The only thing more dangerous than falling for a lie is falling for the liar. Don’t look at the desert. Don’t think about the desert. Never step onto the sand. Taera has followed these rules her entire life—until he arrives.
Impossibly gorgeous, with a face masked in magic, Nikolai kidnaps Taera and drags her deep into the dunes. He says she’s powerful and needs to be trained…if she ever wants to see her family again.
Thrust into a deadly school of illusions and lies, Taera can’t trust anyone. Especially not her breathtaking, ruthless captor. Top student and notorious liar, his secrets run deeper than the sand. He’s her worst nightmare—and everything she craves.
The cutthroat Halls of Glass have a mind of their own. Trapped within their looping corridors, Taera is surrounded by hostile students and forced to rely on Nikolai.
Taera knows she shouldn’t fall for his illusions. But magic requires a partnership, and he’s the only mage who can handle her wild, untamed power.
And the only way he’ll help her is if she pretends to be his.
Masquerade of Mirrors is a fast-paced, slow-burn fantasy romance. Taera and Nikolai’s story is for readers who love crackling chemistry, daring escape plans, and as many lies as truths. This book is highly addictive and contains adult content.

Friends, my first ARC read was such a blast. I loved the world that Samantha created, and the magic system was super fun. I was constantly second guessing what was an illusion, and what was real... Our MMC here is a flirty liar that I just really wanted to hug at times. The FMC I wanted to grab by the shoulders and give her a good shake a few times... But I loved their chemistry together. The ending felt a little rushed to me, but overall this was a wonderful treat to read. Thank you so much Samantha for the opportunity to receive this ARC.
“Nikolai is like quicksand: I have no clue when he’ll support me or let me drown.”
✨ Standalone fantasy ✨ Fake relationship ✨ Forced proximity ✨ Dark academia
Taera was always meant for more, but fear and circumstance kept her rooted. When a run-in with mages puts her in Nikolai’s path, she is pulled into a world of illusion and power she never knew she possessed.
“He’s taking me to a place for mages. Magicians. Whatever word they dress the horror in. To become one of them…I’d rather let the desert devour me.”
Taera is a Source. Magic flows from her, raw and dangerous. Nikolai, a Conduit with secrets, sponsors her entry into the Halls of Glass, binding them together through proximity, protection, and a relationship that must seem real.
“Of course, every part of him is appealing — it’s misleading… his ethereal beauty is to lure me closer.”
The magic system is genuinely unique. Sources, Conduits. Talismans, Amulets. Emotion, illusion, and truth tangled so tightly you are never quite sure what is real.
Their connection grows quietly and deeply, tangled in illusion, restraint, and a longing that survives even without trust.
“I can assure you, if I were trying to get you in my bed, you would have noticed.”
What struck me most is that this story does not rely on a looming evil to defeat. Instead, the conflict is internal, emotional, and philosophical. It is about identity, choice, truth, and the lies we tell ourselves to survive.
Taera’s journey is about finding her power, her worth. Nikolai’s is about absolution, about believing he deserves goodness and love, about choosing who he wants to be.
“I crave him like the sum of every small want I’ve ever suppressed. He lights me on fire, makes me feel like I’m in freefall — but like he’ll catch me.”
The writing is stunning, layered, and full of twists that make you question everything you thought you understood.
This book is magic and emotional depth wrapped in glass and lies, and it absolutely stunned me in the best way.
Chaos, vibes, and opinions are all my own ✨ please give credit if you share.
This book needed more time in editing cycles. The FMC is 24 years old and initially seems to be written like Katness, a strong, intelligent provider for her grandfather and brother. But once she enters the Halls of Glass with the magicians, she becomes rather helpless, and lovestruck.
This book would have done better if it didn't attempt to include romance in general but really the author should have considered closed door scenes.
There is no slow burn, no chemistry between the FMC and MMC, and it is only enemies to lovers in the sense that her prejudice/fear of magicians has her saying I hate you until she decides maybe she should let go of that and from then on is in love.
There is a palpable discomfort with the LGBTQ community as a whole and same sex physical intimacy. The FMC repeatedly makes it known that just the thought of same sex partnership absolutely freaks her out and she had zero exposure to non cis-hetero people. Also, I have never read an adult book so focused on closed mouth kissing. It's weird. Finally, the other woman vying for the MMC is named JEZEBEL, obviously she has already had sexual relationships with the MMC. It's just too on the nose.
