To keep his sister alive, Sidharth Hazra sends her to the one woman she can’t face.

Saanya Hazra has spent years doing everything right—dutiful daughter, perfect wife, quiet shadow in her family’s empire. But when her abusive husband turns up dead and strangers start testing the locks to her London flat, “doing everything right” stops being enough. With danger closing in and nowhere safe to run, Saanya is exiled to a secluded villa in Switzerland under the protection of her brother’s best friend… and the woman she once secretly adored.

Naomi Smith-Chopra built a fortune dismantling other people’s companies. Precise, distant, and engaged to a golden-boy fiancé who fits her life on paper, she’s spent her career closing deals—not opening her heart. Flying to Geneva with Saanya should have been a controlled risk. Instead, it becomes the one thing she can’t outthink.

When Saanya discovers she’s pregnant with her late husband’s child, she’s faced with an irreversible choice. Naomi’s search for answers pulls them deeper into a web of secrets that could destroy them both.

Their connection is undeniable. Their timing is a disaster. And the truth, when it comes, will cost them both more than they’re prepared to lose.

Two women must decide what they are willing to risk for a love that won’t stay buried.

4.5 stars. The high stakes challenges hooked me from page one. The writing is immersive as I could almost smell spice and flowers. The Indian culture mentions made the book feel rich, even if I felt I was missing out sometimes, but google is my friend. At first, Naomi is a grumpy ice queen, and Saanya's warmth perfectly balances her. Slowly, Ferran draws the reader into a bubble where trust, friendship, and then emotional intimacy develop. It was delicate and warm. Don't expect physical intimacy right away. I loved every second of their relationship. Second chance vibes, forced proximity, and protectiveness fed my soul. Saanya and Naomi are both layered and have heartbreaking pasts. Their past could have been explored deeper, thanks to flashbacks, for instance, but I understand the book was long already. In the end, the satisfying resolution of the plot was a bit hard for me to believe, and I would have liked to see more of Saanya's family's reaction to her dating Naomi, especially Sidhart. But overall, an amazing debut.

This was such a moving story! Wow!!!
Even writing this here, shortly after having finished the book, I’m still so impressed by the way the story unfolded. Being a lover of a good slow burn and high angst novels as well as initial dislike (or enemies) to lovers dynamics, I was already half in love with the novel after reading the premise alone. And it did sweep me off my feet now that I’ve finished it.
I also want to mention how I loved how this story dealt with a lot of heavy topics and how it portrayed them too, especially the abuse. It felt really respectfully done and fit to the character (Saanya) and besides that, it was woven really nicely into the story too like it just fit perfectly for the way the story was told. Speaking about characters, I really adored both Saanya and Naomi. I even have to admit that Saanya kind of stole a bit of my heart with her kindness towards others and her thoughtful mind as well as her love for her own culture (which might I add, was written very nicely too into this story and felt respectfully done too). Though, Naomi, too, was written so beautifully and with so much attention to detail. Here I have to say, though, that I wished we’ve gotten a bit more detail on how her healing process (dealing with the grief of her parents death that she tried to ignore for so long) looked like in the end and I would’ve adored to see a bit more of the two of them settling into their routine with a newborn. But besides that, I really adored the way everything was written. The pace was so so good too, the tension and general way this story conveyed emotions was great! I also really loved the ‘mystery’ part of the things Saanya’s dead husband did. Moreover, I also liked how the side characters were portrayed (Ravi made me laugh so bad at times) and also how nicely Saanya’s pregnancy was included. To be honest, I think I audibly swooned during the Lamaze class scene.
To sum up, this was a really good novel which was beautifully written, had great characters and was overall really detailed, romantic, angsty and so addictive to read about. I would totally recommend if you like to read high angst romances and don’t mind the pregnancy trope.

Thank you to the author who provided me with a free copy of this novel in exchange for a honest review ♡

Oh wow- this story really surprised me! I was expecting a passionate romance, but instead got a thrilling murder mystery. The romance was secondary, but the longing and yearning throughout was quite electifiying.

Just the gist...
Billionaire, ice queen, business woman, Naomi, was asked to guard her best friend's sister, Saanya, who is being hunted by mystery hitmen who had just murdered her husband.

The author brilliantly skims through dark details, but was still able to illustrate deep emotion throughout the story. I felt every moment and it was such a ride!

