Roman A last-minute call to the Olympics? Can’t say no to that. It’s supposed to be fun, just part of the job. Then I meet Nico. He’s grace where I’m force. Quiet where I’m loud. And from the second he smiles at me, I’m done for. When I’m with him, the world narrows to only ice and heat and the way he fits against me—like he belongs. Our short time together is never going to be enough.
Nico The Olympics are my dream—and I finally have my chance at the gold. I didn’t expect a grumpy American defenseman to become my favorite part of it, though. Roman looks at me like I’m something rare. Something worth keeping. Sure, I’m breaking records, but this feels bigger. We don’t talk about what happens after the closing ceremony… We don’t need to. Because this was always supposed to be temporary.
Fate on Skates by Penny Fox is a MM hockey romance that is my very first book of hers. This is just a sweet, swoony, completely angst free romance that made my heart all squeezy. It had my very favorite kind of first meeting, when their eyes meet from a long distance away and they just can’t look away. I live for this stuff!
Roman Callahan is twenty nine years old and is a professional hockey player for the Denver Diamonds. Even though he has an almost permanent scowly face, he’s not really grumpy. He’s quiet, reserved, a private person. He lives alone with his adorable Corgi named Taco. Roman wasn’t originally on this year’s Olympics team, but when one of the players was injured in a game, Roman was called to replace him. It’s his dream, to play on the Olympics team. But Roman would soon learn that something else would be even more important than winning a gold medal.
Nico Laurent is twenty one years old and is a world class figure skater from Montreal, Canada. He is the favorite to win the gold at the Olympics. Nico is pure sunshine, always smiling, confident and outgoing. As soon as his eyes landed on Roman Callahan, it didn’t matter that he didn’t know a thing about hockey, he just needed to know him.
As soon as these two meet face to face, it’s like the Fourth of July. Their first few times together are full of shy smiles and flirting. I swooned so much. And when that first kiss happened, I melted. They were so adorable together. They both know, though, that this is just a short thing. That their time together will end when the Olympic torch stops burning. They live thousands of miles apart and both lead very busy lives. There is no way they could find a way to be together. Or is there?!
This was just one of those books that makes your heart feel happy. I admit that I was worried about how they would figure things out but I had confidence that they would. They needed to be together. The epilogue was perfect. I see that in a few months, there will be another book on Roman’s teammate and Nico’s cousin. It’s in my schedule and I can’t wait.
Fate on Skates – Penny Fox ⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.5, rounded up because I had fun)
This was a sweet, cute, low-angst and quick read.
Looking at the cover and blurb, I knew exactly what I was getting into, and it delivered exactly that. No surprises, no major drama, just a fun romance that was easy to fly through in one sitting.
Nico and Roman were adorable together. The chemistry was instant, the attraction was immediate, and they fell hard and fast. Normally I need a little more time to believe such big feelings, but there was something so charming about them that I just went with it. Before they knew it, they were making life-changing decisions and willing to completely rearrange their futures for each other.
The size difference was doing its thing, the skating element was fun, and Roman being this big softie underneath his tough hockey-player exterior was probably my favourite part.
Is it deep and life-changing? No.
Is it realistic that two people can meet and immediately start planning an international future together? Also no.
Did I have a good time reading it anyway? Absolutely.
Sometimes you don't want emotional devastation, plot twists, or twenty chapters of miscommunication. Sometimes you just want two cute idiots falling in love at record speed, and Fate on Skates delivered exactly that.
I received a copy of this book from GRR, and this is my honest review.
Fate on Skates is the definition of “I sat down and suddenly it was 3 hours later”
This is for anyone who watched the Winter Olympics and had thoughts 👀
We’ve got: ⛸️ Nico & Roman bringing the instant chemistry 🏒 Big hockey player, even bigger softie (the corgi video calls?? I’m gone 🐶) 📏 Size difference that absolutely understood the assignment 💃 A Dirty Dancing lift… on ice… yes really 🌍 “I would move countries for you” level intensity
Is it deep? No. Is it a little chaotic? Yes. Did I eat it up in one sitting? Also yes.
