When reading urban fiction, I expect unhinged MCs, shootouts, a lot of gang ish. So imagine my surprise when I saw an urban fiction from one of my favorite contemporary romance authors? I went in with all of those previous expectations, but none of it was delivered. And you know what? I'm glad it wasn't.
They loved each other so well and Xavier, though young, was very intentional. He knew what he wanted and went after it. He put thought behind their dates and meant every word when he said he wanted to see her everyday for those 69 days.
One thing I loved about this book was how we got to witness a little bit of his prison time and his train of thoughts when he reentered society. Seeing how much the world changed through his eyes.
Now here were my problems: 1) Something about the writing was off. It was choppy. The dialouge, though good, was a bit confusing. I don't want to accuse AI of being used, but knowing how AI constructs the flow of sentences made my antennas go up. I don't think it was used for the entire book, but there were parts that was evident. You could tell the difference in the writing for certain scenes.
2) I loved everything about this book, except the Natalie storyline. It was unexpected and underdeveloped. We didn't really get enough background on her for this to be the big climax. It felt like it was just thrown in there for the sake of drama, but unfortunately it did not land for me.
3) The introduction of new characters this late in the book. Again, for this to be the climax, I feel like we should have gotten to spend time with Chanel during her college years to really have a connection to what was going on. It felt like something that was completely thrown out of left field.
I'm also a bit confused on what they are trying to do with Channy as far as X's old charges are involved. It seems like they are trying to take it back to court with new evidence, but Double Jeopardy...
Maybe we'll get a clearer picture in the sequel, because I will certainly be tuning in.

This book cracked me open in ways I expected… and in ways I didn’t. Bulletproof Love pulled every emotion to the surface. Laughter, tears, anger, heartbreak, and that quiet heaviness that lingers long after the last page.
Chanel and Xavier are the kind of love story you don’t see coming. Unexpected, imperfect, and absolutely right. Their connection spans twenty years, shaped by time, loss, and the moments that change everything. Their love is raw, unfiltered, and painfully real.
L.B. Gaines doesn’t romanticize life when it gets hard. She shows us love in the aftermath. What it looks like when plans fall apart, when nothing looks the way it was supposed to, and when choosing each other still matters. Every emotion felt earned. Every page hit.
This story stayed with me. I loved it deeply, and I’m already waiting for what comes next. 🖤
Dang L.B. that’s how you leave us. Just right on the edge but i respect it. Gives me more of your work to look forward to.
L.B. is going to a beautiful story with some of the best quotes. She paints the picture of her characters and whatever they may be going through so well. Xavier and Chanel are no different. A story of true love from different sides of the track. No matter how much time has passed what is meant will always be. Xavier’s struggles and just wanting to survive. His mind, skills and writing are so beautiful. Chanel fighting for her own life trying not to get swallowed up and making it through. I do wish we actually went through some of what happened to her and just her life in general like we did with Xavier.
Chanel’s sister did get on my nerves. She acted like all of this was just a moment thing to only end up where she i was and with whom. Yes I’m happy when people change their life around but what she did had me side eyeing yet understanding. Some what (When you read the book you’ll get it). Anyways, the turn of events definitely had me like “wait a damn minute!” Things started popping off. Natalie, smh.
Favorite character: Xavier. His development was amazing. The things he accomplished, helped with and how he loved him some Chanel.
Xavier and Channy’s love story was one for the ages, so beautifully crafted, developed over time (although a short time);the details, dates, and intimate moments cemented their love as ageless.
I LOVED the love story. The development, the intention, the hopeful young lovers. It truly felt like a perfect blend of “The Best of Me” and “The Notebook” but with black characters. Loved it. The romance had me smiling was to ear. X is such a complex and layered character, he made this book so emotionally impactful. His layers, his flaws, his redemption; he makes you want to believe in second chances. His heart was always in the right place but life dealt his a deck of cards that made it difficult for him to get out of his situation. Beautiful character, can’t express it enough. Then, the story took a sudden and unexpected turn that threw me off.
