Clara Roberts has had more downs than ups in life and just wants to do what she loves best, teaching. She just graduated from college and to her surprise she gets a job offer at Hopewell Prep. Things seem to be looking up for her until she meets Alexei Dvornikov. He frightens and excites her all at the same time. Excitement at this time in her life is just what she needs. But not from her 18 year old student. Clara doesn't understand why she is so drawn to him, but Alexei does and he won't stop until she is his. And if anyone stands in his way, heads will roll.
OK, so I intentionally did not review this last night after DNF'ing. I was a little too irritated and I realize that without reading the full book, leaving a rating and review is already less than ideal. Still, for the sake of other like minded readers, I wanted to say something. I was hesitant to try just because of the description of her being older and he being a student. Let me say that is NOT the problem here. She's not technically older than him as he is an immortal. So if that's your only reservation-no worries on that score.
PRO's: This cover is lovely. The physical description of the "hero" is fairly appealing. The heroine is described as having relaxed hair. For me, this is a pro just because everyone seems obsessed with natural or some UNnatural version of black hair re: flowing tresses. Relaxed is actually refreshing to me at this point.
That's it.
CON's: The things that happen within the first chapter of this book make absolutely ZERO fucking sense.
I'll start by saying this author is obviously a Twilight fan. I saw enough similarities to see the spin she took (ageless hero attending high school who is unnaturally beautiful as are his sister and various other relatives that attend said school). If she's not a Twi-hard, I apologize but stand by my thought that the similarities are there. Glaringly so.
We have a young teacher, recently graduated from college (22 I think). All in the span of her FIRST DAY on the job, she is more or less TOLD by the hero/ie her presumably 18 year old high school STUDENT that she has no choice but to tolerate and accept his advances. Now, that's off enough right? No, evidently not because next we have a coworker advising her not to make waves by objecting to said student's advances AND THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL flat out telling her if the boy wants to have an affair with her, she best shut up and do it if she values her career. Say wha? I mean, I KNOW we're all supposed to be intrigued by the obvious fear he engenders in everyone. Still, there is no inner dialog about how RIDICULOUS people are behaving, no mention by the heroine of how inappropriate it is that she is being advised to do this. She goes home....AND THINKS ABOUT IT! Next day we have her telling this boy, her supposedly 18 year old STUDENT that if they are going to do this its going to be on her terms and there are rules! I shit you not folks, within 24 hours she makes a conscious decision to sleep with a student. Day two of a teaching career. His response? Boy basically grabs her, tells her her rules mean nothing to him and they will all be broken. That's that.
That's when I pulled the plug. It was too much. Bad enough they have this supposedly giant, gorgeous Russian (yes, she checked off all the current IR hottie boxes to create this guy)strutting around with his family entourage through a prep school. How cool or powerful CAN you even be IN HIGH SCHOOL to an adult woman??
