Who is Logan’s father? The question has been whispered behind his back all his life. He’s ignored it, forced himself not to care, but when Belos starts demanding an answer to this very question, it takes on a new and disturbing significance.

As the race to answer this question begins, others rise in its wake, unearthing a mystery that could shake the very foundation of Earthmaker life, a mystery that could shake the whole world apart.

But Astarti has more immediate concerns. Logan is in grave danger, and she’s desperate to get to him before he is destroyed--body, mind, and soul.

** Thanks to the author for providing me with an ebook copy in exchange for a honest review.**

I First fell in love with this series when I read The Griever's Mark (the first in this series). I thought it couldn't get any better. When I had finally completed the first I needed the second. However this one had yet to come out. So I waited and then finally got my hands on this. It was definitely worth the wait!!

There were certain things about this book that made me like the series so much more. The characters themselves are brilliantly written and well thought out. I feel like this book made me appreciate the series even more because you got to see the raw emotions of all the characters that didn't get shown in the first book. I love the way Logan & Astarti communicated with each other. Their connection is quite astonishing and I love that sometimes they may say nothing to each other, but they still understood what the other was thinking or what the other needed. I also really loved Horik. I liked the way he interacted with Astarti, and the way he treated her like a little sister was adorable. I also had a lot of respect for him as a character as well.

The story line itself was very intriguing. There was never a moment where I felt lost or confused, even with the two point of views from Logan and Astarti. The story also gave off a lot of emotions as I was reading it. I also really liked that it ended with a cute romantic scene, it was the prefect way to conclude this book and allow readers to still want to read the third.

Overall I suggest reading this book along with reading the first The Griever's Mark. It was well written and I hope you enjoy it as much a I did.

3/27: I NEED this book NOW!!! I have 5% left in The Griever's Mark and I've just gone back about 7 chapters to re-read because I just can't let it be over!! Seriously, this series is SO. GOOD!

OMG!! THIS BOOK IS SOOOOOOO GOOD!!
The Cover
The cover is so damn awesome! I mead just look at it! The gold colour? The girl and guy on it? (Astarti and Logan) It is perfection!

The Plot
So the story of this book picks up where the last one ended. I was kind of seriously jumpy because I had no idea what to expect from Katherine. Kats writing is both Ya consistent and not. Some parts of her story follow the usual type of plots, others? Not so much. I usually guess a plot of a story long before it is revealed but Kat sometimes confuses me. (Its very hard to confuse me.) Books like these usually don’t have very great writing (sorry but its kind of the truth) but this book? The writing blows me away! Like I said before, it kick starts my epic imagination mode. I love both the main characters Astarti and Logan. Astarti is strong. She is determined and Kickass. But she is totally oblivious of her beauty and inner strength! Logan see's that. But Logan is totally messed up this time. He went through insane amount of mental and physical torture so he isn't the Logan we all know.
At the start of the book Astarti's conversations with Heborian made me cry for some reason. I guess I felt the way Logan feels. Being a daughter myself, and a sentimental one at that, I just felt sorry for Astarti. Because let's face it , Heborian is a right old bastard. I mean he isn't even sorry for his actions?? He should be. He should be begging her forgiveness even though he doesn’t deserve it. He.... he is a father, isn’t he supposed to try? He just thinks that it is somehow going to be all right between them?? I don’t know it just made me cry, like the actual tears-streaming-down-my-face crying. I loooooooooooooooove Hordik! Hordik is awesome I hope he has an even bigger role in the next books! I like Giana too. I kind of imagine her as Aqua man's (from the justice league??) mother. She is exactly as I imagine Giana, though maybe Giana is a bit more soft.
By the way IT FINALLY HAPPENS!! WHAT WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR!!

Final reactions/conclusions?
This is loosely related to Norse gods. The old gods story that the chieftan tells?? It is exactly as the Viking myths. Actually to be honest, I already imagined Heborian and Hobrik like Vikings, so when their Runic dewelling was described? It clicked! (actually it clicked when Hobrik said he favoured his axe but now I am a hundred percent sure!) I love the world building here and after that ending? After what Belos does? I am feeling the same way I did when I read queen of shadows and Aelin finds out that Erawan is rising!! I can't wait for the next book!!