1. The Natalie Storyline It truly came out of nowhere. First, the story is short. 279 pages short. The author did an incredible job putting together the love story, even 18 years of incarceration was written pretty dang good. Then out of nowhere, Natalie comes back with a vengeance but why? She was a one time bad decision that X made. Once & she did all of that? The story lacked development on how or why she became this secret stalker turned hit woman with a vendetta against Channy. It felt thrown into the story, in the middle of the second chance romance, without explanation. As if the purpose of the book was put on pause to start a whole new story without reason or context. I just wasn’t following how she became the main climax or the plot shift.
2. Who are these people at the end of the book? The love story was so beautifully written, you’re almost on a high of seeing where the second chance romance is going. Then all these random folks came out of nowhere, with little explanation, and they seem a bit all over the place. Who are they targeting? Channy? X? Zay? Yaya? Who even are “they?” I have no clue. One moment it’s Natalie against Channy, then the next it’s about what Channy did in college. I was not following. A background story on what happened in college would maybe add some context.
3. Channy’s divorce was glossed over. Maybe if the divorce had more context, the sudden switch in energy and Charles storyline would make sense. But it just didn’t land for me and I couldn’t understand why any of the Natalie x Charles storyline was added. It felt like an unnecessary cliffhanger because it all came out of nowhere without explanation. I wish there was a time jump after Channy & X found each other again and then more time spent on introducing the new characters and the “get back” storyline.
4. The Book 2 synopsis seems like it is shifting from Chanel and X to Zay and Yaya and that’s throwing me off. There is soooo much to still unpack with Chanel and X. We don’t even know why Yaya was taken by Charles when Chanel was his ex wife? I’m just so confused.
It felt like I was reading one book all the way up until page 233, then it’s like a new book started without much context. I would have loved to see more development between the second chance lovers & X as a step father before multiple storylines were introduced at the very end of the book.
—————— Love story: 5 stars. This was without a doubt one of the most painfully beautiful love stories written.
Climax/Plot shift: 2 stars. It was simply undeveloped. Not bad, just lacked a lot of context and “the point.”
Pacing: 4 stars. The author does a really good job making you fall in love with Chanel and X. The way she takes you through time while still making you love these imperfect yet beautiful dynamic characters is good writing.
Book length: The book simply needed to be longer. I could see this book broken up into parts which would have given it a much better flow and time to flesh out the details that were missing in pages 234-279 Part 1: Channy & X initial romance Part 2: Channy & X second chance romance Part 3: Flashback scenes to Channy college years, marriage/divorce, life with X after prison Part 4: The Natalie x Charles storyline & how it ties into the overall plot point
Overall, 5 star book up until page 234. Idk why the story changed suddenly and took a detour in that direction but it’s possible Book 2 may clear up what Book 1 missed.
I do recommend reading for the beautiful love story in this book. Intentional dating? 18 years of letters? 20 years of commitment to a person? Yes yes yes. Loved it so much, I would love to see these lost lovers find their way back to the romance they built in 2006.

thanks to ellekaygee pub for allowing me to read this ARC.
LB Gaines is truly one of my auto read authors, so when I saw that she was writing her first urban romance I couldn't wait to read it. She really does write love stories that feels 90s r&b packed with yearning and intention.
This story follows Xavier & Chanel, Chanel was finishing high school when her and her older sister sneak off to a house party put on by the king brothers. Xavier the younger of the King Brothers, was a young king pin running the streets along side his brother. They form an instant connection, but with Chanel getting ready to go off to college to chase her dreams of becoming a lawyer, they committed to getting to know each other over the summer. Things were going great, until Xavier finds himself in a situation where he has to spend time in jail. Can their budding love survive the time apart, or was this just a chapter they are forced to close?
The way LB Gaines was able to draw me Into the emotional thoughts that Xavier was going through behind bars, I didn't think I could feel for a man in the pen the way I felt reading his POV. She was able to add a gentleness and softness to an urban romance that I haven't read before. This story took me through all the feels, I was a able to connect with Chanel, who falls hard and fast, and wants to give up your dreams to chase after a boy especially when your family forbids it.
this story was packed with emotions, secrets, plot twists, and a love story that makes you believe that true love, soul mates exists. The last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat, and while it ended on a cliffhanger, I can't wait for book 2.
i was ready to jump off that cliff hanger honey the book was THAT good!!!
omg!!! this book was sooo good i sacrificed my sleep on a school night to read it!! let me tell you the plot was plotting! i usually don’t like when a good book ends on a cliff hanger without the sequel being out but for this one i am WILLING to wait (but please don’t take too long Ms. Gaines🥹🙏🏾). okay so boom we got the past and the present on Channel “Channy” and Xavier’s love story. good girl meets hood dude and falls in love over the course of the summer type love. except it’s everything BUT cliche. i was not cringing at all while reading. the spicy scenes were hitting, the storyline was amazing, it kept me on my toes and wanting more! i’m not going to spoil the plot but i will say it is a WORTHY read fs. get the book!!!!!