This is your perfect palate cleanser: flirty, fast and just enough spice to keep things interesting.
Sometimes you don’t need emotional damage and you just need vibes… and a hot hockey player who’d cross borders ❤️
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review
“Can I walk you back to your building?” he asks, hope shining in his eyes.
Super cute wee palate cleanser. Swoony and sweet and basically zero angst. A hockey player and a figure skater meet at the Olympics and fall in love~~~
I loved getting to see snippets of both guys’ sports and the delicious anticipation of their first kiss was perfect. Of course after the ice broke so to speak their chemistry was on fire. I absolutely predicted how it would end but with a book as sweet and charming as this that’s not a bad thing. It’s nice to have some happy fluff every now and then.
[I would like to thank GRR for the advance copy they gave me]
OMG this was so so good and so sweet ???
I read it really fast because i always wanted to see them interact and see them navigate their relationship
This is such a must read if you're looking for a very cute and cozy read ! I will definitely be reading book 2 really soon and will definitely buy this one (the cover is so pretty i need it at home)
Come on, who doesn't love a hockey player + figure skater romance? Both Nico and Roman are so sweet (Nico the sweet and sassy variety, and Roman the sweet and grumpy type, of course.) Their chemistry is so... I don't know how to describe it other than soft, gentle, and easy (while still plenty hot, of course). I think what I love most about these two sweethearts is how much respect they develop and have for the other's sport so quickly. Nico knows NOTHING about hockey, and Roman doesn't know anything about figure skating, but they share a love of the ice and deep commitment to their craft, and they both quickly learn about the other's passion. It's like - he loves it, so I will learn about it so I can appreciate how awesome he is more.
The only thing that bugged me and threw me out of the story is that the pacing is a little bizarre at times. Like I could have sword it said Nico had 2 solo performances, but only one is on page, and it jumps from the day before Roman's final hockey game to the closing ceremony, so it's not even included except as a passing mention. There are some other jumps in there too, where it will be right after one of Roman's games and mention Nico's performance is tomorrow, and then suddenly it's just before Roman's game which is presumably a day or two later. The Winter Olympics is less than 3 weeks long from opening to closing ceremony, so it just felt weird to skip these athletes' entire reason for being there sometimes.
This was the first book I've read by Penny Fox, but I'll definitely be back for more!
A French Canadian that doesn’t speak much French? If your going to write a book about a French Canadian at least learn a bit about the place and culture to know that everyone from Quebec and Montreal speak French and you can have a conversation in French with some one from France.
Aside from that as a Canadian that just irked me. But this was sweet, low angst no third act break up. It was a very quick easy read. If you need something super light after a heavier read this is the book for you.
There’s something delightfully unpredictable about picking up a book by Penny Fox. You never quite know whether you’re about to be emotionally ambushed, thoroughly entertained, or left grinning like a fool at two in the morning. Fate on Skates manages to accomplish all three—preferably while you’re clutching a glass of water and fanning yourself with the nearest available paperback.
Set against the glittering chaos of the Olympic Games, the story pairs two athletes who could not possibly be more different if fate itself had tried harder. Roman, a hulking hockey defenseman, is the embodiment of the classic grump: stoic, intimidating, and built like a brick wall that occasionally growls. But beneath that icy exterior? Pure marshmallow—especially when it comes to the people he cares about.
Then there’s Nico, a figure skater so outrageously talented that his ego has every right to strut around like it owns the rink. Thankfully, it does so with such charm and theatrical flair that you can’t help but adore him. He’s dazzling, dramatic, and fully aware of his own brilliance—which, honestly, only makes him more entertaining.
Watching these two collide—one all brute strength and quiet devotion, the other a sparkling whirlwind of talent and confidence—is half the fun. The other half is the chemistry. It’s the kind that sneaks up on you: one moment you’re laughing at their banter, the next you’re reaching for that aforementioned glass of water because, well… things have heated up considerably on the ice.