After the ending of the griever's mark, I kinda feared reading this second part. I wanted to wait until part 3 is released (because maybe Mrs Hurley loves writing cliffies?!).
But for my pretty-cover-challenge this month, I picked it up (I'm in love with the cover)- and couldn't put it down.
This is a beautiful and well written second installment, I was back into the world within a couple of pages. All my favorite characters are back and there is another new one, which I fell in love with instantly.
The part I love most is the intriguing world and its setting. It is a little different and pretty complex, but I like using my brain while reading (too many easy and predictable storylines out there anyway).
And did I mention the writing style?! It is just so nice and effortless, but still heartbreakingly beautiful. This author knows how to use words and weave them into a story.
I can't wait to read the next and final book- because this ending (of course) leaves you hanging.

AHHH!!!! A wonderful sequel! Every bit as good as the first book (and possibly better)!

do it again

Yeah you did Katherine!!!

Seriously - awesome. We learn so much about our characters in this book:
Who is Logan's father?
What is Astarti's history?
Can they save each other in time?
What does Belos really want?
How could the entire fiber of the world be ripped in two?

no biggie

But no really. Be dramatic. this book takes it to another level.

I honestly CANNOT wait for book 3!!!!! bring it on!!!

Book type: YA Fantasy
Book rating: 4.7/5

Not too surprisingly, this is the weakest entry for the trilogy. It falls into the usual trap of being a 'bridge' book, where you can tell that most of what is happening is set up for the final conclusion. And, like the first book in the trilogy, you can't read it standalone.

All up I really liked this trilogy, so I feel bad giving this a low star rating, but since I'm struggling to even really remember what happened in this installment (and I only read it yesterday) that probably gives you a good indication of how much actually 'happened'.

That said, I still strongly recommend the trilogy. Fascinating world and some good characters. Still quite bleak - with a lot of reference to self-harm, which really hits home in the third book - but I think it handles the topic with a degree of sensitivity that other books would lack.

Beautiful love story mixed with action.
I love this book. It might not get my heart to speed up with excitement or make my stomach hurt with worry, but I'm never ever bored and it keeps me guessing and wonder how things are connected.
What I love the most Is that one of the characters is going trough traumatic events and finally, a book where it shows! It doesn't all go away after a few chapters. No the trauma comes and goes. I love how realistic it seems.
I love how the love between Astarti and logan develops. I would like to see more up the side characters, but I have a hope that I might get it in the last installment.
Also could someone kill belos all ready. Slow and painful.

Astarti and logan´s story continues.
Who is logans real father? What sort of being is he?
Astarti is hell bend on finding logan and safe him from the worst being that there is. Belos succeed in leashing Logan and will do everything to keep it that way.
The love between Logan and Astarti is still growing and probably the only light in the dark plot.

The second book of a trilogy, did not keep my interest as the first book did and towards the end I felt Katherine totally lost the plot. The confusion and events just did not keep the integrity of the first book and the first part of this one. I'm hoping the final book is more coherent and brings back the grounding to the story.

The magic system is interesting, the development of the characters and their relationships is good but holy shit, the exploration of abuse and ptsd is brutal but necessary. I’m so glad this book doesn’t just gloss over the impact imprisonment has had on these characters. Logan breaks my heart 💔

If you’re looking for a beautiful character led fantasy then give this series a shot.

Overall, this is a really great book.
**There may be spoilers, but they do not go into detail**
So Astarti is back and she is kicking butt like always! This book definitely took a darker turn than the first one (which was a little dark in its own right) and it worked for me. Logan, as you know if you have read the first book, was taken and Leashed by Belos. We get to see the agonizing struggle that Logan is going through to keep his mind and body his own and we get to see Astarti in a state of desperation. She is tortured by the fact that Logan is being held by that butthead, she knows some of what will be done to him and has seen it when he begged her to end him.
Yet, we experience her helplessness, she is stuck. She can’t possibly rescue Logan and cut his Leash without help. She is awesome, but there is no way she can fight Belos and his Seven all on her own. Insert all those awesome backup characters we met in the first book. Heborian, her father, who is equal parts admirable and shady af, Hordick, by far my favorite dude in the series, and, of course, Bran the most innocent of nerds. They all play their part perfectly in keeping Astarti pieced together and guiding her to becoming her own individual thinker. Helping her retrieve Logan and giving her strength as she tries to piece Logan back together.
This book definitely portrays some dark themes like depression, paranoia, self-loathing, and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is done in a way that is totally relatable to adults and teens, especially those who experienced/experience addiction to cutting or other forms of self-harm. I particularly like that is isn’t Astarti that is feeling most of those things. I think it is more effective to see Logan, a potential demi-god that has all the makings of being your catalogue “knight and shining armor”, struggle with himself. A struggle that predated his captivity and was intensified because of it. He wasn’t magically all better once he was saved.
Overall, this is a really great book.

