Tokyo: Part One

Rate this book
In a city where neon lights hide brutal truths, obsession becomes inevitable, loyalty becomes a weapon, and love becomes the most dangerous choice of all. Because in this world…betrayal always collects its debt.

EVELYN CARTER

I came to Tokyo to disappear. New York had already decided who I was supposed to be, every choice mapped out before I could make it. Here, I wanted something that belonged to me. My camera. My escape. My life.

Then I met him.

Erin Yamamoto isn’t the kind of man you meet and forget. He moves like silence wrapped around violence, like something inevitable. A man who doesn’t just enter your life… he takes it, reshapes it, leaves his mark whether you survive him or not. I should have walked away the moment I realized what he was. But Tokyo doesn’t let you go once it claims you. And neither does he.

ERIN YAMAMOTO

She was never supposed to matter. Evelyn Carter is chaos in a world that demands control, a risk I cannot afford. In my world, attachment is weakness, and weakness is punished without mercy. I was raised to inherit power built on blood, loyalty, and obedience. There is no space for desire. No space for her.

And yet, I kept her.

Now she stands at the center of something unforgiving. A war she doesn’t understand, with enemies that don’t forgive mistakes. Every decision I make pulls her deeper into a world that will devour her whole. If I keep her, I destroy her. If I let her go… I lose the only thing that has ever felt like mine.

Wow! I was not expecting this type of story, but wow was it good. Told through multiple POVs and, at times, in journal-style entries, this RH isn’t your typical romance, dark romance, or even mafia/yakuza story. Instead, it comes together like puzzle pieces, which made it highly entertaining.

It took me a little while to get into the story and the prose because it was so different from what I expected, but once I pushed past that initial adjustment, it became a quick and engaging read. It’s dark at times, but the third-person POV helps frame the story well and keeps everything grounded.

“This is not a typical mafia romance. If you’re arriving with expectations, leave them at the door. Buckle up. Tokyo will test you.”

This definitely incorporates an element I personally have never come across (that I recall) in any other yakuza/mafia books I’ve read.

I don't typically (basically never) like to read something unfinished, because if it ends on a cliffhanger, I rage-wait for the conclusion. But I read the description and knew immediately this bad boy right here was right up my alley. I had no other choice.

I read an ARC for Haunting Celeste back in December. That was my introduction to this author, and I really enjoyed it, so when I received an email from BookSirens for Tokyo, it caught my attention.

A Yes, this book does end on a cliffhanger, but I already figured I was setting myself up for that.

Overall, I enjoyed it. It was fast-paced, thrilling, and dark. I’m curious what kind of chaos we’re gonna get later.

I’ll see you in part two!

Thanks to BookSirens and Llianne Olivo for this ARC. Opinions are my own.

This fast paced ARC read is not like your usual Mafia read, and you can quote me on that.

I think the word 'intrigued' would be an understatement of how I felt while reading Tokyo by Llianne Olivio.

The city felt alive and dangerously intoxicating like Tokyo was it's own character in the story.

The FMC Evelyn is smart, fearless, and chaotic in the best way. She takes charge, makes bold moves, and I loved how she held her own.

The MMC Erin gives off unrelenting alpha, who is jaw-droppingly magnetic. He’s dominant, intense, but also has these rare, quiet moments of tenderness that make him impossible not to LOVE him.

Sneaky little quote: "Who controls the story doesn’t always control the truth."

If you enjoy chaotic, unhinged crimes with a dark romance, stories that break generational cycles, and reads that grip you with an emotional charge, then Tokyo is the book for you.

Sidenote: I cannot wait for Part Two. 🤌🏼
Another sidenote: Loved seeing a fellow South African artist song pop up in the book. ♡ TYLA - Chanel 🇿🇦

“You don’t have to be made of iron. You’re allowed to be human. To break and bleed.”

“Only if you’re the one stitching me back together.”

This book was fast-paced and chaotic…I loved it! The plot was enticing and I loved the characters! Sakura was easily my favorite character! Erin and Evelyn had instant chemistry and their romance was straight forward! Thank god for no third act breakup!

