The year is 2040, and the United States has been ravaged by a pandemic referred to as the Second Wave. Convicted of vehicular manslaughter, the unassuming Milo Greene is serving his life sentence as a prisoner in his own home. A few months into his sentence, Milo is given the opportunity to work as an Alter, an assistant to the rich and famous. Using augmented reality, Milo attends meetings, answers texts, writes emails--anything his Principal asks of him. He is her second, til death do us part.
As the story unfolds, Milo realizes that he and his Principal have much more in common than he'd originally thought.
@lter$ is a thought-provoking dystopian crime novel with a romantic subplot that is sure to keep you up at night.
Thanks so much to @alexandra_bos for the gifted copy of the book!
In 2040, Milo Greene is incarcerated in his own home for vehicular homicide. Sentenced to life, he has the opportunity to work as an “alter” for a wealthy individual - a personal assistant that takes on their responsibilities. When Milo is finally matches with his Principle - he realizes they have more similarities than he could imagine.
I was impressed with the imagination of life in 2040. Years after COVID, another pandemic has rocked the world. AI has become more prominent and even lawyer’s are being replaced with robots. Farming and gardening are luxuries. A typical meal comes prepackaged and is, as Milo would describe, “plastic”. Don’t even get me started on how you can serve life in prison in your own home (if you’re lucky enough to own one). I don’t typically pick up a dystopian story, but I really found this easy to read and enjoyed Bos’ interpretation of the future.
@lter$ has a lot of dystopian fantasy, some romance, and a crime to solve all in one thought provoking story. Overall, I loved Milo’s character - just trying to survive an unexpected circumstance the world threw at him. Joey gave him life and something to keep him going while he was down on his luck. And Roe - a glimmer of light in the darkness for someone that really hadn’t experienced love.
I did wish the epilogue gave a little more insight on what happened next. I still wondered about the specifics of Roe’s incarceration and how they were able to meet back up. I also wondered how Elite Alters and Irene were affected in the aftermath of how everything unfolded. And I need to know what happens with Angie!
Convicted for a murder he doesn’t remember committing, Milo finds himself imprisoned for the rest of his life within the walls of his own home. His dog taken, his possessions sold off and his home rigged with cameras, Milo is desperate for more than cycling on his state-issued exercise bike and chowing down on his plastic food. After 90 days of monotony, Milo is given the opportunity to train as an ‘Alter,’ a digital double of a wealthy yet busy individual (aka, ‘Principal.’) Alters follows Milo’s bleak journey through his training and role as an Alter and his persistence of innocence.
This was a fantastic little read. Alters came up as recommended on KU and I was intrigued by both the title and the cover. It’s been on my TBR for a while but this week I finally got stuck in.
Alters reminds me of 1984 in all the best ways. The surveillance, the forbidden relationships and the ‘justice’ system just feel Orwellian. The premise itself is unique and, with the way AI is developing, is something you could envision happening.
The romance aspect isn’t a huge part of the plot, so if that’s something you’re into you may be disappointed. However, for me, this didn’t matter too much.
Alters is a real hidden gem. It’s a book I could see being turned into a film or series one day. I highly recommend this book to fans of Orwell and the dystopian genre.
(ARC REVIEW) I devoured this book in less than 24 hours and I wish I had more of it to read! A deviation from my usual mafia romance books, this was incredibly creative and well put together. I had backroom vibes for most of it but Act 3 was insane. I highly recommend this read for someone who needs something a little different, and JUSTICE FOR ANGIE.