Fox also populates the story with a cast of secondary characters who add warmth, humor, and the occasional dose of chaos. More importantly, the novel doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the very real stigma that still shadows LGBTQ+ athletes in professional sports. It’s woven into the narrative with care, never overshadowing the romance but reminding us that the world still has work to do.
Because at the heart of it all lies a simple truth: people are just people. Talent, love, identity—none of it fits neatly into boxes, nor should it.
Fate on Skates is witty, heartfelt, and irresistibly charming—a romance that glides between humor, heat, and genuine emotion with the confidence of a gold-medal performance. And if it leaves you daydreaming about attending the next Winter Olympics… well, you won’t be the only one.
"Fate on Skates" is a very charming m/m romance between a Canadian Olympic figure skater, Nico Laurent, and an American Olympic hockey player, Roman Callahan. This cozy, low-angst story is a variant on the summer/vacation/resort romance trope, where the main characters meet and fall in love while traveling away from home, but here the Winter Olympics in Vancouver serve as the setting where Nico and Roman's eyes meet and love blossoms. Since they participate in two different sports, albeit both on ice skates, there is no rivalry (heated or otherwise) between them, and the only obstacle to their HEA is the distance between their homes and careers after the Olympics end.
Author Penny Fox handles the falling in love plotline skillfully; this is an alternating first-person POV narrative. I liked Nico and Roman's descriptions of their own sports as well as their perspectives on each other's. With the exception of Roman's teammate Connor and Nico's cousin Étienne, both present in part so that the main characters have someone besides one another to talk about their feelings with, Fox largely dispenses with other secondary characters, though Roman's and Nico's loving, enthusiastic parents, who will clearly present no impediment to the amorous athletes' future happiness, do put in appearances. The spice is sexy and the prose in those scenes is realistic, not overwritten (though the sexual dynamics between our 150 lb. figure skater and 6'4", 225 lb. hockey player are perhaps a bit predictable). The one major plot twist will perhaps come as less of a surprise to readers than it does to Nico and Roman, which may well have been the author's intention.
I enjoyed this one. I'd read more m/m romances by this author.
With thanks to the author/publisher for access to a digital ARC on Booksprout. All opinions are very definitely my own.
Winter Olympics. Hockey. Figure Skating. Two very different men one brilliantly conceived romance. Penny Fox has the skill many writers yearn for, she can surprise her reader with each new book. This one was great surprise. Shorter than her usual, captivating, funny, cute and incredibly romantic with an HEA that even had me laughing!
Roman is the hockey player, a gentle man who prefers to be out of the spotlight, playing, supporting his team and doing well. Nico is the figure skater, highly skilled, adoring the spotlight and thriving with being in the Olympics. There are also Connor and Etienne, the side characters who have connections to Roman and Nico, who help them come together, who find their own romance and who add to the comedy value this book delivers in spades.
If you love ice based sports, the Olympics, opposites attract, MM, humorous stories then you will love this one. Be warned you won't want to stop reading once you've started so make sure to start at a time when you can just fall into the story!
The one thing that really keep me on my toes, though not as elegantly as Nico could have done it, was how would these two, these complete opposites who, on the face of it, have only the few weeks of the games together, say goodbye. Would they say goodbye, was it destined to only be an in the moment chance or can they find a way to make it work and show us all how well opposites do attract and work together? Penny Fox delivers another outstanding romance, one not to be missed.
