Rate this book
A second chance at happiness? Only of her own making…

Widowed Lady Sabine Cogan married well in an effort to escape her fractured family. With a sickly husband who needed constant nursing, happiness wasn’t in the cards for her, and neither was love. When her husband’s title passed to his third cousin, she washed her hands of the whole thing, took her dowager settlement, and promised herself a life of freedom and of discovering what made her happy.

The thrill of adventure? Yes. Romance? Not so much…

Grant Blackwell, Duke of Mowbray, enjoyed his life. He did as he pleased and with whom and didn’t much care about the consequences. Marriage? He’d get around to it. There were women to seduce and bets to place and fine wine to drink. But then a horse-riding accident with the seemingly precipitous arrival of a beautiful widow makes him reconsider his life.

Fun? Adventure? Seduction? All yes. Falling in love? Not her…

Sabine never seriously considered engaging in a seduction. But with every stolen kiss that made her crave more, she reevaluated her options. A heated affair with the handsome duke? Not her worst choice in life. Stealing kisses is one thing but spending time with the brilliant and bold Sabine steals Grant’s breath and tempts him like no other.

Can they find their future together? Or will their fears of being hurt and abandoned crush any hope of a happy future? If you love Regencies that Opposites AttractSecond Chance at LoveReformed Rake / Rake Falls in LoveDowager Freedom / Widow's AwakeningReluctant Lovers / Love Wasn’t the PlanHe Falls FirstThen Lady's Seduction is for you!

This third book in The Lady's Rogue Companion Stories was a delightful historical romance. It had an engaging, well blended story with adventure, excitement, wonderful characters, and a tender heartfelt romance. I enjoyed their light-hearted banter, strong, passionate chemistry, and how satisfying the ending was. I highly recommend it!

This was a cute, quick read that, despite being the third book in a series, can easily be picked up without having read the first two. Everything you need to follow along is technically there, which made it a nice, low-commitment read.

So why only three stars?

The biggest issue for me was the pacing of Sabine and Grant’s relationship. They meet, fall in love, and get married in what feels like the span of a month… maybe two. Because of that, I never really felt like I knew either of them beyond a surface level, which made some of their choices harder to fully buy into.

We’re told repeatedly that Grant is a rake and a rogue, Sabine's friend Julia certainly makes sure to remind her of that fact, and even Grant himself admits to having a steady stream of women in his past, but we’re never actually shown that side of him. Aside from some light flirting with Sabine, it’s obvious pretty early on that he wants more from her than just another conquest, which made all that buildup feel a little hollow.

And then there’s Sabine. We’re told she married the first man who offered just to escape her father, that her father was cruel, that one of her brothers was disinherited… but we’re not given much detail beyond that. Maybe some of this was covered in earlier books, but even a brief recap would have gone a long way here. The same goes for her late husband, we’re told he was cold and disinterested, but since we only meet Sabine after his death, we never actually see that dynamic either. Even small details, like her hosting lavish dinner parties, feel a bit disconnected when we don’t really understand what her life looked like at the time.

However, there were elements I genuinely enjoyed. Sabine and Grant’s early banter was fun, and I loved the moment where Grant shows up with what is essentially an edible arrangement for her horse after his own spooked it. Honestly, that was probably one of the highlights for me. But once their relationship shifted from getting to know each other to sneaking around and engaging in scandalous behavior that could have easily ruined her reputation, the story lost some of its charm. Especially because, for someone so determined to make her own choices, Sabine kept putting herself in situations that would have taken that choice away from her entirely if they’d been caught.

That being said, by the end, I also found myself losing patience with her. Grant makes it clear (multiple times), that his feelings are genuine, and yet she shuts him down at every turn, insisting she won’t “step willingly into another cage no matter how gilded” and that “tomorrows can turn into prisons.” And while I understand what the author was trying to convey, without actually seeing the experiences that shaped that mindset, it came across as more frustrating than sympathetic.

