Originally born in Algeria, Yves Saint Laurent moved to Paris when he was 18, and only three years later he was handpicked by Christian Dior to take the reins as designer of his fashion house. Over time, Saint Laurent resur- rected haute couture from the casual mores that predominated in the 1960s, but also offered chic cachet to ready-to-wear clothing. He was among the earliest of designers to incorporate non- European references into his work, and in 1983 he became the first living designer to be feted with a solo exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Vogue on Yves Saint Laurent is a stellar volume in the series from the editors of British Vogue , featuring 20,000 words of original biography and history and studded with more than 80 images from their unique archive of images taken by leading photographers.
This book was fascinating! It’s a detailed look at the life of Yves Saint Laurent, his inspirations, evolutions, breakdowns, loves, work process, businesses, and motivations. He was a genius at design and zeitgeist while creating timeless pieces. He loved to make women feel special in their clothes. A must-read for people interested in fashion and design.
I think all fashion books should have pictures, and this one, unsurprisingly, has a great collection of photographs to accompany the description of Saint Laurent's career. For those wanting an introduction to his work, this is a great entry point. It is not too dense and does a good job showing the development of Yves Saint Laurent. If you're looking for a deep dive or a tell-all about his personal life, this probably isn't the book for you.
This bird’s eye view of Yves St. Laurent’s life, family, companions and champions is well done. His talent was clearly seen at a tender age and with others running the business side, he was free to create beautiful clothes. The demons of drugs and depression were present despite success beyond imagination. His story reflects the times of the Seventies, well written, and without sensationalism. Refreshing, poignant and so very different than most everyday living.
A PERFECT BOOK FOR THE COFFEE TABLE. “Vogue on Yves Saint Laurent” is a book by Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni, a Paris-based British journalist and a writer. In less than 200 pages she presents Yves Saint Laurent’s life, career, discusses his huge impact on the world of fashion. The book is an easy read (I finished it in less than 3 hours), full of historical photographs of the designer’s work, studio, iconic fashion shows and magazine covers. The book reads as a magazine, is visually pleasing, and lets the reader take a sneak peak into the life of the influential couturier. I really enjoyed reading this book.