Firstly, let me say I got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review This is a lovely book about two men finding each other. They meet at the Olympics when all they can think about is getting gold. Roman is a late call up for the American hockey team. He has always been standoffish with people because he enjoys hockey, he enjoys his team. He’s got a great mum and dad they believed in him and he’s got a beautiful corgi taco. But when Roman hears music coming out of a rink, he is drawn to it and goes in and this is where he puts his eyes on the Canadian figure skater Nico. Nico has always dreamed of going to the Olympics he knows he’s good and he has his sites on gold but when he is practising at the rink he feels somebody watching him. There’s people in the crowds but it’s the one guy whose eyes he feels on him and he goes over to introduce himself. For me this Book is Love at first sight the chemistry between them is off the charts. They are passionate and can’t keep their hands off one another, but this is the Olympics they have to keep up with training and concentrating on their competition, but what happens when the Olympics is over? This is just a good hearted beautiful Red about two guys finding each other. It is easily Love at first sight. i’ve got to say I thoroughly enjoyed this. Read it was nice that there was stress it was just about their connection. I look forward to reading the next book.
This was such a sweet, low-angst read that I flew through in one sitting.
Roman, an Olympic hockey player, and Nico, an Olympic figure skater, meet during the Winter Olympics and quickly become inseparable. Their connection is immediate, and while the romance definitely moves fast, they were so charming together that I didn't even mind.
What I loved most was how much respect they had for each other's sport. Nico knows nothing about hockey, and Roman knows nothing about figure skating, but they both take the time to learn about and appreciate what the other loves. It made their relationship feel incredibly supportive and genuine.
Roman was probably my favourite character. Beneath the tough hockey-player exterior, he's such a sweetheart. Paired with Nico's fun, sassy personality, they balanced each other perfectly. Their nightly walks, bench conversations, and showing up for each other's events were some of my favourite moments.
The pacing felt a little odd at times, with some competition moments happening off-page when I would have liked to see more of them, but it didn't take away from how enjoyable the story was overall.
✨ Hockey player x figure skater ✨ Olympic romance ✨ Grumpy x sunshine ✨ Size difference ✨ Instalove vibes ✨ Low angst
A cute, cosy romance full of sweet moments, mutual support, and two athletes falling hard for each other on the world's biggest stage.
Roman's mom: "Are you sure you want to do this?" Why would she imply that going to the Olympics was somehow any but an honor? I'd understand if the story was considering the politics/ethics of the Olympics, but that obviously wasn't an angle this story was playing so the mom asking if Roman was sure about doing something that had nothing but prestige was super super awkward.
Roman's mom again: I just want you to be happy and settle down." I think this author needed to do a readability pass on this convo. The mom is clearly having a separate conversation than what exactly was happening in the moment. You cannot just fit in the "I wish you'd settle down" cliché into random scenes and assume it works because it's literally nonsensical here for the mom to bring that up when Roman was leaving for a flight to the Olympics. This would've made sense maybe if Roman was coming out of a forced retirement (because of an injury) and his mom was scared that he was going to get injured again, but as it is, Roman being an active hockey player with nothing holding him back other than his age made this short exchange read really bad to me. Not a great way to start a book if the dialogue was already hamfisted into explaining a conflict.
Nico's chapter got me to DNF. "Etienne and I this. Etienne and I that. I'm this. He's that. We're this." So very very very boring expodumps. 1.5 stars rounded down.
If you love hockey romance, this one is a must-read! 🏒✨

Nico and Roman’s story is packed with emotion and completely pulled me in from the start. Their connection felt natural, intense, and so easy to fall into. I loved the contrast between them, grumpy meets soft, force meets grace, and how perfectly they balanced each other.
The storytelling was engaging and flowed effortlessly. Getting both of their perspectives made their journey even more powerful, especially as they navigated their challenges and growing feelings. You really feel everything right along with them.
What stood out most was how smooth and addictive the story felt,it just worked. It had me in a total chokehold in the best way.
Overall, this story not only met my expectations,it exceeded them. I couldn’t put it down, and I’m already excited to see what Penny Fox writes next! 💖
I’m very new to Penny Fox’s work and I’m looking forward to reading more. This was a quick, sweet & enjoyable read. I thought that Nico & Roman were good together and their attraction was very obvious from their first meeting. This book is about Roman, a Team USA ice hockey player & Nico, a Team Canada figure skater who meet and form an instant connection, that turns into so much more than they both expected while competing at the Winter Olympics.
