A huge star of this sexy short is the storm itself bearing down on the men as they struggle to do what emergency and health care workers do during such events, put other’s safety over their own. Jared is called out to help an elderly hospice patient, and must be carried to her home on the island by the fire truck. He’s been crushing on Deputy Chief Mike for a long while, but assumes he’s straight. He finishes up his task and due to another emergency, it’s determined that Mike will drive him back alone, however when the next wave of the storm hits, they are forced to take refuge in the abandoned fire house where Jared finds out Mike is not so straight after all.

As I said, the real star of the first part of this book is the storm itself. I’ve never been in a hurricane (or an earthquake as Mike notes he’s from California and more used to earthquakes). Blizzards yes, but blizzards don’t pick up light posts and fling them at you, so I really enjoyed being in the heart of the action, from a nice safe literary distance. The descriptions are very evocative and your heart is in your throat as everyone struggles with Mother Nature.

Once Jared and Mike end up at the fire station, the focus of the story shifts to their relationship, or the start of it. The sex between the two men is sizzling and yet has an underlying gentleness. Jared doesn’t do one night stands and despite Mike being huge, he’s gentle and it’s got a romantic feel. There is a bit of a big misunderstanding at the end before our two heroes (in all senses of the word) get it worked out, but it doesn’t last long until it’s cleared up and they can move on.

If you’re in the mood for some wild weather and romantic but steamy sex with two nice guys, a perfect choice. I quite enjoyed the experience of both.

I love how the description of the hurricane is so vivid. I can imagine Jared and Mike, while they're trying to get away from the hurricane, to drive to the station. It's a great picture in my head. I also love Jared's job as a hospice worker; his passion for his job is so palpable. There's that misunderstanding in the end, which makes up for the "conflict" in this short story, which then leads to a hopeful future. It's a nice read, definitely.

Very good short m/m romance about a hospice nurse who rides with some firefighters (including the one he's been crushing on) during a hurricane so he can reach an at-home patient.

Severe weather makes a sexy backdrop, as long as you're inside watching the elements rage on the other side of a window. Landfall, by Lori Toland, lets a nurse and a fire chief have their moments. It's in the middle of a hurricane, so the moments should be awfully good.

The story unfortunately requires severe suspension of disbelief, and I was tired of the logical inconsistencies by page eight. The island is being buffeted by ninety mile an hour winds, the roads are closed to all but emergency vehicles, the bridges are collapsing of the storm surge, but a hospice nurse has to make a non-emergent house call, the emergency equipment becomes his personal limo, and getting him back to the mainland when he was in a safe place is the fire chief's concern. The hospice nurse, Jared, doesn't have the sense to follow directions or to come in out of the rain, even when it's being driven into his face at ninety miles an hour.

Jared is a romantic, though, and he's harboring a secret crush on Mike Brown, the sexy fire chief who becomes his chauffeur and rescuer.

I was a dreamer deep down, always hoping one day my prince would pull me up on his white horse and we would ride off into the sunset together. Maybe his red fire truck is a white horse in disguise.

Part of this meet-wet scenario involves Mike carrying Jared back to the truck. This, a few pleasant but non-committal remarks in public, and some wild sex back at the fire station bring out the romantic in Mike: this is the sum total of their interaction but Mike is already dreaming too.

Mike pressed his lips together and then sighed. “I realize where we ended off that morning, and I feel terrible. I left abruptly and… I thought… I hoped you knew how much you meant to me.”

Readers who enjoy insta-love stories will probably like this; the weather and the sex are raging, but readers who want to see some development will be disappointed. I was rather sad, because the set up had a great deal of potential for adventure with two strong characters, which did not materialize. 2.5

I love, love, love this book. . . A sexy deputy fire chief and a wonderful, kind heart hospice nurse who braves the storm to help his patient and then gets trapped with his knight in shinning armor (see sexy fire chief reference above) while trying to make his way back to safety . . . DUDE! What's not to love!!

The sex scenes that unfold when the two heros end up trapped together in the firehouse are HOT!!

Plus, having braved a few hurricanes .. . I love the descriptions in this. It makes the coming together of these two men all the more visceral because you're feel the storm induced adrenaline.

Two hot guys, a disaster and lots of steam. Sound like a book you’d be interested in? Then grab Landfall by Lori Toland. I’m so glad I got to read this book.

Ms. Toland nabbed me from page one. I had to know what would happen next and got conpletely engrossed in these two men. The book might be short and have sweet parts, but let me tell you, there’s plenty of steam in those few pages, too. The writing flowed well and I couldn’t put the book down.

I totally enjoyed Jared and what he was trying to do. He leads with his heart right out in the open and though he’s got his shy moments, he’s devoted to his patients. Running out into a hurricane might be considered a little foolish, but knowing what he was there to do, I commended him.

Now I have to admit, I’m not usually a huge fan of first person narratives. That said, this book didn’t bother me. What did stick with me and I’m still on the fence about was Mike. I’d have loved to have had a little bit of the book in his point of view. There were things he did that I didn’t really understand and would’ve loved to know his motivations behind them. Still, the book is white hot and I’ve read it again and again.

I’ll be on the lookout for more books by Ms. Toland as this book introduced me to a new author I want to read more of.

Hurricanes are no a joking mater, and the danger they put people in can bring about situations where "normal" behavior is suspended for a little while. When the storm in this story hits, Jared and Mike are suddenly isolated and ready to explore a mutual attraction neither of them wants to admit even exists.

Jared is a hospice nurse and needs transportation to and from a patient who as decided not to evacuate. He has been crushing on Mike forever, and when they find themselves isolated, he takes the opportunity to give in to his feelings. Not that it does him any good, since Mike seems to ignore him the next morning and Jared is devastated. A week goes by until Mike comes by and they talk, but I was never clear what Mike's problem was and had trouble connecting to either one of the main characters.

If you like catastrophe-type situations, if you’re not expecting any real conflict, and if you're looking for some hot man-on-man action, you will probably like this short story.

I’ve been a fan of Ms. Toland’s books since I read the first one almost 2 years ago. When I found this one on Amazon, I couldn’t click it quick enough, and I started reading it when it finished loading!

While this isn’t like the other books by Ms. Toland, mainly because it is a bit shorter than her other books, I still enjoyed it quite a bit. I thought that even though it was short, it was still action packed, and I was left with a few “wtf” moments that made me want to read further into the story.

I felt like the characters were also well written, and it was very easy to connect with them on an emotional level. I was very much rooting for Jared and Mike.

I do hope that we get to catch up with them in the future!

This is a nice story, with realistic elements regarding the hurricane and the danger. However, the miscommunication didn't work for me. After a great night of sex, during the storm, Mike then acts like a complete asshat in the morning, basically tossing him out of bed "time to go" and silently taking him to the car. When mike finally comes to see him, he claims it was due to it being his first hurricane? Wait a minute, you were in the thick of it and didn't act like a jerk. Then you get laid and are different? Not impressing me, Mike.

DNF at 64%. Ugh, this story is only 41 pages long and I can't bring myself to finish it. The set up had potential: fire chief and hospice nurse stranded on an island during a storm. It sounded so good, but the execution...the execution just didn't work. It just came off as ridiculous and the writing just didn't flow. I didn't even make it to the sex in the shower scene. My eyes were rolling so much that I had to stop reading or I was going to do some serious damage.