5 stars hands down! LB Gaines know how to write a good ass story and capture you from the beginning. This is her first urban romance and she did a bomb job. She didn’t disappoint at all. This story was filled with passion, love, secrets, a plot twist that will have you wanting more!
Chanel & Xavier was a true love story that will have you rooting for them to the very last page. The letters he wrote were so beautiful and emotional. I loved that part of the book so much.
Now these siblings of each main character were easy to dislike but after reading the book and letting it settle. I came to respect their character and decisions a little more.
This was a good story and I can’t wait for more. Thank you Ellekaygee for the arc.
Beautifully done! I loved everything about this story, from the banter the yearning, this is what I have been missing in some of the recent releases that have been dropping and LB Gaines hit this out of the park. I did not expect the twists and turns at the end of this didn’t see it coming at all. thought this was just gonna be a feel good story all the way through baby. I’m here for the drama. I need book 2 stat, but I have to say my favorite parts of this story was actually the conversations between him and his brother with his brother and those letters just did something to me. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
I LOVE a well written book!!! This was definitely that. The build up was so good. I definitely teared up a few times, love is honestly so beautiful.. and the TWIST? It’s always the twist, so unexpected, Can’t wait for pt. 2!
One summer! One Love One mistake Two broken hearts
Twenty years has passed! Can they rekindle what they had? Will life continue to get in the way? Or is this love really bulletproof. Thank you @ellekaygeepub and @lbgainestheauthor for the ARC!
Bulletproof Love by L.B. Gaines is the kind of urban romance that grabs you by the throat and whispers, “You’re not ready for this.”
Xavier and Chanel “Channy” are the definition of forbidden love. Good girl. Bad boy. Two hearts that were never supposed to collide—but did anyway.
When Channy’s life is in danger, Xavier does what a man who doesn’t play about his woman would do. He protects her. At all costs. Even when that cost is 15 years of his life behind bars.
And here’s where it hurts—in the best way.
While Xavier is locked away, he doesn’t harden… he grows. He writes Channy. He mentors other inmates. He carries love like a sentence he’s willing to serve forever.
Meanwhile, Channy leaves. She leaves Crestwood. Becomes a prosecutor. Becomes a mother. Becomes a woman married to a man who treats her like she’s disposable.
The contrast? Painful. Intentional. Real.
L.B. Gaines doesn’t just give us a second-chance romance—she gives us a reckoning. Love tested by time, choices, guilt, and the question we all dread:
👉 Can love survive who we had to become without each other?
And JUST when you think you’re settling into the story…
Just when you think Channy and X can start, rebuilding their lives. Someone from their past tries to blackmail Channy. Tries to break her, but joke was on them. Channy refuses to run. She refuses to be silent. She decides she’s not going out without a fight.
And that fight? Baaaaby, they were fighting like both had something to prove.
What unfolds is raw, chaotic, and heartbreaking as Channy comes face-to-face with Natalie—the very woman who shattered her and Xavier the first time around. Old wounds rip open as fists fly and truths spill.
In the middle of the struggle, Natalie drops a bomb that leaves you STUNNED:
💣 Channy’s ex-husband never loved her. 💣 He was using her the entire time. 💣 And to make it worse? He’s Natalie’s cousin.
💥 THAT CLIFFHANGER.
Jaw on the floor. Mouth stuck open. Spirit disturbed.
The kind of ending that has you staring at the wall, whispering, “Nah… she didn’t just do that.”
The kind that has you staring at the page whispering, “WAIT… WHAT???” “ Nah… she didn’t just do that.”
L.B. Gaines closes this book with a move so bold, so reckless, and so intentional that it should honestly be illegal. Stakes are raised, the playfield is no longer leveled and Consequences looming.