On the fantasy side of things, we never find out what is up with the desert and why people are afraid of it. I'm not entirely sure what high/low tide is as it relates to the desert either, at one point I thought it was the entering and exiting of sandstorms but the FMC has never touched sand with her feet in all her years living near it and sand would still be there even at "low tide". The general fear/aversion to glass/mirrors that is also unexplained or what blood glass is (we know what it does! but how/why it moves and attacks or it's origin is a mystery)
Basically, this book is long but says very little. The only reason I didn't dnf is because it was an ARC and I felt I should see it to the end.
Thank you Samantha Hartwood for providing me an ARC of this book!
I devoured this book. I loved the magic system, the characters, the romance, the story. The story had great pacing to keep me interested and excited. I didn't want to put it down. I am so impressed this was Samantha's debut novel!

This book is for you!
Recognizing her raw potential, illusion magician Nikolai kidnaps Taera and forces her into training at the Hall of Mirrors (a magical academy with a mind of its own). Doing so goes against everything Taera believes in. However, if she hopes to ever see her loved ones again she needs to play along with the MMC’s agenda. Trust no one, do not believe your senses, and most importantly, don’t fall for the liar 😈

As my first ARC read, I could not have lucked out more. Beautifully written and full of twists, this book drew me in immediately! I think the thing I love the most is the Hall of Mirrors itself. I adore a magic academy book and this magical school is like no other I have read (Hogwarts meets Scholomance with a sprinkle of mind-bending labyrinth vibes.) The tension between the main characters was intense, with vicious but delicious banter. This book absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR this Winter!
✨Release date is February 17th ✨
Thank you so much to Samantha Hartwood and her team for allowing me to participate in this ARC event!! (My collection needs the audiobook ASAP pretty please 😍)
Masquerade of Mirrors by Samantha Hartwood completely swept me away!! From the very first page, I was pulled into a world of lies, illusion, magic, and mystery that felt unlike anything I’ve read before. This story was so original and creative!
Every time I picked this book up, I was transported into the desert sands and the dazzling, dangerous beauty of the hall of mirrors. 🏜❤️🔥🪞
Taera and Niko stole my heart immediately. I knew things were about to get interesting! They don’t trust each other… but they begin to understand each other and their connection builds slowly, wrapped in tension and quiet longing. The kind where every glance lingers and every moment feels sharp and soft all at once.
This is a true enemies-to-lovers slow burn where the yearning practically spills off the page.👏🏻👏🏻
And the magic marble? Obsessed. Giggling. Kicking my feet. I never thought a marble would bring me so much laughter and joy! 🤣🤣🤣
Samantha, thank you for trusting me with your story and for sliding into my DMs to bring me into this world ❤️🔥 Being part of the group chat and experiencing all the updates and chaos made the journey even more special. It truly meant a lot to feel included in the process and get to know you along the way!!!
Ohh man…where do I start?! 😭 I received this ARC from the author and this book was amazing and has easily become one of my favorite books! 🥰Samantha is talented and with this being her first book…it had my mind blown away with how good this book was! I loved how unique the story was and how she described everything in such great detail was the best part!✨ It made it very easy for me to visualize everything aspect of the story. Nikolai…has me in a chokehold!!! Taera was so sweet🥹loved her! I will easily recommend this book to anyone who loves dark academia romantasy, slow burn and morally grey MMC!!
I was so beyond honored to receive an ARC copy prior to release, here are my honest thoughts:
I smiled. I raged. I ugly cried. And somewhere in between, this book completely swept me off my feet and dropped me straight into the desert along with it. Sunburned, breathless, and emotionally wrecked
The twists and turns had me second guessing my own reality for a minute and questioning everything spoken in this book. It plays with your mind, tugs at your emotions, and refuses to let go until the very last page. The second perspective truly gave my brain, and heart so much clarity.
Such an amazing and well written piece that I honestly believe everyone needs on their tbr. Especially if you’re looking for an incredibly immersive read to get lost in. Let’s be real, reality is overrated, I’d rather be in the desert, snatched up by a dreamy magician. ;)
This is the first instalment in the Halls of Glass series.
Taera has spent her whole life residing in an impoverished village skirting the desert sands. She knows to obey the rules: don't look at the sands, don't think about the sands, and certainly don't trespass onto them. But all that alters when she is kidnapped by Nikolai and dragged deep into the dunes, forced to train alongside those she has been taught to both fear and revere.
this was such a fun romantasy story. Elements of it were predictable, but I often find this to be the case with the genre and it didn't ruin my enjoyment to anticipate the twists before they appeared. The sexual tension, however, was a smidge too prevalent and instantaneous for my personal taste and I didn't really appreciate these elements being thrust into the storyline so soon and before I felt I knew who the characters even were. If this is your jam, then this book will be the one for you!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, Samantha Hartwood for this opportunity.
