The veil is torn. Gods have seized control. And Gemma Fowler is on the run.
After learning about Alistair’s cruel manipulations, the last thing she wants is to see him with a crown—but his propaganda and charisma have already swayed droves of people to his cause, human and divine alike. The one thing he’s missing is her, and her sigil prickles with the heat of his growing impatience.
Only Killian’s cool touch helps keep Alistair’s burning control at bay. But with his past, their simmering connection, and the fact that he can now somehow hear her most intimate thoughts…Gemma knows it’s safer to stay away from the brooding water lord.
If only their hearts—and Fate—agreed.
Because stopping Alistair and saving their world will rely on Gemma’s ability to harness Killian’s dangerous, chaotic magic to repair the veil before it falls completely. All that’s standing in their way is secrets, a growing war, and the terrifyingly heated connection between them.
FATEBROKEN is the searing second installment of the FATES trilogy, a sweeping new adult fantasy where the fight between Gods and humans is only just beginning.
We immediately pick up where book one left off. Although it starts a bit slowly, I think it was necessary to give the characters a breather and to get to know the new ones introduced toward the end of the first book. Once it kicks off, there is so much to unpack. We continue to meet new characters, the group is tasked with different missions, Gemma’s and Killian’s relationship continues to evolve, and many more twists are revealed. This was exactly what I was hoping to get from this book. I still enjoyed the first one, but this one took it up a notch. In the previous book, I didn’t feel like there was much at stake, but in this one, you clearly see how much everyone has to lose.
I love how much Gemma grew from the first book to this one. She still had her reservations and didn’t trust easily after the betrayal, but she was able to pick herself back up and do what she had to do to fix the situation. I also loved how she was the optimist between her and Killian. Killian had also gone through so much before he met Gemma that it had been hard for him to fathom that he could ever find happiness. He believed that for every secret he revealed to her, it would eventually push her away. It actually goes the opposite way. She begins to learn more about him and understand why he struggles mentally. She decides to be the optimist between them and is willing to prove him wrong that they can see a happy future for themselves. It’s definitely a slow burn, but they have such fun banter and truly care for each other.
All the side characters grew on me, especially Bastian. In the first book, I found him a little immature, complaining about being hungry all the time and taking everything as a joke. In this one, because of previous events, he realized how serious the situation they are in, which made him take things more seriously, but he doesn’t lose his comedic side. He brings some levity when things get serious, but it’s more toned down, which I appreciated. The other Gods and their Fatewoken were also fun to learn more about.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
As this is book two, I’m keeping things spoiler-free!
Fatebroken picks up right where book one left off, but I was a little concerned at first. The first half was slow, with that classic second-book journey taking a while to get going.
Then it roundhouse kicked those concerns out the window, and I was hooked.
Meddling gods, sunshine versus grumpy, some excellent “fuck it” moments and that “I’ll kill you for this” energy? Yes, please. Add a few plot twists I didn’t see coming, and the second half had me thoroughly entertained.
I really enjoyed this one and was so glad it finished strongly. If it weren’t for the slow start, this would have been an even higher rating!
Fatewoken was the first ARC I ever read, and I have been waiting for this book ever since. It picks up fast where book one left off, and I was not disappointed. This one was even better than the first, and left me just as devastated. Killian remains broody and fantastic and I would not have it any other way. This one took some crazy twists that I was not expecting. I need book three!
I was so excited to get this advanced copy!! Even more excited for the next book after reading it.
The book begins right where the last one ended, and as a reader I should I have reread it. It took me a minute to remember the ensemble cast and all of the many gods. I had forgotten just how many there were. For that reason, I reread the first chapter twice to remember everything, but after that, I was fine.
The world is creative and full of unique mythology. By the end of the book, I had a better idea of the gods’ motivation and what exactly happened. Strong friendships were formed and there was no shortage of banter. I like the idea of the relationship between god and Fatewoken because in most mythologies gods need humans to worship them (pray to them) to thrive so it was interesting to see one “special” human continuing that role even after seeing behind the curtain. Gemma, like anyone in an abusive relationship, had to relearn everything and discover who she actually is.
The first 60% of the book felt a bit long and heavy. I think similar to SJM, it takes a long time to really set the story, which made more sense towards the last 20% of the book. Because of this though, I found myself putting the book down just to take a break from the density of their quest. I would have liked to have seen more explanation of what exactly Alistair was planning. Like yes he wants absolute power, but why? It felt like he didn’t have very solid reasons even after planning it for so long and giving up so much.