Top 3 things I loved about this book:
1.I really appreciated Logan’s struggle and mentality throughout the book, it was realistic and heart-wrenching.
2.Hordick. That’s really all I have to say about it. Just kidding! He is amazing, I love him. He is who I would marry if he was real. *Sob* Why is he a fictional character!? He is gruff and honest, loyal and kind. What more could you want? Oh yeah, he is tall and beefy and hot!
3.Logan and Astarti’s relationship is something to be admired. They love each other and are committed. Committed in the true definition of the word. No matter what they are to each other and no matter what those around them are, they have each others backs. They accept the ugly and the beauty that each possess, they love each other more for them.

Top 3 things that I disliked about this book:
1.Gaiana’s explanation of how Logan was conceived. I understand not wanting to give all the details about a plot hook like that, but at the same time it was more confusing than helpful to me. I don’t like how Logan just accepted this from his mother with no anger at being lied to. It was really the worst part of the book because, in my opinion, she is portrayed as a victim almost? I don’t know, but it was the biggest hang up for me.
2.Astarti not confronting Logan. Ugh! I know she wants to give him space to heal but she doesn’t push him at all! Why!? He needs it!
3.The release of Kronos and how Belos was able to capture him like a cranky pokemon. I mean, there wasn’t even a fight! Bah.

Seriously, if you haven’t read the first book do it!! If you haven’t read this book, do it!!! They are fantastic and captivating. Katherine Hurley did an amazing job on this book and I have a hard time with series becoming the same story over and over. That is not the case with this series and I appreciate it more for it. I really hope you enjoy the book and let me know what you think!

This transitional book actually caused me pain. Don't read this review if you haven't read the first book since there are some spoilers that cannot be helped.

Belos, as I have already celebrated in my review of The Griever's Mark, is the awfullest breathing being I've read about in some time. He out-does himself when he gets his hands on Logan, who I also mentioned is/was emotionally unstable already. At this point, I'm questioning Belos' intelligence. It's possible he's just a maniac with a death-wish. And I am certain I don't like torture in general and I detest it in detailed specifics. So... much of this book went beyond gritty for me into the realm of feeling like there was blood stuck to my hands as I read it.

Ok... that's dramatic, isn't it? Well, it was much too realistic and I really got into the whole thing and it was NOT pleasant.

Astarti felt trapped in this second book instead of competent. The story pulls away from her mind to welcome Logan's POV, as well, and I resisted. Old-school sci-fi fantasies were delivered in 3rd person and I grudgingly resigned myself to accepting the familiar distance. It was frustrating, though, since the two characters go through so much and their emotions swing on a huge pendulous as they adjust to their growing relationship.

This book is really two stories in one... there's a big break in the middle where I found some relief before launching into part 2. But mostly I wanted to deny a lot of this book as "wrong". Torture leads to issues and the action doesn't pause long enough for anyone to find healing. Questions are raised regarding fathers for both of them and no answers are neat -n- tidy.

And please, what is Astarti doing at Logan's feet on the cover?

I suppose Logan took the stage in this volume, but I still got most of my info from Astarti and was, frankly, frustrated. I wanted MORE inside their head and emotions, which I had before. I also wanted the answers they were searching hard for and I began to wonder if the hope I was grasping for was too HEA for this series.

I'm pretty sure I gave this book 4 stars because I didn't want to eat or sleep or take any breaks while reading it, which is fantastic. But... how frustrating!! So many things are held just out of grasp. There are too many secrets, either to protect or evade or just due to plain ignorance. Thank goodness book #3 was out before I read this one. Hello!!! Can you imagine? If you love the first book, definitely read this one. But have the final at your fingertips, too, and just clear your reading schedule 'til you get through all of 'em.

This is a sequel, but any spoilers for the first book are hidden. See my review of Griever’s Mark.

It took me a moment to remember the events of the past book, but it came back. (Definitely not a stand alone sequel.) Astarti annoyed me at first. I understand she’s angry, but she’s so bitter and mean! Either she improved or I got used to her though, because she only bothered me at the beginning.

In many ways this felt like a second book. It was necessary and things happen, but it felt like all the good stuff was being saved for the ending. (Know what I mean?)

The mystery of Logan’s origins was well done and I never would’ve guessed it. I enjoyed how it was woven into the world.