Taking all of those things into consideration, I didn’t dislike this enough to write the author off completely. There’s definitely potential there, and I’d be open to giving them another try down the line, whether that’s with this series or something new however, remains to be seen.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

I enjoyed this new installment of the companion series. The well-written plot is emotional, featuring "strangers-to-lovers," "instant lust," and "reformed rake" tropes, along with mild steamy scenes. At first glance, it seems like a heartfelt “opposites attract” romance, but little by little you realize that the protagonists are very similar and that both are still shaped by painful experiences from their past, which they work through together. Sabine is a jaded widow who is finally free and wants to enjoy her life, and Grant is a charming rogue who led a rakish lifestyle out of protest. Both feel lonely. The chemistry between them is palpable from the start, and their witty banter was genuinely fun. Both protagonists undergo great character development, and Grant evolves into a caring, supportive “cinnamon roll” hero. There were also many other likable supporting characters, and I was delighted to encounter some characters from earlier books.
The book can be read as standalone but I recommend reading the series in order.

After her period of mourning ended, the widowed Sabine, Baroness Hallard, traveled to London to start a new life. Years earlier, after her brothers Christian and Alec had left her alone and unprotected with her cruel father, Sabine had married the first man who asked for her hand. Although he was not cruel, he was indifferent, and Sabine felt trapped and forced to live in isolation. Now she wants to enjoy her newfound freedom and finally fulfill the wishes and desires that were denied her, and
she wants to discover what will make her happy. She cannot forgive her brothers, Christian von Stein, the current Earl of Raveley, and Alec von Stein, and she does not want to see them again.
Shortly after her arrival, Sabine meets the very alluring Grant Blackwell, the Duke of Mowbray, who captivates society with his wit and charm. Sabine and the charming rake are immediately drawn to each other, and they soon grow closer. Grant offers Sabine the experiences and excitement—free of empty promises and platitudes—she has longed for. They begin a secret affair to avoid ruining Sabine’s reputation and causing a scandal. Grant soon wants more, but Sabine doesn’t want to risk another golden cage, so Grant has to convince her that they belong together, he will stand by her and that she has a choice…

Overall, a heartwarming romance with very likable characters, character development, heartfelt emotions, witty banter, and a touch of spice—one I’m happy to recommend.

Lady’s Seduction, the third installment in The Lady's Rogue Companion Stories by C.K. MacKenzie, continues the saga of the Conrad family with a delightful blend of heartfelt romance and self-discovery. Lady Sabine Cogan, a young widow, has left behind her fractured family and an unhappy marriage to pursue a life of freedom, adventure, and joy on her own terms. Determined to avoid the pain of love, she embraces her independence—until a twist of fate brings her face-to-face with the charming and incorrigible Duke of Mowbray, Grant Blackwell.

Sabine’s first day in the city takes an unexpected turn when she narrowly avoids a collision with the Duke’s rogue stallion. Their meeting sparks both intrigue and tension, as the Duke’s roguish charm and relentless pursuit begin to chip away at Sabine’s carefully guarded heart. Grant, known for his carefree escapades and avoidance of commitment, finds himself unexpectedly captivated by the bold and brilliant widow. What begins as a flirtatious series of stolen kisses soon evolves into a deeper connection neither of them anticipated.

As Sabine navigates her longing for independence against the pull of unexpected desire, her estranged family reappears, forcing her to confront the wounds of her past. Meanwhile, Grant discovers that what began as a playful seduction has turned into something far more profound: the desire to share a life with the woman who has changed him.

Lady’s Seduction is a tender, engaging story that blends the excitement of adventure with the warmth of a slow-building romance. Sabine’s journey toward self-discovery and Grant’s transformation from rake to devoted suitor make this a captivating read.

I understood Sabine's hesitation to give into Grant but his devotion was steady, calming, and so genuine that she finally was able to accept that they were meant to be together. With memorable characters—both human and equine—and a satisfying emotional payoff, this installment leaves readers charmed and eager for the next visit to MacKenzie’s world.

Thanks to Booksprout for a copy of this story and this is my freely given opinion.

This is book 3 f the series and all part of the broader Conrad world, but can be easily read as a stand alone story.

Lady Sabine is now widowed after a marriage to escape a horrible home life, and ready to live life based on her own desires. She carries a great deal of emotional baggage from living in an abusive household with an overbearing father, and being abandoned by her two brothers to the less than tender mercies of their father. To save herself, she married to escape, but that marriage became a different type of prison as well.

Now that she has her freedom, she is exploring her choices, while staying with her friend. But she is dogged by her past, as her estranged brothers and their spouses are in the periphery and Sabine is not sure how she wants to deal with that (the brother's stories were told in previous stories).