I thought it was cute how they both got tickets to each of the other events so they could be there to support the other while they were completing. I also liked how they tried to teach the other about their respective sports. I’m looking forward to reading Roman’s teammate Connor & Nico’s cousin/fake PA Étienne’s book, Date With Skates when it’s released later this year, as well as more books from Penny Fox in the future. I’d recommend this book and author to others.
******I received a complimentary copy of this book through GRR. I would still happily review this book even if I purchased it myself. My thoughts and feelings about this book are completely unbiased******
This is the cutest thing ever!! Roman and Nico have both made it to the Olympics—Roman for the US hockey team and Nico as a Canadian figure skater. Roman ends up at one of Nico’s practices, and they’re inseparable from then on.
I loved how these two went to each other’s games/performances and how they went on walks after and how they sat on that bench at the end of every night. I loved how they talked and got to know each other. I loved how sweet and gentle Roman always was and how fun and cute Nico was.
I died over these two falling into bed together and their whirlwind romance during the Olympics and how they both wanted something more, but neither of them wanted to say anything because they were afraid the other thought this was just an Olympics-fueled moment.
These two were so great and I loved Étienne and Conner and died over these four and how Nico and Étienne came to Roman and Conner’s game after the Olympics were over and how they all found a way to be together. This was a super fun little book, and I really enjoyed these two!
Picking up a Penny Fox book is delightfully unpredictable, and Fate on Skates delivers emotional ambushes, laughter, and swoon-worthy moments all at once. Set during the Olympic Games, it follows Roman, a stoic hockey defenseman with a surprisingly soft heart, and Nico, a dazzling, confident figure skater. Their chemistry is electric, blending grump with marshmallow, strength with grace, and banter with heat.
The story also features a rich supporting cast and thoughtfully explores the stigma LGBTQ+ athletes still face, adding depth without overshadowing the romance. Told from both perspectives, the narrative flows effortlessly, making their journey feel real and immersive.
Witty, heartfelt, and addictive, this romance glides between humor, heat, and genuine emotion. Fox crafts a story that keeps you hooked from the first page, and I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to see what she writes next.
This was beautiful. This is exactly why I love reading about 2 people falling in love.
I was hooked from the beginning. The longing and adoration they had for each other and their skills was so well done. It’s not the most angsty nor does it have a huge plot aside from their competing. Personally for me I don’t mind that, if the writing and characters are well done I just enjoy reading about them coming together.
There is quite a bit of internal monologue. I often see people don’t like that so this may not be for you if that’s the case. I love internal monologue so it was no issue for me. Reading about their thoughts and feelings and what’s going on in their head is part of the fun for me. Some parts at the end weren’t realistic probably? But to be very honest I don’t read romance for realism lol. So that’s not a big factor for me.
Read this in a couple hours and put off chores but so worth it!❤️
I grabbed this on a whim through KU, and overall, it was cute. It's mostly insta-love and fluff between a hockey player and a figure skater who meet while competing at the Olympics. The romance develops pretty quickly and easily, and there isn't much conflict beyond one communication issue that didn't really make a lot of sense to me.
I also felt like the characters went from being pretty open with each other to completely avoiding their feelings the one time it really counted, and then back again by the end. I also think everything worked out a little too conveniently throughout the story. It was sweet, but not especially believable, and I think it would have benefited from at least some low-stakes drama to give the relationship more depth.
That said, if you're looking for a quick, fluffy sports romance with lots of sweetness and very little angst, this might work for you.
This was such a wonderful story between two different guys and falling in love can be inspiring. Roman and Nico's story a quick read, author created the ambiance of different characters/teams gathered for events of teams competing in all types of competitions that I felt a part of those vibes...liked that feeling...slow build of relationship, entertaining characters, great storyline and plot, engaging banter, wonderful chemistry. Liked the informative knowledge differences between ice skates and regular skates tidbits...I did NOT know this before hand...the scene between Nico and Roman iceskating was captivating, sweet and melted my heart...