Final Thoughts: 🔥 Love that never died 🔥 A cliffhanger that will haunt you
This isn’t just a second-chance romance. It’s a reminder that love can be bulletproof—but the past? The past always aims to kill.
📚 Read it. Brace yourself. And clear your schedule—because you’re going to need the sequel immediately.
Picture it: You’re graduating from high school, and your life already feels planned out: college, career, success. No distractions. No detours.
Then your sister comes home from college, and the two of you step out to what’s supposed to be just another party. Music playing. Warm air. A night like any other. Until you see him and what starts as a simple introduction turns into late-night conversations and a connection that feels too real to ignore. The kind of love that catches you off guard. The kind that feels like it was meant to happen.
But life rarely goes according to plan. Unforeseen circumstances and the weight of other people’s opinions tear you apart, leaving you no choice but to move on. You accomplish everything you set out to achieve: the degree, the career, the success, yet something is still missing.
Years later, you decide it’s time to return home and start fresh. And just when you least expect it, your first love walks back into your life. Now everything rushes in at once. You’re older. Wiser. More guarded. But the question remains: can love that once slipped away find its way back?
This is the story of Chanel “Channy” Davis and Xavier, a journey filled with passion, obstacles, betrayal, and the noise of everyone else’s opinions. But isn’t that what makes life and love worth fighting for?
Prepare for an emotional ride that will leave you craving redemption, healing, and second chances.
Xavier and Chanel were an opposites attract, he was the bad boy and she was the good girl going off to college to make something of herself, but when they crossed paths at a party, Xavier knew that she was it for him. Chanel wanted to hang with him and have some fun before college so they agreed they would spend the summer together before she left. After a situation occurred, their time together was short lived when he had to spend 20 years in prison and when he got out we got to see if their love was as bulletproof as they said it was.
I liked the way in which the book was written with the buildup of their love connection because it starts in the past when they were school age, then it goes through Xavier's time in lockup in little mini time jumps where you get to see how he is trying to change and do something positive while he is in there and how he never forgot about Chanel and how he tried to stay connected to her. Then you see him in the present day once he is released and him trying to get acclimated to how things are compared to how they were before he got locked up.
I appreciated that once they did reunite after he was released, it wasn't like he was trying to step on any toes but he ultimately just wanted to make sure she was good and cared for and we get to see them navigate life after. I was lowkey mad ad his brother and her sister for what they did when he got locked up even though they thought it was best for Chanel and I was happy it didn't have a major effect on what their reunion.
There was some drama thrown into the mix when the book ended and I cannot wait.to see how that unfolds in the next book.
Bulletproof Love by @lbgaines out this FRIDAY 2/13 This book was captivating from the very first chapter. Channy and X cross paths at a party, and although Channy knows that pursuing anything with him could derail her carefully laid plans, she gives him 69 days for a whirlwind romance. She never intended to fall in love. Then, in one night—a haze of bullets—everything ends it.
Gaines takes readers on a wild emotional ride. The story is drama-filled and fast-paced, yet it beautifully portrays a love that is soft, tender, and pure. The characters are layered and multifaceted, with clear growth and development throughout the novel. Still, it feels like they can never quite get it right.
She carefully drops breadcrumbs, masterfully setting the stage for the rest of the series—so be prepared to crash out just a little bit. This story explores love, grief, redemption, and even revenge, all wrapped in a compelling and well-crafted plot. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am so grateful for the opportunity to read it as an ARC.
Chanel did everything her parents asked of her, good grades, honor roll, but don't fall in love with the bad boy. She is the golden child who was going to make something of herself. Here parents already had a son in prison and they necessarily care about Yaya because she was going to do what she wanted to do anyway, they still love her though. Xavier was a boy from the wrong side of town, when they saw him they thought criminal, drug dealer and murderer. He is different with Channy. She made him feel like he was better than what they made him out to be. Xavier went to prison for protecting her. He learned a lot about himself, but it sad that he had to go to prison to find out. They should have been mad at Zay and Yaya from keeping them apart, but I get that they wanted the best for their siblings. Charles is dangerous and he doesn’t care about their daughter he only cares about hurting Chanel. He just woke up the breast in the King brothers. Now that’s bulletproof
Big shout out to LB Gaines for doing her thing yet again! Her writing style is a whole mood—it keeps me completely locked in and entertained from the first page to the last and honestly, I love that for me. 💅🏾🔥
In Bulletproof Love, we meet Xavier and Chanel. Watching these two come together from completely different worlds was a journey. This story is a reminder that sometimes, the best chemistry happens when you mix the hard with the soft. 🧱☁️ It’s that perfect balance of grit and vulnerability that makes you cheer for them to win love.