I still dislike the “twist” of how Killian and Alistair are husbands. I felt like for a romance, we were deprived of more moments between Gemma and Killian because so much emphasis was placed on Killian’s past and Alistair’s POV. The entire aspect of them should have been something else (like brothers), I think. It still didn’t make sense, even with all of the new info and flashbacks of Book 2. Killian in the flashbacks did not seem like the Killian we know and love so truthfully I really just mentally erased those parts to better enjoy the story. Alistair saying that Killian should beg him on his knees while Killian is pleading for Gemma’s life… Maybe it’s just me, but it felt super distracting to the main couple, and very icky. Like nobody wants an ex cockblocking the main couple, you know?
Gemma’s part of the story is fundamentally tragic. She has been manipulated for so long that I don’t think she really knows who she is. I really liked the ensemble cast. Bastien and Violetta especially. Gemma’s family felt a bit one dimensional. I didn’t feel much emotion when she saw her parents. I just feel like her brother was such a motivation to the whole plot of the first book and he has such a brief appearance on the page.
Now the last 20% of the book made the read worth it to me, and I think the author has a ton of potential. This is an incredibly creative premise and these characters are fun. When Killian and Gemma were flirting or bantering, I was hooked. Bastien really brings so much comedy to the story. I am curious about the gods who turned at the last minute, and want to know what the two new deities/entities telling Gemma about her true past will become. I absolutely loved finding out more about Gemma’s boat experience and her fear of the water because I knew something shady was going on. I love that that was almost done again when she couldn’t stand taking a bath because of the water touching her skin.
I will of course continue the series because I’d like to see where Killian and Gemma end up, but I really hope Alistair the husband is dead and gone. Alistair the Villain needs to rise up so that we can get to the romance part of this romantasy.
Overall, an enjoyable read I would fully recommend. The writing style is beautiful. It feels different and fresh.
Hoping for the best with the next one! I NEED more Killian this time.

Huge thank you to Juliet for this ARC of Fatebroke, the second of the Fates series. I buddy read this one with a friend and must say, the companionship was needed with the crash out I had at the end. If I was to rate it (which I don’t often do anymore) it was easily a 4.5 star read for me.
I loved rejoining Gemma, Killian, and co as they navigate the repercussions of the torn veil and aftermath of loss.
It was slow to start, picking up exactly where Fatewoken ended. I understand the need to slow it down, particularly with the losses endured, but it did take a moment to sink in because I read Fatewoken almost a year ago. There isn’t a woven in recap or reintroduction to the characters so for veteran readers, I’d highly recommend a reread before starting it. If it’s been a while, you might be digging back into memories. For those just jumping into the world, consider reading them back to back.
Slow start aside, once it got going, oh man…It WENT. I enjoyed seeing more depth of the characters and meeting new ones. Our antagonist, Alistair, God of the Sun, wasn’t an antagonist for evils sake but with purpose and I LOVED it.
There were many things I loved about this book, including the twists, the yearning, the character growth. But it was the mental health rep that I admired the most. Though I want to say sooo many things about the mental health representation, I can’t without inadvertently spoiling, so I will just say that I think it was well presented and vividly accurate. Please check the trigger warnings, your wellbeing matters.
Highly recommend getting a copy to see for yourself, Available 12 November 2026!
What a great second installment of Gemma's story! I devoured it, couldn't put it down. The different characters, the relationships between them, the jokes and banter, the PLOT TWISTS... absolutely brilliant.
Gemma is so resilient and resourceful, I love her more and more. And #TeamKillian over here (though is ANYONE #TeamAlistair?).
I have quite a few questions and cannot wait to get answers in Book 3.
this has got to be one of the most underrated fantasies i’ve ever read!! truly yawl i devoured this. swallowed it whole. i am so so obsessed with this world and these characters.
i absolutely LOVED the characters in this even more than in the first book. the villain is scrumptiously complicated, the mmc is delicious and tormented, and the fmc remains tender hearted while being the bravest one of all? YEAH. YEAH I EAT IT UP.
there was so much tension and genuinely so many moments where my jaw actually dropped. there’s gods, there’s humans, there’s grief, there’s yearning, there’s some surprisingly horrific moments…good lawd.
i need everyone to read this.
so grateful to juliet for letting me read this one so early <3 you’re stuck with me bae!
