver Carter, and The Secret Professor, an anonymous Oxford academic with nearly twenty years' experience of tutorials, committees, and college politics. Together, they chart the full arc of Oxford from nervous applicant to seasoned student to grad‑school survivor (or drop‑out...), revealing the tensions and triumphs that make the place unlike anywhere else.
Whether you're a future applicant, a nostalgic alum, a curious visitor, or someone who has always wondered what really happens behind these ancient stone walls, this is the ultimate guide to the real Oxford.
I've been interested in Oxford University since my long-ago days as an undergraduate at a middling state university in the US. The place has always seemed both mysterious and awe-inspiring. This is the first book I've found that gives an outsider a comprehensive view of what Oxford is really like inside and how it functions. I am especially interested in history (ancient to modern) and Victorian Era literature, and I wish that the authors had provided more in-depth information on just how much Oxford students study in those particular areas, what they are required/recommended to read for the various courses, how much time the reading really takes, how tutorials in those subjects are actually conducted, how subjects for essays are chosen, what exams in those subjects are like, etc., etc. I realize that the book speaks to Oxford generally, so I didn't let my disappointment prevent me from giving the book five stars. Highly recommended.
This is a really great way to learn about University of Oxford. If you’ve watched his TikTok videos you’ll be pleased to know his voice and sense of humour come through in this book making it a fun read.
If you are thinking of applying to Oxford or even wonder what it would be like give it a read and see for yourself.
A quick and comprehensive tour of Oxford through the life of a student, Oliver takes you through the application and all through college life, including parties; studying; dining halls; fancier parties; backflips on lawns on the way to yet another party, though sponsored by the the college next door that you absolutely have to crash by climbing over the wall, because what fun would it be to pay for that; financiers of the colleges; the education system and its traditions; and, once more, more parties, but this one only once every hundred years, and you missed in in 2001.
While aimed at those looking to go to Oxford, this is rather accessible (and if you listen to the audiobook, your internal monologue may speak in a posh English accent for a few days). He’s very proud of his many hijinks when he was a student, which helps paint Oxford as a real world fantasy for those who love Harry Potter, dark academia, etc. and those who plan to visit Oxford, whether for vacation, visiting friends (as I’m doing), or going for a conference.