What a story! Where should I start? Codename Lotus had me hooked right at the first few pages, or rather, right at the book description. I mean… a live-or-dead situation for a woman who needs protection paired with a longtime unrequited childhood crush? This is a match made in heaven for me. A mix of suspense and romance. The best of both worlds.

Before I delve further, please be mindful of the trigger warning. Codename Lotus deals with abuse and homophobia. It’s not the first book I read that explores domestic abuse, but I have never encountered that form of violence. The modus operandi and its impact on Saanya were heartbreaking to see. What a woman she is! So much resilience, so much kindness and warmth despite the horror.
There is nothing more satisfying when the title takes on meaning in the book. The definition of lotus placed at the beginning of the book really helps to understand it. Saanya is truly a lotus.

Naomi is an ice queen. Unwavering, ruthless in affairs with everything set in place for success, but caring and capable to do and drop everything for those she loves. Her struggles with her identity, the erasure, and the refusal to deal with her past made her human. I absolutely loved her homecoming to herself.
Both Saanya's and Naomi’s journeys were poignant.

I can’t finish this review without talking about the cultural elements. The food, the clothes, the traditions. It was a deep dive into a culture that is vaguely familiar to me, and it was awesome to read.
I won’t say more. You will just have to read Codename Lotus.

To say this one hit a little different would be an understatement. I was drawn in by the suspense and stayed for the sizzling chemistry between Saanya and Naomi. I’ll be honest and say I found Naomi really unlikeable at the start, but sunshine Saanya could melt anyone’s icy exterior. This is a strong debut, with a compelling plot, simmering sapphic slow-burn, and some chef’s kiss prose. One to read if you want something a little different!

I received an ARC of Codename Lotus in exchange for an honest review.

If you’re looking for an unpredictable, can’t-put-it-down page-turner…this is it. I genuinely struggled to step away from this book and rejoin real life because I had to know what would happen next. The author masterfully keeps the tension high and the stakes real, delivering twist after twist that had me thinking, “Oh my God, I did not see that coming.”
It’s been a while since a sapphic romance surprised me like this. Too often, the genre can slip into familiar patterns that feel predictable. Not here. These two completely opposite main characters take readers on a journey filled with passion, action, and emotional intensity that refuses to follow a straight line.
The story also handles deeply sensitive topics, particularly around domestic violence (TW)—with care and weight, adding layers of realism and gravity to the narrative. And just when I thought I had a sense of where things were headed, another unexpected development completely shifted the ground beneath the story. I loved being kept on my toes.
The writing is immersive in a way that makes you feel everything alongside the characters, you can see it, feel it, almost even smell it (I wish that were thing). Their love story unfolds as a true slow burn, very slow—but deeply intimate. Despite having known each other for years, they only begin to truly see and understand one another as the story progresses, which makes the emotional payoff even more satisfying.

What an exquisite book.
If this book had a scent, it would smell like the most intoxicatingly enveloping combination of jasmine, coriander and spices.

If you are looking for a light-hearted, fluffy romance, this is not it. This is a beautifully written story of trauma, grief, abuse and feelings shoved deep inside. This is a story that depicts impotence in the face of oppressors and protection in the name of love. But love always triumphs, and powerful bonds are created through trust, courage and vulnerability.

I went into this book not knowing what to expect, but I was hooked from the very beginning, and it only kept getting better. Saanya and Naomi are both troubled MCs, each in their very own way. They are both victims of their past and of the choices that they made or that were forced onto them. However, when unexpected events bring these two women together, that's exactly where the magic happens.

This was such an evocative read, with its aromas, its flavors, its beautifully written descriptions of feelings and the amazing Indian representation, which is something we don't see a lot of. The mystery and the tension will keep you on your toes. And your female rage will definitely be fueled. But at the end of the day, this book feels exactly like coming home.

Bonus points: the lotus metaphor is so beautiful, and Cate Blanchett mentioned??? I was sold IMMEDIATELY.

Ohhhh so good

This book has emotions and intrigue. It is a definite slow burn and has a bit of spice that's mild. The end of the book including the epilogue was heartwarming yet held sadness. So if you are looking for a slow burn with longing, awakenings, love, corporate and illegal activity. Then this is the book you need to read. I honestly really enjoyed it.