Masquerade of Mirrors is truly a unique experience and a must read. The world and the magic really make this book stand out. This book was a 5⭐️read for me.
I can probably count on one hand the amount of books I have read that are set in the desert. Between that, and the Halls of Glass, the world was amazing and really caught my attention.
Illusion magic, when done well, can have almost endless possibilities. Not only did the author did a great job explaining it, there were some stunning scenes and fun descriptions of outfits. I really liked the theory of sources and conduits (As much as I would like to think I would be a conduit, when I took her quiz, I was a source😆)
The banter in the book was great, and there were so many memorable characters, some good, and some… not so nice. There were lies, emotions, loss, determination… all kinds of emotions, and you could feel each of them.
The truth-teller was a fun scene and one of my favorites along with several scenes that were just pure magic 😉
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice: 🌶️ Yes Kindle Unlimited: ✅ Yes (Releases 2/17/26) Recommend to my Book Bestie: yes yes yes!! ARC Review
The desert. Beautiful. Dangerous but alluring. Don’t listen to its call. Don’t go to the sands.
The magic system and emotional depth of both Nikolai (MMC) and Taera (FMC) is extremely unique and rubiks cube complex. The nature of Niko’s magic 🪄 makes it difficult to comprehend through most of the book of where illusion ends and truth begins. Niko & Taera gravitate around one another with chemistry that literally crackles… but at the same time you will want to slap Niko around quite a bit. I did 😏 Slooooowwest of burns 🔥but the thick as peanut butter tension, snappy banter, and dual yearning is the perfect salve. Taera is a stubborn spitfire and Niko is a balanced charmer shrouded in beautiful mystery.
The Halls Of Glass… can’t really say much without spoiling it. Be prepared for a wild ride. This book left me emotionally frayed… but don’t all the good ones? It’s a truly enchanting read, world building, heartbreaking back stories, and vivid imagination brought to the page as romance blooms ♥️ Want to be enthralled by the Halls…?

I enjoyed this but certain things are holding me back from giving it more stars. I devoured the first 75% and the last 15% made me just skip over it and wish the characters had more time with the revelations and the feelings.
I really struggled with the lies of Niko, like really struggled, and with Taera just taking him back like that? I dunno just felt like it came to a crashing halt, and then it was fixed. Like his POVs we got to see his soft side and the love he had for Taera and then for the ball to come around and he acts like that? Just pissed me off 😂😂 I wanted more of a character ARC for Niko and for Taera to suffer more... Lol sadist here.
But Taera seeing her go from someone who is sheltered, small town and scared of living. Seeing her become more grown up (she was 24, but felt like everyone was 18/19), it was great to see her grow into herself more.
But the world was fantastic and the magic systems was super unique. The friendships made feel that found family vibe. I want to know more about the desert!!!!!
Just felt like some plots just didn't hit, the academia side of things weren't super strong in the plot and I still want to know more about why everyone was scared about her being untrained and older, I want to know more and not have the unknowns still there. Overall a great book, especially for a debut and will enjoy reading more of Samantha's works down the track! 🫶🏻
Thank you so much to the author Samantha Hartwood for letting me get an ARC copy of this magical book! 5/5 🌟
Holy crap what a beautifully written, devastatingly elegant and painted vision of a story this was!
The world building? Immense and inviting. The characters? Complex and conniving. The magic system? Illusions and impossible. The academia? Yummy and left you yearning for more!
📖 Whatever you do, don’t look at the desert. Taera has been warned her entire life of the desert and magic that exists there. But it is something that calls to her, whispers to her very being. And as fate shall have it, she gets both rescued and… well kidnapped by a magician and brought to the dangerous academy, Halls of Glass, where she is forced to face her greatest fears. 📖
The magic system is nothing I’ve seen before, introduced in a way that is comprehensible and the world we’re invited to captivates me completely. The danger and high stakes behind every corner? The tension and banter? Yes, please!!