In the meantime, on her first day in the city, on a ride with her friend, she is nearly mowed down by a rogue stallion, owned by the Duke of Mowbray. Grant Blackwell, intrigued by the beautiful lady new to Town, inserts himself into her life, determined to find out more about her and perhaps seduce her. Soon after, he finds his desire grows into stronger feelings and seduction only one facet of the relationship he wants with Sabine. However, does Sabine want more, having escaped from an unhappy home, and then an unhappy marriage?

A generally pleasant second chance/reformed rake romance, with likeable characters, including two horses that are characters unto themselves. There is a familial back story and drama that is interesting, and touched on, but this story can be read alone. However, I do feel that back story of familial tension is only touched on, but not fully addressed or resolved.

Such a lovely story! When they were younger, Sabine and her two brothers, Christian and Alec, were very close. Their presence ran interference between Sabine and their horrid father. Then each of her brothers left to strike out on their own, leaving her unprotected. In order to get away from her father, Sabine married Lord Hallard, the first man to ask for her hand, and lived a rather isolated and unhappy life. Once he died, she swore that she would never remarry and be trapped in a powerless situation like that again. After completing her mourning period, Sabine moved to London for an extended visit with her long time friend Julia, Vicountess Darrell. She met Grant Blackwell, the Duke of Mowbray, when his horse caused Sabine’s to rear, throwing her to the ground. Apparently the Duke had literally just rescued the horse from an abusive owner and had little familiarity with handling this particular horse’s temperament. Grant arrived with flowers in hand to check on Sabine and immediately became captivated by her. After running into each other a few more times (often by design), they both succumbed to their physical attraction and began an affair. The two of them saw through each other’s masks, creating a bond that the Duke cherished and Sabine feared. Added to that was an equine romance, and the discomfort of seeing her two brothers again. This is a steamy tale filled with ah-ha moments and emotional challenges and support. Characters from previous books play roles in this one, lending continuity to the ongoing saga. Although the previous books in this Companion Series contain danger and intrigue, this one is strictly a love story where a rogue meets his match and has to work for his lady’s affection.

A widow ready to start living, a carefree duke and a runaway horse (his) accident meet-cute. Neither is looking for love, but a little adventure wouldn’t go amiss...

New to Town, formerly prim and proper Sabine is determined to make her own happiness, rebel a little, discover pleasure – and avoid her brothers at all cost.
Orphaned young and raised with cool discipline, Grant has no concept of home. He filled the void by becoming a charming rogue, avoiding real connections – or so he believes.

Horse naming banter and shameless flirtation spark an irresistible attraction, but, what was supposed to be a meaningless sizzling affair, soon turns into more...
She discovers the big-hearted, lonely, vulnerable man underneath his suave rakish facade – but is he worth risking her new-found freedom, and her heart?
He’s fascinated by the feisty but frightened filly hiding behind witty and bold repartee – but how to convince a woman who’s lost all trust in men that he’s not going anywhere?

Despite all that old hurt, this was a lovely, playful, warm and heartfelt novella.
Sabine and Grant’s chemistry was brilliant; the instalust worked like a charm, and the friendship that grew was both touching and absolutely beautiful.
I adored Grant’s original bouquets and thoughtfulness; he’s a rock in rake’s clothing. To see that man discover just how full his supposedly empty life was, was simply heartwarming.
Does Sabine cling a little too much to the pent-up anger over her brothers’ abandonment? Yes... maybe? She’s very single-minded, but to fully understand that situation I recommend reading their stories The Lady's Rogue and Lady's Match. I did, however, really enjoy their reconciliation.
Still, while I got to know S&G fairly well, I missed a little depth. I also would have liked a bit more sibling interaction and the full story on her maid’s sideline romance. The latter could easily be a novella all on its own, and I would gobble it up! Hint, hint 😉
So, for me, this story only missed a few extra chapters to make it perfect.