What Stood Out 📝📼 and What I Loved 😍
The early 2000s vibes were on point! It felt like a trip down memory lane that added so much flavor to the setting. 💿🎧
I absolutely loved the diary-like entries. It made the storytelling feel intimate and realistic, like I was getting a look into their deepest thoughts. 📓🖋️
Where do I start with this book! Ok! For one! I love the way she showed Xavier and Chanel’s live story when they were younger. How the good girl falls for the bad boys but yet don’t know what to do when shit hit the fans in the streets! The. i like how she took us through the journey of Xavier in Prison from 2006-2024. I so wished she gave us some insight on Chanel in more detail during that time. But baby, their connection was never disconnected and that showed from the first time they saw each other for the first time in years! But shit hits the fan when Natalie ass continue to be a hater because her family got murked by the Kings Brother! But just like her ass, they asked for it! My girl Chanel was not having it! But now the baby daddy and ex husband, Charles is part of the BS and others are coming after them! And now they kidnapped Ya Ya!! Oh Zay is homing for their heads!!!! I need book 2 now!!!!!!!😩😩😩😩😩

Man this was so cute at the beginning, then it got lost, then it find itself back again and then poof, we got ourselves a cliffhanger without notion of when the next book is coming. From Charles, Cameron, Natalie, these were so sudden, like a cold windstorm, but then you have the Yaya and Zayden who could put a fire on it(because they were so wrong), and finally you have the Channy who doesn’t deserve anything yet my man X, phew 😮💨 “now that’s the song: what a man, what a man, what a mighty good man… yes he is”. This really for me would have Ben a 1 star or no review type because again these cliffhanger with no warning, but X saved the day. I do not know if I will be able to read the second book, when and if it’s coming (soon). This is probably my biggest pet peeve is the cliffhangers with no warning ‼️
Five stars… EASY! LB Gaines knows how to pen a good story, and her first full-length urban romance proves just how well she understands every assignment.
Chanel is preparing to leave Crestwood to pursue her dreams of becoming a lawyer, while Xavier is already deep in the streets, trying to balance loyalty, ambition, and the pull he feels toward her. What begins as young love full of promise and chemistry is tested when real life intervenes and choices demand payment.
What I enjoyed most was the emotional depth, especially Xavier’s chapters behind bars. LB (yeah I gave you a nickname lol) gave his POV a raw tenderness that made it impossible not to root for his redemption. His daily letters to “Channy” were especially beautiful and vulnerable. Chanel’s journey hit just as hard as she wrestles with losing the man she loves deeply, honoring her dreams, and standing firm against family expectations.
Add in secrets, twists, and a finale that keeps the tension high, and this story delivers on every level.
Bulletproof Love is the definition of ride-or-die romance, and that cliffhanger had me staring at the last page like… now why would you do that? Book two, please.....immediately!
L. B. Gaines, if you don't put pen to paper...I know something. Listen, this book is so damn good. I mean I should be sleeping because I have to work in the morning. But nooooo! I'm up reading.
At one point I was crying, the next I was saying "what the hell", whew Chile this book is good. X is a changed man, a published Author. Chanel is a prosecutor extraordinare, and Zay and YaYa are married with twins. Also Crown Logistics is booming. Then here comes a hating ass Natalie with her foolishness. A woman scorned.
Yes L.B. , I need the next installment quick, fast, and in a hurry. This book deserves 10 stars... it's that good!
Omgggggg! L.B. Gainessssss! Listen! This book had me locked in from the start. The storyline was definitely different. It was not how I expected it which brought such DELIGHT to my SOUL!!! L.B. drew us in from the start with Channy and Xavier. Two opposites from different worlds that were willing to give each other a chance. Sometimes it takes that one person to change your life and that is what happened here.