The writing was passionate! I loved the letter Tamaki left behind to Sakura and Erin! Poor girl! You could tell how much she loved her children despite the awful circumstances she endured!

Lmfao Evelyn…Girl didn’t even get a second to enjoy Japan before she was kidnapped😂

My only question is how did Evelyn understand the Japanese everyone was speaking in those intense moments or did everyone just happen to know English and they accommodated to her anytime she was around? Either way I’m not going to think too deeply because I really enjoyed this book! The ending was so satisfying! I cannot wait for the second one!

Thank you BookSirens and Llianne Olivo for the Arc!

ARC Review — From BookSirens
Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Book one of Tokyo by Llianne Olivio
Pub Date: Feb 14th, 2026
Genre: Mafia/Dark Romance
Format: Digital

Thanks to BookSirens for this arc. I really wanted to like it more than I did but I love settings and stuff happening in Japan so I was really excited to read this and this was interesting because it had to do with the Yakuza but not what I had hoped… even with the romance aspect of it. Lots of prose and the POV is third person which isn’t bad but first person would have been better. The story is told with letters and sometimes it was confusing going back and forth between POV’s. This is dark but not very much and I enjoyed it but I can’t really say much about this. There is action happening and it’s about the Yakuza and it’s really interesting as we follow a Latina girl from NY. Could have been better to me personally, I wanted more.

Writing style is dramatic, intense and borderline *too much* sometimes and yet it works. It literally warns you from the start, this is not a cute romance, this is obsession, control, power, and emotional damage wrapped in silk and blood. And honestly? I love this.

Tamaki's storyline absolutely wrecked me. That whole opening, her winning, chasing her father's approval, uncomfortable love and then BAM, betrayal. Her father really said “I love you” and then handed her over like a business transaction??? I was MAD. Like physically mad. But the letter? The LETTER?? That was cruel in a completely different way. It didn't excuse him but it made it hurt more. And I hate that I understood him even a little.

And Hiroyuki? I don’t even know what to say. That man is terrifying. Not in a cartoon villain way but controlled, “this is normal for me” way.

Then you've got Evelyn in New York, and the shift is wild but somehow it works. She feels real in a completely different way like anxiety, self-doubt, money stress, trying to prove your life isn't a waste at 18 (which is WAY too relatable). Her sections are quieter but heavy in a different way. It's like the book is juggling two completely different emotional storms at once.

Also can we talk about the vibe?? This book feels cinematic. Everything is described like it means something. The rooms, the food, the clothes, it's all loaded. Sometimes it's almost overwhelming, but I think that’s intentional. You’re supposed to feel suffocated a little. Like the characters are.

Is it perfect? No. It's intense to the point where some people might feel exhausted. The pacing is fast but emotionally heavy, which can feel like A LOT. But honestly… that's kind of the point. It doesn't let you sit comfortably.

Overall?
This book feels like:
* falling into something dangerous
* knowing it's toxic but not looking away
* being emotionally manipulated and willingly staying

And weirdly, I liked it for that.
It’s a “this made me feel things I didn’t sign up for” kind of read.

And yeah… I'm definitely reading Part Two because there's no way I'm being left on that kind of emotional cliffhanger.

Thank you booksirens for gifting me a copy of this book for an honest review.

My first maffia romance ever, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, I just wish it would have been a little longer... but I guess that's what book 2 is for.

Like a perfectly woven tapestry, the story runs on 2 different timelines, past and present, and the present is also split into locations New York/ Tokyo.
These threads weave together in Tokyo, where the FMC, Evelyn, gets pulled into the dangerous underworld of the yakuza, by mistake.
That's how she meets Erin, the MMC.
Both characters have a lot of inner battle and trauma to deal with and that brings them together to an explosive romance!

I loved the dynamic between the main characters, but my favourite one was Sakura, Erin’s twin sister.
She initially sounded like your typical bratty 18 yo,  but she was a smart, calculated young woman who was ready to run the world!