The world building was one of the many things I loved about the first book. It continued to be well done and oh so cool! (Whispers “mermaid”) Some things which weren’t explained now make perfect sense! I love the intricacy of the world!

I didn’t like Logan’s POV in this one.

We do meet a couple of good new characters. Mostly Horik, the king’s champion. He’s big and tough and such a sweetie!

There’s still a little romance, but it isn’t nearly as fun as book one. (I keep saying that, don’t I?) It was dark and serious instead of fun and teasing. There are a couple lighter moments, but then they’re sucked back down.

That was my main problem with Chains of Water and Stone, it was so dark! But, I’m still glad I read it and I plan to read the finale! Where is it?! (Looks around)

Note: the characters never dress like they do on the cover. It’s not that kind of book honest.

Point of View: First Present (Astarti, Logan)

Predictability: 3 out of 5 (Where 1 is totally unpredictable and 5 is I knew what was going to happen way ahead of time.)

I’m feeling like a teenage fangirl at the moment. I didn’t want to put this book down and I enjoyed it even more than the first one.

I’m going to use a phrase I’ve only used once before in a review. Ship! As in; I totally ship Astarti and Logan. Actually the plain and frumpy 14-year-old that still resides inside my head wants TO BE Astarti.

In this second instalment we follow Astarti as she fights to free Logan from Belos, the man who was previously her captor. Logan and Astarti’s love grows even more, with them finally admitting, damn the consequences, that they love each other. Their love is delicious and made me fell all warm and fuzzy inside.

Astarti finds a friend, helper and protector in Horik her father’s champion warrior. I loved Horik becoming a major character in this book.

Once Astarti and Horik have freed Logan, we see the three of them partake in a quest for the truth behind Logan’s parentage.

By the end of the book we have found out the truth about what Logan is and a power as old as time has fallen into dangerous hands. Kathrine has set herself up for an Epic third book.

This book has action, romance, revenge, mystic tales of old, destruction, family secrets, a world in turmoil, dancing, pub brawls, evil creepy old skeletal men, clashes between rival races, grandmother visiting, self-discovery, magic, mystery and mead.

I love the world Kathrine’s has created. I love Astarti blending the elements of her earth with the energy of her soul. Actually I find both Astarti and Logan’s powers beautiful and fascinating.

I’ve been trying to decide if this book would stand on its own or not. I think it would still be an enjoyable fantasy fling, but you need to read the first book first to get a grip on how evil Belos’s is and where Logan and Astarti’s love first began.

*I received a copy of this book from the Author in exchange for a fair and honest review.*

This is the second book in the series. You must read book one to fully understand book two!

I absolutely loved book one in this series. Not surprisingly, I loved this second book just as much. I think it grabbed me a little more than the first. This story is told mainly from Astarti’s point of view. It’s an intriguing story into how far Astarti is willing to go to save Logan. They take a journey through life after the major battle ending in book one through to Astarti willing to do anything to save Logan and together they must uncover who Logan’s father is.
One major thing that this author does a stand up job doing in her writing is her details and descriptions. There were times when I could have probably have done with less description (you’ll understand once you read it) but it really makes the scene and gives you an idea just how grave the visual should look. These details and descriptions set the story for you and could almost tell you the story without her words.
This story is action packed but not completely in an active sense. There is stuff going on that will keep you reading and immerse yourself into the story but it isn’t always high action. It’s a gripping story that will tug on your heart strings. It’s heart breaking at some of the things that they both have endured and even more so as you read, in detail, other things they went through. I would say it’s kind of a “heavy” story but it definitely wouldn’t be the story it is if it were a “happy go lucky” story.
Pick up your copy today and if you haven’t read book one, pick up book one first! You’ll thank me later, I promise!

Give me more!

I read the first book in about 5 hours and then jumped immediately into this one, finishing it the very next day, so that should tell you something. As several have already mentioned, this book is significantly darker than the first, and it stays that way pretty much the entire time. The lighter, cute moments are fewer and farther in between to make room for the necessary darkness that this book is really about. The writing is great and you find yourself with the characters. You will grow attached, and I really, really appreciate that. I have read many "good" books that would have been great if the characters had been more real to me, as it's hard to really be invested when you don't care what happens to whoever you're reading about. On the same level, I've read a lot of equally good books that had wonderful characters and a boring, yawn inducing plot. This book has both of what I desire, as the plot is also interesting and continues to give you new bits to wonder about. You never feel as if you know everything that will happen, which means you don't lose the possibility to be surprised by events. There are those you'll predict, but more you cannot.
Overall, this series is wonderful and one of my new favorites. I'm excited to see how Astarti and Logan's relationship will continue to develop, and to see what the author will do with some of the things brought to light in this piece of the series. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book, so hopefully it will be out shortly! I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys unique fantasy, strong characters, exciting plot twists and sweet romance (though I could use more of it!).