Tropes you probably love: 🪞 Forced proximity 🖤 Morally grey MMC 💗 FMC learns as she goes 🪞 Fake dating 🖤 Touch her and… 💗 Dual POV 🪞 A very cool magic system
So I just finished this book. I was given a advance copy to readand review. When I say run don't walk to get your copy I mean it! This book was so good. I loved the world of magicians and illusions. The story line is so good with lots of plot twist! The storyline between Niko and Taera is amazing. The secret and lies will have you trying to guess what the hidden plot is and you will be surprised at the end! If you want a read that is different then anything else read this book. You want be disappointed! It just released today too! #Samanthahartwood
This was an exciting Dark academia romantasy, with unique magic, romantic tension, forbidden quests, and hostile environments. Taera is kidnapped and held captive by Nikolai, forced to train with him and control her magic, and to pretend to be his. She can't trust anyone, everything is dangerous, and she is helplessly reliant on her captor. I enjoyed the tense atmosphere and enemy to lover tension, the masquerade ball, the daring escapes, and the magic systems. This is a great standalone adventure full of secrets and danger.
Source or Conduit? When reading Masquerade of Mirrors, consider which type if magician you would like to be?
Magicians in this world are illusionists, so when anything could be fake... how can you tell what is real? This is the struggle the FMC faces as she is thrust into a world she did not choose to be a part of. But in the end, if given the choice, would she choose to leave?
Very early on in reading this book I could tell it will become a cult favourite for readers around the world and I am honoured to have received an ARC copy from Samantha. So go on and join in on this world of illusion!
ARC review I really loved the beginning of Masquerade of Mirrors. The world-building is strong, the magic system is intriguing, and the premise grabbed me immediately. Taera is compelling early on: she’s responsible, smart, and clearly has a lot at stake with her family. The idea of sources and conduits, talismans, amulets, and the desert’s mysterious danger made the opening feel fresh and high-stakes. I was genuinely invested.
Unfortunately, once the story moved into the school setting, I started to lose interest. The plot slows considerably, and the focus shifts to catty student drama, flirting, and gossip. While the magic is still there, the teaching and training parts feel underdeveloped, and the tension from the beginning gets diluted massively. Taera and Nikolai’s interactions, while sometimes playful and flirty, often felt repetitive and childish. There are sparks, but the constant forced-proximity and teeny-gossip-style interactions made it hard to stay invested.
That said, the book has real strengths. The magic system is rich and unique, the desert and the Halls of Glass are atmospheric, and the stakes regarding Taera&Nikolay`s powers keep a baseline of tension. The ending resolves most threads neatly, but I won`t spoil it. Some of the twists with her mom and the significance of the relics were good.
Overall, I’d give it three stars. While the beginning hooked me with a unique magic system and a mysterious, dangerous world, the story shifts into a school setting that felt more like social drama and flirty interactions than high-stakes adventure. It’s a bit frustrating to see all that intriguing world-building and magic be wasted like this, but the book still has moments of clever world mechanics, suspense, and romance.
ARC read - this is my completely honest review. This book had me absolutely hooked. The dual POV worked so well, and the world itself is incredibly rich and unique, I felt fully immersed from the beginning. The academy setting paired with the magic system was fascinating, and everything felt thoughtfully built rather than overwhelming. The characters and their dynamics were easily one of my favorite parts. The enemies-to-lovers tension (my favorite trope) was done really well, and the dialogue felt natural and engaging throughout. Some of the raw emotions genuinely got to me, diving into grief and self acceptance. I was constantly thinking about this story when I wasn’t reading, dying to see how everything would play out. And that twist? Damn! Completely caught me off guard in the best way. The ending was beautiful and left me feeling genuinely satisfied. This is my first five-star read of 2026, and I already know it’s going to stick with me for a long time.
As an ARC read for a debut author, Masquerade of Mirrors by Samantha Hartwood delivered on all fronts. The pacing is perfection...exciting from the very first chapter, thanks to the mysterious allure of the desert, the unique magic system built on illusion, and a slow burn - he's her captor - romance that will leave you breathless.
The story follows a young woman, Taera, who's spent her entire life surviving the harsh and unpredictable shifting sands of the desert...and Nikolai, an enigmatic magician from the glittering Halls of Glass, searching for answers to his quest for more power.
Hartwood drops us into an intriguing story world, a barren and dangerous desert that fills the inhabitants of Taera's village with dread - the desert steals souls.
Raised to avoid the whispering sands at all cost, Taera relies on her grit, determination, and knowledge of herbology to support her ailing grandfather and feisty younger brother. But the desert calls her. A constant and unwelcome urge to answer plagues Taera. What exists beyond the safety of her home?