There is one beautifully written chapter where the twins read a letter from their mother, who passed while they were still young.
I had all the emotions and felt all the feels reading that chapter; and if you've ever lost someone prepare to have some tissues on the side....

The romance aspect is about🌶🌶 for me.
Hoping to see a bit more world building in the next installment and some more character development.

There are a lot of dark undertones such as grief, abandonment,  broken loyalty, etc...
Please check the author's website for trigger warnings.

Oh, and the epilogue: chef's kiss 👌👌👌

If you want to know what it is, I guess you'll need to read the book 🫶

Toxic Love & Bad Decisions

OMG besties… Thus book had me stressed, obsessed, and side-eyeing every character like my life depended on it. 👀 "Tokyo" drops you straight into a neon-lit nightmare where love feels like a liability and loyalty comes with a body count.

Evelyn thought she was escaping… yeah, no. The second she collides with Erin Yamamoto cold, calculated, and dangerously addictive... it’s game over. Their chemistry? Toxic in the most addictive way. The kind that makes you whisper “this is a bad idea” while turning the page faster. Between arranged alliances, power plays, and secrets that refuse to stay buried, the tension stays at a constant simmer. 😳

Now listen… it’s written in 3rd-person with multiple POVs (you already know I had my moment about that), buuuuut the STORY? It still pulled me in. I was locked in for the chaos, the danger, and those “oh… this is about to go left” moments.

And that ending?? Yea, it's a duet, so yea I knew of the cliffy... but still! I need Book 2... ASAP!

If you love dark mafia romance with obsession, danger, and high-stakes emotions… add this to your TBR. Seriously 😉

Hot damnnn. Lliane Olivo does it again. She just wrecked me again

Tokyo: Part One is not your typical mafia romance. It opens with glory and ends in betrayal, and the emotional whiplash is intentional.
Tamaki’s fall from Olympic golden girl to arranged bride of a ruthless yakuza leader is brutal and beautifully written. The tension is controlled, almost ceremonial, which makes it even more disturbing. The father’s letter alone is worth the read. It adds layers of complexity instead of giving us a one-dimensional villain.

The story feels dense and atmospheric, with sharp emotional edges and a strong sense of inevitability. It’s dark, obsessive, and unapologetic about it. The dual timeline adds intrigue, even if you’re still waiting to see how everything collides.

If you like morally gray turning pitch black, quiet menace instead of loud chaos, and high-stakes emotional betrayal, this one delivers.
Not what I expected from a normal Mafia Dark Romance book. This is a must read....

Cliffhanger warning. And it hurts.

If dark mafia romance with morally gray characters is your jam, Tokyo by Llianne Olivo is absolutely ready to ruin your emotional stability in the best way possible.

Set against the vibrant and dangerous backdrop of Tokyo, this story dives deep into power, loyalty, and the messy complexity of human relationships. Olivo doesn’t just give us a setting Tokyo itself feels alive, pulsing through every scene with intensity and atmosphere.

Tamaki is the kind of character you can’t help but root for. She’s layered with vulnerability, resilience, and just enough emotional chaos to keep things interesting. Watching her navigate this brutal world was equal parts heartbreaking and empowering.

Nobody here is purely good or purely evil, and honestly? That’s where the magic happens. The characters live in that deliciously messy gray area where loyalty and betrayal are always just one choice apart.

Olivo’s prose is rich and evocative. The writing style pulls you into the story and refuses to let go.

This was a difficult book for me to finish. And I was trying to pinpoint why I struggled with it so much when I usually manage a book a day or two max and I enjoyed the story.

I think the main issue for me was the pace & writing style - it felt quite heavy on the scene setting and took too long to get to the point. I could probably remove about 40% of the words and still have a pretty good story left. But this book had the writing and pacing of a multi-book romantasy, where using an entire chapter to describe a room is the norm.

And that’s the shame really. 😔 Because the story is really good - it’s different to anything I’ve read before, the characters are incredibly interesting and the plot twists were great (that’s why I’ve given it ⭐️⭐️⭐️) but it all gets a bit lost in the excruciatingly slow pace.

