Beneath the Shattered Light

Rate this book
The prophecy deepens. The shadows sharpen. And the fates of three souls grow ever more entwined.
The thread holding together Azrael’s life is thinning, drained by a poison no magic can seem to touch. To save him, Auden and Everette embark on a perilous quest through cursed kingdoms and forbidden forests, chasing fragments of a prophecy that becomes more tangled with every step.
While Azrael fades, Everette remains fierce and steady—tethered to Auden in a way she can no longer ignore. Their reluctant alliance twists into something far more dangerous, igniting feelings that threaten her fragile control over her growing powers.
With the immortals lurking and the prophecy shifting beneath them, revealing Auden’s role in the coming war, she must decide whether to trust the bond strengthening between her and Everette… or sever it before it reshapes their fates entirely.
But as the threads of fate tighten around them, Azrael’s time is running out—and saving him may demand a sacrifice only Auden can make.

The journey (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) these characters go through from page one to the end make you truly question what is truly RIGHT, if there is such a thing. Is evil always darkness, or can there be goodness within shadows? Can you condemn Auden, Everette, or Damien? While this was outside my normal romance novel- I can appreciate good storytelling.

We left our heroes in book one, wounded and running from the undead, possibly immortal army created by King Brisbien. The trio has become a four-some with the addition of the seer Nephele. They make it to a healer and leave Azrael in a drug-induced coma with Nephele to look after him. Which leaves Auden and Everette with the quest to find a cure for Azrael’s magic-laced poisoned wound. Holy romantic tension!! They journey to a mysterious city of immortals in search of a healer and then potion ingredients that will save their friend and Auden's budding romantic interest, Azrael. The best addition to this book is a surprise animal companion, who is absolutely ferocious!

What you can expect:
continued sloooow burn
continued love triangle
hurt/comfort
forced proximity, hello only one bedroll!
deepening magical powers that function as a metaphor for mental health
a cave of terrors
the antagonist grows in power

What a second book in this trilogy by Zoe Zeman.~

Once again I got the privilege of reading the ARC she sent my way, and it does not disappoint.

Auden, Everett, Azrael and Nephele have fleed the kingdom and are now trying to find a cure for the poison that Brisbien attacked Azrael with. However, things are changing, since Auden is struggling with her powers, the truths she found out about and her own feelings towards her long time friend and her newest one.

The emotions are raw and guide the quick narrative, with new information about Immortals and the sawv, as well as who are Auden parents and why does Brisbien really wants her and used Everett for it.

Towards the end, the stakes are high, death is imminent and a plot twist changed everything... or ist it plot twists?