Magic and those who wield it are feared in this world, so when handsome and rakish Nikolai "rescues" Taera from the clutches of a violent mage...she doesn't trust him. And rightfully so. Nikolai is the most powerful magician of his generation, cloaked in layer after layer of illusion, and Taera must guard her mind and her heart from his lies.
Thrust into the Halls of Glass against her will, Taera quickly learns that the one thing she fears most is actually lurking beneath her skin.
With an intimate magic system and an entertaining cast of characters, Masquerade of Mirrors delves into the nature of humanity, and the lengths people are willing to travel for power, prestige, control, and desire. In a world where you can have anything, be anyone, where do you draw the line? When you cannot trust your eyes...can you trust your heart? These are the questions both Taera and Nikolai must answer.
At first glance, Masquerade of Mirrors is exactly what it seems...an enthralling fantasy filled with magic, illusions, and intrigue; but upon deeper reflection what Samantha Hartwood has actually gifted us is a hauntingly beautiful tale of what happens when we allow the torment of our past to write our future...and the indomitable spirit of love and its ability to redeem even the most lost of souls.
Hartwood masterfully portrays/explores the tenuous journey of two broken individuals searching for themselves. Nikolai is guarded and manipulative, Taera naive and vulnerable.
While Nikolai checks all the boxes for morally grey, smolderingly hot MMC who is battling inner demons...Taera is unique in that she doesn't fit the typical romantasy FMC archetypes.
Most times we're presented with the predictable growth arc of an unassuming and delicate heroine turned warrior leader that commands respect...or the fiercely independent killer assassin who realizes she doesn't need to take on the world alone.
So, I was deeply moved by the raw and honest portrayal of Taera - her fear and naivety, her sexual inexperience, her self-doubt. She felt so relatable and real on the page. Too often FMCs, even those caught off guard by the sexy MMC, immediately rise to match the vibe, the flirting, the sexual tension…forgoing any initial reservation. Not Taera.
I will admit, I initially found myself annoyed with Taera for her overly shy and awkward demeanor...I kept waiting for the predictable FMC archetype to take over. But, seeing Taera hold true to character through the entire novel...the consistency...something literally shifted in my brain. I left this book feeling like I'd actually read a believable romance between two characters with an extreme power imbalance, such as that between Nikolai and Taera. All Taera's inner thoughts, her embarrassment, her timidity, her shame...felt so real...because honestly, if we aren't lying to ourselves, that's how 90% of women feel in relationships and the bedroom.
And Hartwood doesn't stop there. If she is breaking norms with her uncannily relatable FMC...her depiction of masculine love/yearning/doubt/self-loathing/shame/grief is absolutely jaw-dropping! Nikolai's redemption arc wrecked my soul - a new level of ugly crying unlocked. That's how you write an MMC.
Masquerade of Mirrors is a must read. Samantha Hartwood will charm you with her words. And much like the duality of the illusions surrounding this tale, you will close the book forever changed by the duality of an entertaining surface plot that has you kicking your feet…and the underlying reflections on truth, lies, reality, perception, forgiveness, and love that will leave you staring at the wall.

I finished it in just 2 days!! Once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down 😍
It took me about 20% to really get invested, but after that I absolutely flew through the book!! I loved the dual POVs, especially getting the MMC’s softer side at times. The friendships and side characters were such a strong point, loved them!
I do wish the last 15% was a bit more fleshed out as it felt slightly rushed I would have loved more plot and world building, especially about the desert and its history. That being said the vibes were great!!
Even with a few things I wanted expanded, I still really enjoyed this!!
Choose this book is you enjoy • Dual POV romance • Strong friendships & side characters • THE VIBESSSSS ♥️
“How reckless would it be-how *deliciously* reckless-to take what I want, what we both want?”
Fantasy • Fake Relationship • Forced Proximity • Illusion Magic • Dark Academia • Banter!! Yearning! Slow-ish burn
I really enjoyed this book! The writing was beautiful, the world building was there enough to give you clear setting, without eating up too much of the story. I have mixed feelings about dual POV’s, especially with fake relationships, but THIS is how you do it if you’re going to do it. I would have loved to get a little more into the academic part of their magic system, because it was a unique magic system and it really had my interest!
This was a totally unique story and it had me utterly engaged! I was sneaking glances at my kindle until I could finish it! This was a fantastic book as a standalone, if the author decides to create a series of standalones in this universe, so the magic and the setting can continue to develop and be explored, I would 10000% come along for the ride!
