Wired Differently: The six types of ADHD you've never heard of.

Rate this book
The ADHD System You’ve Never Been Told About.

You're not disorganized. You're not inconsistent. You're not broken. You're wired differently — and there's a system for that.
Most ADHD advice was built for brains that don't work like yours. That's why it hasn't worked.
Wired Differently introduces the ADHD Archetype System©, a framework developed from years of living with ADHD as well as working alongside neurodivergent minds. It finally explains the real patterns behind your motivation, energy, follow-through, and overwhelm.
You'll discover which of the 6 ADHD archetypes you are — Visionary, Starter, Seeker, Doer, Reactor, or Connector — and why that changes everything about how you work, relate, and recharge.
Inside, you'll uncover:
The hidden "tricksters" silently derailing your best intentions.
The strengths you've been told are flaws.
The circuit breakers that interrupt your patterns before burnout hits.
Strategies built around your archetype — not someone else's brain.
This isn't about forcing yourself into a system that doesn't fit. It's about understanding your wiring, reducing shame, and building a life that works with your brain instead of against it.
Different doesn't mean deficient. It means it's time for a different approach.

In “ wired differently”, Grant Pye not only gives an interesting insight in his framework of six archetypes of ADHD, he also provides valid strategies to overcome the obstacles of each ADHD archetype.
He defines the six archetypes, the visionary, the reactor, the connector, the doer, the starter, and the seeker. He the starter, and the seeker. He provides a short assessment to identify once own archetype, a detailed description of the specifications of each archetype, as well as strategies that help leverage one’s own strength and weaknesses in everyday working and private life.
Even though I was critical about Grant, not being an educated psychologist, I found his thoughts in this book very also to understand my own strength and weaknesses. Definitely an interesting book to read for those who struggle with their abilities and everyday life.

If you ever said at least one of these to yourself, get this book! You're welcome!

This new idea is better - drop everything and chase it

Say yes now, figure it out later

If it doesn't feel meaningful, it's not worth doing

You can't start until you have all the information

it's not urgent yet. I'll do it when it actually matters

Just one more conversation before I decide

No better way to explain how good an ARC is than by saying I bought the physical book.
I started reading this about two months ago, but life happened in some of the worst possible ways and left me with no mental capacity for meaningful reading before the book was released.
And yes, the irony of being unable to complete a book about finishing projects was not lost on me…

I do want to mention that this is a self published book and I suggest keeping this in mind. While I loved it and probably will be a trusted friend for a long while, it does have a few issues that an editor could have cleaned up. Hopefully there will be a more polished second version and I look forward to buying that one as well. Until then, I would still recommend it as a very good tool for both understanding yourself and creating a healthier world, a world that better accommodates your needs.

What initially attracted me to the ARC was the novel approach to ADHD. Instead of considering ADHD just as a spectrum and talking about everything in a more or less random order, it divides the conversation into categories that can be acted upon individually.
You start by taking 10 questions for each of the 6 categories. These help you identify specific areas that might be worth exploring further. And each of these archetypes can be read about entirely on their own. My only issue here was that one of the assessments (the second one) was broad enough that was a false positive for me.

What I enjoyed most was the author's understanding of the subject and the care taken to establish a common language around these categories. The book highlights both the strengths and the trickeries that can leave you feeling lost in a world not designed for you. It helps you identify challenges and provides strategies for navigating them.
One idea that comes up repeatedly is that most people are an amalgam of several archetypes, which can sometimes work against one another. While the book provides examples and how to work handling this complexity, I wish greater emphasis was put on this aspect.
Part of why I feel an editor would have been valuable is that the contract between what the book initially promises and where it eventually goes feels slightly inconsistent. While much of the discussion focuses on identifying these patterns, the book gradually shifts toward habit formation, team building, and helping people better understand one another's strengths and weaknesses.
There were also several points where I found myself wanting a deeper exploration of the ideas being presented. The author's expertise is evident and I wish more of that depth had made it on page.

Overall, this is the best ADHD book I have ever encountered. And considering how many half read ADHD books are sitting on my shelves, that says quite a lot about the quality offered here.

This is a great book for anyone who has, suspects or otherwise identifies with having ADHD. Its a book written by someone who just gets it, and gives amazing coaching type advice and information. There is a detailed assessment so we really can find solutions that work for our unique profile, because, let’s face it, ADHD presents in so many different ways. I was surprised with my results but with hindsight they made perfect sense!

I admit I skimmed a lot of the intro (because y’know, ADHD!) but the author is super validating in acknowledging that we will jump about depending on what grabs our interest and has structured the book in such a way that this is totally ok.

What absolutely captured my attention was the assessment - I started here and worked my way through the book backwards and forwards from here.

Once you have identified your primary and secondary types you can deep dive into each. Each type is presented in a similar pattern. Starting with ‘Understanding your pattern’ and taking it from there. It then offers supportive strategies having illustrated where difficulties show up - this makes the book super practical. It involves reframing to keep brains happy and engaged. Advice on ‘sharing your type’ is also featured.

Section 3 features implementation and advanced strategies and applies to all types with differentiation where needed. This section features health, routines and so much more.

Having read this book I am amazed at how accurate it felt for me -so many ‘aha!’ moments! It is a book to be kept, treasured and referred back to - essential reading!! I really can’t recommend this resource highly enough.

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.

This book claims to introduce six new ADHD archetypes, but those labels don’t match the three established ADHD presentations. The so-called types like “Visionary” and “Doer” are just the author’s own categories, repackaging traits most ADHD readers already know.

The first half covers familiar ADHD concepts without clear sources, then reorganizes common struggles like novelty-seeking, idea overload, and perfectionism into branded groups. Readers will likely see themselves in multiple categories, making the whole system feel more like a personality quiz than a useful framework.

The second half shifts to generic self-help advice: reduce friction, externalize ideas, simplify routines. Some tips are fine, but none offer real solutions for time blindness, task paralysis, or distraction in the moment. The advice stays vague and recycled.

The book avoids framing ADHD purely as a deficit, which is a plus. But the archetypes add unnecessary branding, and the practical guidance doesn’t deliver anything new. Newcomers might find parts helpful but you should keep in mind that the archetypes aren't ADHD language. Anyone familiar with ADHD books will recognize this as repackaged material with a different marketing angle.

Wired Differently by Grant Pye
5/5
Being someone who has ADHD, the self-help and physiological books has always drawn me in. I knew I had to read this when the author went into detail about the subcategories of ADHD rather than just grouping all of us into one.

I really enjoyed this book and actually took some notes to reference to later. The author does mention in the beginning that this book is different from any other ones you have read. I couldn't help but role my eyes, every book says that. He actually proved me wrong. He gives real life advice that is easily adaptable to fit into your life. The paragraphs are structured shorter and he gives recaps of the main ideas multiple times so you don’t have to read the chapter if you don't want to. There is also real-world examples to show how the subtypes and their qualities manifest into life. The author really knows his audience and it shows.

The only thing I do not like is the cover. I feel that it does not draw the reader in and show how great the book truly is.

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to be an ARC reader. I cannot wait to see what the author puts out next
