Lock Creek Time Capsule #3

Lock Creek: Derrick's Time

Rate this book
Everyone Has A Secret - Derrick Decker Has Lots Of Them! Derrick Decker seems to have it all! His winning personality, charming smile and level headed, gentlemanly demeanor make him a focal point in his community. The women want his affection and the guys want to be his best friend. Though it has been that way for most of his life, the hometown hero has made his share of mistakes. Luckily, those mistakes seem to be well kept secrets buried somewhere in his past…but, for how long? Though his image and reputation is important to him now, there was a time when those were the last things on his mind. The indiscretions of the man he was once presents a lot of opportunity to haunt the man he is determined to become. After numerous failed relationships, and seeing no viable options for a love interest, Derrick takes himself out of the dating scene. Then, when he least expects it, a woman enters his world, seemingly immune to his charms. For the first time in his life, he’s found a woman that he just might have to chase after. If he can catch her, she just might be the one that takes him out of the dating scene for good. This journey through the darker side of Derrick Decker gives a more in depth look at the lessons and obstacles that shaped the “mysterious” man Lock Creek thinks they know and love. The only question is will his past stay where he left it, or will this reformed wild child have some explaining to do?

Laney Smith, the mother of two sons, is an American author who was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and raised in Texas. In her teen years, she and her family (including two younger brothers) moved to Colorado. Laney has also lived in Mississippi and currently resides in Southern California. Since a writing career seemed to persistently tug on her shirt tails, Laney eventually decided to try her hand at the art, writing news articles for a local newspaper. After numerous front page features, a new passion was born and the storyteller decided to try her hand at fiction. Her debut work, Lock Creek: One Year’s Time is still one of her most popular, frequently read works, proving that she managed to escape the “first is the worst” curse. In fact, Smith’s Lock Creek series won a “books-to-screen” contest and is currently being adapted for a television series, with other potential “books-to-screen” projects looming on the horizon. At the time of this publication, Laney currently has eight novels to her credit, as well as short stories in two anthology projects (no longer in print). She also released one novel under another pen name. Looking back, Smith’s only regret is that she did not start writing, sooner. When she is not submerging herself in her fictitious worlds, conjuring up riveting stories, Laney enjoys spending time with her family. Whether she is in the mountains, hanging out at tide pools, watching a sporting event, or enjoying some form of art, the writer’s mind is always dreaming up the next page-turning tale. Having accomplished so much in such a short time (Lock Creek: One Year’s Time, her first work, was published July 2014), Laney Smith has found her passion and her calling. The author, with her feet firmly planted, guarantees her readers that she is here to stay.

Derrick Decker is the youngest of three brothers. He’s on the fast track with the grades and stats to guarantee a football scholarship to almost any college of his choice. The future looks bright for Lock Creek Kings Quarterback. Derrick wants to work with the FBI as a CSI and the right college could pave the way into law enforcement....
Derrick is a chick magnet. His best friend Jimmy saw it. Derrick however seems to be oblivious to it. After all, he’s got a beautiful girlfriend.... Amber McRael is raven haired beauty. Thin, long legs and green eyes. She was definitely beautiful, she knew it and used it...She was head cheerleader because she was good. She knew that too and it went to her head. Amber’s popularity started to wane. People were tired of her demanding, superficial attitude.
It cost her the title of Homecoming Queen....Sierra was crowned Queen, Derrick was crowned King.
But before Amber Derrick had a girlfriend named Tasha Daniels. He thought he’d be with her forever. Tasha was his “first” and it was serious for them.
Derrick’s brother Josh had lots of female friends that chased after him, including Amber. When he didn’t pay attention to her, Derrick found her crying. He sat with her to comfort her and cheer her up. Amber then set her sites on him. From then on she seemed to always be around. Derrick didn’t see her as anything more than just a fixture ...she and Tasha became bitter enemies... but then , during some teenage disagreement Tasha broke up with him, embarrassing Derrick in front of everyone. Because his pride was hurt he finally took Amber up on her offer. It quickly became a relationship. One that is going impact his future and his life in a big way.
This story really had me from the beginning. The characters are so true to life. They developed as the story line did and with such detail that I could see them. I was back in high school for a brief time with them. The trials are tribulations that we all go through in one way or another as we make that journey into adulthood go a long way to shaping our future. If we’re lucky we have good friends and family to guide us and just be there even when we think we know it all. You know, until we finally get it, no one knows it all..... this is Derrick’s journey through that teenage jungle of ups, downs, lies, truth, first loves, betrayal, retribution, and finally, hopefully finding the right road.
I do recommend this to 18+ due to adult content.

While reading Derrick’s Time, I almost felt that this should have been book 1. I loved learning more about Derrick before Anne and how he went from being a crazy kid to a responsible, caring adult. His choices for women in his life are somewhat confusing, and once again, is he was anything other than a fictional character, I don’t believe anyone would blame him for slapping a couple of them. These characters are so familiar to me now that I feel they are family. The Time Capsule series has a well-defined story line that weaves its’ way through small town America, similar to the small town of my childhood. I’m very curious to see what happens in the next installment and I am even more convinced this would make a great TV series.