This book was gifted as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All foot-kicking giggles, snorts, tears, swoons and opinions are my own.✨
Even though I did not enjoy this book I want to thank the author for providing me with an ARC for the purposes of this review. If I hadn't received this as an ARC, I most likely would have DNF'd it around the 45% mark. I am glad I did push through to the end just because one of my biggest issues with the book did get significantly better and I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't made myself keep going.
That being said, the issue in question was some rampant queerphobia/transphobia going on around one of the characters and I could see many readers DNFing the book where I almost did. Our FMC tells us she comes from a very repressed and backwards village (her literal words), so when she meets the only genderqueer non-binary character in the book, she spends their entire first meeting making comments about trying to discern if they are actually a man or a woman underneath the more androgynous appearance they have chosen to present with. There are 4 instances within the first meeting of queerphobia/queerphobic language. Lines such as "Omi's voice is quiet and doesn't clear up my confusion either way about whether they're a man or a woman." The second time these characters interact there is still some gender queer/trans phobic language going on as the FMC tries to decide if Omi's legs are shaped more like a man's or a woman's. At this point if I had DNF'd like I was tempted to, I would have assumed the character stayed prejudiced towards them in this way the entire time. Where I will give the author credit, is after this, the FMC dispenses with her weird obsession of determining what Omi's sex is underneath their appearance and they/them pronouns. She also never uses the wrong pronouns once informed, and by the end of the book this is her closest friend. I do think the author successfully portrayed good character growth here of someone who came from a sheltered and "backwards" place learning to be more open and accept people who are different from what she grew up around.
However, there are still similar issues throughout the book that rubbed me the wrong way. The main one being there seems to be some internalized misogyny going on because women embracing their sexuality in this book quite often has negative connotations while the MMC is super open about his promiscuity and wide variety and number of partners but he is only ever seen as more charming/suave/desired for having done this. When the FMC ever talks about acting on her sexual desire, it's her "dark influences" and other negative language. Also the female antagonist who is portrayed as the most overtly sexual and has slept with the MMC is LITERALLY named Jezebel. Things like this gave me the major ick, WOMAN ACTING ON SEXUAL DESIRE IS NOT INHERENTLY DARKER OR WORSE THAN A MAN DOING SO!
There were concepts about this fantasy world that intrigued me, the very first page of the book had me enthralled with just one line of text on a page where a map was supposed to go. "To readers who enjoy maps, I regret to inform you that no cartographer of the desert has ever returned." That is so badass and immediately gives such an air of mystery, danger, and suspense to the desert backdrop of this book. The entire novel we talk circles around this and never deliver on it. Can I tell you why this desert is so mysterious and dangerous aside from all the obvious factors regarding a regular desert? No. Can I tell you why it's inherently magical? No. The characters don't even know and no one seems to care enough to answer these questions. There was so much promise in this world that was just never delivered upon.
The magic system is also wildly inconsistent and by the end of the book also kind of ridiculous. The book builds up "illusion magic" to be more than what we would typically think of regarding illusions. Illusions are not just facades, they are corporeal and tactile. 90% of the book the characters are wearing illusory clothes but if you run your hands along the fabric you would feel them actually there and not just feel past them to the wearer's skin. The stronger the magic user, the more elaborate or higher number of illusions they can maintain at once. Yet at the end of the book, the FMC literally overcomes an obstacle by being like oh wait it's an illusion, if I don't believe it's there then it's not real and literally gets to walk through what used to be a solid object. So all the illusions and magic being practiced in this school only hold up because they all accept the lie that is their magic and suspend their disbelief to make their illusions real. Surely this means outside in any other context, your magic is immensely weakened because everyone can just remind themselves "it's not real" and nullify your creations. There was a very interesting connection between mindfulness practices and magic in this book which I thought would be fascinating if explored further but it was only really briefly mentioned once or twice.
The whole setting of the magic school, the Halls of Glass, also just felt like a bit of a joke as the MMC is constantly outwitting the teachers and cheating on all assignments constantly and faking the FMC's way through the school as well. I get he is supposed to be some sort of phenom or prodigy at magic, but when there is not a single moment where a professor or authority figure or advanced magic user of ANY KIND isn't made to look like idiots by one of the students then how am I supposed to have any faith in this as an institution? Not to mentioned we never have any concrete descriptions of what they do in classes, and even the exam they showed lasted like 60 seconds if that and felt like nothing was happening half of the time. The "partner" section was literally the MMC and FMC standing holding hands for like one paragraph where nothing discernible happened and they were declared to pass.