Other readers may enjoy it but I like my mafia romance fast-paced, gritty and dark and Tokyo only manages 2 out of 3.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 rounded up

This was my first time reading this author, and honestly… it wasn’t what I expected. I didn’t love it, but I definitely didn’t hate it either.

It took me a few chapters to really get into the story. At first, it felt a bit random and chaotic in places, but by the time I settled into it, I was already hooked.

Evelyn and Erin’s connection develops quickly—they’re drawn to each other on a spiritual level as well as an emotional and romantic one. Erin fits the typical Yakuza mold: controlled, dominant, unemotional, always in charge… until he meets Evelyn. She gets under his skin in a way no one else has, making him actually feel. Evelyn, on the other hand, starts off shy, timid, almost invisible—but when she goes to Japan, she begins to step into the person she was always meant to be.

The side characters really added to the story—I especially loved Sakura and Erika.

I wasn’t sure about this book at the start, but now I’m definitely intrigued and looking forward to Book 2.

Thank you for the ARC—this is my honest review.

ARC REVIEW⭐⭐⭐ (3.5/5)

I recently picked up this book as my first read from this author, and honestly, it was a bit of a mixed experience. I didn’t absolutely love it, but I didn’t hate it either.

Initially, it took a few chapters for me to really get into the story. The beginning felt somewhat random and chaotic, which made it tough to engage with. However, once I settled in, I found myself hooked. While the story had its interesting moments, I felt it fell short in some areas—especially for a dark romance. I was hoping for a deeper relationship development.

The plot was fast-paced and entertaining, and I appreciated the multiple points of view, although there were times it felt a bit confusing. Overall, I enjoyed the storyline enough to keep going, and I'm glad I persevered because by the end, I was intrigued enough to want to read the sequel. Plus, I have to mention that the cover is absolutely beautiful!

Y’all let me tell you, like the author says at the beginning of this book, this was definitely not a typical mafia romance. I’m no stranger to mafia romance but this was my first Yakuza romance and it did not disappoint. I’ll be honest I was mostly intrigued because of the Dominican FMC. As a Latina myself I was so excited to read about this representation. I loved how seamlessly Llianne incorporated Evelyn’s Dominican background in the overall story. While this book was a wild and sometimes confusing ride it had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I can’t wait for part 2. Read this if you’re a lover of mafia romance with a touch of magical realism, bad ass FMCs, and a swoon worthy tall MMC giving major touch her and die vibes.

Emotional, immersive, and character-driven.

This felt more like stepping into someone’s life than just reading a story.

Tokyo: Part One has that slow, immersive vibe where you’re not rushing through plot points—you’re just kind of there, watching everything unfold. The setting adds a lot to the story too. There’s something about the city that makes everything feel a bit more intense and personal.

The characters felt real, especially in the way they deal with emotions and relationships. Nothing felt overly dramatic, but it still carried weight.

It does take its time, so if you prefer fast-paced stories, this might feel slow in parts. But if you like character-driven reads where the focus is more on feelings and experiences, it works really well.

Overall, it feels like the beginning of something bigger, and I’m curious to see where the next part goes.

What I loved about this story was its originality, I could never guess where the story was going and it kept me in the edge of my seat. I loved the romance between the main characters and that it was immediate. The author does an amazing job with their descriptions and you can visualize everything they are telling you. Overall, the story as a whole, along with the characters, was enjoyable. I liked how the story went back and forth between Erin and Evelyn until they were in the same spot and the stories came together. The only thing I did not enjoy was things could change in the blink of an eye. Sometimes it was abrupt and the explanations seemed a little rushed or brushed off. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It ended on a cliff hanger and I am very intrigued to see what happens in Part 2.

Tokyo: Part One was such a good read. It had a dark, cinematic atmosphere with lots of tension, danger, loyalty, and emotional depth without relying heavily on spice to carry the story. The chemistry between the characters was strong, but the romance focused more on connection and story development. The author did include a couple spicy bonus scenes near the end for readers who enjoy a little extra heat.