I received a free copy and leaving my honest review voluntarily.
Taking place during the Winter Olympics, this delightful MM romance follows Roman and Nico—two completely different athletes whose connection feels both fun and heartfelt. Roman, a quiet and physically imposing hockey player, contrasts perfectly with Nico, a confident and captivating figure skater who thrives in the spotlight. Their relationship builds with a mix of sharp banter, warmth, and undeniable chemistry, making their connection feel both natural and engaging. Their differences complemented each other, creating a dynamic that was equal parts entertaining and swoon-worthy. I really enjoyed this novella, especially with its lively cast of side characters and vibrant Olympic setting, which together create a charming, easy read that balances humor, emotion, and romance beautifully.
Do you ever judge a book by its cover? Yeah, I know we aren't supposed to...but I fully did with this book and got pretty much what I judged - a fun, sweet, at times funny and spicy book about a solid, serious hockey player and a charming, pretty boy, maybe sassy twink ice skater. I enjoyed the storyline itself as well as the characters. This is an opposites attract, insta-lust, relatively fast-paced story that I pretty much devoured in one lazy afternoon in bed. It's low angst and somewhat fluffy in all the best ways, while still having some sincere emotions between the MCs. Here's another good read that I thoroughly enjoyed from Penny Fox!
A true feel good book that will leave a big smile on your face. I mean, how can you not love a book about romance and sports on skates i.e. figure and hockey. the main characters, Roman and Nico, are total opposites from different countries, different personalities and approach the world differently, but there’s an instant spark that they have at the Olympics. Thus starts a low angst, charming romance that both expect will end once the Olympics are over, but again, the heart knows what the heart knows and wants. I read this in one setting cause I had to know how it ended because these two men got into my heart. You will not be disappointed in this Reid.
There was so much here to like. A Canadian figure skater and an American Hockey player meet at the Olympics. Nico and Roman find themselves competing at the highest level and finding something happening that is even more than going for the gold. They are instantly attracted to one another and both are thinking that like the games their time together is intense and has a short timeline. At least that is what they thought at first. But they want more, but live in different places. This low angst story of working out how to pursue love beyond the games was a quick and enjoyable read. I received an ARC from GRR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I love watching the Olympics. Summer/Winter, it doesn't matter, but my favorite winter sports are hockey and figure skating. When I discovered this book, I ran to download as soon as it was available. Roman and Nico are absolutely adorable. Roman is your grumpy defensive giant of a defensive man, who is so soft for those he loves. Nico is stupid talented and his ego supports every bit of that talent but in such a fun and charming way. Their story will have you laughing 🤣, fanning yourself as you get a drink of water 🥵 and figuring out how you can make a trip to the next Olympic games happen.
The timing of this one was perfect! I kind of felt like I was part of the competitions myself! The comradery and comfortable banter between friends and teammates were all here. I love that Roman was such a big guy who seemed intimidating but completely cannot help but give away his soft side for Nico. I loved watching him fall for Nico who came across with the energy and confidence of the incredibly talented skater he was, but who was actually such a genuine guy. These two were opposite perfection in every aspect!
DNF at 14%. The writing is just not great. The sentences are too short, you shouldn't have so many periods, where are the smooth transitions? It felt like we were jumping between scenes nonstop, it was really awkward and confusing, and I apologize if I come off as mean, I just like being sincere with my reviews. That being said, I fear this book comes off as a bad written fanfic. Which is sad because it's a very short read, if the writing had been better I would have pushed through and finished it.
Fun, fast-paced, and extra steamy. It's low on the angst and easy to devour with adorable guys who are super into each other and can't get enough falling fast. Penny Fox is always easy to read and entertaining.
Roman and Nico are so freaking cute together. Roman is protective, loyal, and patient. Nico is confident, shining so bright and so fun. I loved them together.