There were also various continuity errors that made me wonder how much time was spent editing. For example, one part describes our FMC walking down a hallway behind the MMC and stops abruptly bumping into him because he stopped without warning due to a dangerous obstacle ahead. After some exposition where he tells her what the danger is, it is then written as her looking BEHIND THEM at the danger and they run on ahead. Quite literally the danger was in front of them moments ago on the same page so unless you teleported and forgot to tell us how did it get behind you? There were also times where the FMC would think something internally, the MMC would verbally respond and she would not address this or think nothing of it. If he was reading her mind she should have reacted to that as it would have been a new phenomenon for her, as well as she was distrustful and afraid of him at the time it was happening so he would not be welcome in her mind. It is discussed he can read emotions but never stated or implied he can read her thoughts so I am only left to believe it's a continuity error.
Despite all this, my BIGGEST gripe with this novel has to be how absolutely weak-willed and unintelligent our FMC becomes as soon as she sets foot in the Halls of Glass. Before she gets kidnapped by the MMC, our protagonist is portrayed as resourceful, intelligent, determined, and pretty physically capable. All this goes out the window after her kidnapping and she just becomes the annoying damsel in distress helpless female. The constant cycle of the relationship between the two characters had me seeing red. He refuses to inform her on ANYTHING that is going on after she is abducted and brought to what might as well be another PLANET compared to everything she knows. Then every time she makes a mistake through her ignorance of her new environment he punishes her for it. MAYBE IF YOU EVER GAVE HER ANY INFORMATION SHE COULD MAKE MORE INFORMED DECISIONS! But she doesn't help this either. She finally gets him to honestly answer some of her questions, and rather than ask questions that could help with her survival, or help her intuit her captor's true intentions, she just starts asking questions about lore as a way for the author to get that info to readers, or literally about petty drama with the other girls at the school. How was this the intelligent and quick thinking character we met in the beginning? The rest of the time it is just the MMC either lying to, or straight up harming, the FMC and then every time it is revealed he has lied or mistreated her YET AGAIN she is always surprised. At one point when they are arguing he even asks her what he did to make her so angry? I literally OUT LOUD said in my living room "Oh I don't know maybe KIDNAPPED HER IMPRISONED HER ASSAULTED HER TORTURED HER STOLE FROM HER OBJECTIFIED HER IN FRONT OF STRANGERS AND LIED TO HER 24/7??" At no point was their relationship believable from the FMC's end and every time she was mistreated she would be angry about it for like 1 paragraph and then get over it and continue falling for him only to be shocked and surprised like the Pikachu meme THE NEXT TIME he repeated the only behaviour he has demonstrated to her the entire book. There were some great and creative ways the author used their magical backdrop to put the characters in some popular tropes like forced proximity, only one bed, and when they get hexed and have an annoying device that highlights every time they lie for 24 hours so they have to be honest with each other. Unfortunately I couldn't enjoy any of these because there characters were just so infuriating and there was nothing in the world strong enough to make me suspend my disbelief that Taera, our FMC, could ever develop even one speck of trust for Nikolai, or MMC. Not to mention some of the other relationships were completely nonsensical. We first meet one of the supporting characters and she is literally slamming a door in the main character's face because she doesn't want Taera there and has no desire to even say one word to her. The next time they interact she is covering for her and acting like her friend and nicknames her "Tae-tae." Nothing happened to make her attitude shift so dramatically and it made absolutely zero sense.
While one grave error was righted by the end of this book, the rest were not and this was one of my least enjoyable reading experiences in a while.
Very much devoured this book. It had a hooking pace with matching development. The magic system was fresh. And it had an irresdescent, opulent, sandy vibe I could get behind. It was truly a dazzling read.
There are some things that personally interfered with my immersion on this read-- referring to family members by just their familial relationship terms that were Mom and Gramps--just pulled me out of vibe. not that everything needs a new made up name in fantasy, but the trigger me out of high fantasy. I also felt like there could have been a different name for "sex magic" that emulated something more than cheap pleasure--because it was more. Also pulled me out of the illusion, but I had a very prude upbringing.
And then there were somethings I wanted more of, didn't even need to be specific answers. But more clues on what the desert is and it's draw. Why are some more powerful and naturally gifted? What is going on in the rest of this world?
And then things I could have had less of or delivered differently: the bullying. It felt so junior high for these young adults. Outcasts and some rumor building or eve n direct cruelty would have been welcome in an enclosed environment. But without context of why these young adults would be so juvenile... it just rubbed at me. Especially the possessive fighting over a guy--cat claws raised kind of thing.