The pacing kept me hooked, and the characters felt layered and realistically flawed instead of overly perfect. It gave major mafia/yakuza drama vibes with plenty of suspense and emotional drama .

Trigger Warnings: violence, organized crime/yakuza themes, emotional trauma, manipulation, grief, morally gray characters, and mild explicit content.

Definitely recommend for readers who enjoy darker romance with plot, tension, and atmosphere over nonstop spice. 📚✨

This book is not my usual read but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Evelyn travels to Tokyo to find herself after a tough start to life and disappointment back in Brooklyn. She finds herself embroiled in a twisted holiday romance that happened FAST and covered the full spectrum of emotions over just a few days, from joy and love to fear and sadness.

It was fast paced and was an easy read and I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

Erin's character progression throughout the book was fantastic and had me rooting for him throughout. I also really struggle with 3rd person POVs but that's a personal preference. However, I am impressed!

Thanks to Book Sirens for allowing me to read this ARC. I'm truly grateful!

This story started off pretty slow for me, but once it picked up? BAM! Things started moving fast and the story really came together. The romance also moves quickly, with the characters falling for each other after only about a week, but the author does warn readers that this isn’t your typical mafia romance.

The characters, especially Evelyn, Erin, and Sakura, felt older than 18 at times, which threw me off a little. Still, I really loved Sakura and Erika’s characters!

It took me a while to fully get into this one, but I’m glad I kept pushing through because by the end, I was definitely intrigued enough to want to read part 2. The cover is beautiful!

Tokyo: Part One is an enticing first entry in a story that takes it’s FMC
Evelyn Carter from New York into an unplanned journey through the depths and darkness of the Japanese Yakuza.
She came to Tokyo to find a new life, to disappear from the one she was drowning in, but instead finds MMC Erin Yamamoto and a past that has returned and will haunt them and their forbidden love both.
This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed the writing, well crafted characters, drama, family dynamics, intrigue, violence, legacy, secrets, personal vulnerabilities, emotion, and passion.
A very immersive read that has me looking forward to the next part of their story. TBC

Okay! I seriously had no clue the story would progress so quickly. I was running with the Main Character and Love Interest. Just so you know, you will love it. Sometimes stories just captivate the audience. This is the first book I’ve read by Olivo. I will be looking for more. Evelyn has been looking for life. Erin was a shadow in real life. Cute. The story is rough, observation, and intrigue. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I know part two will be just as good. This book was a good read, with an interesting story, however it just missed the mark for me. Yes it is slightly dark, but for a dark romance I was looking for a bit more spice, and relationship development.

The plot was fast paced and entertaining, told via multiple POV’s. There were a few occasions I found this a bit confusing, but overall I enjoyed the storyline and will read book 2 to see where this goes.

I absolutely loved this book! The writing is so vivid that it felt like a movie playing in my mind. Between the incredible detail and the way the plot unfolded, it was a fast-paced, addictive read. Plus, it hits that 'touch her and you will die' trope that I find endlessly swoon-worthy. The letters included in the narrative were breathtaking…they were so beautifully written yet utterly devastating. They added such a profound layer of intimacy to the character's development.

I chose this because I enjoyed a previous book by this author, and this didn't disappoint either. It felt like the kind of book that I needed to follow closely otherwise I might miss something, and so it had my full attention. The MMC, Erin, had a dangerous kind of energy that made me feel drawn to him. The FMC was Evelyn, and I felt like I could identify with her in some way that I couldn't quite put my finger on.

This left me wanting a little bit more, so I'll be reading part two.

There are so many wonderfully wicked things going on in this book that made it deliciously dark and intriguing to read. The characters were intricate and deep. The storyline brought various thoughts to the forefront. Things most of us know, deep down, happen in the background, but also don’t focus on too hard because we think we’re above it. When in reality, we’re just not strong enough to survive in such a world. So, we’re happy to be oblivious. Highly recommend this book!!

Found the story engaging but left wanting for further description and details to the story. Went from 0 to 60 with a lot left in the story that wasn't for told. Went from interested to in love within a very very brief time. Excellent story but could have been so much better with increased strength in detail.