3.5 ⭐

Codename Lotus is an angsty, high-stakes romance that follows Saanya—a woman who has spent her entire life sacrificing her own happiness to be the perfect wife and dutiful daughter. When her abusive husband dies and leaves her entangled in the aftermath of his illegal dealings, she’s forced into hiding under the roof of Naomi Smith-Chopra, her brother’s best friend. As danger closes in and proximity blurs the lines between safety and desire, they’re faced with one impossible question: can love survive when everything around you is falling apart?

Saanya completely broke my heart. She’s a widow who has endured more than most, yet she doesn’t let herself crumble entirely. Her resilience felt quiet but powerful. Watching her slowly reclaim her voice after years of repression was deeply moving. Her decision to openly embrace her identity as a lesbian and introduce her partner to her homophobic parents was such a strong, defining moment. And when she finally speaks about the abuse she endured? It hurt in the most honest way. I was also genuinely fascinated by the psychological element involving scent as a form of torture; it was chilling and so unexpectedly written.

Naomi was harder for me to warm up to. She begins distant and guarded, the complete opposite of Saanya’s softness. But slowly, layer by layer, we see her walls start to fall. I loved seeing her reconnect with her roots and allow herself to truly commit. I just wish her coming out journey had been explored more deeply; it felt slightly rushed. Still, her emotional growth throughout the story is clear.

The love story grew on me, but it wasn’t until the last third that it fully resonated, nonetheless the buildup was undeniably there. Their connection develops naturally, with longing that simmers beneath every interaction. The intimacy feels earned and aligned with their emotional progression. I did wish they communicated better instead of pushing each other away during hard moments. Even if their intentions were protective, the avoidance was frustrating. I also would’ve loved more glimpses of them as a couple after the chaos; especially navigating life and parenthood together. That would have strengthened their bond even more in my eyes.

At times, the plot also felt crowded, and I wasn’t always sure where the story was heading. Some sections could have benefited from slower pacing instead of wrapping things up so quickly. Even so, the action and suspense kept me hooked, constantly wanting to know what would happen next.

If you’re looking for an emotionally intense, raw sapphic romance layered with suspense and danger, Codename Lotus might be exactly what you’re craving. It’s a story where love grows in the middle of chaos, fear, and healing—where vulnerability meets high stakes, and every emotional step forward feels earned. If you enjoy messy feelings, slow-burning tension, and a relationship tested by both trauma and external threats, this one delivers that intensity.

Thank you to the author for the early read!

Thank you to the author for this ARC!

I absolutely loved this. It had everything I love and more. The slow burn was amazing. it was a true slow burn and I appreciate that so much. The plot was different from what I am used to in a romance but it made it that much more interesting.

For a brief moment, it was hard to like Naomii. It was only for a few chapters and while I love Ice Queens, for a minute she was glacier. She seemed to be rude and mean for no reason. It didn’t make sense that she agreed to the arrangement when she resented it so much. But like I said, it was a brief time before I started loving her. She was a complex characters with layers and trauma, just like Saanya.

The way the trauma was portrayed was beautifully written with care. Especially the handling of Saanya’s. How the trauma manifested and honestly the type of trauma that she faced was something I hadn’t really read in a romance before.

Codename Lotus had the opposties attract trope and dang, were Saanya and Naomi opposites. But they complemented each other so well. Even before Naomi realized her feelings for Saanya, the chemistry was off the charts. It made when they finally got to together worth it. The slow burn was buuuurning.

While I hate the rejection and homophobia that Saanya’s Baba showed, I respected how the author portrayed it. It was realistic. I think with how progressive today’s society is, we tend to forget that there is still a huge way we have to go. There are so many people that are queer that do not have familial support.

l loved the representation that Codename Lotus had. I enjoyed learning about Saanya and Naomi’s culture. I also appreciated how the author portrayed Naomi’s struggle as being a mixed race woman. To hear about her parents’ marriage and how they both embraced each other’s cultures was beautiful. I’m glad the author didn’t shy away from racism and discrimination that women of color face.

I do wish we could’ve seen more about how Sidharth took the news of his best friend dating his little sister. The bathroom scene was hilarious. There were so many good little moments as well. The mention of the movie Carol and Saanya being a huge lesbian by complimenting Naomi’s hands.

Codename Lotus was such a beautiful, somewhat suspenseful, unique love story. I devoured this story in one day! It is one that I plan on buying the physical copy of and rereading in the future! Again, thank you so much to the author for allowing me the early read!