This installment is wonderful, through out the whole book, I can actually imagine how much pain and pressure the characters are enduring, sometimes I FEEL their feelings as if they were my own..
We got to see more of Logan in this one, as he discovers more of himself.. What he has gone through this book is unbearable.. But that only made me respect him more.. We got to see how fragile and at the edge of breaking he is yet still so strong and so caring..
And Astarti, I swear this girl is the awesomeness itself, I love her, I love how intelligent she is, and how she knows how to react with her surroundings, and how she deals with Logan, she is really good and clever in her way of caring for him, I love their relationship and how they lean on each other.. And what I love the most is how the author did exceed in viewing how much pain they both had gone through yet still they would do anything to fix the wrongness around them..
Speaking about wrongness, what was that last half of a page!? I couldn't possibly hate This Belos more than I do now, even if I tried harder, he is awful, he is racing professor Umbridge toward the finish line of the most evil villain competition ( and I am seeing him winning- truly).

More of the stuff I hated in the first book plus a little bonus idiocy thrown in. Offset by more time with Logan and Astarti together (I really did like her more seen through his eyes). All in all, not as good as book 1, but I will read the third book because I want to know what happens.

I only had one thing to say after finishing this book.....GIVE ME THE NEXT ONE! OMG this was amazing! Almost better than the first one. SO much happened in this book and there is still more to be explained. And the ending was a huge cliff hanger!
I absolutely love this series and the writing. The characters are amazingly written and unique. The world building is fabulous, and the plot is fantastic as well. I can't find anything I don't like about this series. I don't want to reveal too much about this book since it is the sequel, but it is flawless and just as good as the first. Can't wait for the series to continue and I hope it isn't a long wait! :D

Really Loved It

This is the sequel to The Griever's Mark and is definitely NOT a stand alone book. And the first one is utterly fantastic so should be read anyway!! I love fantasy when it's done right, which this series truly is. I like that there wasn't a lot of recap like most books, instead simply skimming the basics, because as I said, it's not a stand alone book. One of my favorite things about it,aside from the plot of course, is the author's verbiage. Its really quite beautifully written like the first. I would and have recommended the series to anyone who likes to read to "escape". 2 very enthusiastic thumbs up!

Enslaved souls and bound gods

This story blends the power of elements with the force of the soul in a unique and intriguing way. Where God's tread and souls are bound, love is the enduring tide between two individuals that fear the power of their origin. There is one whom covets their power and is ever entwined in their paths seeking more for revenge and destruction. If you want a story that keeps you guessing, filled with strife, magic, and close bonds, you will not be disappointed.

Turbulent. This book rises and falls to the rhythm of the tides and whims and wills of the characters. Logan is strong but teetering on broken in this novel. Astarti is his rock, his light. Together they strive to save themselves from their tortured pasts, yet the past will continue to haunt them as their tormentor lives on more powerful than ever. I don't know what's going to happen in the next book but I know it can't be good.

Maybe one day I'll be able to finish this story. But Astarti is the type of YA lead that makes me have a love-mostly hate relationship with the YA genre entirely. There is a difference from being a strong, independent, and smart female/character and just being rudely stubborn with no benefit to the story at all. I made it halfway through, up to the part where Logan spoked with his mother, and decided that there was no longer any reason to continue this.

I wasn't a huge fan of the first book in this series, but I was eager to see how things played so I decided to give book a try. I wasn't impressed. It was ok, but the plot was once again pretty slow moving and dull. I didn't care for the lack of closure either. I do think this has potential as a series, but I'm hesitant on continuing it. I've already downloaded book 3 since it was offered as a kindleunlimited but I really don't have much desire to jump into it at this point.

Good read :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book I couldn't put it down! I like how it gives a lot of answers to the questions from the previous book, but leaves you with new questions for the next one. I don't get the cover photo though, it doesn't seem to match the content of the book, if I hadn't read the first one I wouldn't have bought it.

I love this series!

Astarti, a fierce yet tender-hearted Drifter, meets wild and powerful Logan, a Warden, and though they're supposed to be enemies, they instantly feel a connection. Though a love story at its heart, there's plenty of gripping adventure & magic. I can't wait for the next book in the series!