I would have liked to have seen more independence from Taera. More self discovery of information vs everything being hand fed to her and development in her magic.
Thank you for the ARC copy, I will be looking out for your next one! (And keeping an eye out for special editions for hoarding purposes.)
3.5 ⭐ Don't look or think about the Desert? Say what, gave me some Dune vibes which immediately hooked me on. It's alive and unpredictable and no one (me as reader) truly understands it's nature. So... Mysterious... That being said, what is the plot behind this desert? I never got the full picture of it. I GOTS TO KNOW.
FMC, Taera (beautiful name) My overall opinion of her was she Street smart but not book smart. I loved that despite all the illusions and lies thrown at her, she kept true to her core values and morals till the end. MMC, Nickoklai What a cheeky flirty man. Unfortunately due to his illusions, I was very on edge with the things he says - were his intentions true or just fake ? The relationship between the main characters was fun and flirtatious, reminding me of teenage love.. 😂
The magic system was interesting and unique, haven't come across this kind of magic before. Sources, conduits, amulets/charms but that was all I really got from it. I would have liked to learn more about what was done in school.
Overall, I enjoyed the story and magic system. I giggled, eye-rolled, sighed and was heartbroken too. What a rollercoaster for my emotions. I would have liked a little more history behind that desert and see Taera grow during her academic year. A huge thank you to Samantha for giving me the opportunity to see this world and characters.
When the author reached out to me directly to share this ARC and have me on her team, I wasn’t expecting my mind to be flying and my heart to be racing. I survived physically, but this juicy labyrinth of a tale has my heart, and I think I left pieces of my soul in the Masquerade of Mirrors.

I do wish there was some deeper world building around the details of the desert and what happens. Maybe in the second book. The magic system was really interesting I just wish Taera’s powers came on a little quicker. This was the slooooowest of slow burns when it comes to romance. I didn’t know whether I wanted to love Nikolai or hate him with all lies he told. The heartache at the masquerade ball broke me! I completely felt for Taera in that moment. She was too trusting not only with him but with others.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author for letting me read and review the ARC for this book

Thank you to BookSirens for an advanced reader copy of this book!
First and foremost, I enjoyed the magic system in this! The concept of illusionist magic and magicians made me keep flipping the pages and I loved the mystery of the academy. I liked the setting in the desert and the world building that went into this.
I also liked the fmc Taera her heart is pure and I loved her empathy. That being said, Nikolai didn’t deserve her, and how she puts up with him I’ll never know. Even after reading everything, he’s just someone I could never warm up to. I understand why he did what he did, but my opinion of him didn’t change much over the course of the book. However I did love Taera and how much she cared despite everything he did, she’s truly such an angel!
The magic system and setting in this is truly what makes it shine and I was hooked! I’d absolutely dive back into this world!
I received an ARC for this book and here is my review. Masquerade of Mirrors by Samantha Hartwood completely exceeded my expectations. I did not anticipate feeling this much while reading—and honestly, how dare she do that to me 😭 For a debut romantasy, this book is seriously impressive. From the very first few sentences, it had me hooked, and I genuinely couldn’t put it down. It delivers everything I crave in romantasy: dark academia vibes, sharp banter, delicious tension, found family, a morally grey MMC (hello, Nikolai 👀), a smart and strong FMC (Taera), and richly developed side characters that actually matter. What truly sets this book apart is the worldbuilding and magic system. The Halls of Glass and the illusion magic feel fresh, imaginative, and thoughtfully constructed—nothing recycled or predictable here. I also loved the dual POV, which is quickly becoming my favorite way to experience a story. Being inside both characters’ heads made the emotional stakes hit that much harder. And let’s talk about the romance. Taera and Nikolai are everything. Their relationship is layered, messy, and deeply emotional—loving someone despite their flaws, damage, and secrets. I’m also realizing that morally grey men who are a little broken inside might officially be my weakness. It’s genuinely hard to talk about this book without spoilers because the ending is everything. My heart shattered for these characters. The lies, the betrayals, the truths uncovered—it’s all gut-wrenching in the best way. Overall, Masquerade of Mirrors was an incredible read that I will recommend to absolutely anyone who will listen. There’s just enough spice, and it’s so refreshing to find a standalone romantasy that wraps up in such a satisfying, emotionally devastating way. If you loved On Wings of Blood or Zodiac Academy, this one needs to be on your TBR—immediately.