Book haiku:
One bound by cruelty
The other by childhood loss
Unwrapped together

Saanya haiku:
A pure heart and soul
Her happiness sacrificed
A lotus flower

Naomi haiku:
Ice queen built from pain
Memories denied and buried
The threads unravel

What a debut. Yiliana Ferran had me blearily reading until 3am and then waking up at 6am to finish.

A (very) slow burn romance absolutely packed with yearning, self discovery, bittersweet moments and tension you could at times cut with a knife.

Whilst forced to live together, this doesn’t feel like a forced proximity book, a better description would be acquaintances to lovers with a delicately balanced friendship that builds in the middle. This friendship brings multiple realisations; money does not buy happiness, a companionable relationship cannot work when both parties are not on the same page, and ultimately you are worthy of love and happiness that lifts you in your potential and celebrates who you are.

Aloof and radiating ice queen energy, Naomi is cool, cut throat, and calculated but haunted by a past threatening to break through. Whilst a lot of ice queens thaw for their love and only their love, Naomi’s behaviour is wrapped up in years of unresolved trauma, and as Saanya begins to pick at these bandages, you’re taken on a beautiful journey as she begins to unravel.

At the expense of her own happiness, Saanya has denied who she is to spare family shame, and in the worst possible way she has had her true self used against her in abusive rituals. This woman knows fear, pain, and yet at her core she is quintessentially a pure spirit. It would be impossible not to love this character.

The trigger warnings are appropriate, there are some tough conversations and themes throughout this book, the most prevalent being abuse in every sense of the word. My heart bled for Saanya and I found myself swallowing bile at multiple points throughout the book. But these themes are not thrown in for mere shock value; they are critical to your understanding of how the characters work, and what the true cost has been and could still be.

This is a journey. Packed full of emotion and gripping to the end. Plus, it comes with a stunning cover and an insatiable urge to eat Indian cuisine.

The synopsis immediately pulled me in, and the story held tight long after I finished the final page. Saanya’s situation is dire, and even though Naomi knows better, she still takes her in because she’s the only one who can keep her safe. The tension between them is just as volatile as everything happening beyond the gates of Naomi’s Geneva estate. The vivid details and natural, well-written dialogue really bring the story to life, as does the glacial burn. Now I’m normally not a huge fan of those epic slow burns, but the pacing works perfectly for this story.

The book tackles some heavy themes, including abuse, homophobia, and racism, but it handles them thoughtfully, adding real emotional depth. While those elements could make the story feel dark or overwhelming, they’re balanced with moments of light, hope, and even humor that keep it from feeling too heavy. The dual points of view add even more depth, giving great insight into both Naomi and Saanya’s emotions, thoughts, and actions.

While Naomi and Saanya are total opposites, for much of the story, they clash on just about everything. But that push-pull dynamic between them is what makes it so compelling; the tension practically sizzles off the page. There were a few poignant, heartfelt confessions that made my romantic heart absolutely swoon!

Codename Lotus is an amazing debut that had me completely ensnared! Naomi’s complexity and the way her walls slowly break down around Saanya’s warmth and compassion make for a really captivating emotional journey. Saanya’s courage, determination, and resilience bring so much heart and strength to the story. Their chemistry keeps the tension sizzling from start to finish, and the romance, with its little touches and moments that say more than words, is completely irresistible. On top of that, the cultural details make their world feel alive. With its emotional depth, gripping themes, and suspense, this book isn’t just a read; it’s an experience that stays with you long after the last page. Also, make sure you sign up for Yiliana Ferran’s newsletter, because with it comes a fantastic London chapter that gives you more of Naomi and Saanya!

Going in, I was ready for anything. A brand new (to me) author, a story that sounded interesting, and a book that I got to read early.

Saanya and Naomi are perfect opposites of one another. Saanya is free-spirited, loving, and open, while Naomi is guarded and detached. Watching Saanya slowly break through Naomi's walls was so well written.

I didn't understand some of the cultural significance, but it didn't take anything away from the story. I felt like it was integrated very well, and the importance wasn't downplayed.

Watching ice queen Naomi realize that sunshine Saanya was exactly what she wanted and needed in her life was beautiful. Saanya had longed for Naomi since they were teenagers. Naomi only started to fall for Saanya after they had spent time together as adults.

This story was beautifully written. I loved the build up of the emotions. Even the conflict wasn't out of place. It made a lot of sense, especially when you get to know Saanya.

Knowing there was something in Saanya's past only added to the tension. Naomi giving Saanya a safe place to hide was the perfect touch, even if it added to Saanya's plight.