Widowed Lady Sabine Cogan has already lived through a marriage defined more by duty than happiness. After years spent caring for her sick husband, she finally finds herself financially secure and determined to discover what truly brings her joy. She is not interested in love but more concerned with leading an independent life. Grant Blackwell, the Duke of Mowbray, is her complete opposite. He is charming and entirely unconcerned with consequences, living a life of indulgence. When an accident throws him into Sabine’s life, what begins with playful flirtation quickly turns into something more compelling.
The premise was fun and I enjoyed the push-and-pull between Sabine’s desire for control over her own life and Grant’s carefree nature. Their chemistry is evident, with plenty of banter, and the progression from light-hearted attraction to something deeper followed a familiar path. However, the story felt a bit surface-level at times. While Sabine’s journey toward independence was a strong starting point, I felt that this could have been further explored. An enjoyable read with likeable characters.

This is the last book in this series. It's best to read the books in order so you know the family history. The first two books are the brothers history. Christian and Godfred with Some talk about the sister they lost touch with. Lady Sabine Cogan is a Widow after marrying a man just to escape her family. After ten years of nursing him she is more then ready to have an adventure, some fun and enjoy life on her own terms. She has spent enough time in the country. Invited to spend time in London by her friend Julia she jumped at the offer. Sabine loves to ride an looks forward to the ride with her horse Godiva and Julia in hyde Park. Till her horse is spooked and she lands on the ground. Grant Blackwell Duke of M owbray is a rouge doing what ever he wants be it with woman, gambling or drink. Grant is shocked by the events with his horse, he just saved the animal from being beaten. He does know who Sabine is but Julia is the wife of one of his friends. Helping Sabine and making sure she is ok begins an adventure neither could have imagined. What a story, funny, spicy, danger And lots of adventures await them. Be sure to grab a copy an get started. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank. This is my honest opinion an am freely giving it.

Very well written, full of drama, love, family, friends, society, emotions, feelings, steam and adventure. Sabine has come to London with her maid, Maria, to stay at the home of Julia, her friend. She has been in mourning for her husband's passing , which she really wasn't sad about. She also has her 2 brothers living in London with their wives but doesn't want to talk to them. She has lots of negative feelings about them and how she thinks they abandoned her. Bad history there but will come to a head soon. Grant Blackwell , the Duke of Mowbray, meets Sabine when she is riding in the park. He just bought a new stallion who takes a liking to her mare. Accidents happen but it gets them to where they both want to be. Grant has lots of emotions and feelings for Sabine , noting that he realizes that lots of things have happened in her life. Between the two of them they are able to talk and find a common ground to expand on. Has lots of action and a fantastic storyline. A very special storytelling with this author. Able to keep you reading and turning the pages but leaves you wanting more. Would strongly recommend to everyone.

I feel that this story has a lot of potential, with some enjoyable banter and genuinely amusing elements (bouquet for the horse, anyone?) and that my enjoyment of it might have been affected by not having read the earlier books. If I had, or more background detail had been given, I might not have found some of the dynamics and characterisation a bit superficial and I might have felt more sympathetic toward Sabine, whom I didn't really warm to. I wasn't convinced that she had real grounds for her bitterness towards her brothers. Grant was far more likeable and engaging and his background understandable.

I was also frustrated by the references to Greenfield, which didn't really mean anything to me and I wondered why the marriage of Maria and Hayes was just dropped in without any development. Presumably the author was tying up loose ends, but I don't think this book can truly be considered stand alone.

So, I've only given 3 stars, but I wouldn't give up on this author and someone who had read the previous books might have a very different response to mine.

This was an interesting read for me. It was a short novella but really hard to read.
It took much longer to read that most books. I didn’t like the heroine. Her character was too angry. She wanted a new start with the breeding yo make her own choices but she held on to so much hurt. I don’t remember the stories of her brothers as it has been a while since I read them, but I felt a total disregard for their past hurts. I did really like the hero in this book. The Duke was a really likable character and seemed genuine from the beginning. I never really got fake/rogue vibes from him. His humor, charm, and witty banter, as well as his vulnerability made this story pleasing for me. I have really enjoyed most of these books, but the energy just seemed so negative at times. I was happy with the HEA after the change in her attitude, but it took much longer than I would have liked.

A second chance at… life
Sabine, abandoned by her two brothers to her father’s tyranny, married the first man, who offered for her. Her husband was cold, uncaring, dominating. Now a widow, she has sworn never to remarry and to lead her life on her terms. That is counting without Grant, the Duke of Mowbray, a notorious rake. He starts pursuing her after his horse causes an incident unseating her on her very first outing with her mare Godiva in London. Will his campaign of flowers for the lady and turnips, apples and oats for Godiva be successful or will Sabine’s insecurities keep him at bay? And will her resentment towards her brothers keep her from a lang awaited reconciliation?
I loved this third book in the Lady’s Rogue Companion Stories with the reappearance of Christian and Alec. It inspired me to return and binge on the Conrad Legacy and associated books.