But L.B. I was not ready for the ending! I love how she was able to get to the point without dragging it out! Zay and Yaya are definitely ride or dies, even though they pissed me off at one point. But they redeemed themselves. This was definitely worth the read and I AM looking forward to the next book in this series.
This is a note to me author, and I can’t see my girl definitely got me wanting to check out the rest of her catalog.
I’m glad that she started from the beginning of their story versus doing flashbacks. It really helped understanding their relationships/love
Kenya and Zay were a hypocrite from the beginning. Like it’s okay for her and Zay have a relationship when he did the same thing as Xavier but when it came to their siblings, they pretty much manipulated the situation. And I think Chanel knew that that’s why she ended up cutting her off for so long. Mad they didn’t cuss them out like they deserved.
Now Chanel and Xavier I really liked them. and can’t wait to see more of them with Genesis
A second chance romance that will put you through every emotion. It’s a story where opposites attract and two people from different worlds fall in love. This book is not just a feel good one but gives you raw emotions and dives into real life topics. I can’t wait for everyone to read this book and fall in love with X and Chanel like I did. This is the first book of the series and I’m anxiously waiting for an update with the second book. Bulletproof love will be releasing soon ✨ Get your kindles ready for a book that is so worth the wait. 💚💚💚💫
Channy and Xavier get all the stars. Yes, be prepared for a cliffhanger, but I know waiting on book two is going to be so worth it, and the action is going to be hitting. Gaines doesn’t let the sweet love linger to long because we have to remember just who tf X. King really is. What I didn't expect is the snaking and the setups. The King Brothers are finally in a place where things are great, and the past comes in with the smoke and anybody can get it. This next book is going to be hell. I feel it in my bones and I'm ready. Y'all, Xavier - that's one poetic, patient, smart man. Happy Reading Y'all!💋
If you love emotional, second chance romance, Bulletproof Love by L.B. Gaines is a must read.
Channy and Xavier’s story is raw, intense, and unforgettable. Torn apart by violence and reunited twenty years later, their chemistry is still undeniable—but so is the pain. Every page pulls you deeper into their past, their heartbreak, and their fight to see if love can truly survive it all.
This isn’t just a love story. It’s about loss, redemption, and a love that refuses to die.
Oh wow 🤩, “Bulletproof Love (Crestwood Chronicles) - Book 1 was an excellent read🔥🔥🔥an urban saga: romance, betrayal, revenge, criminal activity, adventure etc 😮💨. And the Crestwood urban fun has only just begun 🫣😬👀‼️Because, some wear vengeance as a badge of honor & entitlement rather than accept defeat. Unfortunately, for few (like NV & C note), the beasts of the jungle have resurfaced to rescue, restore & fortify their Kingdom. …and the ominous hunted hunger games commence🤦🏾♀️🥴‼️
L.B Gains was a new to me author and babbyyyy when I tell you she killed this read, I mean it, wholeheartedly! What an incredible read! Left me stunned..ready for more..on edge..excited! I mean up till 4 am reading and I had to be up for work by 6:30! If I could’ve given this a million stars, I would’ve! Hands down the best book I’ve read all year! Impeccably written! L.B you got a new fan! It’s me. I’m her! Very very well written! Ok, I’m done..for now. Ya’ll go read it now but brace yourself cause it’s a page turner! Enjoy, cause I sure did!
Bulletproof Love was everything I wanted and more. A classic opposites-attract story — the girl from the right side of the tracks falling for the guy from the hood — but what made this one hit deeper was the second chance. The kind of love that never really lets go… the kind worth fighting for, worth breaking for, worth risking everything for. Their journey back to each other? Emotional, messy, and completely consuming in the best way. And THAT ending… I’m not okay 😩 Left hanging and already desperate for the next book. I need it immediately.
Sigh. Loved the cover. Beautiful. I love second-chance romances, but y’all gotta chill on AI.
The book wasn’t even flowing right. AI writing is horrible. Maybe some people can look past it and focus on the plot, but I couldn’t even get into it.
The one-liners, the choppiness, the short weird questions followed by answers… it just destroyed the book for me.
I feel like AI is going to ruin reading for me. It’s crazy because these are the same authors who wrote just fine before, and now you can clearly tell the difference. It’s lazy.