If you love sapphic awakenings, melting ice queens, and sweet love stories, I highly recommend you check this book out.

And, if you want just that little peek into life after the story, Yiliana has a bonus chapter that is adorable, giving a snapshot of life not long after the end of the main story.

4.5 stars. What a wild ride!!! This book was so richly infused with culture - the descriptions of everything made me feel like I was experiencing it myself. I loved the build up of Saanya and Naomi's relationship. The author did a great job of showing who these characters were and why they fell for each other. I do wish we had gotten a little more about their childhoods growing up. I will say that Naomi was a tough character to like in the beginning. I think the same qualities that make her such an intriguing and interesting character also made her a touch unlikeable at first but that made her unthawing even more exciting to read.

The last 30% was absolute bonkers. There was a ton going on and I knew it had to come to all of that considering the premise of the novel but it did feel jarring considering how much of the book was focused on their burgeoning feelings and character development. The last 10% was just out of this world chaotic as well - that bath scene was like a comedy of errors and just a little out of left field but a nice bit of levity to ease the book into it's final part. I would have liked to see a little bit more of their lives after the got together and how they navigated parenthood, the fallout of the companies being sold, what they ended up doing individually, and how they dealt with Saanya's parents' rejection. But alas, I get that the book was pretty long so it had to end somewhere.

This was a great debut!

just two galpals platonically hitting up a lamaze class together

widow to an abusive husband, expecting mother, and generally nice lady Saanya is in trouble. good thing her brother knows an ice queen she can hole up with for a little while, ignore the toaster oven that just appeared. I thought the romance and suspense elements worked well together which is... not always the case. in other books the romance and suspense will feel disconnected, or the suspense will become vestigial as the author focuses on the romance. but here the domesticity between Saanya and Naomi, and the looming threat of Saanya's enemies go hand in hand because the author invests in both and consciously weaves them together and it's good.

I did think there were some dangling plot points at the end - the epilogue mentions a court case but doesn't elaborate, the evil Scottish guy just kinda disappears. but I really enjoyed Naomi desperately trying to ignore her confusing feelings for Saanya while at a lamaze class with her. also, pregnancy sex

a perfectly lovely sunshine/ice queen with a toaster oven and also people with guns

The tender way she loves her characters shines through gloriously. You can feel the interior worlds of each of these women as if they were your own. She allows you to want with them and for them, especially the yin and yang of each of their personalities and the desire for the melding of the two.

Many of the cultural emotional dealings around trauma feel palpable and are handled with care. Within their own traumas, the need for stoicism and sacrifice feels more interdependent than avoidant. The exploration of their selves and each other gives us the softness we hold dear while under high pressure circumstances gives us the thrill of all of the unknowns. You know what their decisions and vulnerabilities could cost them, and yet you can’t help but want them to throw caution to the wind and heal their wounds with their vulnerability as their strength.

This story made me feel brave and warm as well as very protective of of each of the women with the widely- relatable themes like trauma, grief, and cultural pressures.

Such a stunning book. I deeply appreciated the immense depth the author poured into both leads, the subtle attention to detail, the fluidity of the language, the thoughts all spilling intentionally into this beautiful story. I don’t think I’ve ever come across any media that reaches this level of unfathomable thoughtfulness. I was left speechless by how Ferran captured profound emotions and inner life. While I’ve read other books with similar effects, I’ve never read one that consistently tugged at my heartstrings like Codename Lotus. All that said, I think I’ve found another gem to add to my favorites.

I never expected a book full of murder, intrigue, and danger to feel cozy, and yet, it did. Debut author Yiliana Ferran does a phenomenal job creating a tantalizing world that truly cultivates the senses and enthralls the reader. Her plot twists will keep you guessing, her character development will have you falling for the protagonists and the food descriptions will leave your stomach grumbling with desire.

I read an arc of this debut novel, and I am happy to report that I enjoyed it! This was definitely a slow burn, but I personally love the steady buildup of tension, so that aspect was very enjoyable to me. There was a lot to this story other than the romance, so if you prefer romance books with more intense plots outside of the relationship development, this could be a great book for you!

I look forward to future stories by this author.

we have a new queen of ice queens! Naomi Smith-Chopra is everything you want from an ice queen and so much more. Saanya while having to go through something very intense is learning how to be true to herself again and everyone deserve someone like Saanya in their lives. Watching their love story unfold very slowly is one of the most beautiful things you’ve ever read.