Whew what a ride! What’s not to live about these two.
We have Sabine, Baroness of Hallard is still young enough after being a widow in a very dreary marriage. She is beautiful, intelligent and was very much unappreciated. She is the guest of her very good friend Julia, the Viscountess Darrell. They are out riding when her horse Godiva throws her and she encounters Grant Blackwell, the Duke of Mowbray.
These two people are in for the ride of their life! They actually see each other. Not outwardly but inwardly which is the most dangerous and vulnerable place to be seen! Sabine wants to run because life has taught her not to believe in goodness and consistency in a man! But Grant says if she runs he will chase her!
Love this story! Bravo well done! A man that literally fights for her!.

Tropes: rake/widow; he falls first
Steam level: 3
Part of a series; works OK on its own plotwise, but maybe the main characters were given more depth in previous books?

3.25 stars. This is a romantic, quick read with low angst and the typical HR plot devices. The banter between the MC's is a highlight, and there are some genuinely sweet scenes, but everything is fairly surface level. Grant is your typical "cinnamon roll in rake's clothing" and Sabine is your typical woman scorned who's afraid to try again. There's a subplot involving Sabine's brothers that's concluded quickly and painlessly at the end.

Overall: it's OK, but not super memorable.

I read an advanced reader copy of this book and this is my honest, voluntary review. Thanks to the author and BookSirens.

Widowed Lady Sabine Cogan had a difficult marriage to a sickly husband who needed constant nursing. happiness wasn’t for her, and neither was love. When he died she promised herself a life of freedom and the thrill of adventure. Then she met him through an accident.

Grant Blackwell, Duke of Mowbray, enjoyed his life. He did as he pleased. He would seduce his way around. But then a horse-riding accident put him in the path of a beautiful widow. And how the mighty fall. Falling in love, an affair… but these two could not avoid their passionate reality and so begins their journey to a HEA. A lovely story of two would be lovers that can’t just be in it for the short term pleasure but the long forever love haul.

Rake/Widow, Passion to Love
Delightful romance, quick read. The banter and push/pull of the MCs is fun and grows lightly steamy. Both have sadness and anger in their youths that needed to be addressed before they could release their feelings toward each other. The Duke, after his parents’ death, became a rake by breaking all rules his strict grandfather lived by. Sabine was abandoned by her brothers to live with a cold father. She accepted the first marriage proposal seeking shelter and was relegated to the background, a lonely and secluded wife.

Charming simple Georgian romance set in London. Sabine comes to London to stay with a friend after the end of her mourning period for her much older husband who she married to escape from the oppressive household ruled by her father.

On her first excursion she has an accident as a result of an encounter with a runaway horse belonging to Grant. He of course is a wildly attractive Duke with his own emotional issues. Attraction blooms and becomes established.

It is all nicely handled with a light touch and no need for great drama or a 3rd act breakdown that needs to be resolved.

I hurt for Sabine. Having to make hard choices and no matter which way she chose, it was painful. I fully understand her fear of the future and the need to be free. I adored Grant and his protectiveness of Sabine. It hurt watching him want what she just could not give. I adored Thornton- he was a gem. Good story, short and easy to read, with no crass language (thank you Author), well written love scenes and a wonderful epilogue! Adored it!.

Received this ARC from the author.
I enjoyed this story of two broken, hurting people who have not been shown the love they needed from those who should have provided it without question.

They were both committed to a life alone without attachment until circumstances brought them together unexpectedly.

It was lovely to see the trust built and barriers broken as they developed a relationship.

A sweet love story. I loved Grant's character and the growth and changes he completes as his relationship develops with Sabine. A lot of pain is alluded to in Sabine's past. This was a shorter read, and I would have enjoyed a longer story that delved in to both of their pasts more to show the depth of what it took for them to fall in love.

I enjoyed the banter. The MMC, even if he had been a rake, he seemed very genuine with his feelings of wanting a real relationship. I didn’t like the FMC as much she seemed to carry her hurt from her father and late husband forward into all her relationships. It was a quick read.
